VETORIX ENGINEERING s.r.l. is a privately owned Italian company. Its origins are in advanced Non Destructive Inspection of metallic materials (VETORIX s.r.l. - Mothercompany since 1983) in many different sectors of industrial productions. The company emerged from an independent R&D program developed by VETORIX s.r.l. in 2003 finalised to a technology/ knowhow transfer from the inspection of metallic material to the advanced NDI of Composite materials structures. The venture rapidly evolved into a highly focused and effective group of expertise technicians which are the heart of Vetorix Engineering. The team has improved their skills and experience in different sectors providing the more reliable NDI solution using the latest NDI technologies.

Non Destructive Inspection

OUR COMPANY

VETORIX ENGINEERING aim to be a partner technologically skilled for investigation and analysis of these innovative materials. An accurate evaluation about the material selection, manufacturing process, working conditions, load and stress, lead to an engineering approach of the inspection. The result of our inspection wants to give reliable info about integrity status of the structure, to asses any specific discontinuity generated by the manufacturing process or after a crash, to study the behaviour of flaws (eg. fatigue), using leading edge technologies and inspection systems able to find out even the smallest material discontinuity (such as cracks, delamination, disbonding, etc...). The inspection approach is customised for every application/needs thanks to our wide experience on many different production processes (filament winding, RTM, VARTM, Autoclave, Compression Moulding,…).

The Basic service pack involves some inspection techniques based on different and reliable NDT Methods in order to ensure the best PoD (Probability of Detection), this means to localise and characterise a wide variety of discontinuities, suggesting the best way to understand and fix the common manufacturing problems.

Every NDI techniques has some limits, so become important to know the performance of each single technique via a PoD analysis.

For example, one of the main classification of the NDI methods is: surface or volumetric. “Surface” are those can not to detect flaws on thicker section but only within the “near-surface layer”, instead of “volumetric” one which can provide a good sensitivity in depth.

The NDI methods chosen among others are Ultrasonics Pulse Echo, Phased Array, Active/passive thermography, bond testers.

NDI Methods

NDI Process

The starting point is the selection of the NDI methods. In order to define the most reliable NDI procedure, some parameters has to be defined. For example the amount of parts have to be inspected, the required sensitivity , shape and size of the structures, materials, final acceptance criteria and so on. Anyway a standard NDI process start with the NDI method’s selection, going through the specific technique or equipment. The following step is the first batch of inspection aimed to define the sensitivity of the NDI apparatus, the basic calibration, all the settings, the post-processing and interpretation of the results.

After that, a new NDI procedure will be issued as a resume of all the technical and operative details.

VTX Approach In order to increase the PoD factor the best approach is a combined techniques, and for the composite materials, is the PHASEOGRAPHY. It is demonstrated that the PoD will be enhanced almost to 100%, moreover this combined technique allow to reduce the inspection time and related costs.

Mobile Thermography Systems

for Non-Destructive Testing

The transportable testing system C-CheckIR enables you to inspect a wide range of materials with active thermography. C-CheckIR achieves precise and reliable measuring results and is especially suitable for inspections of composite materials like glass- or carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CRP/CFRP). The measuring instrument is easy to handle and does not require any extensive training. The complete inspection head is mounted on a light support frame that only needs to be placed at the right position on the object to be inspected. It does not even matter if the surface is vertical, since the system's frame is equipped with vacuum-suction-feet.

Active Thermography

A heat source gives the inspected material a thermal excitation. The flow of thermal energy through the material has a direct influence on the temperature development on the object's surface. During a measurement, this temperature development is recorded over a certain period of time with an infrared camera and a mathematical analysis is applied to the acquired data. Then, the processed data is displayed as an image that provides us with information about the internal structure of the material or about possible defects in it.

Corrosion mapping e visualizzazioni in A-B-C-scan. Generazione di report veloce ed intuitiva, soprattutto localizzazione e dimensionamento preciso delle discontinuità.

Time of Flight Diffraction tecnica che permette un’ispezione precisa e veloce di saldature anche di grosso spessore. Visualizzazione immediata delle scansioni e tracciabilità registrata di ogni settore scansionato, conforme all’ASME C.C. in sostituzione all’esame radiografico. Il sistema è automatizzato e permette ispezioni condotte da un solo operatore, rendendo il costo del servizio estremamente competitivo ripetto ai vecchi apparecchi con carrello a traslazione manuale.

Probability of Detection

The POD is the probability to detect even the small failure inside the material. The POD level is actually measuring the ability of an NDI method to localise, characterise and size any structural discontinuity that could affect the material performance. Our approach consist on the “redundancy effect“ which is obtained using more then one NDI technique during the same NDI session.

- 100% NDI to select the best equipment and basic configuration (eg: probe freq. - thermal exciting parameter,..)

- quick setting for CFRP/Alu bonding, CFRP/CFRP bonding and different CFRP thickness mapping;

- best setting for Curved Surface/Edges;

NDI on structural CFRP tubular part

•Target

The target of the inspection is to check for any delamination, cracks or any other possible damage or manufacturing defects. The NDI procedure has also to define initial the calibration setting of the equipment and the Acceptance Criteria. The main target is to ensure the highest PoD factor. In order to understand the probability of Detection of each NDI Technique, a couple of sample block (or real damaged parts) will be inspected with tomography, in the following slide some details will be enclosed.

Business Case

- NDI method’s selection; - Optimise the equipment’s calibration, in order to reach the maximum PoD factor; - Define a specific application using only the portable equipments; - Define the critical areas and the Acceptance Criteria;

•Inspection Target- manufacturing defects; - material discontinuities such as delamination, cracks, voids, - Define a specific application using only the portable equipments; - Define the critical areas and the Acceptance Criteria;
