GUIDELINES FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROJECT (SIP)
AND
SUMMER INTERNSHIP REPORT (SIR)
IMPORTANCE OF SIP AND CAPSTONE PROJECT
For students who do not have work experience the SIP and the capstone project is the focal point
based on which questions will be raised by prospective interviewer.
For students who have work experience a SIP adds a management perspective to his technical
knowledge. Also an empirical way of solving problem is learned by the student and also adds to
his arsenal of technical skill.
The SIP is an amalgamation of theoretical and practical learning. It is an opportunity to the
students to have an orientation of how a business entity works. Apart from the technical skills the
SIP develops the soft skills, people skills, analytical thinking to solve the problems faced by the
companies. The development of these skills are important to acquire jobs and thereafter sustain
in the job.
BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF SIP
A B School student has to have an investigators mindset. Investigation for a business school
student is to a find the cause of a problem. The first step is to find the problems, select one
problem, and then find out the various probable reasons which can cause the problem and then
empirically prove or disapprove the various postulated probable reasons.
Intuitively and by experience we know many of the causes of the problem and their solutions.
An exploration has to be done by the student by doing a reading of literature on similar problems
in the past. The purpose of the literature review is to find out some new and unique dimensions
qualitatively and quantitatively which we have missed and which could be very relevant in the
current investigation.
An understanding of research methodology is essential. Exploration by observation and interview
using open ended questionnaire will be required to have a grip over the various dimensions.
Survey type research generally will be required for approving or disapproving the postulated
dimensions in SIP
