MUSEUM NEWS

A grant from Bank of America’s global 2015 Art Conservation Project allowed the Heard Museum to add eight iconic sculptures to its list of conservation projects this past winter.

“Our Art Conservation Project is designed not only to conserve artworks and shine a light on the need for the preservation of artistic and historic treasures, but also to educate communities and convey respect for the varied cultures and traditions throughout the world,” said Bank of America Arizona Market President Benito Almanza.

Since the inception of BA’s conservation project in 2010, the bank has provided grants to museums in 28 countries supporting 85 conservation projects. This year, the Heard was in stellar company, as BA supported artwork restoration at the famed British and Guggenheim museums, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Connecticut, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar. In all, eight museums received grants in 2015.

“The eight sculptures being restored through this remarkable conservation project are iconic, reflecting important cultural traditions,” said John R. Bulla, Heard Museum chief operating officer.

“We are deeply grateful to Bank of America for ensuring that generations of families

both in and outside Arizona will be able to appreciate the historic, cultural and educational significance of these pieces.”

These eight sculptures at the Heard were restored with support from Bank of America 2015 Art Conservation Project:

• Two by Chiricahua Apache artist Allan Houser (1914-1994): “Earth Song,” composed of Alabama marble, and the bronze “Seeking Harmony.”

• Three bronze pieces by Aleut artist John Hoover (1919-2011): “Crane Woman,"

"Heron and Turtle” and “Aleut Dance Staff.”

• Two by Houser’s son, Chiricahua Apache artist Bob Haozous (b. 1943): the oxidized-steel “Zen Bear” and “White Steele," created from carved marble.

• One by Doug Hyde (Nez Perce/Assiniboine/Chippewa, b. 1946), who studied with Houser: “Navajo Water Girl,” whose natural limestone patina was restored.

CURRENT EXHIBITSPERSONAL JOURNEYS: AMERICAN INDIAN LANDSCAPES

ON DISPLAY THROUGH SEPT. 28

This exhibit explores the unique relationship American Indians have with land and how that has been expressed in art. Native artists use a variety of media and processes to express their stories, individual creations built on layers of cultural teachings, historical events, personal experiences and spiritual insights. Land as a subject matter for Native artists is a personal journey in history, culture and identity. Native landscapes in the visual arts are a convergence of physical place, process and cultural meaning.

Sponsored by Dino and Elizabeth Murfee DeConcini

OVER THE EDGE: FRED HARVEY AT THE GRAND CANYON AND IN THE GREAT SOUTHWEST

ON DISPLAY THROUGH 2017

The Santa Fe Railway and its concessionaire, the Fred Harvey Company, were masters at creating a vision of the Southwest. Jointly, their ephemeral publications promoting the merits of the “Indian Southwest” number in the tens of thousands. Their illustrated books, pamphlets, folios, menus, postcards, playing cards, timetables, calendars and even matchbook covers evoke vivid images of an adventurous journey through a previously remote world.

THE THIRD DIMENSION: SCULPTURAL STORIES IN STONE AND BRONZE

ONGOING

Some of the most exciting and moving American Indian fine art of the 20th and 21st centuries has been created by sculptors. The Heard Museum is fortunate recently to have been given works by leading American Indian sculptors such as Allan Houser and John Hoover. Gifts also include sculpture by the next generation of accomplished sculptors inspired by these pioneers, such as Doug Hyde and Bob Haozous, Houser’s son. Some of these sculptures were recently conserved thanks to a grant from the 2015 BA Art Conservation Project.

HOME: NATIVE PEOPLE IN THE SOUTHWEST

ONGOING

Learn about the Native peoples of the Southwest and hear them tell their stories in their own words in the Heard Museum’s signature exhibit. In addition to cultural objects, the exhibit showcases the traditions of Native peoples of the past and present and examines their definition of home. Don’t miss the Navajo Hogan, the Pueblo house or the 400 katsina dolls on display!

REMEMBERING OUR INDIAN SCHOOL DAYS: THE BOARDING SCHOOL EXPERIENCE

ONGOING

This powerful exhibit immerses visitors into the story of American Indian children who were forced by the federal government to attend residential boarding schools hundreds of miles away from home. This exhibit examines the system of off-reservation Indian boarding schools, which separated children from their families and stripped them of their cultural identity and language.

Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, with additional support from The Rockefeller Foundation, The Arizona Republic, Bank of America, Intel Corporation, Mr. & Mrs. William Freeman, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Lynn and the Roger S. Firestone Foundation.

AROUND THE WORLD: THE HEARD MUSEUM COLLECTION

ONGOING

Explore the cultural traditions of Native peoples from around the world in this exhibit of artwork from North and South America, Africa and Oceania. Much of the work on display is from the original collection of Dwight and Maie Heard.

AMERICAN INDIAN VETERANS NATIONAL MEMORIAL

ONGOING

Service and sacrifice spanning more than three centuries is honored in the first and only known national memorial to American Indian veterans of many conflicts. The memorial, located outside the Berlin Gallery, contains panels describing the devotion of American Indian soldiers to their country, and includes several heroic sculptures.
