It’s a tall order, but there is still time to prepare! We are currently in the Hebrew month of Elul — the last month of the year. It is the month directly preceding Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, the Days of Awe. Therefore, Elul is a time of great spiritual potency, deep reflection, and self-improvement. The word elul, according to our tradition, has two meanings that complement each other and help us to understand this time of year. First, it is similar to the Aramaic root alal, which means to search for, circle, or track. Second, the Talmud tells us that the Hebrew word elul is an acronym for the famous phrase from Song of Songs, “Ani L’dodi V’dodi Li” — “I am Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine.” If we combine these two meanings, Elul is both a time of searching, a time of circling back, and a time of love and closeness. During Elul, we are remembering, as it were, our truest selves, and we are drawing close to God and community. It’s hard to believe that in just a week we will be kicking off the fall holidays with the celebration of Rosh HaShanah, the Jewish New Year. Though this season is often considered to be a time of solemn observance that we should approach with awe and reverence, the

High Holidays are truly festive days as well. (“Loving, Losing, and Living"Continued from page 1) Elul usually comes at a perfect time, the end of August or September, when we are coming out of the warmth of surety of the summer months, and into the impermanence and fragility of the fall season. It is customary to blow the shofar every morning (except on Shabbat) from the first day of Elul until the day before Rosh HaShanah. The blasts are meant to awaken peoples’ spirits and inspire soul searching. Also as part of our self development work, in Elul we begin the difficult process of granting and asking for forgiveness. We do this through a process called heshbon hanefesh, taking an accounting of our souls. Heshbon hanefesh is a process through which we reflect deeply on the past year by looking at ourselves honestly and seeing our true selves — both our accomplishments and our shortcomings. For all too many of us in the TvS community, the sense of fragility and impermanence came early in the summertime. I speak for myself in saying that the losses I experienced this summer led me to think very deeply about the value and meaning I can give to my life, as long as I am blessed with it. So even though the High Holidays come “early” this year, these

preparations come with a sense of relief, even lightness, as I prepare to begin my life anew. Living in spite of loss is not easy. It sometimes can feel like a daunting challenge, but the memory of those we love pushes us to make new meaning of our lives. So this year, let’s come together to strengthen and support each other in this vital, awe-filled, and joyous work. May we all be written and sealed in the Book of Life. L’Shana tova u’metuka, Rabbi Anna

Soup’s on… for our Annual High Holiday Food Drive! The annual High Holiday Food Drive to benefit the recipients of Federation’s Mitzvah Food Project is approaching! Your participation is needed this fall to help the Mitzvah Food Project continue to provide food support to over 1,000 households each month. With reduced funding from the State Food Purchase Program, more community donations are needed. This year, Bucks County synagogues have been ask to collect kosher soup (in boxes or cans), low salt is preferred. To make the total Mitzvah Food Project a success we ask that:

Religious School NewsWe are very excited for the first days of school. Be sure to mark your calendars!

First Day of Midweek ClassesWednesday, September 22, 5:30 p.m., followed by a brief Erev Sukkot service and Pizza in the Hut. We’ll meet at the TvS sukkah at NFMH.

First Day of Religious SchoolSunday, September 26, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at the Goodnoe Elementary School, 298 Frost Lane in Newtown.

Wendy Friedman, our fearless Education Committee Chairperson, has stepped down from that position after years of dedicated service. Marc Bloom stepped up to the plate and is our new Ed Chairperson. The school is in a wonderful and strong position to grow, so if you know of any families who may be inter-ested in our school, please send them our way! Rabbi Anna and Marc Bloom

Our Values-based CurriculumThe 5771 TvS Religious School Curriculum describes each class, sets clear basic and tefillah (prayer) goals,

states exactly what songs students will learn and topics they will explore — all within the Reconstructionist framework based on “The Values of Spiritual Peoplehood.” In creating age-appropriate programs and lessons of study we examine the values that follow. This structure provides roots and branches for our mission: to foster a lifelong love of Jewish learning and a sense of belonging to the Jewish people.

Hohmah (wisdom) takes us to texts both ancient and modern. As Reconstructionists we examine texts and hear the words and thoughts spoken to us in each civilization and culture study in formal ways — with added excitement as we make the text come alive with innovative and creative activities. Hidur Mitzvah (creativity) reminds us of a time in our observant past when the fine arts could be used only in beautifying a mitzvah — in the creation of ritual objects for the home and synagogue. We may now joyously open these avenues and many more in order to enhance the connection to our heritage in the modern and ancient world.Kedushah (spirituality) takes us to a different realm in which we can encounter the Divine. Prayer may be the first step in finding a spiritual connection, but other paths — community expression, nature, environmental im-mersions, music, meditation, rhythm, and dance — can each facilitate our journey to find our spiritual chord.Ziyonut (peoplehood), perhaps better known by the non-political term of Yisrael, signifies the connection of the Jewish people to the land and the people of Israel. As Reconstructionists we feel the connection to cultural Zion-ism through the use of modern religious and popular Israeli songs, but we also attempt to be sensitive to a way in which the children of Isaac and the children of Ishmael can be brothers and sisters in a world of peace. Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) makes us ask the question, “How can we as Jews and as human beings bring about a better world?” Our goal is for students to incorporate into their lives a sense of tzedek — social, po-litical, and economic justice — and a vision of working towards mending the local and global parts of their lives. Dereh Eretz (character) focuses on the manner in which we should behave towards one another. Using the lan-guage of the Holiness Code, we strive to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Our TvS community is based on a code for the treatment of ourselves and each other based on the values of our heritage. We strive to be good people.Kehillah (community) is at the core of our program and our philosophy. We aim to create a community that is deeply caring, thoughtful, inclusive, and engaging.

F TvS has a new Teen Program described on the next page.

Carolyn Bacher ז"ל On Sunday, July 25th, we received the heartwrenching news that our beloved Carolyn Bacher had passed away. Nearly everyone who was in town attended either Carolyn’s funeral or one of the shiva services, but nothing can adequately express our individual and communal sense of loss.

If you would like a copy of Joel’s and/or Rabbi Anna’s eulogy for Carolyn, please contact Rabbi Anna. She has copies of both that she can email you. Joel has also created a memory book about Carolyn and invites us to contribute a favorite story. As Rabbi Anna wrote in her sad announcement to us, “May Joel, Steve, Sue, Karen, Kyle, Owen, and Julian be comforted among the, mourners of Zion. And, may our community hold one another as we grieve and honor the very special neshama/spirit which with Carolyn blessed us.

Two Canadian geese in flight together adorned this card — along with a very generous donation to TvS. Joel asked that we reprint it for our community.

To Temple Tzedek v’Shalom, My name is unknown to you, but I’ve been a close friend of Carolyn and Joel Bacher for over forty years. The photograph on the front of this card seems a perfect symbol of their relationship. I have heard much about your temple through them and realize how mutually beneficial your relationship has been with them both. Carolyn’s tragic untimely death will deprive the world of so many more accomplishments that laid ahead. However, her joy, wisdom and love will be forever with us. Her family will not only take her genetic imprint, but also her joy and love of life. Most sincerely, Phyllis Freedman

Thank you from the Bachers The families of Joel and Steven Bacher would like to thank all of the members, Rabbi Anna, and friends of TvS for the tremendous outpouring of love and support

that has been gratefully received, on the passing of our beloved wife, mother (in-law) and grandmother, Carolyn Bacher. We love TvS, and we feel blessed to have you in our life.

In spiritual life, what we want is… Thanks to over half our congregants who responded to our recent survey, we now know that our members… want it all! We want meaningful, adult-oriented discussions. We want brief family friendly services with potluck dinners that are not too late for hungry children. We want traditional services. We want creative approaches to prayer and spirituality. More of us want to attend services on Friday evenings than on Saturday mornings. And thanks to the creativity and flexibility for which TvS is known, we have created a new approach to spirituality and prayer where we will have it all! After High Holidays, we will introduce a new format for Friday evening services, entitled “Friday Night with TvS.” We will debut this new format on October 15th. Come for all of it or just the part that works for you. Here is the new format:

5:0 p.m. Community set-up for potluck: We will gather as a community to prepare for the evening, just as your family would gather to set up for Shabbat dinner.

6:00 p.m. Kaballat Shabbat: Welcome in Shabbat with this family-friendly song-filled half hour.6:30 p.m. Potluck dinner7:15 p.m. Clean-up: We will share this task as a community.7:0 p.m. Ma’ariv: This adult-oriented service will take a variety of forms: a traditional service, a

discussion, a speaker, or some combination.

On Saturday mornings, we will continue with the traditional format beginning at 10 a.m., but we will prepare ourselves with a meditation, led by different members of the congregation, at 9:30 a.m. Feel free to join us for the meditation or to arrive in time for the start of services. Please be sure to check out our new offerings and give your feedback to Diane Gold, Ruth Jampol, or Rabbi Anna.

Board News Rob Weintraub stepped off the board at the end of June. He is now in Maryland weekdays for work, com-ing home on weekends. Rob served on our Board for years, including two years as co-President. He headed High Holiday planning before and after being president and he taught in our religious school before, during, and after being president. As someone at our recent BBQ remarked, “He’s an all-around nice guy,” and we want to thank him for all of his years of service. The next TvS Board meeting will be October 13, 2010 at Ruth Jampol’s house, 456 Lafayette Street, Newtown, PA 18940. Please contact any board mem-bers for information or with your ideas. Contact infor-mation is always on page 2 of the newsletter.

Mitzvah CornerShul Thank You’sThank you to Susan Talia Delone and Fran and Bernie

Heyman who hosted and lead our summer Torah study sessions.

Thank you to Diane and Arnie Gold who hosted and Naomi Mindlin who lead a Friday evening service in July. Thanks to Diane and Arnie for hosting our High Holiday meeting in August, too.

TvS ContributesOur synagogue has been collecting money which we distribute to various charity groups on a varying time basis. Over the summer, TvS contributed to Delaware River Keepers Network, to forward the goals of the organization.

Baby Sitters Available! We’re certified by the Red Cross.

Do you want to go out and have fun, but don’t have anyone to watch your kids?We can help you with that! Just give us call at 215*504*5571.

If you have any friends who are looking for baby sitters, please tell them about us! Thanks,

Michela and Hannah Lewis, TvS teens!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! The Kosher Meals on Wheels program, which operates from Greenwood House in Ewing, New Jersey, is in need of volunteers to deliver meals to homebound people. This involves driving to Greenwood House, picking up the meals (between 10:30 & 11 a.m.), and delivering them. Deliveries are Monday–Friday. There are usually 6–8 stops to make and most deliveries can be accomplished in an hour. I would estimate a 2–3 hour commitment from the time you leave your house to the time you return. Signing up for even one delivery/month would be helpful. I have been delivering meals twice/month for more than year. It has been a real pleasure to perform this service. Some of the people just take the food but others appreciate this small social interaction. If interested, please contact Joan Rubin-Kritz at Greenwood House: (609) 88-591, ext. 0. I would also be glad to answer any questions. Michele Kleinbaum (15)49-7841 or [email protected].

Membership Help Needed All of us at TvS feel sadness and loss as we enter our first High Holiday season without Carolyn Bacher. Carolyn was a friend to so many of us. She was also the first voice many of us heard when we called to inquire about TvS; the face that greeted us when we walked into our first service; and the warm presence who made us feel at home in our new congregation. Carolyn, of course, is irreplaceable. Yet we need to find people who will carry on the wonderful work she did as chair of our Membership Committee. We are in great need of one or more people who can reach out to prospective members, answer inquiries about TvS, and welcome new members into the congregation. If you love TvS, enjoy meeting people, and have a little extra time, we need to hear from you! If you are more of a “behind the scenes” person, we can also use your help with mailing out information, keeping track of prospective members, and other organizational tasks. If you can help with membership tasks, please contact Ruth at [email protected].

Shana Tova!
