Coonawarra … a small strip of land in the cool south east corner of South Australia, this remote and ancient landscape produces wines that unmistakably speak of their place
and reflect the character of their makers.
It’s a place that gets under your skin, leaving an indelible mark, for those who choose it as home and for those that keep coming back.
Discover the Coonawarra effect.
1
Our Heritage and CommunityOur community is as rich and varied as the stunning wines we produce.
Coonawarra grew out of human spirit and ingenuity, and like all appellations, the wines of Coonawarra speak not just of the famous terroir, but also of the local community and people who give character to those wines.
It began with the vision of Scottish immigrant John Riddoch, who travelled to Australia; lured by the gold rush in 1852. Eventually, his wealth grew exponentially, and he became a pastoralist, with a large landholding that embraced Yallum (now Yallum Park) near Penola. Legend has it that he so admired the garden and orchard of a local identity that he conceived of the idea of The Coonawarra Fruit Colony, that would later become Coonawarra. Eventually, settler families were attracted to the region to try their hand at growing vines and orchard fruits in the early 1890 period.
The first vintage was produced in 1895, and the second in what is now the Katnook woolshed. Riddoch commissioned a large tri-gabled winery and cellar to be built of local stone and ready for the third vintage in 1897.
Riddoch died in 1901, but the tradition for fine reds was soon championed by the Redman family who planted new vineyards, and pioneered the production of table wines, in contrast to everyone else distilling fruit for brandy.
Coonawarra’s renaissance began in 1951 when Riddoch’s original winery was purchased and renamed Wynns Coonawarra Estate. The new owners sought to position their wines for a premium market and, in the process, make Coonawarra famous.
There are now many world-class wineries and vineyards who call Coonawarra home. Today, new generations of winemaking families toil alongside an influx of fresh new talent to ensure the spirit of the Coonawarra wine region continues to thrive. It is a community that’s vibrant, passionate, sophisticated and unique – one that salutes and values tradition while embracing innovation.

Our Landscape and TerroirCoonawarra is blessed with several gifts of nature that are impossible to engineer. The combination of a unique terra rossa soil, with a long cool ripening season, and a permanent supply of pure underground water from the limestone aquifers, makes Coonawarra eminently suitable to growing the perfect expression of “the king of grapes” – Cabernet Sauvignon.
Our distinctive terroir produces wines of great distinction – regardless of whether they are red, white or sparkling. Having said that, Coonawarra is renowned for producing beautiful and elegant red wines, that not only taste superb but also age exquisitely.
As a recognised cool climate wine region, Coonawarra is one of the coldest Australian places to ripen grape berries, and as a result of the longer ripening season, our wines develop more complex and refined flavours.
Our landscape reflects the evolutionary forces of nature over the last million years, when the land was brimming with sea life at the base of the Kanawinka Escarpment. Then came an ice-age, freezing the ocean waters into polar ice-caps, and causing the shoreline to recede. As the land rose above sea level, the white limestone layer became exposed to the elements. The prevailing maritime winds blew silt from the plains creating the light clay rich in iron, silica and other nutrients. This oxidised into the famous rust-coloured terra rossa soil that is Coonawarra today.
Our celebrated ridge of terra rossa is just 27 kilometres long and less than two kilometres wide. Terra rossa soil is extraordinary and extremely valuable; a permeable light clay over a limestone base, that allows water to drain freely, providing ample air, and the opportunity for vine roots to explore and thrive.
With such gifts of nature, our commitment in Coonawarra is to make beautiful wines that are a pure expression of our natural environment; and to continue to be progressive and innovative in nurturing sustainable viticulture for the future.

Comments: Bundalong has been in the Porter family for over 65 years. An old shallow quarry with exposed red topsoil suggested the presence of Coonawarra’s world renowned terra rossa soil and led us to plant vines. The first Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in 1989 followed by Shiraz.
Originally all grapes were sold to the largest buyer in Coonawarra, with some blocks being graded in the top 5%.
The objective has always been quality rather than quantity. In 2008 we produced our first premium wines which scored a 5 star ranking by Halliday. We restrict our vintages to our very good years and our next vintage, 2012 received 95 points from Halliday.
Our intimate knowledge of the vineyard enables us to manage the soil and microclimate to carefully balance the canopy and crop to produce a layering of flavours.
Our current vintage is our 2014 limited release single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. We use specially selected parcels of fruit matured in French oak.

Comments: The DiGiorgio family had a vision to produce the highest quality wines from their estate grown fruit and in March 2002, acquired the second oldest winery in the heart of Coonawarra, previously known as Rouge Homme. This has provided the family with a wonderful production facility and a centrally located cellar door. It has a blend of new and old technology allowing the family to produce premium hand crafted wines. This commitment has been rewarded by winning numerous awards and a 5 Star Winery Rating.
In addition to producing premium wines from Coonawarra and Lucindale, the DiGiorgio family sources specific varietal fruit from different areas of the Limestone Coast where they believe the terroir is best suited to the variety. These wines make up the Renaissance Range and are a selection of varieties specially chosen to demonstrate the versatility of the region and the passion and ambition of our winemakers.
When visiting the cellar door you will have the opportunity to taste premium wines from our extensive portfolio, olive oil and local cheese. The outdoor seating area is the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine with a “Pick Your Own Produce” platter with family and friends.

Comments: Our philosophy is summed up by Gavin (Hoggie) … “the hallmarks for a successful wine brand are consistency, approachability, drinkability and great value for money.”
In his quest to pursue these attributes, the Hoggies label was born.
Clearly the key individual in the team is Gavin as Chief Winemaker and whose oversight in viticulture and final blends is critical.
He has phenomenal support from his wife Julie who keeps a keen eye on the Coonawarra vineyard, and his brother Barry who oversees the company’s vineyard interests in Mildura, and Victoria. Children Alana (Gardini), Christopher and Stephanie all chip in when required.
Russell Badham is responsible for Export Marketing and Sales whilst Adam Gardini is the driving force behind the establishment and maintenance of our website and digital media.

Comments: It was only ever supposed to be temporary. John and Melissa Innes moved to the iconic Coonawarra region twenty-nine years ago intending to, in John’s words, “stay a little while”.
They bought a parcel of land ringed by tall Red Gum Eucalypts, and with natural wetlands dotted with Ottelia Ovalifolia, a native water lily. In 1993 they planted 2 Ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and over the next 3 years expanded the vineyard to 9 Ha. All these years later John and Melissa are still there.
John spent more than twenty years working within the Coonawarra region as a winemaker. He and Melissa then turned their energy towards their own projects; the restaurant Fodder and the wine label Ottelia.

Comments: Parker Coonawarra Estate was established in 1985 by John and Faye Parker after a career long interest in the region. Their vision was to create the most faithful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from the celebrated terra rossa over limestone soils of Coonawarra. Parker Estate remains committed to building on this original ethos, to combine the best vines, with the best soil, from the best growing region, without compromise.
Our 20Ha estate ‘Abbey’ vineyard is located upon the famed ‘cigar strip’ of terra rossa soil in southern Coonawarra; where Cabernet Sauvignon is predominant. There are also small pockets of Merlot and Petit Verdot which are often included in the final blend of our premium First Growth. The Cabernet Sauvignon is planted to Reynella vine selection; original cuttings from Bordeaux, sourced before Phylloxera decimated the vineyards throughout France in the late 1800’s.
Parker Coonawarra Estate maintains a five star Halliday rating, whilst also receiving Langton’s Classification V for Excellence – one of only 123 Australian wineries to be awarded such.

Comments: We’ve taken the old Roller and painted it red. To make it go faster, to be fun and breezy. So that everyone can enjoy the ride. And appreciate the timelessness of a new beginning.
We are the pedigree that’s been let off the leash. To run, discover and play. To be brought to life. We are the wines with carefree souls; the wines for now and the wines for later. We are the vibrancy of the terra rossa, celebrating the fruit and honouring the vine.
Our wine maker Kate Goodman is regarded as one of Australia’s best contemporary winemakers.
Kate is creating wines with freshness and vibrancy – seeking structure and expression of fruit – while still retaining varietal integrity.
All of our wines are truly estate grown and our vineyards are the pride of everything we do.
We seek balance and take a very holistic approach to our viticultural practices.
Seeking to create a balance between the soil and the vine.
We are contemporary Coonawarra.

Comments: Petaluma was founded in 1976 with the focused objective to produce ultra-premium wines by carefully selecting the best sites within a particular Australian region suited to a chosen variety.
Petaluma set its sights on Coonawarra for the specific purpose of growing world class, elegant and long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Situated at the heart of Coonawarra’s highly prized strip of warm, friable red clay (Terra Rossa), the Evans Vineyard was purchased in 1978 from the late Australian wine legend, Len Evans.
1983 saw Petaluma additionally establish the Sharefarmers Vineyard and both are hand pruned, with vertical trellising used in closely spaced rows.
Over almost four decades, the hallmark yellow label has come to represent Australian wine of refined elegance.
Under the direction of veteran Petaluma winemaker Andrew Hardy, Petaluma Coonawarra is well established as a New World classic and acclaimed by collectors, with a long term rating of Excellent in the Langton’s Classification of Australian wine.

Comments: We reckon most things in life are better when they’re shared.
At our place, that’s done over the table - loaded with backyard produce, a bottle or two of good wine and surrounded by family and friends.
Our two sites feature both the young and the old; regional classics Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot along with Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
Through the winter months, the vines share our land with a small trip of goats who maintain the rows, doing their bit to contribute to our micro-climate.
Two lemon trees, 20 apple trees, 300 strawberry plants, 200 bushes of oregano and whatever else Chris has decided to grow on any given day, share the space with our cellar door.
Come visit us and you might chance upon Chris offering up the backyard’s latest bounty or you’ll find Steven and Emma Raidis at the table, glass in hand, ready to share a story or two.

Comments: Coonawarra’s oldest winemaking family have now been producing premium red wines for over 100 years.
Bill Redman arrived in 1901 to learn the art and skill of making red wines. 1908 saw him purchase 40 acres of vineyard and make his first wines.
This property became the basis of the Redman family holdings for the next 58 years. In 1937 Owen Redman joined his father, and through many trials and tribulations, they established Coonawarra as the leading red wine producing area of Australia.
In 1965, the original family holdings were sold. Owen Redman immediately bought a small vineyard and the first wines under his new ‘REDMAN’ label were made in 1966, with the current winery being built for the 1969 vintage.
Many changes have occurred in the vineyards and winery, but the Redman winemaking traditions can still be traced back to lessons learnt by Bill Redman.
Following in this family tradition, third and fourth generation winemakers, Bruce, Malcolm and Daniel continue to make the elegant high quality red wines for which the Redman name has become renowned.

Comments: The Rymill family has a rich history in Coonawarra, dating to Scottish-born John Riddoch who braved the harsh climate and trekked hundreds of kilometres, subsequently founding Coonawarra in 1890.
The sense of adventure which drove the family to develop Coonawarra and explore the globe’s polar regions shapes the character of Rymill Coonawarra.
The wines are a true reflection of this sense of adventure. The winemakers are compelled to adapt to the climate and the remoteness, and craft wines with extraordinary personality and purpose. Wines which are uniquely Coonawarra.

Comments: St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s favourite premium Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
The name honours Hugo Gramp who became Managing Director of G.Gramp & Sons winery in 1920 at just 25 years of age.
Hugo was an inspirational leader whose vision led the winery to become a pillar of the Australian wine industry. His deep passion for wine represents a legacy that began with his grandfather Johann Gramp who planted his first vineyard on the banks of Jacob’s Creek in 1847.
Although St Hugo does not have a cellar door in Coonawarra, visitors can see two of our St Hugo vineyards along Riddoch Highway. The Coonawarra region is the perfect source of fruit for St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon as its unique climate and soil produce concentrated and luscious Cabernet Sauvignon wines with pristine fruit flavours, refined tannins and outstanding longevity.
Crafted from the highest quality fruit each vintage, St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is a sought after wine at auction and is classified “Excellent” in Langton’s Classification VI.

Comments: Wynns Coonawarra Estate was founded by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch, who planted vineyards in 1891 recognising the potential of the rich, red Terra Rossa top soil and the long ripening season of Coonawarra’s cool southerly climate.
He completed the Estate’s three-gabled winery in 1896.
Coonawarra’s revival began in 1951 when Melbourne wine merchants Samuel and David Wynn purchased Riddoch’s original vineyards and winery. The Wynns recognised the intrinsic qualities of Coonawarra wines – their richness and intensity of fruit character – and set out to build an independent identity for the region.
They created the famous label that has made John Riddoch’s winery one of Australia’s best known buildings.
Today, Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the region’s largest single vineyard holder on Terra Rossa soil and Coonawarra’s pre-eminent wine maker.
With the most premium and longest established vineyards in Coonawarra, Wynns Coonawarra Estate wines are regarded as benchmarks for the district, lauded for their sheer depth and concentration of flavour.
Now in the Gables building, Wynns offers a dedicated conference room for hire with state of the art technology and facilities.

Comments: Established over 166 years ago and now led by fifth-generation Chairman Robert Hill-Smith, Yalumba stands proud. It is dedicated to remaining under family ownership for the sixth generation to nurture; committed to crafting wines of conviction, quality and provenance.
To own a vineyard upon the famous ‘terra rossa’ soil over limestone is the holy grail of all Cabernet Sauvignon purists. Since 1987, the Hill-Smith family has counted themselves among those fortunate enough to make an estate grown Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, naming it after red wine enthusiast and former Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies, who so generously praised Yalumba’s Special Vintage Galway Claret 1961 at an influential gathering in Adelaide in 1966.
The Menzies Vineyard is Yalumba’s distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon estate, crafting two exceptional single-site Cabernet Sauvignons in ‘The Menzies’ and ‘The Cigar.’
Experimentation, innovation, minimal intervention and small batch winemaking has resulted in Yalumba’s Coonawarra estate wines having an enviable reputation; being wines of longevity, elegance and structure.

Comments: The Zema family is well known for producing great red wines but it is also their warm welcome, colourful characters and unforgettable experiences that set them apart.
Grape growing and winemaking has been a large part of the Zema family’s history since the early 1800’s and it is this passion for wine that has been passed down from generation to generation.
The Zema family is proudly traditional in the ‘vine to wine’ process, using only 100% Coonawarra ‘estate grown’ fruit, remaining committed to hand pruning and using minimal irrigation to maximize vine health and fruit quality.
These practices are further enhanced by the strategic location of their three Coonawarra vineyard sites which capitalizes on the regions subtle climatic variations.
The Zema family along with winemaker Greg Clayfield are producing a range of hand crafted wines for your enjoyment that are renowned for their consistency, intense rich fruit with excellent regional and varietal definition.
