Woolf’s Style
Prediction: You might initially dislike this book.
Second prediction: You will later realize you were wrong. Woolf is a revolution.
She didn’t care about writing something like what had been written over the last 100 years
Wanted to include what those novels had left out
Aiming at something NEW…and she achieved it

Cubism is the most influential visual art style of the early
twentieth century. It was created by Pablo Picasso (Spanish,
1881–1973) and Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963) in
Paris between 1907 and 1914.
![Page 14: Virginia Woolf (née Stephen) 25 January 1882 28 March 1941€¦ · Woolf divides “Kew Gardens” into seven sections. -As I check your critical read, locate and label all seven](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052022/6036d7b2b5d9911ce333312d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Discuss: How does Cubism reflect Woolf’s
narrative style using various stream-of-
consciousness perspectives?
Cubist painters rejected the inherited
concept that art should copy nature, or that
they should adopt the traditional techniques
of perspective, modeling, and foreshortening.
◦ They wanted instead to emphasize the two-
dimensionality of the canvas, so they reduced and
fractured objects into geometric forms, and then
realigned these within a shallow, relief-like space.
◦ They also used multiple or contrasting vantage
points.

Interior monologue: “Stream of
consciousness”
◦Term comes from William James,
philosopher and psychologist
James argued that consciousness
is not a chain of ideas, but a river
or stream, where components are
seamlessly merged

Stream-of-consciousness
Best known example: Final 50 pages of James Joyce’s Ulysses…unpunctuated, because we don’t think in sentences
Woolf said that s-o-c enabled her to:
◦ show what our interior life is really like and
◦ give the reader a deeper intimacy with her characters

The Bloomsbury Group“In short, they were determined to reinvent society, at least within their own
circle.”
The “Bloomsberries,” as they were called, were mostly privileged and well-educated members of the upper middle class.
They were the only group to support gay rights, women in the arts, pacifism, open marriages, uninhibited sexuality and other unconventional ideas.
◦ Having grown up in Victorian households, the Bloomsbury Group openly rejected the old Victorian ideals from their childhoods and adopted more liberal and progressive attitudes.
◦ Seeing Victorian society as prudish and narrow-minded, they chose to live freely and unrestricted.

Victorian England
The Victorian period formally begins in
1837 (the year Victoria became Queen)
and ends in 1901 (the year of her death).
◦ 1830 is usually considered the end of the
Romantic period in Britain, and thus makes a
convenient starting date for Victorianism.
◦ Similarly, since Queen Victoria’s death
occurred so soon in the beginning of a new
century, the end of the previous century
provides a useful closing date for the period.
![Page 37: Virginia Woolf (née Stephen) 25 January 1882 28 March 1941€¦ · Woolf divides “Kew Gardens” into seven sections. -As I check your critical read, locate and label all seven](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022052022/6036d7b2b5d9911ce333312d/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
Victorian England: Stuffy & Rigid?
The common perception of the period is the Victorians are “prudish, hypocritical, stuffy, [and] narrow-minded”
The middle-class, which at the time was increasing both in number and power.
◦ Many members of this middle-class aspired to join the ranks of the nobles, and felt that acting “properly,” according to the conventions and values of the time, was an important step in that direction.
Another important aspect of this period is the large-scale expansion of British imperial power, despite the loss of the valuable American colonies.

Modernists argued that the novel needed to be more than popular entertainment
Modernists Question:
How much tolerance do humans have for truth?Who faces reality and who avoids it?
How are men and women alike and different?
What is the role of the artist in society?
Is marriage essential for a full life?
How do we balance our need for solitude with our need for society?
How does nature influence us?

To the Lighthouse (1927)
TTL is set on two days ten years apart. The plot centers on the Ramsay family’s anticipation of and reflection upon a visit to a lighthouse and the connected familial tensions.
One of the primary themes of the novel is the struggle in the creative process that beset painter Lily Briscoe while she struggles to paint in the midst of the family drama.
The novel is also ◦ A meditation upon the lives of a nation’s inhabitants in the
midst of war, and of the people left behind.
◦ An exploration of the passage of time, and how women are forced by society to allow men to take emotional strength from them.
