    ReflectionsBy Mary Friedel-Hunt

March 27 is a day forever etched in my heart andmind. On this day two years ago, the most importantperson in my life crossed deaths threshold, leaving mein a shock that to this day takes my breath away. Manydays were spent in a fog. It seems a century since Ilooked into my husbands blue eyes, held his stronghand or heard his warm voice telling me how much heloves me. In this time I have wept buckets of tears;been ambushed daily by unexpecteds that rip open thedelicate membrane that protects my soul a bit. I haveread dozens of grief-related books and hundreds of arti-cles; met many new friends, most of whom have beendrawn into a club we never wanted to join the clubof loss and grief. I could write volumes about death andloss and grief.

In June, I will attend a four-day conference on thesubject to educate myself more fully as I work withgrieving clients. In spite of losing both parents, good

friends and even pets, and in spite of helping grievingpeople for almost 40 years in my office, this loss isshocking. I could not have predicted the depth of mysorrow as prepared as I thought I was. One is neverprepared.

The friends I have met who are walking their ownpaths of grief confirm and support me as I, in turn, dothe same for them. I hear them express the same feel-ings I have assuring me I am not as crazy as I feel. Ichose, when Bill died, to walk through the heart of thispain. I refused to walk around it, bury it, deny it or dowhat our society wishes all of us in this club would do,i.e., move on. Grief is not something we recover from ormove on from. It is not a sickness. Instead we learn to

The Fit For Life program has opened up my eyesand showed me that I really can make a difference inmy life. YES! I can actually lose weight, have fun andstill live a normal life. I do work hard and eat in a differ-ent way than I used to, but to tell you the truth, Id muchrather be able to run a flight of stairs without losing mybreath than eat a whole bag of chips in one sitting. Ihave found a new way to live my life and still keep alife. Working out is now a part of my daily life and Iactually get upset when I miss a good, hard workoutday! This journey has brought me to a new place in life, new friends, and a new attitude for health. Thank youso much to every one of the people who I work outwith and to the amazing trainers. Nutrition Tip of the WeekIt is reported that one of every two Americans born today will be diag-

nosed with cancer. With only about 5% being genetic, that means theresa lot we can do to prevent it. Exercise has been shown in studies to sup-press cancer gene activity in response to vigorous physical activity.Specifically, 184 genes were expressed differently in response to exer-cise in men. When healthy but inactive men and women exercise for amatter of minutes, it produces a rather immediate change to their DNA.Researchers found that an increase of 1.2 metabolic units of exercisewas related to decrease risk of cancer death. Its also well known thatrunners get less occurrence of cancer. Exercise increases oxygenation inthe blood and cancer cannot live in an oxygen-rich, alkaline environment.

Fitness Tip of the WeekOne thing competition brings to light is exactly how much

more we can bring to our workouts than we routinely do. Onany given day, a person may choose a running path with theleast amount of hills. However, if that same person is involvedin a race that includes hills, the runner would tackle those hillswith a vengeance in an attempt to win the race. What the run-ners learn through competition is how much more they haveinside them to give.

Ask yourself during a workout, Is this all I got? and

before you allow your mind to make up a million excuses, for-mulate a self-competition of sorts and give it a lot more.Julia John

This weeks workout focused on competition competition against oneself and competition againstone another. The participants first challenge involvedbeating their own time from previous runs. The secondchallenge was about beating the time of other partici-pants.

It really got me to try harder. At first I was aheadof the game. Later, as people started catching up, it gotme to put more into the workout to stay ahead, saidShayne Wilfer, a participant. It would seem that trainersMatt and Kevin succeeded in their goal to motivate!

Weight FluctuationsNormal daily weight fluctuation is between 3 and 5 pounds. When on a weight-

loss journey, this can be very frustrating and confusing. Experts agree to step awayfrom the scale on a daily basis. Rather, weigh yourself once a week. On a dailybasis, concentrate on how you feel, how your clothes are fitting and put a mentalemphasis on your strengths and what makes you feel good about yourself. A weigh-in that shows very little weight loss can feel devastating, but look at the whole pic-ture. If you lost 6 pounds the week before and none for the current week, considerthe 3-pound-per-week average and keep going. Dont look back. Never give up. Ifthat sounds familiar, you must be on the Fit For Life team!

    RESOLUTION OF OCTOBER 4, 2011

Resolution Placing Advisory Referendum Question on April Ballot

The Town of Three Lakes Board of Supervisors, in legal session assembled, resolved that the electors of the Town of Three Lakes would be asked in anadvisory referendum during the April 2012 election to determine if the job ofTown Treasurer, currently an elected office, should become a positionappointed by the Town Board.

The Town Clerk was also directed to cause a copy of the Notice of Referen-dum to be published in the towns official newspaper of record as requiredby law.

The question will appear on the ballot as follows:

Shall the person holding the office of Town Treasurer in the Town of ThreeLakes be appointed by the Town Board? Yes or No

    Explanation

This is an advisory referendum. A yes vote indicates that you support anamendment to the Code of the Town of Three Lakes to change the job ofTown Treasurer from being an elected office to a position appointed by theTown Board. A no vote indicates that you do not support such an amend-ment. Your vote on this question will directly affect whether an amendmentto Town Code is enacted.

The purpose of the question is to determine whether to give the Town Boardof Supervisors the ability to advertise for and interview highly skilled andqualified candidates for the job of Town Treasurer, which over the past twodecades has evolved into a very demanding and complex position. Anappointed Town Treasurer would be given a two-year contract. Renewal ofthe contract would be subject to performance evaluation by the Town Board. The earliest than an appointed Treasurer could be installed is April of 2013,when the term of office of the current elected Town Treasurer will expire. Theunderlying reason for appointing the position is to ensure the most qualifiedcandidate is installed in the job, whereas in the current elected capacity, anyone who is an elector in the town can run for the office, whether or notthey possess the mandatory accounting, bookkeeping and computer skills.
