In his thesis, Living, Laughing, and Loving in Guatemala City: A Practical Theology of peace building, the promovendus explored René Girard’s mimetic theory as a lens to interpret the Guatemalan collective woundedness and find a practical theology of peacebuilding that responds to it. The grassroots leaders of the Centre for Transforming Mission Guatemala network were the co-researchers that helped gather and interpret the data for this work. Different streams of liberation theologies were used as dialogue partners to enrich the contextual analysis. Other key concepts that informed this thesis include third-space, non-violent hermeneutics, and practical theology of liberation. The interpretation of the findings of the research led to a communal proposal of the concept of human catechism. Human catechism was found to be an ontological transformation mechanism which enlightens contemporary society’s hidden scapegoat. Consequently, human catechism emerged as a response not only to both the Guatemalan collective woundedness but also other cultures’ wounds. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

Earlmeth Chinyena In his thesis, Commensality within Jesus’ household and African existentialism: A critique of African Pentecostalism, the promovendus explored ideas of economy and welfare in Jesus’ household in Mark’s gospel and uses the findings as basis to critique ideas of welfare in selected African Pentecostal churches in Zimbabwe. The study used social scientific methods to reveal social and economic dynamics based on kinship, hospitality and sharing in the Jesus movement. African existentialist philosophy concerning ‘being’ or existence was used to contextualise the study and give meaning to the selected texts. The study discovered that Jesus’ economic model characterised by sharing and hospitability is central in critiquing false spiritualities of greed and self-enrichment found in most African Pentecostal churches. Furthermore, African existentialist philosophy is a critical tool in giving a contextual reading of Jesus’ alternative economy and suggesting an inclusive economy for Africa. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

Dalcy Badeli Dlamini In her thesis, The process of mourning and remarrying for widowers in Swazi culture: A pastoral challenge, the promovenda explored and carried out scientific research in order to verify the assumptions of how Swazi culture impacts on widowers in Swaziland. The Church, which is supposed to be a beacon of hope, has also compromised principles in order to fit into the Swazi Culture, leaving the widowers in a vulnerable state. The research has proven that remarrying before mourning a loved one leads many to emotional strain, chronic illnesses and untimely death. The researcher challenged pastoral caregivers to journey with widowers as they transition to remarry.

In his thesis, A pastoral perspective on depression among youth in Soweto, the promovendus explored the interplay of Western and African cultural understandings of what is respectively known as depression in Western and demonic possession in African contexts. This is a complex matter, which complicates the assistance to youth who live in a westernised environment and who suffer from what is called depression. This study aims to contribute in this regard, specifically in the field of practical theology and its sub-discipline of pastoral care and counselling. It was found that depression was often caused or exacerbated by factors in the environment, such as extreme trauma, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, poverty, unemployment, family violence and sexual abuse. Based on this finding the contribution is to reframe pastoral care and counselling with depressed youth from an African perspective. A cooperative model where clinicians, social workers, pastoral caregivers and traditional healers work together to provide holistic care, is proposed. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

Victor Letuka Seperenkane

In his thesis, Power abuse by church leaders: A case study, the promovendus enters into the space of senior ministers who violate and abuse probationers. His thesis traces the misuse of power abuse by Church leadership. His methodology is centred on healing pastorally the candidate, so that they can pastorally care for others. The focus is based on pastoral care in the context of the abuse of power in a practical theological context. Various models of practical theology are analysed by the promovendus, in order to serve as the primary diversity of human experience in the lives of probationers. Other key concepts that informed this thesis included lack of understanding of the struggle that enter ministry without any guidance thereafter. The system also recast the model of addressing how to journey with participants when they receive news that is not favourable. A model of healing deep wounds for those affected, violated, oppressed and abused by the system must be in place, in order to challenge traditional notions in ministry. Sello Edwin Mabe

The study, Chaplaincy in South African government hospitals: A holistic approach to care , the promovendus investigated the need for the possible establishment of chaplaincy in South African government hospitals for holistic approach to care that includes patients’ religious and spiritual dimensions of being. The research data from the interviewed respondents confirms that there is a need for the possible establishment of the professional health care chaplaincy in the South African government hospital settings in order to address the patients’ religious and spiritual needs; and the need to employ the medical health care model that will embrace chaplaincy to address the religious and spiritual needs of the patients in line with the patients’ rights to considerable health care which resonates with the global health care practice. The study contributes to the broad academic discipline of practical theology.

In his thesis, Early Catholicism and the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, the promovendus analysed the impact made by institutionalisation to the life and ministry of the United Methodist Church. The study employed data collection methods including a qualitative research questionnaire and unstructured interviews, and made use of historical-criticism, theological analysis and social-scientific criticism as exegetical approaches. The study delineated the institutions of Early Catholicism and juxtaposed them with that of the United Methodist Church’s organisational structure. The conclusion reached is that Early Catholicism helped in the shaping of organizational structures of the United Methodist and other denominations across the globe. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

Mangaliso Matshobane Mbangiso

In his thesis, Pastoral succession in independent Pentecostal churches: A pastoral challenge, the promovendus explored the reasons behind contentions during pastoral succession in independent Pentecostal churches. Unlike in traditional and classical Pentecostal churches where there is a per iodic succession system, depending on individual polities, independent churches have no pastoral appointment system. They have one pastor who leads the church whether as a founder or a long-term serving pastor, who will be succeeded only at retirement, at death or in case of a moral failure. Some of these contentions have resulted in protracted legal battles. When a pastor exits ministry, the congregation goes through relational, intrapsychic, functional and systemic losses. When losses are not mourned, the grief experienced by congregations can be complicated and they may even become dysfunctional. Conversation, communion and compassion are used as a pastoral care methodology for journeying with congregations and helping them to mourn their losses. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

Peter Mhlabane In his thesis, The experience of single mothers in raising adolescent boys: A pastoral challenge, the promovendus explored the phenomena of the experience of single mothers, raising adolescent boys. The researcher reviewed and conducted scientific research in order to validate the reality of the phenomenon. Primary and secondary sources were consulted and compared with findings from grounded theory which is a methodology for developing a theory grounded in the data. This study attempted to support the single mothers who raise rebellious adolescent boys. Due to their boys’ mutinous behaviour, these mothers are also stigmatized by the public. The research challenges the pastoral care givers to journey with single mothers who are wounded by the rebelliousness of their adolescent boys and also to find constructive ways of reconstructing the boys’ behaviour.

In his thesis, The "Poor of Christ" and their significant impact on setting the scene for the 16th Century Reformation, the promovendus investigated the impact of this movement, commonly also referred to as Waldensians, from a new angle. Rather than just studying the movement and its teaching, the historical context was analysed to explore the impact the movement had on the Roman Church and specifically on the German regions of the Holy Roman Empire that became the home ground for the 16th Century Reformation. The researcher synthesised the information and showed the correlation between regions where the Poor of Christ were operating and those that were on the forefront of protesting for the reformation, indicating that the reformational thinking was already present in the population through the ministry of the Poor of Christ for generations prior to the 16th century. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

Godlove Ntem Sevidzem In his thesis, Social justice in employment and remuneration of workers in Cameroon in light of the parable of the Workers in the Vineyard (Mt 20:1-15): An African Biblical interpretation, the promovendus examined the issue of social justice related to the employment and remuneration of workers in Cameroon as a prototype of most African economies. The thesis indicates that most previous readings that applied the parable to issues of social justice were done by Western scholars, dealing with questions and issues foreign to Africans. The promovendus read the parable from an African perspective in a quest for a biblical theology of social justice for Africa by an African, and concludes that if the parable was told in an African setting, the vineyard owner can be seen as an African title holder or elite who dispenses resources in a just manner. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

In his thesis, Migration from Historic Mission churches to Pentecostal churches in Ghana, the promovendus explored the factors which cause members of historic mission churches (HMCs) to migrate to Pentecostal churches by using both qualitative and quantitative methods with structured questions, interviews and personal observations for data gathering. Analysis was based on the integration of data with insights from literature and participant observation, pexploring the trends and impact of migration from HMCs to Pentecostal churches, while recommending a pastoral response. The research confirms the reality of migration to Pentecostal churches. The research explored responses to the findings and laid the basis for a new imagination for the historic mission churches as missional communities in which members care and love one another, reaching out to the marginalised, the poor and the broken-hearted in the power of the Holy Spirit. It represents a contextual reflection on the missional vocation of the church.

In his thesis, Mission and development in the International Central Gospel Church in Ghana, the promovendus explored the mission and development approaches enabling sustainable mission and development work. Employing qualitative case studies, semi-structured interviews, solicited participants’ views, he constructed meaning to the occurrence of mission and development inductively. From these findings he developed the “God centered” and “members centered” mission approach. This approach draws divine resourcefulness from “God centeredness”, and human resourcefulness from “members’ centeredness” creating synthesis of divinity and humanity in mission partnership resulting in sustainable mission able to impact on development. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

In his thesis, The tough-love proposal: A novel theodicy, the promovendus challenged Rowe’s theological premise (namely that God prevents all gratuitous evils) by supplying a morally justifying reason (“tough love”) for God to exist in the presence of evil (gratuitous or otherwise). The study endeavoured to stay within the bounds of Christian orthodoxy in affirming that God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and the omnibenevolent creator of the universe. It introduced a novel theodicy, the “tough love proposal” consisting of three premises leading to the conclusion that God can exist with evil. As humans deny God’s existence, God lets them go their own way (resulting in good and evil). In “tough love” God waits patiently for them to respond to his message of salvation as proclaimed by the Church and the Holy Spirit. The research concludes that evils in this world (gratuitous, excessive, horrendous) are strictly the results of people living independently from God. The degree Doctor of Philosophy

In her thesis, A Journey of Missional intent: Organizational Strategy in the Context of God's Mission, the promovenda explored the concept of journey as a potential approach to organisational thinking and planning. The research compared the journey concept with common business metaphors and methodologies. Findings affirmed the theory that traditional planning strategies lack adaptability and appropriateness for current and future global contexts, particularly for Christian organisations. Findings from a survey of leaders of Christian organisations worldwide revealed a broad and deep multicultural understanding of journey as personal and collective, experiential and learned through literature, including Scripture, and history. The concept of journey was demonstrated as potentially able to provide a more biblically and missiologically-aligned approach to organisational thinking and planning as opposed to traditional methodologies. Research case study findings further demonstrated the multicultural and global nature of the journey concept and its flexibility and adaptability in complex multicultural and global contexts.

Lorette Elizabeth Arendse In her thesis, Inequality in the public basiceducation system: The role of the courts in effecting transformation, the promovenda critically evaluated the role and contribution of the South African courts towards the radical transformation of the public education system. She contended that although the approach of the High courts has led to some positive change, deeply rooted patterns of racial and class inequality persist in the education system. She concluded that the Constitutional Court’s approach of meaningful engagement has hampered the apex Court’s ability to deal effectively with this systemic inequality and accordingly, threatens the project of radical transformation in public education. In her thesis, A human-rights-based approach to mining of solid minerals in Nigeria, the promovenda explored the high cost, in human rights terms, mining has imposed on Nigerian communities. She also undertook an innovative investigation on how the Nigerian government can more effectively address the adverse human rights impacts of mining activities in the country. The promovenda suggested that the government incorporate a human rights-based approach to mining in the applicable laws and described how this could be done. In developing her proposals, the promovenda considered the lessons the Nigerian government can learn from the history of mining regulation in Nigeria and from the legal frameworks for dealing with the human rights impacts of mining in South Africa and Ontario, Canada. This research contributes substantially by providing new insights into how the human rights risks associated with mining can be managed in the applicable regulatory regimes. In her thesis, Power dynamics in the provision of legal abortion: A feminist perspective on nurses and conscientious objection in South Africa, the promovenda explored the factors influencing nurses in the exercise of conscientious objection to the provision of abortion in South Africa. The thesis used doctrinal and empirical research methods to argue that understanding nurses’ practices in the exercise of conscientious objection required attention to the intersection between gender hierarchies and power arrangements. Theoretically, the arguments are predicated on African feminist theories and the Foucauldian analysis of power. The thesis is an important contribution to the body of knowledge on abortion and conscientious objection. It is an original contribution which draws on feminist socio-legal methodologies and Foucauldian discourse analysis to identify the complex and interwoven legal, political, and socio-cultural contexts present in the exercise of conscientious objection and the place of power.

In his thesis, Promoting gender justice in Nigeria through constitutionalising the prevention of maternal death, the promovendus explored how the domestic constitution could be used as a juridical instrument for promoting gender justice in Nigeria by eradicating the discrimination and disadvantage that underlie the prevalence of maternal deaths. By using equality and non-discrimination as the main category of analysis, the thesis identified the Capabilities Approach as developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum as a particularly fitting approach for transforming constitutional norms into enabling instruments for realising the gender justice, including the right to health. The thesis makes an important contribution towards infusing constitutional jurisprudence that is historically linked to formal equality with a notion of substantive equality that is sensitive to the health needs of pregnant women.
