From the Editor

Athletic competition at Virginia State University dates nearly to the day the school opened its doorsover 125 years ago. When the first students arrived in 1883, one brought with him a football and thegames were on.

In 1884, the athletic program was unofficially launched with the formation of football and baseballteams. In 1903, two faculty members, William A. Rogers and James T. Phillips, accepted the additionalresponsibilities of coaching VSU’s first sports teams and the VSU Athletic Program was officially born.

Over time, the program grew. Track and tennis were added in 1920, and basketball was added in 1924.In 1923, VSU joined with other African-American institutions to form the Colored IntercollegiateAthletic Association (now the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association or CIAA).

Women’s athletics began in 1931, although the formation of women’s intercollegiate athleticswouldn’t officially be recognized at VSU until the 1970s. In 1931, Lucille “Teacha” Frazier formedwomen’s teams that competed in field hockey, soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, volleyball, archeryand hiking. Trophies were awarded in each sport to the respective All-Stars at the end of the season.

Through the early years of the athletic program, VSU’steams were known as the “Hilltoppers,” because of thecampus location on the tallest hill in Ettrick. During the1920s, however, the VSU sports teams adopted the now-familiar “Trojan” moniker.

From 1923 through the 1950s, the Trojans owned theCIAA, and the period became known as “The Golden Ageof Trojan Athletics.” Coaches such as Harry “Big Jeff”Jefferson and Tom Verrell captured many championshipsin football, baseball, basketball and track.

VSU produced such athletic luminaries as John Borican, once called “The Worlds Best All-Around Track Athlete,”and Wilmer Fields, who became a star with the Homestead Grays of the Negro Baseball League. Thisyear, the CIAA honored Borican and former Trojan athlete and long-time booster Jona McKee withinduction into the conference Hall of Fame.

Women’s athletics formally returned to VSU in 1977, with the formation of volleyball and basketballprograms. VSU almost immediately became well-known for producing top-notch female student-athletes such as basketball start (and current U.S. Army Brigadier General) Sheila Baxter. Now, VSUboasts one of the CIAA’s premier women’s programs, winning this year’s tennis championship andfinishing as runner-up in both softball and track.

Another bright spot in Trojan athletics came in the form of the VSU cheerleaders, known as the Woo-Woos. Under the guidance of Dr. Paulette Johnson, the cheerleaders have gained national fame as theclass of the CIAA cheer squads.

Now, with recent upgrades in athletics facilities, which in the past five years have included opening anon-campus softball field, a new tennis complex, a new playing floor in Daniel Gymnasium, a newfootball practice field and extensive renovation of Rogers Stadium, VSU’s Trojans are poised foranother Golden Era of athletic excellence.

The State Council of HigherEducation for Virginia recentlyapproved Virginia State University’s(VSU) request to launch theCommonwealth of Virginia’s firstPh.D. program in Health Psychology. The program is slated to begin in Fall 2008 and will be led by Dr. OliverW. Hill, Jr., chair of VSU’s psychologydepartment.

The venture marks the first-everPh.D. program at VSU, although theuniversity has offered the Ed.D. ineducational administration andsupervision since 2002. VSUcurrently has a Master of ScienceDegree in Psychology.

“Health psychology is the fastestgrowing area in psychology and noone else seems to be offering thistype of doctoral program,” Dr. Hillsaid.

The Ph.D. program will consist of aclinical track that will propelstudents toward state licensure anda behavioral community healthsciences research track. Students inthe program will work closely withThe Center for Preventive HealthResearch on Children andAdolescents (CPHR).

In the two-track Ph.D. program, doctoral students will focus onresearching the interaction betweenphysical and psychological healthand will closely examine healthdisparities in minority communities.“Doctoral students will attempt toidentify the source of thosedisparities and come up withinterventions to help solve those

problems,” Dr. Hill said.“We want tohelp produce practitioners andprepare them to have a positiveimpact in this field.”

The university plans to enroll eightstudents in its first class and triplethe class size over the next severalyears. VSU will partner withcommunity agencies andorganizations such as the City ofPetersburg, the PetersburgDepartment of Social Services,Southside Community Hospital andCentral State Hospital to providedoctoral students with hands-onexperience. “We are very excited,”Dr. Hill said.“This is going to havesuch a positive impact on theuniversity community.”

VSU is hoping to draw researchfunding for its inaugural Ph.D.program from the National Institutesof Health (NIH) and the NationalScience Foundation (NSF). The NIHrecently awarded VSU a $4 millionbiomedical research grant tosupport an initiative aimed toreduce health disparities. The NSF

awarded VSU a three-year, $1 milliongrant aimed at increasing minoritiesin the sciences.

“This new Ph.D. program representsVirginia State University’s mission tointegrate the highest level ofinstruction, research and publicservice in an effort to positivelyimpact our local, national and evenglobal community,” said VSUPresident Eddie N. Moore, Jr.“We are extremely eager to bring newdoctoral students aboard andcontinue our school’s immenseaccomplishments.”

The Ph.D program is part of VSU’s20/20 Vision Plan, a set of long-rangegoals aimed at placing VSU onto thelist of top tier universitiesnationwide. Last year, U.S. News &World Report named VSU the toppublic, master’s level HBCU(Historically Black Colleges andUniversities) in the country. This pastyear, VSU awarded doctorates ineducation to the university’s firstdoctoral students and graduated theuniversity’s first nursing students.

VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Award winning actor and activist Danny Glover recentlyvisited VSU to discuss his involvement with the AlgebraProject, a national mathematics literacy effort aimed athelping low-income and minority students achievenecessary mathematical skills.

The Algebra Project at VSU began as a part of a $1 milliongrant from the National Science Foundation (NSF,)Virginia State University created the Trojan— Science,Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program (VSUT-STEM), to increase the number of minorities in thesedisciplines.

Founded in the early 80s by Dr. Robert Moses, the AlgebraProject has developed a system that has been extremelyeffective in teaching mathematics principles andreasoning to low-performing and low-income African-American students. The program also includes teachertraining, curriculum development and communityinvolvement activities to schools seeking to achieve asystemic change in mathematics education. The AlgebraProject reaches approximately 10,000 students and 300teachers per year in 28 local sites across 10 states.

At VSU, Glover spoke about his desire to help the city ofPetersburg’s students gain academic success andmathematics education reform. In one of his many visitsto this area, he compared the Petersburg Public Schoolssystem’s resources with that of areas along the gulfaffected by hurricane Katrina in 2005, and noted thatboth were in need of new system of support.

He stressed that it was time for a communal outreach ofeducators, including parents, teachers, schooladministrators and law makers who understand theimportance of mathematics education in providing long-

term economic success and stability. He agreed thatprograms like the Algebra Project and historically blackuniversities, like VSU, are necessary to spark academicrenewal in teachers, curricula and, most importantly, students.

Recently, VSU T-STEM implemented a focused program to directly assess and address the impact of a VSU/Petersburg community coalition on the mathematicsperformance of minority students. The project is the firststep in a long-term partnership among VSU, the AlgebraProject and the Petersburg School system. The project will create a “K through college” model of intervention, ultimately increasing African-American and minorityperformance and participation in mathematics.

In conjunction with VSU, the Algebra Project has startedan intervention with Petersburg, funded by the localCameron Foundation, which will begin with middleschool grades, and move through high school, and downinto elementary schools. These interventions will besupplemented through teacher and community leadertraining and mathematics and science bridge programsfor students that will be held at VSU during the summers.

Glover pledged to remain involved with the AlgebraProject at VSU and congratulated professors, administrators, students and staff for their dedication tothe Petersburg community and its students.

Cherry and Poarch were the onlyundergraduates to present their workat the conference. And as a result, thestudents now have new internationalsavvy on the latest science andtechnology themes and researchprojects.

Gymama Slaughter, director of VSU’sCenter for Biosystems andEngineering who initiated theprogram last year, led her students toAsia to expose them to international

research and to help boost thepresence of under-representedstudents – mainly young women andminorities – in the rapidly changingfield of science and technology.

In addition to Cherry and Poarch,Slaughter works with four otherundergraduate research associates:Jessica Brigance, Rochelle Harris,Nadine Jerome and Dwayne Waddey.Besides researching and developingtechnologies of integrated circuits,

the team conducts in-vitro testing of enzyme and organism basedbiosensors.

The CBE is a research center in VSU’sDepartment of Engineering &Technology which aims to nurturestudents’ interest and performance in the area of biosensors.

The intended outcome: that students’work will have far-reaching exposureand impact around the world.

CommencementActor and activist Edward JamesOlmos, fists pumping and voice raisingto the high rafters of the RichmondColiseum, invited those attendingVSU’s Spring Commencement to lookdown upon those assembled on thefloor of the building and “look at thefuture. Look at the pride andcommitment they’ve given all of us!”

Equal parts political stump speech andinspiration, Olmos, VSU’s first HispanicCommencement speaker, told the newgraduates they are part of a politicalchange in the air.“The responsibilityyou carry is making sure everyone youknow votes,” he said.“Do not gouncounted.”

Olmos closed with a poem by MichaelJosephson “What Will Matter.” Thepoet wrote “how will the value of your

days be measured? Not by what youbought, but by what you built. Not bywhat you learned but what youtaught. Not by how many you know, but how many will feel a loss whenyou’re gone.”

“Choose to live a life that matters,”Olmosurged the newly-minted graduates.

In addition to conferring almost 600degrees, including the school’s firstMaster’s of Criminal Justice, VSUhonored several faculty members andalumni. ALUMNI NOTES

58

When Calvin R. Swinson called upon the VirginiaState University

classmates who graduatedwith him in 1958, and they vividlyremembered him although they hadn’ttalked in 50 years – he was overjoyed.

His popularity at VSU had withstoodfive decades, and Swinson, now 72, washoping that same popularity of being aTrojan football player; a Kappa AlphaPsi Fraternity, Inc. brother; and anacademic scholar, would translate intomajor donations for the university.

Swinson, CPA, who majored inaccounting at VSU, served as leadcoordinator of the class of 1958 ReunionCommittee. The group contacted peersacross the country and urged them tocontribute to the class’ endowment.

“Hearing them respond to me as if itwere only yesterday they had seen mewas wonderful,” says Swinson, who ismarried to Macey Prince Swinson andhas a stepson and a step grandson.“Just hearing several of them talk abouthow I motivated them was great. Therewere times when I’d call people to talkfor only a few minutes and it ended uplasting over an hour. It’s all aboutpersonal relationships.”

With Swinson’s leadership, thepersistence of his eight-memberreunion committee that met forweekly updates every Wednesdaysince September, and the generosityof about 70 alumni of the class of‘58, this year’s Golden Anniversaryclass reached the university’s goalof $50,000 in less than one year.

In fact, the class exceeded its goal, presenting the university with acheck for $60,255 during AlumniWeekend in May. It’s a feat that has seta precedent for other classes.

“We did it in nine months,” Swinsonproudly says.“Most classes take years to

raise that much. This shows a lot ofhard work and commitment on thepart of the committee. It was a greatcooperative effort.”

Swinson, often traveling between hishome in San Francisco and another inBoise, Idaho, didn’t mind the hoursspent heading up committee meetingsand connecting with former friends overthe telephone. It was, after all, an effortto raise money for his alma mater.

“This winter has been very long andgloomy in Boise. So the days when itwas gloomy outside, I was insideworking on the class reunion. Thatreally kept me going,” Swinson says.“Ithas been one of the most pleasurableexperiences in life, actually a dream job.”

And that says a lot, coming from alicensed certified public accountantwho was one of the first AfricanAmericans to work for a majoraccounting firm and several Fortune500 companies before going intoprivate practice in the ‘70s.

Before becoming a successfulaccountant, Swinson served as alieutenant in the U.S. Army FinanceCorps and received his master’s degreein business administration from NewYork University’s Stern School ofBusiness.

Under his leadership, the committeegot over half of the class to donate, with 48 members donating at least$1,000. Swinson says several peoplewho were not in the class of ‘58 also

contributed. Everyone contributing atleast $1,000 will have a brick with his orher name inscribed on it and placedaround a bench donated by the class of’58. The class is still working on reelingin more donations, Swinson says.

Swinson says a commitment todeveloping future leaders was thedriving force behind the contributions.

“Part of earning big money is giving,”Swinson says.“Some of us don’t have a history of giving, but we have tochange that mentality, because if wedon’t give, no one wins. We have to takea leadership position and that’s what Itried to do with this class reunion.”

In addition to Swinson, the class of ‘58Reunion Committee included: Aurelia E. Craighead, Joyce C. Crump, Phyllis J.Glasker, Fred D. Green, Edith P. Harris,Edna C.Thompson and Shirley T. McCoy.

From sending out emails and holdingweekly telephone conference calls, committee members, who live on theEast and West coasts and the Midwest, used today’s technology to reunite with classmates.

“I think that’s one of the mostsignificant things about this process,”Swinson says.“We did it totally the hi-tech way. We never met in person once

throughout the process.”

However, despite the fact thattechnology has evolved sinceSwinson and his classmatesstudied at VSU, the class of ‘58 willalways appreciate its old-schoolTrojan experience, he says.

“What brought us back together is the strong bond we developedover 50 years ago. It’s a sense ofhistory that could go overlooked,

but we choose to not let that happen,”Swinson says.“We stand committed tocontinuing the sense of giving andhistory at Virginia State.”

With Undaunted Leadership,VSU Class of ’58 Sets Record

ALUMNI NEWS

At the outset of Col. William Bailey’s career as a pilot inthe Army’s aviation unit in the early 60s, not manyAfrican-Americans wereflying in the military, letalone for commercialairlines.

Despite an environmentsteeped in racism and Jim Crow, Bailey wasdetermined to fly.

Bailey’s passion waskindled after one of hisolder brothers purchaseda plane. Resolved to blaze apath few blacks had trod, heserved a stint as a pilot in theU.S. Army and latertransitioned his aviationskills into a civil career withContinental Airlines. Heretired as a Boeing 747Captain.

Although he’d heard of theTuskegee Airmen –– African-American pilots who flewwith distinction duringWorld War II –– Bailey, aVirginia State Universityalumnus and member of theAlpha Phi Chapter of KappaAlpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.,navigated his own waythrough the maze of whatwas then a discriminatoryindustry.

He is now one of several mentors in VSU’s new Alpha PhiChapter Alumni of Kappa Alpha Psi Mentoring Programwho are reaching out to pull up younger Kappa brothersso they won’t have to climb the ladder of success alone.

The program, in its first year, pairs Kappa alumni invarious professions with undergraduate Kappa men atVSU to create both professional and personal bonds

between the older and younger generations in hopes ofopening doors for minority college students. Studiesshow that a positive mentoring relationship has amultifaceted impact on the lives of younger people.

The Kappa mentoring program grew out of a Fridaynight brainstorming session of Kappa alumni duringVSU’s 2007 Homecoming. The men, all successful inrespective careers, debated how they could give back totheir alma mater, says Dr. Harold T. Amaker, a VSU Kappaalumnus who is leading the mentoring program.

Their conclusion: become mentors to their young

fraternity brothers who may not be privy to the realitiesof “the real world.”

“There are things going on that they would have no clueabout,” says Amaker, director of community relations atBMW, who has worked for over 40 years in strategicplanning, program design and management and trainingdevelopment within the luxury automotive industry.

Before joining BMW, Amaker spent nearly 19 years as asales consultant with Mercedes-Benz, North America.“We’re trying to put a stop to that and help ourunderage brothers get through that maze of humanity.”

Amaker, who serves as dean of the Amaker SalesInstitute, says that while most large companies placeperceived future leaders on a “fast track” to the top andpair them with powerful mentors, a disparity existsbetween the tracks taken by whites and blacks.

Citing a study by researcher David A. Thomas, Amakersays the fast track for selected white employees beginsearly, whereas it may take years for minorities to provethemselves worthy.

“We see so many times, that when kids in other schoolsget to companies, they hit the ground running,” he says.“There’s somebody in those companies that take aspecial interest in them and, of course, they tend to getthe better jobs because they had a mentor. We want togive our brothers the same opportunity.”

The goal of the mentoring program, Amaker says, is tohelp younger Kappa brothers focus on building skillsand developing careers and self-awareness that willpromote growth beyond perceived limitations.“This is awork that I want to see fulfilled by all Kappas,” he says.

Building a network of professional support for youngerstudents is crucial to the mentoring process, Amakersays. It also keeps minorities who ultimately succeedfrom giving up too soon.

Amaker says the mentoring program will providesupport in five ways: open doors to challengingassignments to build competence; build trust betweenthe mentor and protégé that can, in turn, enhance self-confidence; offer quality advice to keep the protégé onthe right track; sponsor the protégé for importantcareer opportunities; and support the protégé when heis faced with challenges based on race, gender orethnicity.

Bailey has already developed a plan for his protégé:network, network, and more networking. That includesconnecting his protégé, Isreal Dyson, a rising senior inVSU’s ROTC program, with fellow members of The

Organization of Black Airline Pilots. The program offersscholarships and programs for young, aspiring aviators.

Dyson, whose goal is to become an aviation officer, saysBailey is keeping him on track by connecting him withmilitary and commercial pilots and giving him insightinto the field. He says he hopes other students takeadvantage of the program.

“There are many things today that can lead youngerpeople astray,” Dyson says.“It’s great to have someonethere that can encourage you and teach you from theirexperiences.”

Bailey is introducing his Dyson to pilots who flydomestic and international routes to provide a diverselook into the industry. His goal is to create a network ofsupport to guide his protégé along a successful careerpath.

“We want to give back to VSU students,” Bailey says.“It was initially tough for us to get into the aviationindustry. It still is, but back in the early ‘60s it was very, very tough. It’s an industry that’s lucrative and thebenefits are massive. I never want a child to look up inthe sky, see an airplane and think they can never getthere.”

The Alpha Phi Chapter Alumni is planning a fundraisingdinner at VSU on Oct. 24 honoring VSU alumni andKappa brothers Dr. Billy Taylor, a renowned internationaljazz musician; and the late Reginald F. Lewis, one of thecountry’s most successful business leaders.

Money from the event will go toward the Kappa AlphaPsi Endowed Scholarship and a Kappa mentoringinternship program.

The Virginia StateUniversity Museum andCultural Center (VSU-MACC)The past few years have yieldedunparalleled growth at Virginia State. We are filled with pride over theremarkable U.S. News & World Reportrankings, the new and renovatedfacilities sprouting throughout thecampus and new academic programsthat are being launched.

Yet another exciting project looms justover the horizon. VSU is preparing toopen its first museum of fine arts, culture and history. Tentatively slatedto be called the Virginia StateUniversity Museum and CulturalCenter (VSU-MACC), this pre-eminentmuseum will be an integral part of alarger undertaking for the city ofPetersburg – the creation of a regionalarts/cultural hub of national caliber.

VSU is partnering with the PetersburgArea Art League (PAAL). PAAL owns alarge historic building in Old Towne, and has agreed to share part of thisfacility with VSU, to provide a home forthe University’s new museum. In turn,VSU is helping PAAL raise the fundsneeded to renovate its building. Thisunique collaboration is a wonderfulexample of public/private partnership. This collaboration has been dubbed“Art in Petersburg: A Dual Initiative forPAAL and VSU.”

None of this would be possiblewithout generous support from thePetersburg-based CameronFoundation. The Cameron Foundationdemonstrated confidence in theproject by approving a $1.5 milliongrant toward the PAAL/VSU regionalarts center. The entire cost for theconstruction and rehabilitation for thebuilding is projected to beapproximately $2.3 million. Withprograms for both VSU students andthe public, the two-year cost for theproject is nearly $3 million. Cameron

has made half of the grant, $750,000 achallenge/matching grant, in order toentice other funding sources to sharein the vision. Recently, the MaryMorton Parsons Foundation committed$150,000 toward the renovation ofPAAL’s building.

VSU-MACC is scheduled to open inJanuary, 2009 with a world-classtraveling exhibit – “The Art of Africa” –a collection of Warren Robbins, directoremeritus of the Smithsonian Institution’sNational Museum of African Art. This isa very prestigious exhibit, offered to ahandful of HBCUs nationwide.

Other traveling exhibits are in store.Highlights of museum programs thatare being planned for the first yearinclude: 1) permanent and loanedcollections on exhibit that representthe spectrum of African/AfricanAmerican art; 2) a master series withexhibits and lectures from nationallyrecognized African American artists; 3)a regional conference to bring artistsand the art business industry to theregion; 4) a docent program that willteach local volunteers to provide toursto museum visitors; 5) outreach andhands-on education for area schoolchildren; 6) a community muralproject, n collaboration with PAAL.

The heart of VSU-MACC is to help theSchool of Liberal Arts and Educationbroaden the horizons of its studentsby expanding educationalopportunities. The museum will allowthe University to create internshipsand scholarly research opportunities;diversify art history courses; provideexhibit space for the work of students, faculty and distinguished alumni; anddraw nationally-respected artists tolecture and conduct hands-ondemonstrations in their craft.

To complete VSU’s dream of a museumthat carries the highest standard ofexcellence, more funds must be raised. If you are interested in contributing tothis wonderful effort, please contact JoyHaliburton, Assistant Vice President forDevelopment, at (804) 524-6986.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS

Many people receive life insurancefrom their employers as a fringebenefit. But, for insurance in excess of$50,000, tax law requires employeesto pay income tax and FICA on thecost of that coverage.

However, when the employee namesVirginia State University as the solebeneficiary of any portion of thepolicy, there is no income tax due onthe cost for that coverage. For thosewho do not need the excessprotection, this is an excellent gift-planning option. This plansimultaneously lowers the employee’sincome tax and employer’s incometax with no out-of-pocket expense for the donor.

How much is saved? Your potentialincome tax savings are based on atable of uniform premium rates andyour income bracket. For example, consider a 62-year-old employee –with $125,000 of coverage providedby the employer – who directs$75,000 or more of the death benefitto Virginia State University. Thisemployee/donor will no longer payincome and FICA tax on $1,052 ofextra annual income.

Life insurance benefits are easy tocontribute. All that is required is thatyou indicate the change of beneficiary

on a form available from youremployee benefits or personneldepartment. You will also want tocontact your payroll office so it candeduct the cost of the excess coverageinsurance gift from your IRS Form W-2at the end of the year.

Other forms of life insurance gifts canalso benefit Virginia State Universitywhile reducing your income taxliability. You may considercontributing a paid-up policy, forwhich you can receive a charitablededuction for an amount roughlyequal to the cash value of the policy.Or you may contribute a policy eventhough you are still making premiumpayments. In many cases you couldthen take a charitable deduction foryour premium payments.

Donors are advised to consult theirlegal and financial advisors beforeclaiming an income tax deduction.

For more information, provided inconfidence and without obligation, contact our Major and Planned GiftsOfficer, Keyia Matthews ’00 at (804)524-5315 or by [email protected]. While you willstill need to meet with yourprofessional advisor for expertcounsel, an advance meeting or twowith Keyia will prove useful and could

save costs by helping you make thebest use of your professional advisor’stime. Her services are available to youwithout any obligation whatsoever.

We hope you’ll be able to join us for aFREE ESTATE PLANNING SEMINARON THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2008.Contact Keyia Matthews for moreinformation.

Caring for the disposition of yourassets is too important to delay. It’simportant for you, for your lovedones and for your dear Alma Mater.
