Russell garments always look the part, but we know they have to work hard too. We never forget the need for our garments to deliver quality across the board, and withstand the rigours of day to day use.

When we develop our products, we have a number of measures by which Russell Quality is judged:

Fit for purposeIn the same way we understand the importance of quality, we also understand that the specific requirements of uniform and workwear are formidable. With this in mind, we ensure we provide a range of sizes, materials, finishes and features that allow you to choose a range that best suits your needs, not to mention an individual’s requirements. Our Product Range: 127 styles over ten garment categories, everything from polos and sweats to blazers and shorts.

Sizing: We cover the full size spectrum: XXS to 6XL. And children’s sizes, too.

Uses: From everyday to luxury.

Fits: Cut to fit all shapes.

Features: Waterproof zips, neck tape, drop tails, reinforced seams, adjustable cuffs… the list goes on.

Fabrics: Never less than high-quality cotton: ring-spun, combed ring-spun and Pima. Performance fabrics and finishes: Tencel®, GORE-TEX®, soft shell, bonded membranes, CORDURA®, DuPont™ and Teflon®.

Finishing touches: The all important details such as taped seams, French seams, stable hems and cuffs and dye-to-match buttons.

A tailored fit that creates a soft feminine shape. This cut has a slightly tapered waist making our Oxford and Ultimate Non-Iron ranges a ‘must-have’ for all working wardrobes.

Designed for women who prefer a looser fitting shirt that won’t compromise their feminine silhouette. Our Poplin shirts are the perfect choice.

With a slim-line silhouette, it looks equally at home in a contemporary bar as it does in the boardroom. If it’s a fitted look you need try our most popular Fitted and Tencel® ranges of shirts.

We’ve taken our classic shirt, gently tapered the waist and made it narrower in the shoulder and bicep. If you’re after a contemporary style of shirt then our 958 or 959 Ultimate Non-Iron shirts are exactly what you’re looking for.

Our most traditional fit of shirt. The cut is relaxed with a long tail that stays tucked in. If this is the style you’re looking for we’d suggest our Ultimate Non-Iron, Poplin or Oxford ranges.

The following section explains the key technical terms relevant for Russell garments, enabling you to make a confident choice.

Fabrics can be made from a single fibre or a mix of different fibres. The best fibre of fibres to be used depends on the garment type and the intended use of the garment.

CottonCotton is the most commonly used natural fibre, a product of the cotton plant (Gossypium), of which the species Gossypium Hirsutum accounts for the vast majority of world cotton production. Cotton fibres are of different lengths. These fibres can be spun into yarn in different ways, the treatment of the shorter fibres determining the quality of the yarn.

Open end yarnRussell does not use any open end yarn. This is the simplest and most cost efficient spinning method, resulting in the lowest quality of cotton yarns. Shorter fibres stand away from the direction of the yarn, leading to a coarser, fuzzier feel and lower fabric life span, as the shorter fibres tend to be washed out over time.

Ring spun yarnRing spinning integrates shorter fibres into the yarn by adjusting them with the longer yarns. This leads to a smoother yarn with a softer hand feel and higher durability. Russell only uses yarn that is at least ring spun quality or better.

Combed ring spun yarnBefore ring spinning takes place, a combing process extracts shorter fibres and aligns the cotton fibres. This allows for a still finer and smoother quality of yarn, further increasing hand feel and durability. Combed ring spun cotton is used for many Russell products.

Pima CottonPima Cotton uses the fibre of a different species of cotton plant, Gossypium Barbadense. Accounting for only a small proportion of world cotton production it is also known as Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton. The long fibres of this species can be spun into a superior fine and smooth yarn, used for luxurious high-end fabrics.

PolyesterPolyester is one of the most common and most versatile man-made fibres. Modern polyester fibres combine excellent performance and durability with high wearer comfort and pleasant appearance. Often polyester is blended with cotton to combine the advantages of natural and man-made fibres. Performance garments are often made from 100% polyester (or blended with some elastane), as modern polyester fabrics can provide high degrees of breathability and moisture transfer.

NylonThe durability and strength of nylon make it a popular choice for high performance garments such as jackets, allowing for a high degree of breathability and moisture transfer. Russell uses nylon fabrics for part of its jacket range.

Tencel®A man-made fibre using a natural raw material (woodpulp from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees), and produced in an environmentally friendly process, Tencel® has superior hand feel, is very skin friendly and provides excellent moisture transfer properties. Tencel® is generally blended with other fibres, Russell uses blends with cotton.

ElastaneAn elastic fibre that is usually blended at low percentages (between 3% and 10% content) to achieve fabrics with stretch properties. The higher the elastane content is, the more a fabric will stretch and adapt to the wearer’s body contours.

Glossary

Peached fabricFabric surface is softened by emery covered rollers. This emerizing process breaks the surface of the yarns, creating a softer hand feel. Peached fabrics are used in Russell’s casual twill shirts.

Fleece fabricA knitted garment (polyester or poly/cotton) is subjected to a strong brushing process, creating a deep fluffy surface. Used 2-sided to create outdoor fleece and microfleece fabrics, and 1-sided for the inner side of most sweatshirts.

Non-IronFormal shirts that don’t require ironing and keep wrinkle free while worn. Traditionally achieved by applying a coating onto the fabric. Russell’s ultimate non-iron shirts use a modern steaming technology that achieves superior non-iron properties without any coating.

Stain resistanceCoating that reduces the capability of dirt to bond with the fibres of the fabric, making it easier to launder stains. Russell uses DuPontTM Teflon® and SpotShieldTM coatings.

Durable Water Repellence (DWR) and Water Repellence (WR)Chemical treatment for jackets that bonds to the outer material and increases the surface tension so that water droplets bead off.

WaterproofA fabric’s resistance to water pressure without allowing moisture penetration. Mostly measured in “mm watercolumn”. Minimum to be deemed waterproof is 1500mm (note: falling rain on average measures 1000mm). An alternative measurement is kPa.

BreathableA fabric’s ability to transfer moisture vapour. Measured as Moisture Vapour Transfer (MVT) and reported as grams of water/ per square metre/ per 24hrs (g/m2/per 24hrs). The higher the measurement the more breathable the fabric.

RET (Resistance to moisture vapour transfer) is an alternative measuring system for breathability, the lower the RET factor, the higher the breathability.

Laminated MembraneMicro porous membrane is laminated to either 1 or 2 fabrics to give waterproof/windproof and breathable performance. The ‘Brain’ of fabric technology, used for soft shell and outdoor jackets.

PU CoatingA clear or milky coating applied to the reverse of fabric to create waterproof and breathable outdoor jackets.

Taped SeamsUsed to weld two seams together and seal over needle holes made from stitching making the product watertight. Only fully taped garments can be deemed waterproof.

Fabric Treatments

Side VentsMost polo shirts are fitted with side vents to adapt better to the wearer’s movements. In most of our polo shirts the side vents are reinforced on the inside to allow for a better drape.

Drop tailMany garments that are designed to be worn outdoors and/or for work purposes are fitted with a drop tail, with the back of the garment longer than the front. When bending downwards the front of the garment doesn’t hinder, whilst the back still covers the wearer against chill, wind and weather.

Panelled constructionUsed for some fleeces and sweatshirts, a contoured panel is set in on each side of the garment. The irregular shape of the panels improves adaptation of the garment to the body shape of the wearer and is especially suitable for garments worn in the context of physical work.

Collar standParticularly strong construction between main body and collar, used by Russell for heavy duty polos and sweatshirts, providing a stronger collar.

Neck tapeA neck tape covers the neck seam of garments like polos and sweatshirts, preventing the seam rubbing against the neck of the wearer and adding additional stability to the neck section of the garment.

Raglan shouldersShoulder construction without shoulder seam. The arm panels extend straight up to the neck.

Double layer shouldersUsed on heavy duty garments. The double layer of fabric and the absence of a seam on top of the shoulder increase durability and comfort when carrying loads.

2 button adjustable shirt cuffClassical shirt cuff with two buttons allowing tighter or looser fastening.

Double buttoned shirt cuffWider modern style cuff fastened with two buttons.

Yarns can be processed in many ways to create fabrics with different properties. The most basic distinction is between knitted and woven fabrics.

Knitted fabricsYarns are processed by creating structures of knots. Different knit patterns create different fabric characteristics. Knitted garments all have a degree of natural stretch, depending on the knitting method.

JerseyPerhaps the most common pattern, used for t-shirts, sweats, fleeces and similar garment types. Provides some natural stretch and a high level of stability.

Pique A fabric generally used for polo shirts. Most commonly used is the single tuck pique, with its finer micro pique variation using finer yarn and a narrower knitting pattern. The double tuck pique is a pattern producing a characteristic honeycomb pattern with superior durability and a softer hand feel.

PoplinPoplin provides a smooth hand feel and an elegant looking surface, making it one of the most common weave types for formal shirt fabrics. It’s tightly woven and provides excellent durability.

TwillVarying the crossovers of the two yarns, warp and weft, creates diagonal patterns which improve the flow and drape of a garment. Russell uses twill weaves for shirt fabrics, as well as for workwear trousers, the good flow of the fabric combining durability with wearer comfort.

Micro-TwillA very fine weave using thinner and smoother yarns, combining excellent flow and drape with the elegance of a fine weave fabric. An excellent fabric for premium formal shirts.

CanvasCanvas is a very strong and durable plain weave. Russell uses canvas fabric for heavy duty workwear trousers and jackets.

KnitwearThe fabric generally associated with “knitting”, used for pullovers, cardigans and similar garments.

1x1 ribProvides strong natural stretch and is often used for neck and cuff trims, but rarely for full garments. Often a small amount of elastane is part of the fibre blend to further enhance the stretch properties.

Woven fabricsTwo yarns, the warp and the weft, are interlaced, running in 90 degree angles to each other. Different weaving patterns lead to different fabric characteristics.

OxfordVery popular shirt fabric with characteristic basketweave appearance. The combination of elegant appearance and excellent durability make oxford fabrics a good choice for shirts used for team uniforms.
