Chairman’s Note
My Dear Students,
Among the 84 lakh species of living beings, human being stands out unique, special and extraordinary, owing to his reasoning, logical thinking, analytical, comprehension skills and more than anything, his capacity to imagine!
Our vision is limited to a narrow bandwidth, our audibility is limited to a small bandwidth and capacities of our senses are greatly limited. Despite all these limitations, human being is able to climb the top of the evolution ladder. All these are possible because of his skills and intelligence.
There is a budding scientist in every student, who is highly inquisitive and curious about various things happening around him. This curiosity should move us to the next stage of experimentation, observation, analysis and comprehension.
I am sure that ‘Vagdevi Vilas Vignan Patrika’ will kindle the scientific spirit in every student and help to transform into a budding scientist.
I congratulate and thank all those who have contributed to this news bulletin becoming a reality.

This time around the tiny tots of pre-primary got a chance to learn about the science
behind some of the old magic tricks! No, this was not a class on magic tricks, but on
magnets. The little ones were quick to identify that the magically spinning stick was not a
stick, but a magnet. They learnt that magnets do not magically stick to any surface. Instead,
magnets are attracted to metallic surfaces that would be made from iron.
They were thrilled to see the different types of magnets, especially the horse shoe
magnet. They enthusiastically sorted materials into magnetic and non-magnetic using a bar
magnet. In the end, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that magnets never fail to amuse both the
young and the old alike !

Elizabeth Blackwell ( February 3 )
Elizabeth Blackwell was a British-born physician, notable as the first
woman to receive a medical degree in the United States, as well as the
first woman on the UK Medical Register. She was the first woman to
graduate from medical school, a pioneer in promoting the education of
women in medicine in the United States, and a social and moral
reformer in both the United States and in the United Kingdom. Blackwell in 1895, published
her autobiography, Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women.
Honours-Since 1949, the American Medical Women's Association has been awarding the
Elizabeth Blackwell Medal annually to a woman physician. Hobart and William Smith
Colleges award an annual Elizabeth Blackwell Award to women who have demonstrated
"outstanding service to humankind". In 2013 the University of Bristol launched the
Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research.
Ludwig Prandtl ( February 4 )
Ludwig Prandtl was a German engineer. He was a pioneer in
the development of rigorous systematic mathematical analyses which
he used for underlying the science of aerodynamics. His analyses and
observation helped to form the basis of applied science of aeronautical
engineering. In 1920s he developed mathematical basis for the basic
principles of subsonic aerodynamics in particular. His studies identified
the boundary layer, thin-airfoils, and lifting-line theories. The Prandtl
number was named after him. His work in fluid dynamics is still used today in many areas of
aerodynamics and chemical engineering.
Honours-The crater Prandtl on the far side of the Moon is named in his honour. The Ludwig-
Prandtl-Ring is awarded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt in his honour for
outstanding contribution in the field of aerospace engineering. NASA has named two
research and exploration aircraft after Prandtl, the PRANDTL-D and the PRANDTL-M.

“A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life”
- Charles Darwin
_Swami Vivekananda
Charles Darwin ( February 12 ) Charles Robert Darwin, was an English naturalist and geologist, best
known for his contributions to evolutionary theory. He established that
all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors.
In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace he introduced his
scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a
process that he called natural selection, in which the struggle for
existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in
selective breeding.
Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the
Origin of Species, overcoming scientific rejection of earlier concepts of transmutation of
species. By the 1870s, the scientific community and much of the general public had accepted
evolution as a fact.
Honours- Darwin was regarded as a great scientist who had revolutionised ideas. He was
honoured in June 1909 by more than 400 officials and scientists from across the world who
met in Cambridge to commemorate his centenary and the fiftieth anniversary of On the Origin
of Species. During this period, which has been called "the eclipse of Darwinism".
Heinrich Hertz ( February 22 )
Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was a German physicist who first conclusively
proved the existence of electromagnetic waves theorized by James
Clerk Maxwell's. Hertz proved the theory by engineering instruments to
transmit and receive radio pulses using experimental procedures that
ruled out all other known wireless phenomena. The SI unit hertz (Hz)
was established in his honor by the International Electrotechnical
Commission in 1930 for frequency. In 1960, officially replacing the
previous name, "cycles per second" (cps).
Honours - In 1928 the Heinrich-Hertz Institute for Oscillation Research was founded in
Berlin. In 1969 (East Germany), a Heinrich Hertz memorial medal was cast. The IEEE
Heinrich Hertz Medal, established in 1987, is "for outstanding achievements in Hertzian
waves presented annually to an individual for achievements which are theoretical or
experimental in nature". A crater that lies on the far side of the Moon, just behind the eastern
limb, is named in his honor. The Heinrich-Hertz-Turm radio telecommunication tower in
Hamburg is named after the city's famous son.

There is no doubt that human civilization has had a negative impact on biodiversity, particularly
since the industrial revolution. Overfishing, hunting, destructions of habitats through agriculture
and urban sprawl, use of pesticides and herbicides and the release of toxic compounds into the
environment have all taken toll, particularly on vertebrates.
The world conservation union (IUCN; Gland, Switzerland) now includes more than 16,000 entries
in its Red List of Threatened species: 5,624 vertebrates, 2,101 invertebrates and 8,390 plants
(IUCN, 2006). The number of documented extinctions since 1500 AD is now 784 species and the
IUCN estimates that extinction rates are now 50 to 500 times higher than previous rates calculated
from the fossil record (Baillie et al, 2004)
But it is not all bad news. Many animal and plant species have adapted to the new stress, food
sources, predators and threats in urban and suburban environments, where they thrive in close
proximity to humans. - L. RAJESHWARI,VIII D VVSM.

A small hill station in the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Tiger Reserve (BRTTR) now lends its
name to a new species of bush frog that was discovered there by scientists recently. The
Honnametti bush frog, whose scientific name was Raorchestes honnametti, discovered by a
team from Gubbi Labs and Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, when
they were called to the tiger reserve to look for the rare Sholiga narrow mouthed frog.
The species discovered is a cryptic bush frog – that is, it resembles another species of
Seshachar’s bush frog, (Raorchestes charius). The discovery says that it is very difficult to
differentiate between the Honna metti bush frog and Seshachar’s bush frog .
DNA analysis and the call pattern of the bush frog eventually led to the clinching proof that it
was indeed a hitherto unknown species. The species was named after Honnametti, the hill
station in the tiger reserve where a British couple set up their estate in 1923.

“It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do and then do your best” -W.Edwards Deming
Science is all around us, from the farthest star in the universe to the smallest atom under
our feet, with the help of technology what, why and how questions that challenge science can be
answered. Technology refers to the realistic use of science by humankind for various purposes
which help make life easier and more convenient. We humans are social beings who strive hard
to showcase our individuality and uniqueness. Technology in many ways has helped us become
self-reliant. There is no area or field where technology has not touched our lives.
In the medical field, doctors and nurses need to get information about patients in a quick
and easy way. Technology has been able to provide faster and more accurate results. Being able
to access patients’ files by click of a button is an interesting technology. Moreover, people with
diabetes, are now able to get accurate blood glucose level reading from home. This reduces the
risk of complications with diabetes, such as blindness and peripheral nerve damage.
Communication and information exchange has become so much easier. Thanks to
technological advancement. Skype, Face time, e-mailing and text messaging are all present ways
of communicating with people in society. Without those technologies, one would not be able to
talk to family across the world. We are constantly in touch with the people across the globe
through technology. It has made the world well-connected and has erased the physical and
geographical boundaries, which in turn has created a Global Village.
E-commerce has fully bloomed in both developing and developed countries. E-
Commerce service providers such as flip kart, Amazon and big basket have made access to
everything from groceries to books and gadgets to utensils much easier. With usage of a smart
phone, all one has to do is download the app and order online .
Internet has revolutionized the world, it has given platform to showcase talent and spread
the word far and wide. It has been the platform for learning many new things. In the recent
times, schools are using smart boards as a visual-auditory medium of teaching, helping the
students to be more resourceful and informative and also helping them learn better.
We cannot imagine a life without science and technology, as it would be full of ignorance
and hard manual work, which is time consuming and unproductive. The innovation in science
and technology has indeed made our lives comfortable and has helped us become more self-
reliant.
So, we as a new generation, let us take an oath that we will use technology wisely as a
means to progress and lead a healthy lifestyle. Thus we shall leave behind a better platform for
the coming generations. - ATHREYSA, VIII A VVSM.

“Time is a brisk wind, for each hour it brings something new”
Mars has acid fog which eats away rocks
and is caused by volcanic eruptions on the
red planet, a new study suggests. A
planetary scientist has found how acidic
vapours may have eaten at the rocks in a
100 acres area on Husband Hill in the
Columbia Hills of Gusev Crater on Mars.
The scientist’s research focused on the
‘Watchtower Class’ outcrops on
Cumberland Ridge and the Husband Hill
summit. The special thing about
Watchtower Class is that it’s very
widespread which means that the rocks
record environments that existed on Mars
billions of years ago.
By combining data from previous studies of
the area on Mars. The scientist saw some
intriguing patterns emerge. Spirit examined
Watchtower Class rocks and the chemical
composition of these rocks, as determined
by Spirit’s Alpha Proton X-ray
Spectrometer, is the same, but the rocks
looked different to all of the other
instruments.

To divide by numbers that are powers of 2 (4, 8, 16, and so on), you merely have
to go on halving the dividend.
For example.,
1. 16 is 24 so halving the dividend four times is the same as dividing by 16.
To divide 8192 by 16
Halve once to get 4096
And again to get 2048
And a third time to get 1024
And finally a fourth time to get the answer 512
This technique makes dividing by high powers of 2 easy.
2. To divide 32768 by 128 – which is 27
32768 halved = 16384
16384 halved = 8192
8192 halved = 4096
4096 halved = 2048
2048 halved = 1024
1024 halved = 512
512 halved = 256 – which is the answer.
