Fredericton Business Ambassador Program Renewal FoundedasafirstofitskindinCanadain2002andmodelledbyothercommunities,theFrederictonBusinessAmbassadorTeamgrewto720people.In2013,theprogramwaspausedduetothesecondmentoftheprogramcoordinatortomanageVision2020.Laterthisyear,IgnitewillhostaFrederictonAmbassadorreuniontoignitetheflame,andreinvigoratetheprogramwithaleadgenerationandbusinessfocus.

Choose FrederictonChooseFrederictonisanongoingcampaignaspartofstudent/talentretentionefforts.Itencompassesvariouscommunicationsusingsocialmedia,andadvertising,aswellasanannualeventdesignedtonetworkthestudentswiththebusinesscommunitytocreateawarenessaboutlocalcareeropportunities.

Opportunity UtilizingtheSiemensSmartGridprojectasacasestudy,thereisopportunitytotargettheproductdevelopmentneedsoflargeglobalcorporationsusingtheattributesofourregionalmarket (talent,researchcapacity,digitalinfrastructure,etc.)acrossallfourprioritygrowthsectors.

Natural Resource Development Withover$7billioninprojectedinvestmentinmajor,provincialnaturalresourceprojects,IgniteformeditsNaturalResourceTaskForce,chairedbyAndrewSteeves,tomaximizeopportunitieswithrespecttoresponsi-bledevelopment.ItwaslaunchedMay2015with70peopleinattendanceandgreatnewscoverage.

Startup Task Force Therearenumerousorganizationsinthe economicdevelopmentecosystem,helpingstartupscommercializetheirideasintogame-changingproductsandservices,anddrivingour‘StartupCapital’vision.OneofthekeydriversthathasstrengthenedtheentrepreneurialecosystemwastheformationoftheStartupTaskForce,ChairedbyRiversCorbett.

PlanetHatchhasexpandeditsprogrammingtoincludeabroaderintakemodeltoincludeallstartups.WeofferprogramssuchasanIdeaLab,athemedentrepreneurinresidenceprogram,andOfficeHoursforprofessionalservices.

KarenMurdockhasbeensecondedastheChiefProgramOfficerforPlanetHatch,workingwithMikeMazerolle,BusinessStartupSpecialistandLisaKinney,EntrepreneurialServicesCoordinator.

WorkingthroughtheStartupTaskForce,serviceofferingshavebeenalignedwiththevariousstagesofbusiness(ideation,validation,growth,maturity)usinga‘Subway’analogy.Theconceptisthatnomatterwheretheentrepreneurgetsoffthesubway,theycanaccessentrepreneurialsupport,andallstakeholderscanhelpthemnavigatetheecosystem.

KnowledgePark,NewBrunswick’sonlytechnologyandresearchpark,isaclusteringenvironmentforknowledge-basedcompanies.ManagedbyWadeHarrington,Accounting&Operations,theparkishometo37companiesandover800employeesgeneratinganannualGDPimpactof$145million.

KnowledgeParkisafor-profitorganization,whichre-investsrevenuebackintoeconomicdevelopment.KnowledgeParkwasthekeydriverinthecreationofPlanetHatch.TheParkisamemberofthenationalAssociationofUniversityResearchParks(AURP),currentlychairedbyKnowledgeParkCEO,LarryShaw. KnowledgeParkislocatedwithintheheartoftheInnovationDistrict (see page 15),whichisatwokilometreradiusencompassingover60R&DorganizationsincludingtheUniversityofNewBrunswick,whichoutputsover75%oftheprovince’suniversity-relatedresearch.
