TRUST THE BASICS THIS AUTUMN

Black turtle-neck topNoa Noa, Osterbrogade 82, Cph Ø; open Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat 10:00-16:00; noanoa.com

You can never go wrong with a black turtle-neck top. After all, it is already a highly sophisticated piece on its own. During autumn, when it gets a little chilly, layering lighter items is definitely a go. Splurging a little on cashmere won’t hurt as much as it gives you warmth and cosiness. You can wear this with skinny jeans, leather skirts, basically anything you can think of. It gives that classy yet edgy look when styled perfectly.

Trawling the streets of the Danish capital, the Visit Post has identified eight essentials no self-respecting fashionista should be without. By Lycelle Aure Bajar

It’s every girl’s dream to have a wardrobe full of clothes, accessories and shoes – but sometimes the best way to go is to rely on the essentials.

Just look at the locals! The Danes have such great taste in fashion, and they make it seem so effortless. It really is astounding to see how chic the ladies look when they’re walking around the city. Danish women are clearly some of the best dressed people on the planet.

It’s interesting to learn the new trends by observing how they dress themselves. Danish women have such simple yet elegant style. They like to incorporate basic fashion essen-tials in their outfits and it works marvellously.

As long as you have these eight basic items in your wardrobe – you will never worry again about what to wear.

PRICE: 599kr

Long-sleeve dressBy Malene Birger, Antonigade 10, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00; bymalenebirger.com

The long-sleeve dress is a staple in achieving an elegant outfit. It gives you enough coverage for warmth, but also sassiness by still showing some skin. It is easily dressed down or up. If you are only running errands, you can wear a big sweater over it and wear your favourite sneakers. If you’re on a night out, then you can pair it some black booties and a leather jacket. Spice it up a little bit more with a perfect chunky necklace.

During the more windy and brisk months of autumn, a thick knit is your best friend. It’s a defi-nite essential for the season. It is completely up to you if you’d prefer it fitted or baggy. But it’s recommended you get a larger size as it gives you more room for layering. Purchasing this in neutral colours gives you more choices to mix it up with different items. Layering it over a col-lared shirt and pairing it with skinny jeans could make a very trendy outfit.

PRICE: 590kr

Leather jacketGanni, Gammel Kongevej 82, Frederiksberg; open Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat 10:00-16:00; ganni.com

When it comes to leather jackets, don’t be afraid to splurge. It is a timeless item that you could wear almost throughout the year here in Copenhagen. Invest in the quality and the style as you can basically pair it with anything and you will automatically look dashing! It can be paired with a simple shirt and jeans, dresses, shorts and skirts, you name it – it always works! It is a must to always look for the proper fit and cut because not all jackets are made for you. But when you’ve found ‘the one’, expect it to be your partner for life – as leather jackets always get better with age.

Trendy ScarvesNaledi Copenhagen at Magasin, Kongens Nytorv, Cph K; open Mon-Sun 10:00-20:00; naledicopenhagen.com

The best accessory for autumn would be a trendy scarf. There’s huge scope when it comes to choosing a scarf – opt for the material, length and style that best suits you. As a known necessi-ty, I prefer my scarves to be trendy with a good mix of vibrant colours and patterns. Spicing up a simple outfit isn’t as hard as you think.

Black ankle-bootsDope, Frederiksberggade 5, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-17:00; dope.dk

When it comes to boots, there’s a variety of choices to choose from: from peep-toe boots to thigh-high boots. But in my opinion, ankle boots are must-haves. They are classics you could wear through different seasons. Looking for the perfect ankle boots is not at all hard as they come in various colours and designs. However, I would always recommend choosing a pair that are black or brown with a medium block heel, as they are more versatile for regular use. Great quality ankle boots will last forever, so don’t hesitate from splurging out on a pair.

Many women avoid statement necklaces because they seem a bit too heavy. However, when autumn falls, we tend to wear darker clothing that needs an injection of life. A fabulous state-ment necklace will always add that spark to whatever dull outfit we may have. It may be intim-idating to have a huge, chunky necklace around your neck, but there are always a lot to choose from. Pick out what works for you with just the right amount of bling.

The must-have item of the season are the cat-eye sunglasses. Shaped like you guessed it and popular in the ‘50s, they’re making a comeback to give you that vintage, fabulous look. With sunglasses, it’s important to know what pair works best for your face shape. As long as you’ve got that covered, they can truly accentuate your natural beauty and give you better looking eyebrows!

JOE MOREL

AS MUCH as I’d like to resist the pun, That Theatre Company’s Marathon is a play that’ll run and run.

A tragicomedy in one act, the audi-ence follows Edoardo Erba’s characters Mark and Steve as they train for the New York Marathon and begins to understand their perspective on life as the play explores memory, family, pain, love and the nature of men.

The two actors are some of the fastest-rising names in Danish theatre: Benjamin Stender is already a Reumert award winner and Rasmus Mortensen played Hamlet on tour with the British

Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Cast and crew describe rehearsals

as a “joy” and enriching their portrayal of “crude, stupid and obsessive” men chasing success and each other despite running being “painful, time-consuming and ultimately pointless”.

Director Ian Burns promises the audience will be “engrossed in the twists and turns of the language” and the constant running, which Mortensen finds liberating in allowing characters to “just be”.

Burns’ experiences as a cross-country runner certainly help convey rivalry – how much ‘a serious runner hates the sight of the neck in front of them, and how your closest friend is your pace-setter’.

Playing for a month in Krudttønden, this play promises to be extraordinary: on its Scandinavian premiere, we wish these courageous runners the best.

GIUSEPPE Verdi’s mid-life masterpiece La Traviata (aka ‘The Fallen Women’) is an opera classic beloved the world over.

Set in 18th century Paris, it follows the love affair of Violetta, a courtesan, and her admirer, the young and roman-

tic nobleman Alfredo. This story of high society and narrow

minds is taken on by members of the Royal Danish Theatre’s soloist ensem-ble, joined by Greek star baritone Dimitris Tiliakos as Alfredo’s domineer-ing father.

Guest director David Radok rejoins the theatre with his popular interpre-tation, ensuring La Traviata will not fall. (JM)

EVEN the biggest successes started small – and the Crazy Christmas Cabaret becoming a Copenhagen institution is definitely a success. Since starting in 1982 as “a tiny version of pantomime with four actors and a piano player”, Vivienne McKee’s Christmas favourite has brought expats and Danes together for over 30 years with clever jokes and festive silliness.

McKee is quick to point out that the cast return frequently and are as up for a laugh as the audiences. In fact, she confesses that the annually-returning

Dr Van Helsingør fra Elsinore was origi-nally meant to be a one-off. It was only by popular demand that his survival beyond 1986’s ‘Dracula’ cabaret came about. The good-natured mockery and topical jokes have always been part of the show – “People expect all the traditional elements.”

As the audiences grew and became more diverse, the level of participation increased: villains are now booed and hoorays welcome the heroes, dames parade about in ridiculous costume and the whole audience joins the singalongs – it’s like nothing else in Denmark.

If you’ve been before then you’re already sold, but don’t think you know what to expect. For anyone new to the Crazy Christmas Cabaret’s delights, expect the unexpected: sing shameless-ly, shout at the characters and join in with Denmark’s favourite cult comedy madhouse.

CONTEMPORARY dance meets wolfpack comedy in this revealing and passionate exploration of what it is to be male. Bosnian-born dancer, composer and choreographer Edhem Jesenkovic uses his intimate familiarity with rhythm and pace in his depiction

of ‘modern man’ as part of a four man ensemble.

Part fragile, part macho and part humourous, M.E.N digs deep into mas-culinity with an ironic, knowing touch – its power heightened by the conflicted and athletic performances.

GRADUATES Ongoing, ends Oct 31; Gallery Poulsen, Cph V; open Tue-Fri 12:00-17:30, Sat 11:00-15:00; free adm

LUISA KYCA

THE beautiful Poulsen gallery in the Meatpacking District is opening an exhibition aimed at art fanatics sick of pictures by artists they have already seen a thousand times.

Gallery Poulsen and The New York Academy of Art have created an exhibi-tion that gives the stage – or the walls – to three young talents who recently graduated from the academy and now have the opportunity to show their works in Copenhagen.

Abigail Schmidt, Shangkai Kevin Yu and Stephen Vollo from the US will turn your mind in another direction and expand your thoughts regarding contemporary art.

Schmidt offers a classical historic painting approach to pictures that always contain alluring twists like anti-heroic soldiers, and she indulges totally unconnected elements, which makes her work very innovative and interesting.

Yu, a very talented artist who mainly paints on cotton, creates perplexing vis-tas of chairs and body parts that draw us in to another universe.

With yet a different approach, Vollo represents all you expect from paintings. He shows new perspectives on everyday life. His specific style in-volves him using a lot of paint to create reliefs that are as beautiful as they are stunning.

The dean of the NYAA has been heav-ily involved in arranging the exhibition to make sure the best of the Big Apple’s young art scene is presented to Copen-hagen audiences. Entry is free, so why not come along and take a look at this new direction modern art is going in.

WORLD PRESS PHOTOS Oct 2-22; Politikens Hus, Vester Voldgade 33, Cph V; open Mon-Fri 13:00-18:00 (until 21:00 Wed-Thu), Sat-Sun 11:00-18:00; free adm

NO paintings, no fancy contemporary light installations – just reality. The ex-hibition of the 58th World Press Photo Award winners shows off the press

pictures that have burned images in our minds – positive ones and negative ones.

The awarded pieces were picked by a jury in eight categories (contemporary issues, daily life, general news, long-term projects, nature, portraits, sports, sport news) and selected from 97,912 images from 131 different countries.

And if that is not enough, this year’s winner was a Dane, Mads Nissen, who triumphed with a photo of a gay couple in Russia. (LK)

TAKE a close look at one of Britain’s most influential and talented artists. Post-1982, Freud mostly focused on

graphic pictures and this exhibition consists of 52 intriguing black and white body sketches he made during that period.

Overall it is a fascinating and power-ful study of the human body you don’t want to look away from.

The exhibition is part of the Louisi-ana ‘On Paper’ series and is a follow-up on a retrospective of Lucian Freud at Louisiana in 2007. (LK)

CULTURE NIGHT Oct 9, 17:00-05:00; various venues in Copenhagen; night pass 90kr, under-12s free adm; kulturnatten.dk

AUGUSTINA LEONAITE

EVER since 1993, Copenhagen’s culture vultures have been turning into night owls on this October night to take ad-vantage of this extraordinary possibility to visit different museums, art galleries, exhibition halls, churches and other cul-tural spots participating over the course of the 12-hour event. Admittance to the numerous participating venues only costs 90 kroner.

Not only does the Culture Night pass give you an access to all the places and events, it also enables you to have free transport on the city’s buses, trains and Metro all night long in the Capital Region.

And it also enables you to blood your children in culture as well. While there are a few all-out kids events early in the evening (a dance workshop with a host of DR Ramasjang and a concert by Christine Skou and Ole Kibsgaard), they can have few complaints if you decide to mix in a few preferences of your own. In many cases, simply visiting some of these venues at night (castles, dungeons, secret rooms etc) is an unforgettable experience.

The Culture Pass is available to buy at most of the train stations, all 7-Eleven kiosks, libraries and many cultural insti-tutions in the Copenhagen area.

It is a good idea to download the Culture Night’s app as it includes all the events that are suitable to Eng-lish-speakers and gives you directions on how to get there.

After all, you don’t want to have the keys to the city and spend most of your time lost on its streets.

RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL Oct 11-17, 10:00-17:00; Kronborg Castle, Kronborg 2C, Helsingør; 125kr, family options available; kronborg.dk

KRONBORG Castle is inviting everyone to the engagement party of the daugh-ter of Christian IV and the German prince!

The castle will be accordingly decked out like it’s the 1630s and filled with dif-ferent activities for the family to enjoy.

While the young ones can dress up as soldiers or nobles of the era, or try out some archery, their parents can en-joy the renaissance fair where they can buy exotic produce and delicacies.

And then everyone is invited to the knights’ tournament and the witchcraft trial. (AL)

CHRISTMAS BREW: J-DAY! Nov 6, from 20:59 onwards; all over Denmark; free adm; tuborg.dk

LYCELLE AURE BAJAR

CHRISTMAS in Denmark does not officially begin until this most-anticipat-ed event and you better be ready for it – it’s J-Day!

This is the day when the Danish brewery Tuborg releases its annual Chritsmas beer, the ‘Juleøl’, at exactly 20:59 on the first Friday of November.

For many it is the most joyous time of the year as Tuborg trucks pull up at different bars and cafes in the city, distributing free beer while cheerfully singing a traditional Tuborg Christmas brew song. The bars tend to be filled with happy customers embracing the Christmas spirit. Many dress up in the Tuborg blue-coloured Santa hats and

make a real carnival out of it. With a relatively short shelf-life of 10

weeks – although that’s a slightly longer festive season than the Victorians had in mind when they promoted the celebration of Christmas in the 19th century! – the Danes really make the most out of it and it has remained a crowd favourite guaranteed to bring the crowds out. Until not long ago it was on Thursday, but they moved it to Friday because so many students were too hungover to attend school the next day.

The Tuborg Christmas brew is a mixture of three beers: KB Hvidtøl, Tuborg FF and Tuborg Guld. It is bot-tom-fermented, wienener beer brewed on lager, with a fresh aroma of caramel malt and to complete the special brew liquorice is added. It is also brewed to complement most Scandinavian Xmas recipes.

So why not join the celebration and start the holiday festivities with a ‘Skål’!

HUBERTUS HUNT Nov 1, 10:00; Dyrehaven 8, Klampenborg; free adm; hubertusjagt.dk

THE Hubertus Hunt, the highlight of the hunting season, attracts 40,000 specta-tors and 160 riders.

Held in the Deer Park at Klampen-borg, it has become a tradition for familes to enjoy picnics in the beautiful

forest while enjoying the skilled horse-manship on display.

Experience the excitement in the air as the riders come flying over hedges, coping with a total of 35 obstacles deep landings.

The winner of this year’s hunt will be given the Hubertus chain, which is traditionally rewarded by Prince Henrik himself at the Hermitage Hunting Lodge. (LAB)

LYCELLE AURE BAJAR

A MAGICAL night awaits as the Scottish Music Parade takes to the stage with its musicians, bagpipers, dancers and drummers all the way from Edinburgh.

Let them take you on a musical journey through Scottish culture, from William Wallace and Robert the Bruce to Rob Roy and Bonnie Prince Charlie to Robert Burns and Walter Scott, with an incredible set design that incorporates Scottish castles and artists dressed up in traditional costumes. Scotland’s best dancers will put you in the party mood with their forma-tions, jaw-dropping lifts and incredible costumes.

The thrill of the performance will peak with a genuine canon blast during the Scottish hymn ‘Highland Cathedral’, as the whole of Falconer Salen resounds to the sound of the uplifting music.

Smørrebrød means “open sandwiches” and, as the name suggests, it isn’t just one dish but many. In fact, it embraces a vast number of variations of fish, meat, salads and vegetables and cheese on rye or white bread. Real smørrebrød is a pleasure to the eye and to the palate. But be careful - smørrebrød comes in almost as many different sizes as there are variations and it is more filling than you might think! The Danes eat smørrebrød all year round as a traditio nal lunch dish. It is also popular on festive occasions to gether with the family or friends. And smørrebrød is al most always accompanied by Danish beer and schnapps.Copenhagen boasts a whole range of restaurants which specialise in smørre brød – typical Danish open – faced sandwiches. They are ancient, traditional establish ments, often located below street level in cosy basements and cellars. Service at Copenhagen smørrebrød restaurants differs in style from that at normal eating places and can be an experience in its own right!Welcome to the traditional Danish kitchen! Velbekomme – Bon Appetit!

No one really has any idea when it first appeared. And no one knows who invented it, either. But everyone agrees that it is the very essence of Danish cuisine.

Smørrebrød – don’t try saying it – just taste it

The restaurant is frequented by office workers from the quarter as well as parliament, with families and tourists often in evidence! Café Petersborg is one of Copen-hagen’s very oldest restaurants with a history which dates all the way back to 1746. The cuisine is typically Danish and the res-taurant has always made it an honour to serve good, tradi-tional Danish food at reason-able prices. The menu has extended to include a range of foreign dishes which have be -come part of the Danish kitchen. Many famous Danes and foreigners have visited Café Petersborg – notably Hillary Clinton.

Husmanns Vinstue – a classic luncheon restaurant founded in 1888 – is one of the very few old basement restaurants left in Copenhagen – almost totally unchanged in style during the 125 or so years of its existence! One significant change is that women are allowed to lunch there now – they were forbiden admittance in 1912 by the then proprietress, a ban not lifted until 1981! HUSMANNS VINSTUE is today a traditional Danish smørrebrød lunch restaurant of the high est quality offering homemade specia lities composed of fresh raw materials, based on typical old Danish recipes. Opening hours mon-fri: 11.30 am – 6 pm, sat: 12.00 pm – 4 pm. Kitchen: mon-fri: 11.30 – 4pm, sat: 12 – 4 pm. Closed Sundays and Bank Holidays. All credit cards accepted. Evening parties catered for by special advance order.

A TASTE OF URUGUAY, YOU’LL CRY IF YOU HATE IT WELL DONE!

BY ELLA NAVARROWHEN I HEARD there was a restaurant in Copen-hagen serving meat from Uruguay, I had to stop by and see how true they were to my roots. I had to make sure we were being well-represented.

NEWBIES IN TOWNKöD opened just four months ago. For those of you unaware of what its name means, it is the Danish word for meat, but with a low-case Swed-ish ‘ö’, which must make it a little bit … hipster maybe? No Uruguayan influences there, that’s for sure.

Located on a quiet cobblestone street near the canals with a head-on view of Børsen, it’s easy to find thanks to a red carpet entrance that might mislead first-time visitors into believing they are about to enter somewhere terribly exclusive, when the reality is relatively cosy.

You can choose to sit upstairs, where you can admire the street through the big windows and the chefs working their magic in the open-space kitchen, or opt for the basement if you’d prefer to have a more private meal or are dining with a big group.

SANGRÍA FOR THE SEÑORITASWe were offered a big drinks menu (too big to fit on the table!) that included a variety of options for aperitifs, but we chose to start off with the house sangria because the experience thus far had reminded us of a warm Spanish night and as they say: “A perfect night starts with sangría”.

Red wine with squeezed oranges, vanilla, a hint of cinnamon with bourbon and cava, it was temptingly dainty to the taste, superbly com-plementing a salmon tartare starter we enjoyed while we waited for the main course.

BOYS DON’T CRY, BUT MEN DOI am the type who likes my meat cooked, and when I mean cooked, I mean really cooked, like almost hard. My dad has always hated it that I ask for it like that, especially as it means I am always the last to eat. Still, he’s 11,000 km away. But then I read in the menu that the chef at KöD also “cries a little” when the well-done option is ordered, but what can I say: everyone has their own pref-erences. At least my friend chose medium-rare so he didn’t have to cry twice!

Our choice was the Hereford ribeye beef steak – a 300 gram whopper from Uruguay that was an enormous piece of meat! And it proved to be de-licious and just perfect with sides that included

sweet potato fries and tomato with mozzarella and pesto.

We then followed up with a Danish dessert. The rødgrød med fløde recommended by our waiter was light enough to fit the little space we had saved for dessert. The wild berries and all-round colourful dish gave our evening a closure beyond compare.

I now know whenever I get homesick I can stop by KöD because its meat reminds me of my coun-try. It tasted as if it had come out of my dad’s bar-becue on a summer’s night, and just as the chef had promised: “We do it true to your country”.

Fabio’s Falkoner Allee 56, Frederiksberg; open Sun-Wed 17:00-22:00, Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; 3537 9977;restaurantfabio.dkThe warmth, quality and love invested by Italian res-taurant owners Fabio and Christine makes this dining experience truly enriching – like a familial hug by a Mediterranean evening. ‘Fabio’s temptations’, the an-tipasto, included homemade aubergine pie and car-paccio with a parmesan crisp, were out of this world! And given a last night on earth scenario, I’d opt for the Tagliatelle ai Funghi Porcini – ribbon pasta with mixed mushrooms, truffle cream and freshly grated parme-san, which was harmoniously paired with the rich tex-ture and fine nuances of a Barolo della casa. While it’s worth noting the menu is limited, who needs 50 dishes of grey when you can provide six of undeniable brilliance? The mussels were a mix of the colours of the deep: purple, black, orange, green. Its buttery garlic aroma brought us to our knees. While different shades of green adorned my risotto: aspara-gus, peas and tarragon – truly a work of art. (EN)

TALKIES AND SPEAK-EASIES: EVERYONE DO THE CHARLESTON LIKE IT’S 1928!

BY ELLA NAVARRORIGHT NEXT TO Torvehallerne, we found Boot-leggers, a Prohibition era-inspired bar run by manager Eugene Melnik, who invited us into his illegal world and pampered us with a night of guilty pleasures.

It truly is a place for the prohibited, whether it’s tastes, new flavours or secrets. As Bernard Shaw once said, and they state on one of their walls: “Alcohol is the anesthesia by which we endure the operation of life.”

NEVER TOO YOUNG TO ROARMelnik draws his inspiration from the 1920s and the 30s, which is why the bar’s named after the illegal transporters of alcoholic beverages during Prohibition, an era that lasted from 1920 to 1933 leaving nobody any wiser what its real goal had been. If anything, the speakeasys made people drink even more. Still, it wasn’t just the gang-sters who profited as creatively it flourished too as people rebelled against a common enemy (not too dissimilar to Vietnam).

There is a charm in “trying to go back”, Melnik explains, because we all know forbidden things attract and intrigue people. And this is what the guys at Bootleggers want to bring back to life: that period of excitement when people went crazy for what they were denied and it became glamorous to be secretive.

“It’s all about making you live a night like it’s the roaring 20s!” says Melnik.

CASTRO WOULD LOVE IT HERE!Together with Leonardo Flores, the main bartend-er, this duo will leave you dazed and confused by the magic they perform behind the bar. Flores’ gift radiates through his mixing show, of which the end-result is exquisite from the very first sip to the last, a swallow that leaves your palate pain-fully asking for more.

Perfect for the ladies and no doubt inspired by my choice of cherry lipstick for the night, Flores first offered us the ‘Red Lips’ cocktail. But don’t worry, it won’t sabotage your make-up although you’ll be staggered by its mix of berries and white chocolate.

However, it doesn’t take us long to realise that the gentlemen are the more pampered here! A cocktail callded ‘Old Fashioned’ comes with a bo-nus: a golden envelope containing a fine Cuban cigar and a discount at The Gentleman’s store, which you can drop by the next day if you survive the night!

I just hope the next time ‘Red Lips’ comes with a free lipstick. Is that negotiable?

SOME LIKE IT HOT!After all that fun, our night ended in spicy fashion. Captivated by the idea of trying chilli in a drink, I dared myself to try the ‘Chilli Berry Martini’, which I now regard as my favourite. First you’re

hit by the sweetness, then the alcohol and final-ly the tabasco, and boy is that some feeling. The ‘Mexican Salad’ also comes recommended if you like it hot.

“We like pushing it to the limit”, says Melnik, who advises everyone to stay alert for the events they host every weekend to surprise their cus-tomers and keep them on their toes. Just like at a speakeasy, your whole evening can be trans-formed in the blink of an eye.

A VEGAN RESTAURANT WORTH RABBITING ON ABOUT

BY LUCIE KYCA

YOU THINK RAW food is boring and only rabbits eat carrots for breakfast? We have found a place in the heart of Copenhagen that will teach you differently and make you crave carrots and avoca-do for breakfast for days after.

MANNA FROM HEAVENWe made our way to simpleRAW one early Tues-day morning. The place is laid out entirely in white, and when I stepped down the small stairs to the restaurant on Gråbrødretorv, it felt like I was entering a heaven of raw, healthy, fresh food and that was exactly what we got.

The restaurant serves mainly unprocessed, raw food – which means the veggies have not been heated above 48 degrees. All their dishes are en-tirely vegan and if you have any other allergies, they will make it work.

CAREFUL SELECTIONThe breakfast menu is not overwhelming but carefully chosen, offering a choice between a breakfast plate and brunch plate. Besides that, they have an endless variation of different juices, smoothies, shakes and energy shots – which I will come to later – and of course coffee. I ordered one with homemade almond milk and it was the best decision of the day. The creamy foam with its distinct almond taste was the best almond milk I had ever tried – I was a vegan for some time so I did have a lot and I can assure you there are differences. Soon the delicious plates found their way to us – we ordered the brunch plate and the breakfast plate, together with the juice and the smoothie.

AN ABSOLUTE FEASTThe brunch plate was so big it could have fed two people. Consisting of with carrot-avocado rice pa-per rolls with soy sauce, cashew yoghurt with ber-ries and crumble, parsley cream, avocado, mari-nated pineapple and a delicious crown on top, a chocolate fudge, it was a raw food paradise. Crisp veggies, great colours and vitamin shots – three strong juice shots with ginger, cayenne and chilli – sparked our tastebuds and got the metab-olism going. The breakfast plate – a gluten-free bun, vegan cheese, fruit and cashew yoghurt – was also one of a kind.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDI can highly recommend this place (there is an-other restaurant in Vesterbro, which is celebrat-ing its fifth birthday this year) if you are looking for a totally different brunch and want to take a delicious break from pancakes, French toast and scrambled eggs. And remember that they also have lunch and din-ner menus. You can find a vegan burger, tapas, Asian dishes and incredibly good-looking des-serts. I will definitely come back to try those! This place will even make the hearts of non-ve-gans beat faster and one thing is guaranteed: you will not miss the meat on your plate.

Kalaset Vendersgade 16, Cph K; open 10:00-00:00, until 02:00 Sat & Sun, until 23:00 on Sun; brunch 45-120kr; kalaset.dkDrop into Kalaset’s hyggeligt-ness and claim a table quickly – brunch gets busy. The drinks choices are on the walls, so read them and the menu as you queue to order. The staff make fantastic coffees and didn’t laugh at me pronouncing Kødbyen! Kalaset focuses on organic and homemade food – down to the ketchup and Nutel-la. Their savoury plates are delicious and satisfying, the pancakes decadent. Top tip: order two smaller plates over a set brunch. Smiling, leisurely service and quirky décor make Kalaset an ideal weekend kickstarter. (JM)

WHERE COFFEE ENTHUSIASTS FALL IN LOVEBY LYCELLE AURE BAJAR

THERE IS NO doubt the baristas in this coffee basement just around the corner from Halm-torvet know exactly what they are doing. With more than 10 years of experience handling freshly-brewed coffee and providing an excellent selection of beans and equipment, Risteriet is a mecca for all coffee-lovers.

Their first branch on Studiestræde opened its doors in 2004 to primarily just be a coffee shop, but it went on to sell machines and a variety of ar-omatic beans. Following its healthy success, they opened up a new shop on Helgolandsgade, just near the main train station, which enables them to also serve pastries and snacks to passing com-muters.

RETHINKING COLD COFFEE

Upon our visit to Risteriet, we thought it rude to try anything other than their house specialties, and they didn’t disappoint. Their very own blend of cappuccino, complete with a distinctive froth design, was nicely presented. But the standout was their ‘cold brew’. It is brewed using only cold water and Kenyan beans that are lightly roasted.

According to manager Fie Berlin, it is unlikely cold coffee can be brewed in this way without having a bitter aftertaste. However, the drink has just the

right amount of bitterness and also has a hint of sweetness in it. You will never look at iced black coffee the same way again.

HOME-BAKED GOODNESS

The combination of their freshly-roasted coffee and home-made pastries are divine. For only 90kr, they serve a morning plate on their menu that includes your selected drink of either latte or cappucino, along with bread, butter, cheese, croissant and their own yoghurt with campote and granola.

This might sound like quite a light meal for most people, but we were stuffed after breakfast. Fie served us their home-made brownies as well as an extra something just to top it off.

WARM AND COSYEvery sip from a beverage tastes even better when the atmosphere is calm and relaxing. A lot of the regulars at Risteriet are local office workers or freelancers who enjoy working quietly in the spacious surroundings over a cup of coffee, taking advantage of the free wi-fi. Pleasant soft music meanwhile sets a nice mood. While the lighting is dim, it gets enough sunlight from its big windowsAll in all, it was a pleasant experience visiting Ris-teriet and we won’t be hesitant about returning. Enjoying a cup of freshly-brewed coffee in good company and a cosy atmosphere – what could be better than that.

THE COPENHAGEN POST TOURISM MAGAZINE | CPHPOST.DK 22 CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Sourcing unique presents for your loved ones – who knows, maybe you’ll end up with a piece fashioned by the next Faberge!

Like every year, Copenhagen will become perme-ated with Christmas spirit way earlier than De-cember.

From mid to late November, the wafting smell of almonds and mulled wine will become a famil-

iar one, indicating the next corner of the city will reveal yet another Christmas market.

But while some are cosy and genuinely heart-warming, most of them are tacky and de-cidedly downbeat, offering the same fare as last year and food items you’ll probably regret buying after a few mouthfuls.

GEMS IN THE ROUGH

Nevertheless, beyond the generic ones, there are

a few gems – namely the arty markets where stu-dents sell the crafts they’ve been making as part of their studies.

Mostly held in late November, they’re perfectly timed for some early Christmas shopping – af-ter all, who can resist unique pieces at bargain prices? And you never know, but maybe the 200 kroner necklace you just bought might have been made by the next Faberge.

From jewellery and Christmas decorations to ceramics and clothing, there are present op-portunities for every member of the family and friends too.

New Designers’ Market Dec 5-6 & 12-13, open 10:00-17:00; HC Ørsteds Vej 18, Baghuset, Frederiks-berg; dndm.dkThe first New Designers’ Market was organised in 2008 with just six par-ticipants, and since then it has done a great job at promoting and extend-ing the market for innovative Danish design. Last year’s market hosted 21 designers and attracted up to 5,000 vis-itors each weekend. So if you’re search-ing for perculiar and unique gifts, this is a place you should definitely pass by, particularly as it enables you to speak to the designers themselves.

THE COPENHAGEN POST TOURISM MAGAZINE | CPHPOST.DK 23CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Ten of the best Xmas markets to embrace the Danish festive period.

Visiting most Christmas markets isn’t really about the shopping, it’s about the experience. Treat your-self to a cup of gløgg (mulled wine), a round of æbleskiver and let the festive spirit envelop you for a mo-ment.
