EDITORIAL EDITOWe were beginning to think that summer was never going

to arrive. A few warm days teased us at the end of the winter season - only for the snowflakes to keep falling

until the beginning of June.

But come rain or shine we can enjoy the abundance of summer mountain activities on offer. In this edition Philip Field interviews and photographs talented local mountain biker Ludo May - if he doesn’t inspire you to venture up the mountain on your bike, then fellow photographer Sébastien Albert’s beautiful images of some local walks will surely tempt you to put on your hiking boots and take to the hills.

This summer, Verbier’s famous Festival celebrates 20 years of bringing beautiful music to the Swiss Alps. Kathryn Adams looks at how this year’s festivities are a true ‘family’ occasion.

We all like to have a peak behind the doors of Verbier’s luxury chalets: this month Rockefeller allows Verbier Life readers to enjoy their images of some of the most amazing interiors on offer in the Alps.

As usual, Eileen Smith offers us a seasonal recipe to revive our taste buds in between all these summer activities. This month she has chosen local fresh produce to create the summer classic soup, Gazpacho.

Nous commencions à penser que l'été n'arriverait jamais. Quelques belles journées nous ont fait envie à la fin de la saison d'hiver - mais les flocons de neige ont finalement continué à tomber jusqu'à début juin.

Mais qu'il pleuve ou qu'il fasse beau, nous pouvons profiter des nombreuses activités estivales de montagne à notre disposition. Dans ce numéro, Philip Field interview et photographie un cycliste VTT talentueux de la région, Ludo May - s'il n'arrive pas à vous donner envie d'aller explorer les montagnes avec votre VTT, alors les magnifiques images de certaines balades dans la région prises par Sébastien Albert vous motiveront certainement à enfiler vos chaussures de marche et partir vers les sommets.

Cet été, le célèbre Verbier Festival fête 20 ans consacrés à faire venir une musique magnifique dans les Alpes suisses. Kathryn Adams observe comment les festivités de cette année sont un véritable événement à vivre en famille.

Nous aimons tous avoir la chance de jeter un coup d'oeil derrière les portes closes des luxueux chalets de Verbier. Ce mois-ci, Rockefeller donne la chance aux lecteurs de Verbier Life d'apprécier leurs images de certains des plus incroyables intérieurs disponibles dans les Alpes.

Comme d'habitude, Eileen Smith nous propose une recette de saison pour réveiller nos papilles entre toutes ces activités d'été. Ce mois-ci, elle a sélectionné des produits frais du terroir local pour préparer un grand classique estival, le Gazpacho.

This spring, having stowed away their ski gear, a group of ten Verbier regulars headed down to Saint-Tropez to take the helm of Manitou, J.F. Kennedy's presidential yacht, once known as the ‘Floating White House’. In a hard-fought Lady's Cup, the all-female team, captained by Alice Ardis sailed off with the trophy. The team is becoming a regular on the regatta scene in the Mediterranean. Verbier resident, Melinda Kilkenny is a shareholder in this beautiful, teak-finished classic 18.6m yawl steeped in history, which is now based permanently in Cannes where she will be raced regularly on the regatta circuit. THE VIETNAM SWIM NAGE POUR LE VIETNAMIn May, Julie, a physiotherapist with The Verbier Touch, and her sister Christine flew to Vietnam to volunteer their physiotherapy skills in an orphanage for disabled children and children with learning disabilities. Although Vietnam has now been at peace for many years, the effects of war continue to haunt not only the adult population of this beautiful country but also its children as many of their disabilities are a direct consequence of the use by the USA of the defoliant Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Julie and Christine are currently raising money to provide the local children with some specialised therapy equipment, with 100% of the money going directly to the children in need. Prior to leaving, as part of their fundraising effort on Tuesday, March 19, Julie and Christine jointly swam the equivalent distance of the narrowest width of Vietnam in one day – 50,000m; 25,000m each! Cheered on by The Verbier Touch staff and friends, Julie swam 1,000 lengths of the 25m pool in Verbier while her sister swam 750 lengths of the 33m Aquarena Pool in the UK; a stunning achievement. If you would like to support this worthy cause, contact Julie on [email protected] En mai, Julie, physiothérapeute chez Verbier Touch et sa sœur Christine se sont envolées pour le Vietnam pour exercer de manière bénévole leur activité de physiothérapeutes dans un orphelinat pour enfants handicapés ou ayant des difficultés d'apprentissage. Bien que le Vietnam ne soit plus en guerre depuis de nombreuses années, les effets de la guerre continuent encore à hanter non seulement la population adulte de ce magnifique pays, mais également ses enfants, et un grand nombre de leurs handicaps sont les conséquences directes de l'utilisation par les USA du défoliant Agent Orange pendant la guerre du Vietnam. Julie et Christine sont actuellement en train de récolter des fonds pour fournir les enfants en matériel spécialisé de thérapie, avec le 100% des fonds allant directement aux enfants dans le besoin.

Avant de partir, dans le cadre de leur récolte de fonds, Julie et Christine ont nagé conjointement, le 19 mars en une journée, la distance équivalent au point le plus étroit du Vietnam, 50'000m ; 25'000m chacune! Encouragée par les employés de The Verbier Touch et ses amis, Julie a nagé 1'000 longueurs de 25m de la piscine de Verbier, pendant que sa sœur effectuait 750 traversées de 33m de la Aquarena Pool en Angleterre, un exploit impressionnant. PEAKS AND STEEPS: SKIING BIG FACES AROUND THE EIGER SOMMETS ET PENTES RAIDES: A SKI SUR DES FACES IMPRESSIONNANTES AUTOUR DE L'EIGERThis year’s spring snow conditions allowed descents of faces rarely skied. Thanks to the enormous amounts of snow, even some first descents were attempted. Verbier-based skiers Pette Halme, Phil Meier, Christian Paul and Chris Kohler took in the Bernese Oberland on their “Haute Route des pentes raides“ through this impressive Unesco World Heritage environment. Access to this enormous high Alpine playground, is provided by the Jungfraujoch rail system (Europe’s highest train station). The tour led them to summits such as the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, Fiescherhörner, Aletschhörn, Gross Wannenhorn, Finsteraarhorn, Agassizhorn, Lauteraarhorn, ending at the Schreckhorn. The aim was to climb each peak over the classic winter ascent and ski down by the steepest possible route. The trip’s documentary ski mountaineering-movie will be shown at several outdoor film festivals. You will also be able to read more about this adventure in a future edition of Verbier Life.Les conditions de printemps cette année ont permis d'effectuer des descentes sur des faces qui sont rarement skiées. Grâce aux énormes quantités de neige, certaines premières ont même été effectuées. Basés à Verbier, les skieurs Pette Halme, Phil Meier, Christian Paul et Chris Kohler se sont rendus dans l'Oberland Bernois pour effectuer leur « Haute Route des pentes raides » à travers cette impressionnante région classée au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco. L'accès à cet énorme terrain de jeu alpin est fourni par le réseau ferroviaire du Jungfraujoch, la gare de train la plus élevée d'Europe. Leur aventure les a emmenés sur des sommets tels que l'Eiger, le Mönch, la Jungfrau, le Fiescherhörner, l'Aletschhörn, le Gross Wannenhorn, le Finsteraarhorn, l'Agassizhorn, le Lauteraarhorn, pour terminer par le Schreckhorn. Leur but était de gravir chaque sommet par sa voie classique d'hiver et de redescendre à skis par la voie la plus raide possible. Un film documentaire de ski-alpinisme relatant leur périple sera présenté dans différents festivals de films de montagne. VERBIER MUSIC FESTIVAL AND ALTITUDE SUMMER CAMPS VERBIER MUSIC FESTIVAL ET LES CAMPS D'ETE ALTITUDEThis summer sees the new and exciting collaboration of the prestigious Verbier Festival and Altitude Summer Camps. This summer, they will provide children from all over the world with the first orchestral training programme in Verbier. Accepted by audition only, children from ages 15-17 will take part in an exciting three-week camp including orchestral training, sectional rehearsals and individual coaching, all coordinated by Daniel Harding, Music

Director for the Verbier Festival Music Camp. Verbier 3-D presents ‘Mutations’ July 27 Verbier 3-D presente ‘Mutations’ 27 juillet

This event epitomises 3-D’s appetite for innovation, with artists at the forefront of influencing and changing the shape of contemporary art globally. As well as a photographic

exhibition at Médran (from July 20 to August 4), there will be an Artists’ Talk on July 27, inviting the public to hear the guest artists discuss their interpretation and artistic expression of the ‘Mutations’ theme.

Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky: That Subliminal Kid and David Gryn, Founder of ArtProjx will be joined by Sanford Biggers, eminent artist and Assistant Professor at Columbia University’s Visual Arts programme and Kiki Thompson, Chief Executive and co-founder of Verbier 3-D. The talk will be moderated by Verbier 3-D’s Curatorial Director, Paul Goodwin. David Gryn will screen a selection of videos by acclaimed artists after the talk.

Later in the evening, Paul will collaborate with David to deliver a cutting edge music and art video performance with an appearance from Crista Kende, violist in the Verbier Festival Orchestra performing with DJ Spooky. Paul is currently the Artist in Residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The event will also see the launch of the ‘Ship of Tolerance’ exhibition www.shipoftolerance.org, a 3-D collaboration with Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, considered Russia’s premier contemporary artists. Paintings from 200 children from the Val de Bagnes on the theme of tolerance will become the sails of a ship that will be displayed in New York at the Dumbo Arts Festival. Verbier 3-D is supporting Swiss junior pianist, Fanny Monnet, who will play at the exhibition opening in New York and in Moscow at the other ‘Ship of Tolerance’ exhibition this year. The children’s work will be exhibited in Verbier before they leave for New York and return to Verbier for next year’s ‘Ship of Tolerance’.

Verbier Festival: A Family Affair Histoire(s) de famille

Since the creation of the Verbier Festival 20 years ago, Martin T:son Engström, Festival founder and to this day its driving force, has encouraged the invited musicians to depart from

their usual repertoire and step outside their comfort zone, thereby offering soloists the possibility to perform together in a new framework. These unique moments afford both musicians and their audiences experiences rich in creativity, originality and emotion, all as envisioned by Martin T:son Engström.

Many artists take advantage of this flexible and experimental framework to give a “family” performance in the true sense of the word. Mischa Maisky, one of the Festival’s most loyal performers, with 18 out of 20 editions to his credit, is a case in point. Two of his children are also musicians of repute: Lily (26 years old) is a pianist and Sasha (24) a violinist. Although Mischa performed in Verbier with Lily in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 and with Sasha in 2009, until this anniversary year they had as yet not performed together as a trio. This omission will be corrected on July 20 when they take over Verbier Church to give voice to Schubert, Brahms and Chostakovitch. Mischa avows that performing with his children helps him to find a balance between career and family. Perhaps one day we will be able to appreciate five members of this musical family on stage in Verbier.

But do musical parents always expect their children to follow in their footsteps?

Mischa never insisted that his children become professional musicians but for him it was “crucial that they were surrounded by music and they learn and appreciate beautiful music”.

Lisa Batiashvili, the famous Georgian violinist, also comes from a musical family where she benefitted from her parents’ encouragement and her father’s tuition. Today, herself the mother

Ces moments uniques offrent aux musiciens ainsi qu’à leur public des expériences riches en créativité, originalité et émotions, ce qui est tout à fait dans l’esprit de Martin T:son Engström.

De nombreux artistes profitent de ce cadre flexible et expérimental pour se produire véritablement « en famille »: Mischa Maisky, par exemple, l’un des artistes les plus fidèles du Festival, avec 18 éditions (sur 20) à son acquis. Deux de ses enfants sont également des musiciens de renom : Lily (26 ans) est pianiste, Sasha (24 ans) violiniste. Si Mischa s’est déjà produit à Verbier avec Lily en 2006, 2007, 2008 et 2010 et avec Sasha en 2009, ils ne se sont jamais produits en Trio à Verbier jusqu’à cette année anniversaire. Cette lacune sera comblée le 20 juillet lorsqu’ils investiront l’Eglise pour faire résonner Schubert, Brahms et Chostakovitch. Mischa avoue que se produire avec ses enfants lui permet de trouver un équilibre entre carrière et famille. Peut-être qu’on pourra un jour venir admirer les cinq membres de cette famille musicale sur scène à Verbier ?

Mais les parents musiciens souhaitent-ils toujours que leurs enfants suivent la même carrière ?

Mischa n’a jamais exigé que ses enfants deviennent musiciens professionnels mais pour lui, il était « essentiel qu’ils soient entourés par la belle musique, qu’ils l’apprennent et l’apprécient ».

Lisa Batiashvili, la célèbre violoniste géorgienne, est également issue d’une famille musicienne où elle a bénéficié de l’encouragement de ses parents et des enseignements de son père. Aujourd’hui mère de deux jeunes enfants, elle affirme qu’il est plus naturel de les initier à la musique quand ils sont jeunes et qu’ils l’apprennent comme une « langue maternelle » mais qu’il est indispensable d’évaluer si l’enfant en a vraiment envie. Elle ne veut

She does not want to impose a musical career on her children when they have so many other available options. She and her husband, French oboist François Leleux, previously performed together at the Verbier Festival in 2011, when they played some excerpts from their Mozart album. This year they will treat us to Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe in D Minor at 7pm on July 23.

Other “family” performances will be provided by the couple Pinchas Zukerman (violin, viola) and Amanda Forsyth (cello), together for the first time on the Verbier Festival stage on July 24 and 27, and the Capuçon brothers, long-standing members of the Verbier Festival Family. Renaud Capuçon came here first in 1995 as an Academy member. In 1996 he returned to the main stage as a soloist, followed in 2002 by his younger brother Gautier, a cellist. It isn’t unusual to see them playing together in Verbier. Their memorable concerts in 2002, 2004, 2011 and 2012 live on in the collective memory. Whilst the brothers were practically inseparable as debutants, they now concentrate on their solo careers, restricting their joint concerts to between 15 and 20 a year. We will be entitled to one of those on July 31 at 7pm.

Dowager of the “Family”, soprano Barbara Hendricks, first wife of Martin T:son Engström, gave her support to the very first edition and returns this year at 8pm on July 21 to enchant us with a selection for the aficionado from Monteverdi, Gounod and Ravel, rounded off with some negro spirituals.

Due to its policy of encouraging and facilitating exchanges between seasoned artists and rising talent, the Verbier Festival forges links between generations and across nationalities (not to mention the numerous romantic relationships which inevitably form) creating one big family which reunites every year in this idyllic and breathtaking setting in the Swiss Alps. And it is this warm and welcoming family atmosphere which makes the world’s major artists want to keep coming back to the Verbier Festival year after year.

We wish the Verbier Festival Family a very happy birthday! Long may it continue to grow and bring us pleasure!

Nous aurons droit à l’un d’entre eux le 31 juillet à 19h.

From the age of four, local mountain bike rider Ludo May could always be found on two wheels. Fast forward a decade, he was competing in his first downhill race and now, at twenty four, travels the globe with the Norco World Enduro Team as a professional rider. Verbier Life caught up with this local star to find out more about his career, living the dream and why he tips Verbier as the place to be this summer.

Dès l’âge de quatre ans, on retrouvait Ludo May, coureur VTT de la région, sur deux roues. Dix ans plus tard, il participait à sa première course de descente et maintenant à 24 ans, il voyage de par le monde en tant que coureur professionnel avec l’équipe Norco World Enduro. Verbier Life a rencontré cette vedette de la région pour en découvrir plus sur sa carrière, ce qu’il en est de vivre le rêve de sa vie et pourquoi il pense que Verbier est l’endroit de prédilection de cet été.

Tell us how you went from an amateur to professional mountain biker?

When I first started riding, it never entered my mind that one day I'd be competing in the World Cup. I simply rode because I loved it. At 16, Christophe Ebener from No Bounds (Verbier) sponsored me as a pro-shop rider. This, and my friends, gave me the confidence to enter more competitions and, at 17, I received my official race licence. From there I started to pick up more sponsors and, at 22, my big break came when I signed my first pro-contract with the Norco International Team.

What is it about Verbier that you love so much, is it simply that it's your home mountain or is Verbier a real gem in the mountain bike scene?

First off I will say both! These days I'm continually travelling the globe to compete - however, every time I return home I just look up and think what an amazing playground we have. As for snow sports in winter, Verbier in summer is simply epic for mountain biking, with well-formed, natural terrain that's perfect for firing down. There are so many quality single tracks throughout the Valais region.

Raconte-nous comment tu es passé du rang d’amateur à celui de coureur professionnel de VTT.

Quand j’ai commencé à faire du vélo, je n’avais jamais imaginé que je finirais par participer à la Coupe du Monde. Je faisais du vélo parce j’adorais ça. À 16 ans, Christophe Ebener de No Bounds (Verbier) m’a sponsorisé en tant que coureur pro du magasin. Ça, et mes amis, m’ont donné la confiance de participer à plus de compétitions et, à 17 ans, j’ai reçu ma licence officielle de course. À partir de ce moment, j’ai commencé à attirer plus de sponsors et, à 22 ans, on m’a donné ma chance et j’ai signé mon premier contrat professionnel avec Norco International Team.

Qu’est-ce qui te fait tant apprécier Verbier? Est-ce simplement parce que c’est ta montagne natale ou que Verbier est un véritable joyau dans le monde du VTT ?

Tout d’abord, je dirais les deux ! De ces jours, je sillonne constamment le monde pour les compétitions, mais chaque fois que je rentre à la maison, je n’ai qu’à lever les yeux pour me rendre compte à quel point le terrain de jeux ici est merveilleux. Comme pour les sports de neige en hiver, Verbier, en été, est un endroit épique pour le VTT, avec un terrain naturel bien formé, qui est parfait pour dévaler la pente. Il y a un grand nombre de parcours de grande qualité dans toute la région du Valais.

Now that mountain biking has become your career, do you find this brings an increase in pressure and expectation from your sponsors to perform?

For sure, it's important to me to keep my sponsors happy, but whilst I'm on my bike competing I'm thinking of nothing but my line. I try to give 100% every time I ride and if you start thinking about things too much then you just end up breaking everywhere – you need to stay focused. It's not just about the riding, I do a lot on my website (www.ludomay.ch) to promote my sponsors, as well as film and photo shoots.

Away from the track, what do you like to do to relax? Is there an off-season where you take a few weeks off the bike and forget about racing?

The bike season runs from April to October. In the time between I head abroad to train. This year I went to Malaga and Tenerife in Spain with the Norco Team and then after to Italy for a week. I love to ski though and, when I'm back in Verbier, I make sure I ski as much as possible. I also do a bit of motocross from time to time and, to fully chill out, I'll go hit some balls on the golf course.

Maintenant que le VTT est devenu ta carrière, estimes-tu qu’il y ait davantage de pression et d’attentes de la part de tes sponsors quant à la réalisation de bonnes performances?

Bien sûr, il est important de satisfaire les sponsors, mais quand je suis sur mon VTT pendant une compétition, je ne pense qu’à ma ligne. À chaque fois que je pratique du vélo, je donne du 100 % et si tu réfléchis trop, tu finis par freiner tout le temps – il faut rester focalisé. Il ne s’agit pas de simplement pratiquer du VTT, j’entreprends beaucoup de choses sur mon site internet afin de promouvoir mes sponsors, on y trouve aussi des films et des séances photo.

Loin des parcours que fais-tu pour te détendre ? Y a-t-il une période hors-saison quand tu marques une pause dans ta pratique du VTT et tu oublies les courses ?

La saison de VTT s’étend d’avril à octobre. Entre-temps, je pars à l’étranger pour m’entraîner. Cette année, je suis allé à Malaga et Ténériffe en Espagne avec l’équipe Norco et ensuite en Italie pendant une semaine. J’adore skier et quand je suis de retour à Verbier, je fais en sorte de skier autant que possible. De temps à autre, je fais aussi un peu de motocross, et pour vraiment me détendre, je vais taper des balles sur le parcours de golf.

For the mountain bikers reading this, who in the sport inspired you in your career?

For me it wasn't necessarily particular names but more seeing the pros on TV. I was inspired by the whole scene. The one person who stands out in my mind as a real driving factor in my career is Flo Golay (BMC Racing) - he's another local who's a good friend and really took me under his wing and helped me in my first races. Phil Meier gave me a lot of encouragement too.

What are your plans for this summer and looking ahead 10 years, where do you see yourself?

In previous years I've ridden more on the downhill circuit but this summer I'll be concentrating on the seven stops of the World Enduro World Series for my team. As for the future, I like to live in the present, not plan too much and go wherever my bike takes me.

And finally, what's with your crazy haircut?

Haha, I was with National Swiss Team in Macolin (the Swiss Federal Institute of Sports) in April - we don't get to see each other that often, so we thought a good way to bond would be for us all to get stupid haircuts. My girlfriend is going to kill me!

Pour les VTTistes lisant ceci, peux-tu nous dire qui, au sein de ce sport, t’a inspiré dans ta carrière?

Personnellement, ce ne sont pas forcément des noms spécifiques, mais plutôt d’avoir vu les pros à la télévision. Le milieu entier m’a inspiré. Une personne qui a retenu mon attention et qui a été un vrai moteur dans ma carrière est Flo Golay (BMC Racing) – il est également de la région et un très bon ami à moi. Il m’a vraiment pris sous son aile et m’a aidé avec mes premières courses. Phil Meier m’a aussi beaucoup encouragé.

Qu’as-tu de planifié pour cet été et où t’imagines-tu dans 10 ans?

Ces dernières années, je me suis concentré sur le circuit de descente, mais cet été, je vais me focaliser sur les sept manches du Enduro World Series pour mon équipe. Quant au futur, j’aime vivre au jour le jour, sans trop planifier et aller où mon vélo me mène.

Et pour terminer, c’est quoi cette coupe de cheveux?!

Haha, j’étais avec l’équipe nationale suisse à Macolin en avril – on ne se voit pas très souvent et on s’est dit qu’une bonne façon de forger les liens était de se faire faire des coupes de cheveux saugrenues. Ma petite amie va me tuer !

In this edition of Verbier Life, Sébastien shares some ideas on where to hike to experience some of the area’s most stunning views.

You have been photographing the region of Verbier for over a decade now. How does the area keep inspiring you year after year?The mountains are an endless source of inspiration to me. Perspectives are constantly changing and evolving while I’m hiking, which keeps the journey interesting. I’ve grown to know this region very well over the years, yet I still get blown away by its beauty. Depending on the weather and time of year, the same spot can look totally different. Heading out into the mountains, I’m always on the lookout for fresh, new perspectives from which I can shoot, and that’s what keeps me inspired!

Which is one of your favourite walks that can be accessed on foot from Verbier?The Pierre Avoi is without a doubt one of my favourites. I’ve been up there countless times over the years, yet every visit is a source of new discoveries and photographic opportunities. There are a number of interesting ways to reach the top, all varying in distance and difficulty. Everyone who’s been there will surely agree the views are simply unparalleled, and well worth the effort. Perhaps my favourite – and certainly the most stunning and aerial – is the path from St-Christophe, which takes you up to the Chute du Bisse and along the Crêtes de la Marlène. When short on time, thanks to Téléverbier, one can take the gondola up to Savoleyres. Alternatively, if time is on your side, why not take the scenic route around from Ruinettes, which overlooks Verbier most of the way? And if you wish, let the lifts whisk you up from Medran to Ruinettes, and thus save on verticals. The Verbier Tourist Office, situated at Place Centrale, can provide you with maps and offer helpful advice with regards to itineraries and weather.

If you were to go a little bit further afield, and in search of interesting flora and fauna, which would be your walk of choice?I’d suggest heading up the valley, and discovering the Haut Val de Bagnes nature reserve, an unspoiled gem right on our doorstep. You can either choose the hike up to Louvie Lake from Fionnay, or journey further to the end of the valley and hike around, or by, the Mauvoisin Lake. The Louvie hike offers good chances of spotting ibex and chamois, but it is a rather strenuous climb, more suited to the advanced hiker. In summer, the emblematic edelweiss flower grows on the hillsides surrounding Lake Mauvoisin. The area offers possibilities for hikers of all abilities: some will choose a leisurely

Vous photographiez la région de Verbier depuis plus d’une dizaine d’années maintenant. Comment celle-ci réussit-elle à vous inspirer année après année?Les montagnes représentent pour moi une source intarissable d’inspiration. Lors d’une randonnée en montagne, les perspectives changent et évoluent constamment et tiennent mon intérêt en éveil. J’ai eu l’occasion au fil des ans de bien me familiariser avec la région, mais la majesté des lieux ne cesse de m’éblouir. Selon la météo qu’il fait et le temps de l’année, le même endroit peut changer du tout au tout. En parcourant la montagne, je suis toujours à l’affût de nouveaux angles de prise de vue, et c’est ce qui nourrit mon inspiration!

Parmi les randonnées que l’on peut entreprendre à pied à partir de Verbier, laquelle préférez-vous?Un de mes coups de cœur est celle de la Pierre Avoi. J’y ai fait quantité de randonnées depuis de nombreuses années, mais chaque visite est à l’origine de nouvelles découvertes et possibilités de prises de vues exceptionnelles. Pour se rendre au sommet, il y a plusieurs parcours intéressants, de différentes longueurs et de niveaux de difficultés variés. Je suis persuadé que tous les randonneurs qui l’ont atteint ont trouvé que l’effort en valait bien la peine, en raison de la beauté incomparable des paysages. L’un de mes itinéraires préférés – et incontestablement le plus éblouissant – est le sentier qui passe par St-Christophe, et que l’on emprunte jusqu’à la Chute du Bisse et le long des Crêtes de la Marlène. Si vous disposez de peu de temps, vous pouvez prendre la télécabine de Savoleyres et ainsi, grâce à Téléverbier, réduire grandement votre temps de marche. Par contre, si vous avez tout votre temps, pourquoi ne pas emprunter le sentier pittoresque depuis les Ruinettes, qui en grande partie surplombe Verbier? Si vous préférez, prenez les remonte-pentes pour passer en un rien de temps de Médran aux Ruinettes, et ainsi éviter la montée abrupte. Le personnel de l’Office du tourisme de Verbier, situé à la Place Centrale, peut vous fournir des cartes et des conseils utiles sur les itinéraires et la température.

Si l’on se déplace un peu plus loin, à la recherche de la faune et de la flore propres à la région, quel serait le meilleur choix de randonnée à votre avis? Je suggère de remonter la vallée, à la découverte de la réserve naturelle du Haut Val de Bagnes, un joyau de nature intacte qui fait partie de notre voisinage. Vous avez le choix de vous rendre au lac Louvie depuis Fionnay, ou d’aller jusqu’au bout de la vallée et de marcher autour ou le long du lac Mauvoisin. Vous avez de fortes chances d’apercevoir des bouquetins et des chamois si vous faites la randonnée du lac Louvie, mais la montée est plutôt abrupte et convient davantage au randonneur aguerri. L’été, l’edelweiss, la fleur emblématique de la Suisse pousse sur les flancs des collines ceinturant le lac Mauvoisin. La région offre plein de possibilités aux randonneurs de tous les niveaux. Certains opteront pour une agréable balade sur un chemin de

stroll along the lake on a wide, well-trodden dirt road, while the more adventurous might wish to spend the entire day and do a full tour around the lake.

If you had to offer the average amateur photographer one tip on a walk, what would it be?Set off at the crack of dawn to take full advantage of the rich morning light. Your chances of spotting wildlife will be much greater then, as animals tend to feed during the quiet and calm of the early morning hours. The weather is also more stable in the morning, offering clear skies and ‘crisp’ views, whereas afternoons tend to be hazier as temperatures rise. Furthermore, the convective clouds formed by the hot rising air not only ‘eat up’ the light, but can form potentially dangerous storm cells.

Can you see the region continuing to inspire you in the future? Yes, definitely. Just the other day, I discovered a great new spot right near my house, offering stunning views of the Rhône valley and exciting new photo ops. Our region offers a wealth of beauty waiting to be discovered.

What other parts of the world would you like to explore?There are numerous new destinations I would like to explore, but Iceland, New Zealand and Patagonia are at the top of my wish list. However, I feel privileged to have so much to explore right here because, let’s face it… Verbier IS a great destination!

Que conseilleriez-vous au photographe amateur qui veut partir en randonnée? Partez dès les premières lueurs du jour, pour profiter pleinement de la richesse de la lumière du matin. Vous augmentez ainsi sensiblement vos chances d’apercevoir des animaux sauvages puisqu’ils ont tendance à profiter du calme et du silence du petit matin pour se nourrir. Le matin, la température est plus stable, le ciel est plus dégagé et l’air est plus limpide ; en après-midi, alors que la température augmente, le temps a tendance à devenir brumeux. De plus, les nuages de convection formés par les courants ascendants d’air chaud, non seulement « dévorent » la lumière, mais risquent de former des cellules orageuses pouvant mettre en péril les randonneurs.

À votre avis, est-ce que la région continuera de vous inspirer au cours des années à venir? Oui, sans aucun doute! Il y a à peine quelques jours, j’ai découvert un nouvel endroit merveilleux tout près de chez moi, offrant des vues formidables de la vallée du Rhône et de nombreuses possibilités nouvelles et intéressantes pour faire de la photo. La beauté sans fin de notre région attend tout simplement d’être découverte.

Quelles autres régions du monde aimeriez-vous explorer?Un grand nombre de nouvelles destinations m’interpellent, mais l’Islande, la Nouvelle-Zélande et la Patagonie me tiennent particulièrement à cœur. N’empêche que je me sens privilégié d’avoir autant à voir ici même car, admettons-le, Verbier EST un endroit par excellence à explorer!

If you’re not fortunate enough to grow your own vegetables then you can always buy fresh local produce at the weekly Sunday market in Verbier or every Thursday down in Martigny. Spanish friends and families have heated debates about the perfect mixture of tomatoes, green peppers and cucumber, whether the recipe should include bread or not and about the correct consistency. I think you should have the final say and so here’s my basic recipe for you to adapt.

GAZPACHOServes 6

10 large ripe tomatoes

6 red peppers, seeded

3 yellow peppers, seeded

2 red onions

1 cucumber, English-style preferably, seeded but not peeled

3 spring onions

2 garlic cloves

1 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley

Juice of 1 lemon

2 tbsp sherry vinegar

1 tbsp good olive oil

2 tsp caster sugar

Sea salt and black pepper to taste

2 tbsp diced avocado (optional)

1 tsp smoked paprika (optional)

Cut a small cross in the end of each tomato, then put them in a heatproof mixing bowl. Pour boiling water over the tomatoes and leave them for a minute or so. Lift each one out with a draining spoon and slip off the skins. They should come away easily. Cut each tomato in half, discard the seeds and core, then put them in a blender. Chop the peppers and add them to the tomatoes with the onion, peeled and chopped, and the roughly chopped cucumber. Remove most of the green shoots from the spring onions, then roughly chop the white part and add to the tomatoes with the crushed garlic and parsley. Add the lemon juice.

Blitz the mixture until it is at the consistency you like. It's obviously up to you. Only you know how thick you like your soup. Now start to season to taste with salt, the sherry vinegar, olive oil and sugar. Start with the amounts in the list, then tweak to your liking. Add optional additions if using. Enjoy!

Pendant les mois d’été, les jardins soignés du Val de Bagnes regorgent de délicieux légumes frais. Si vous n’avez pas la chance de faire pousser vos propres légumes, vous aurez l’occasion d’acheter des produits du terroir au marché hebdomadaire du dimanche à Verbier ou tous les jeudis à Martigny. Des amis et des familles espagnols entretiennent de vives discussions quant au mélange parfait de tomates, poivrons verts et concombre, l’inclusion, ou non, de pain dans la recette et la consistance idéale de la soupe. J’estime que vous devriez avoir le dernier mot – voici ma recette de base que vous pouvez adapter.

GAZPACHO Pour 6 personnes

10 grosses tomates mûres

6 poivrons verts, épépinés

3 poivrons jaunes, épépinés

2 oignons rouges

1 concombre, de style anglais de préférence, épépiné, mais pas pelé

3 oignons tiges

2 gousses d’ail

1 c. à soupe de persil plat haché

Jus d’un citron

2 c. à soupe de vinaigre de sherry

1 c. à soupe d’huile d’olive de qualité

2 c. à café de sucre en poudre très fin

Sel de mer et poivre noir au goût

2 c. à soupe d’avocat en dés (facultatif)

1 c. à café de paprika fumé (facultatif)

Avec un couteau, marquer d’une croix le dessous des tomates et les placer dans un bol résistant à la chaleur. Verser de l’eau bouillante sur les tomates et les laisser pendant environ une minute. Retirer chacune d’elle à l’aide d’une cuillère de drainage et enlever la peau. Celle-ci devrait se détacher facilement. Couper chaque tomate en deux, enlever les graines et le cœur, et mettre dans un mixeur. Couper les poivrons et les ajouter aux tomates avec l’oignon rouge, pelé et haché, et le concombre découpé en gros morceaux. Retirer les pousses vertes des oignons tiges et grossièrement découper la partie blanche, l’ajouter aux tomates avec l’ail écrasé et le persil. Ajouter le jus de citron.

Mélanger tous les ingrédients dans le mixeur jusqu’à l’obtention d’une consistance qui vous convient. C’est évidemment à vous de voir, vous êtes seul à savoir quelle épaisseur de soupe vous convient. Assaisonner au goût avec du sel, le vinaigre de sherry, l’huile d’olive et le sucre. Commencer par utiliser les mesures données dans la liste, puis ajuster à votre guise. Ajouter les compléments éventuels (si utilisation). Régalez-vous !

Why drive long distances when you can find some great wines and meet some inspiring winemakers right here in Valais. Martigny is the portal for Verbier and a great

starting point for any wine tour. Gérald Besse in Les Rappes above Martigny is an easy visit and you and your friends will be happily received if you phone. Alternatively just drive out of Martigny towards Branson, cross the bridge and on your right is a great wine bar “Pavillon Fol’terres” where you can taste any number of local wines and food products from the region and, if you’re lucky, you may find yourself rubbing shoulders with local makers who tend to finish a hard day in the vineyards there.

Further east along the valley is Saillon village, which hides within its walls a wonderful wine bar offering all the wines made in the region. Next step is, of course, Chamoson, wine village par excellence; some of the best wines in the region come from these gentle slopes. A wine tasting centre can be found near the church in the town centre and a large number of wineries will offer a tasting tour if you phone ahead.

Further down the road is the village of Vetroz, where the Jean-René Germanier winery is a great place to stop and taste. A small restaurant is right next door and you will find a caveau in the basement behind.

Finish your tour in the village of Sierre; a wine museum is hidden in this village, if you look you will find. Of course no wine tour in Valais would be complete without a visit to the Château de Villa, also in Sierre, which holds a huge selection of wines. If you’re really hungry after all this travel (you are now only 70km from Verbier), why not drop into the famous Terminus Restaurant in Sierre, the two-Michelin-star restaurant of famous chef Didier de Courten with a bistro that should not be missed.

Pourquoi conduire sur de longues distances alors que vous pouvez trouver des grands vins et rencontrer des vignerons qui suscitent l'inspiration ici-même en Valais. Martigny est le portail pour Verbier

et un excellent point de départ pour une tournée des caves. Gérald Besse aux Rappes, au-dessus de Martigny, est une visite facile et vous et vos amis serez accueillis avec plaisir si vous téléphonez avant. Vous pouvez aussi sortir de Martigny en direction de Branson, traverser le pont, sur votre droite se trouve un excellent bar à vins, le Pavillon Fol'terres, où vous pourrez déguster un grand nombre de vins et produits du terroir. Si vous avez de la chance, il se peut que vous vous retrouviez avec les vignerons locaux qui ont tendance à finir ici une dure journée de travail dans les vignes.

Plus à l'est, le long de la vallée, se trouve le village de Saillon, qui cache entre ses murs un magnifique bar à vins proposant tous les vins produits dans la région. La prochaine étape est bien sûr Chamoson, le village viticole par excellence, certains des meilleurs vins de la région proviennent de ces pentes douces. On peut trouver un centre de dégustation de vins près de l'église au centre du village et un grand nombre de domaines proposent des dégustations si vous appelez à l'avance.

Plus bas sur la route se trouve le village de Vétroz, dans lequel un des meilleurs endroits pour s'arrêter et faire une dégustation est le domaine de Jean-René Germanier. Un petit restaurant se trouve juste à côté et vous trouverez un caveau en sous-sol juste derrière.

Terminez votre tournée par le village de Sierre, un musée du vin s'y cache ; vous le trouverez si vous vous donnez la peine de chercher. Bien entendu, aucune tournée des vins en Valais ne serait complète sans une visite du Château de Villa, également à Sierre, qui propose un choix immense de vins. Si vous avez vraiment faim après tout ce périple (vous vous trouvez à présent à peine à 70km de Verbier), pourquoi ne pas vous arrêter au célèbre Restaurant Le Terminus à Sierre, le restaurant aux deux étoiles Michelin tenu par le célèbre chef Didier de Courten, avec un côté bistrot à ne louper sous aucun prétexte.
