Verbier Life. We hope you are finding the magazine an entertaining source of information. There never seems to be a shortage of content for the magazine due to Verbier’s ever increasing number of events and emerging new businesses. Along with the obvious attraction of outdoor activities, the local and international community is another major reason why people chose to visit, or move to the region.

Many of these people who live and work here have an interesting story to tell, we hope to share some of these stories in the magazine this coming winter. This month, Marko Shapiro generously shares with us a collection of photos from over 35 years of living in Verbier. In this case, pictures most definitely say more than words – Marko’s photos tell the story of the evolution of winter sports over the past four decades.

Swiss snowboarder, Andre Sommer, is another Verbier character who offers some freeride safety tips, whilst Dominique Blanjean advises us how to avoid knee injuries. Congratulations to Scottish ski racer and Verbier-regular, Angus Morison who recently won a British TV series. The contestants were challenged in some of the world’s most hostile environments. Read about his experience on page 56.

Tasting the recipes featured in Verbier Life is definitely one of the perks of organising the magazine. This months steamed ginger cake, has been one of the favourites so far and is worth trying out at home.

Le temps passe... nous avons déjà embarqué dans la quatrième saison de Verbier Life. Nous espérons que vous trouvez le magazine divertissant et riche en informations. Il semble que nous ne sommes jamais à court de sujets, grâce aux événements et services toujours plus nombreux à Verbier. En plus des activités sportives à l’extérieur, la communauté locale et internationale est une autre raison majeure qui attire des touristes dans la région ou même de nouveaux résidents.

Beaucoup de gens qui vivent ici ont une histoire intéressante à raconter; nous espérons vous en partager quelques-unes dans les éditions de cet hiver. Ce mois-ci, Marko Shapiro partage généreusement avec nous sa collection de photos couvrant plus de 35 ans de vie à Verbier. Ici les photos en disent plus que les mots. THE VERBIER SWATCH SNOWPARK ON THE RISE! Swatch, the famous watchmaker, is now the snowpark’s main sponsor. Coinciding with the new

partnership comes the arrival of : « Share your action » : ride through the starting gate located below the snowpark hut, try your best trick on the intermediate level kicker and a few seconds later, take a look at your performance on the giant screen (3m X 4m). It’s free and available to everyone! This feature will be available throughout the winter.

In November, Verbier launched a contest asking the most imaginative artists to create a graphic identity for the snowpark. More than 300 entries were received. The winning entry was sent by Paul Dupont, from Cologny-les sables-blancs, who wins a season ski-pass. His design is now the new theme of the Verbier Swatch snowpark. www.verbierbooking.com

1936 BIÈRE A new local brew has recently been launched called, ‘1936 Bière’. The group

behind the exciting project decided that there was a market for a local beer after experiencing many visitors asking the same question, “what’s the local beer in Verbier”. 1936 is a ‘lager’ beer brewed here in Switzerland. The beer will be distributed by Soif &Thirst and will be available in numerous bars throughout Verbier. The company will also be producing 1936 wine. www.1936biere.com

THE TOUR DE FRANCE COMES TO VERBIER The 15th stage of the Tour de France will be coming to Verbier on July 19th 2009. A rest day will

follow in the region of Verbier / Val de Bagnes, Grand-Saint-Bernard and Martigny on Monday 20thJuly. The start of the 16th stage will then leave from Martigny to Bourg St Maurice the following day. The route will go via the Grand and Petit Saint Bernard - the Grand Saint Bernard being the highest point of the Tour de France 2009 (alt. 2473m) The reported budget for the organisation is approximately CHF 800’000 and will be funded by the Canton du Valais, the local Communes (Bagnes and Martigny), the Sociétés de Développement (tourist offices) and other sponsors. The goal of such an event is to take advantage of the huge media coverage to promote the region and the canton; the Tour de France is the 3rd biggest sporting event in the world. LAWRENCE DALLAGLIO CHALLENGE FOR CHARITY Last winter whilst on the Chaux Express chairlift, Warren Smith was given

a challenge by Lawrence Dallaglio – a former captain of the English Rugby team and part of the 2003 Rugby World Cup winning team. The challenge was to join Lawrence on an 8-day charity cycle event over the French Pyrenees. Many people from Verbier and British skiers who visit Verbier, donated to the charity and helped Warren and Lawrence contribute towards the total amount raised, £370,000 (CHF700,000). Lawrence and Warren would like to thank everyone in Verbier who supported them on what they describes as ‘their toughest sporting challenge to date’. MOLOK The Bagnes Commune has replaced

the old wooden rubbish huts with the ‘Molok’ buried container system. These containers allow for a separate collection of household waste, paper and glass. Individual containers are also available for used batteries, PET, aluminum and iron. In order to allow for the best possible waste processing, users are asked not to leave any other

rubbish outside of the Molok containers. Cardboard boxes, used home appliances, skis, accessories and any other rubbish can be deposited free of charge at the Verbier recycling center, during the following opening hours: Working days and Saturdays, from 10h00 to 12h00 and from 15h00 to 17h00. MOLOKLa Commune de Bagnes remplace les anciens cabanons en bois

par un système de conteneurs enterrés de type Molok. Ces derniers permettent une collecte séparée des ordures ménagères, du papier et du verre. Des collecteurs hors sol sont également à disposition pour les piles et accus, le PET, l'alu et le fer blanc. Dès lors, afin de permettre un traitement approprié des déchets, les usagers sont priés de ne pas déposer d'autres déchets aux abords ou en-dehors des Molok. Les cartons, appareils ménagers usagés, skis et accessoires et autres déchets peuvent être déposés gratuitement au centre de tri de Verbier aux heures d'ouverture suivantes : tous les jours ouvrables et samedis, de 10h00 à 12h00 et de 15h00 à 17h00. The Faction Collective - Verbier's own ski brand sold worldwide - are launching The Axis Project - designed to give artists the opportunity to present their work in an unusual medium, and strengthen the links between art, music and snowsports. Their first year presents work by Mike Ennen, an artist from Oregon, USA. Think you have what it takes to design a fantastic ski topsheet? Have a painting or drawing sitting in the corner that you think would look wicked strapped to your feet? Faction are also announcing the launch of their first ski design competition open to the public. Faction are looking for topsheet and base designs for their 2009/10 park ski, code-named the ‘Kennedy’. The theme for the skis is “urban jungle”. Artwork can be produced in any media – pen, pencil, paint, digital, the blood of a unicorn. All submissions should be emailed to info@factionskis.com and must be received by 1st January 2009. The designs will be published on www.thefactioncollective.com and voted by the public. The winner will be announced on 1st March 2009 with the ski going into production for the 2009/10 season. Master of lightPhotographer Mark ‘Marko’ Shapiro

A French magazine once described local photographer Marko Shapiro as “the Master of Light.” Powder Photo Annual, (1984) simply labelled his centre spread photo, “Best photo: Period.” After over 35 years of capturing mountain moments Marko still lives up to his renowned reputation and has numerous new projects in the pipeline.

Shapiro first arrived to Verbier from Canada in 1970 undertaking typical ski bum jobs to support his passion for photography. In 1974, Pascal Burri of the Fer a Cheval asked Shapiro to take a picture of him for a Swiss ski manufacturer. Impressed, the manufacturer bought the photo for roughly CHF 250. Shapiro never looked back and has been taking photos whilst witnessing the many changes in the art of mountain photography ever since. Marko generously shares with us some of his classic ski shots from the 70’s to today.

These days, Marko is working on a book featuring his extensive collection alongside writer, Jack Shaw. Marko’s story of his early days in Verbier living up in Clambin was recently featured in the American publication, ‘The Ski Journal’ and he has also released a calendar for 2009 of Verbier images.

Shapiro est arrivé à Verbier en provenance du Canada en 1970, et a commencé par des petits boulots typiques aux « ski bums », qui lui permettaient de se consacrer à sa passion pour la photographie. En 1974, Pascel Burri du Fer à Cheval, lui demanda de le prendre en photo pour un fabricant de skis suisse. Impressionné, le fabricant acheta la photo pour environ 250 francs suisses. Ce fut un tournant décisif pour Shapiro, qui n’a depuis plus arrêté de prendre des photos, tout en étant le témoin des nombreux changements survenus dans l’art de la photo de montagne. Marco partage généreusement avec nous quelques-unes de ses photos classiques de ski, des années 70 à nos jours.

Aujourd’hui, Marco travaille sur un livre présentant son importante collection en collaboration avec l’écrivain Jack Shaw. L’histoire de ses débuts, à l’époque où il vivait à Clambin, a été récemment publiée dans le magasine américain « The Ski Journal », et il vient également de publier un calendrier de photos de Verbier pour 2009.

Un magasine français a un jour qualifié le photographe Mark Shapiro, basé à Verbier, de « maître de la lumière ». Powder Photo Annual (1984), a simplement qualifié sa photo en double page centrale de « Meilleure photo. Point ! » Après plus de 35 ans passés à capturer des instants en montagne, Mark est toujours à la hauteur de sa réputation et a de nombreux nouveaux projets en vue.

You were one of the first action photographers to come to Verbier, how have things changed over the years?

Back in 1970, Verbier was purely and simply a skiers’ town with not a whole lot else happening. 38 years later, Verbier has grown in many ways and is now an internationally acclaimed resort with more skiers/snowboarders visiting each year. I was one of the first people to take up ski photography in Verbier during the 70’s. I could almost be considered as a pioneer for mountain photography as we know it today.

Looking back, what are the favorite moments of your career?There are so many great moments! One I can think of is when

my friend and well known skier, John Falkiner, and I were working together and we found out our fathers new each other when they were prisoners of war during WWII.

The article in ‘The Ski Journal’, what is it about?The article by Jack Shaw is about Team Clambin, (John

Falkiner, Ace Kvale, and me) and our many friends from all four corners of the ski world. The piece looks at who we are and were from the 70's, to present time and how we have influenced the ski world with our talents and lifestyle. The article is about 15 pages long, using archive pictures from the 70's to present.

You’re also working on a book?Writer, Jack Shaw is the mastermind behind the book. It will be

about my vast collection of pictures and me. The book will involve a lot of bits and pieces from the many people I know and have known over the years. It should be full of humor too.

When did you decide to work on the new 2009 Calendar?A lot of locals have asked me over the years about doing a

calendar. Using the idea from my exhibition on the streets in Verbier during summer 2005, I decided to use the same theme and use pictures that showed the region of Verbier/Bagnes with activity during the four seasons. Like the street exhibition, the calendar has gone down very well with locals and tourists alike.

The calendar "Picture Verbier 2009" is available at the Naville in the Place Centrale, Medran Sports, Mountain Air Sports, No.1 Sports & Oreiller Sports. Custom prints of these images and many others from Marko's extensive archive are available on command.

Tu as été un des premiers photographes d’action à venir t’installer à Verbier, comment les choses ont-elles changé au fil des ans ?

A l’époque, en 1970, Verbier était simplement une ville de skieurs, dans laquelle il ne se passait pas grand chose de plus. 38 années plus tard, Verbier s’est développée sur de nombreux points et est aujourd’hui une station reconnue sur le plan international, accueillant de plus en plus de skieurs et surfeurs chaque année. J’ai été l’une des premières personnes à me consacrer à la photo de ski à Verbier dans les années 70. On pourrait presque me considérer comme l’un de pionniers de la photo de montagne telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui.

En rétrospective, quels ont été les meilleurs moments de ta carrière ?Il y a eu trop de bons moments entre ma carrière passée et celle

d’aujourd’hui pour que je me souvienne d’un moment en particulier. Un exemple qui me vient à l’esprit est le jour où mon ami et célèbre skieur John Falkiner et moi-même étions en train de travailler ensemble, lorsque nous nous rendîmes compte que nos pères se connaissaient du temps où ils étaient prisonniers de guerre durant la deuxième guerre mondiale.

De quel sujet traite l’article qui est publié dans “The Ski Journal”?L’article, écrit par Jack Shaw, traite du “team Clambin” (John Falkiner,

Ace Kvale, et nos nombreux amis venant des quatre coins du monde). Quand as-tu décidé de travailler sur un projet de calendrier pour 2009 ?

De nombreux indigènes me demandaient depuis des années pourquoi je n’éditais pas un calendrier. En reprenant l’idée de mon exposition dans la rue durant l’été 2005, j’ai décidé d’utiliser le même thème et de sélectionner des photos qui montrent la région de Verbier/Bagnes, des paysages avec des activités pendant les quatre saisons. Au même titre que l’exposition dans la rue, le calendrier a beaucoup plu, autant aux indigènes qu’aux touristes.

Ah yes, you understand, skiing, great skiing awaits you, over 3 or 6 days, from Zermatt to Chamonix and all by

helicopter. But let’s be clear, there is no question of setting down just anywhere, heli-skiing in Switzerland is strictly regulated. However, with a judicial combination of authorised setting-down points and classic downhill itineraries, the splendours of the scenery of the imposing glaciers and awesome mountain ranges can become accessible to the skier not yet acquainted with skinning.

The circuit starts at Zermatt, the Mecca of mountaineering, nestled at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn. The first set-down point is on Monte Rosa at over 4000 metres. At this altitude the air is 40% thinner than at sea level, as our bodies quickly remind us...The descent, not very steep, unfolds in scenery accentuated by a succession of summits of over 4000m which we are able to savour for the entire 18 km distance and 2200 m altitude change on the extraordinary Monte Rosa glacier.

The following day we leave Zermatt for an adventure on the Italian side via the “Petit Cervin” and the “Col Cimes Blanches”. The helicopter picks us up again at Champoluc and sets us down on the Tête de Valpelline, on the Swiss-Italian border. From the air and from the summit the view of the peaks of the north faces of the Matterhorn and the Dent d’Hérens take your breath away. The descent down the Ferpècle glacier, at the foot of the Dent Blanche, is considered as one of the most beautiful wildernesses in the Alps. It unfolds between glacial seracs and crevices and leads into the far end of the small valley which bears the same name. After a short journey by minibus to the Hotel de la Sage our bags are already waiting for us. This hotel is over one hundred years old, sympathetically and comfortably renovated, welcoming

Eh oui, vous avez bien compris, du ski, du grand ski vous attend pendant 3 ou 6 jours, de Zermatt à Chamonix et tout ça héliporté.

Mais attention, il n’est pas question de se poser n'importe où à la sauvette; l'héliski en suisse est fortement réglementé. Néanmoins, en combinant judicieusement le choix des déposes et les itinéraires de descentes classiques, le skieur non-initié à la peau de phoque a accès à ces paysages glaciaires grandioses et ces chaînes de montagnes impressionnantes.

Notre péripétie débute à Zermatt, haut lieu de l'alpinisme, blotti au pied du majestueux Cervin. Nous posons une première fois au Mont Rose à plus de 4000 mètres. A cette altitude, l'air est 40% plus rare qu'au niveau de la mer, rapidement notre organisme nous le rappelle... La descente, pas très raide se déroule dans un décor rehaussé par le défilé d'une vingtaine de sommets de plus de 4000m que l’on peut savourer tout au long des 2200 m de dénivellation et 18 km, sur l’extraordinaire glacier du Mont Rose.

Le jour suivant nous quittons Zermatt pour une escapade sur le versant italien, par le Petit Cervin et le col des Cimes blanches. L'hélicoptère nous reprend à Champoluc pour nous déposer sur la Tête de Valpelline, à la frontière entre Suisse et Italie. En vol et du sommet la vue sur les a pic des faces Nord du Cervin et de la Dent d’Hérens sont saisissants. La descente du glacier de Ferpècle, au pied de la Dent Blanche, compte parmi les plus belles et sauvages des Alpes. Elle se déroule entre séracs et crevasses et conduit vers le fond du vallon du même nom. En minibus nous rejoignons l’hôtel de la Sage où nos effets personnels, nous attendent. Cet hôtel, plus que centenaire, rénové avec charme et confort, nous accueille dans un cadre alpin magnifique. Le village de la Sage a su garder son cachet et ses traditions; quelques aînés portent le costume traditionnel et les indigènes parlent encore le patois, dialecte franco-provençal similaire à celui du Val d’Aoste. Ici le temps semble s'être arrêté !

Le lendemain, parti d’Arolla, l’hélicoptère nous pose au sommet du Pigne d'Arolla à 3796 m. Le panorama à 360 degrés du Cervin au Mont-Blanc,

guests to the magnificent Alpine setting. The village of La Sage has managed to preserve its character and traditional ways; some of the elders still wear traditional costumes and the locals still speak in patois, a French-Provincial dialect similar to that spoken in the Val d’Aoste. Here it seems as if time has stood still.

The next day, departing from Arolla, the helicopter sets down on the summit of the Pigne d’Arolla at 3796 m. The 360 degree panorama from the Matterhorn to Mont-Blanc, from the Bernese Alps to the Gran Paradiso is so spectacular it almost makes your head spin. It is at this point that the guide suggests an original alternative: a descent which goes by the name of Tsijiore Nouve. This is an unofficial itinerary which may only be taken by advanced skiers wishing to avoid the usual, easy trail and get a taste of a what it truly means to be in the high mountains: with steep, narrow slopes between seracs and cliffs.... This unique day ends with one last set-down on the Rosablanche returning to Verbier via the lift system of the Four Valleys.

Verbier, European capital of off-piste skiing is a freeride ‘must’, synonymous with the Xtreme, Verbier Ride and Da Fat.... The Val de Bagnes resort is equally well- renowned for its lively nightlife, here the days and nights move to the rhythm of winter sports and parties. No white night for us though! At break of day, whilst Verbier is still asleep, the humming of a rotor can be heard: it is our B3 helicopter coming to collect us at the Croix de Coeur for one last day of heli-skiing. Moments later, as the first rays of sun caress the summit of the Petit Combin, we are quietly making the first traces in untouched snow before being picked up one last time to go to the Trient glacier at 3300m which opens up into the Valley of Chamonix. At the mountain pass we stop to taste a local delicacy, washed down with a bottle of quality Fendant wine that our guide produces from the depths of his backpack in honour of the occasion. Happy and relaxed, we breathe in the pure, reinvigorating air for one last time. Then, with serenity and satisfaction we embark upon our final 2000 m descent, which takes us to the foot of Mont Blanc.

No plan is ever a guaranteed success but, in our case, this one absolutely was and will remain forever engraved in our memories, a sublime and fascinating adventure.

C’est un itinéraire sauvage réservé aux bons skieurs qui veulent s’éloigner de la facile voie normale et goûter à une ambiance vraiment haute montagne: pentes raides et étroites entre séracs et falaises.... Cette journée unique se termine avec une dernière dépose à la Rosablanche et le retour à Verbier par les installations des 4 vallées.

Verbier, capitale européenne du ski hors piste représente un must en matière de freeride. Elle est synonyme de X-treme, Verbier Ride ou encore Da Fat.... La station bagnarde est également connue des lieues à la ronde pour sa vie nocturne animée, ici les jours et les nuits sont rythmés par la glisse et la fête. Pour nous cependant, point de nuit blanche, et au petit matin, alors que Verbier est encore endormi, un bruit de vrombissement de rotor se fait entendre: c’est notre hélicoptère B3 qui vient nous prendre à la Croix de Coeur pour une ultime journée d'héliski. Quelques instants plus tard, alors que les premiers rayons du soleil caressent le sommet du petit Combin, nous dessinons, discrètement dans une neige immaculée, les premières traces avant une dernière reprise pour le glacier du Trient à 3300 m. qui va nous ouvrir les portes de la Vallée de Chamonix. Au col, nous dégustons une spécialité locale arrosé d’un bon fendant que notre guide sort du fond de son sac pour l’occasion. Heureux et détendus, nous respirons une dernière fois cet air pur et revivifiant. Nous engageons alors avec satisfaction et sérénité, une ultime descente de 2000 m. pour arriver au pied du Mont Blanc.

Un projet n’est jamais réussi d’avance, mais dans notre cas, il a été une réussite totale et demeurera à jamais gravé dans nos mémoires à l’instar d’une aventure fascinante et sublime.

BroomHockeyOver the last few years, almost unnoticed

amongst the more well-known winter sports, broom hockey has experienced a revival in Verbier. A growing number of broomers have been 'battling-on' every week at the sports centre's ice rink. So what is broom hockey? Andy Timmins, a regular broom hockey afficiando, described it as ‘pure stick-swinging-ice-sliding chaos'. Andy Timmins, amateur régulier de ce sport, le décrit comme du "pur balancé de bâton avec glissade sur glace à la sauce chaos". Pour moi cela ressemble plutôt à du Laurel et Hardy sur glace, une drôle de bâtonnade.

THE GAME Broom hockey is played with two teams, each with a goal keeper. The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. Goals are scored by hitting the ball into your opponent's net using your 'broom'. A broom has a long wooden shaft with a small rubber triangular head on one end which is used to hit a mini-football around the ice. Tactics and play are similar to those used in the sport of ice hockey and field hockey. Unlike ice hockey, players wear trainers and there are virtually no rules. No skating skills are required.

THE KIT Brooms are provided. It is advisable to bring your own helmet but one can be borrowed from the Sport Centre. Gloves are a must. Knee and elbow padding are recommened but not essential.

THE PLACE AND TIME Ice rink at the Verbier Sport Centre. Please be suited, booted and ready to play from 8.30pm every Thursday during the winter season.

PRICE 100 Sfr for the season (around 20 games). Although please come and enjoy a discovery game for free at any time.

This is a sport that everyone should experience, if only once. People of any ability can enjoy the general humour, frustration and revelry of 'brooming'. It is a chance to play a team sport, get a sweat-on, and enjoy a well-earned post match beverage.

LE JEU le ballon-balais se joue à deux équipes, chacune avec un gardien. L'objectif est de marquer plus de but que son adversaire. Les buts se marquent en mettant la balle dans le filet opposé à l'aide d'un balais. Ce dernier a un long manche en bois terminé par une petite tête triangulaire utilisée pour frapper un mini ballon de football. Les tactiques et le jeu sont similaires à ceux pratiqués dans le hockey sur glace et sur gazon. Par contre les joueurs portent des baskets et il n'y a virtuellement pas de rêgles. Aucun équipement de patinage n'est nécessaire.

LE MATERIEL Les balais sont fournis. Il est conseillé d'emmener votre propre casque mais vous pouvez en emprunter au Centre Sportif. Les gants sont précieux et les protections pour les genoux et les coudes recommandées mais pas obligatoires.

OÙ ET QUAND A la patinoire de Verbier. Soyez équipés et prêts à jouer dès 20h30 tous les jeudis de la saison d'hiver.

Andre Sommer has proved his dedication to his passion of freeriding by spending the last ten years persuing an

endless winter. Whilst most of us are sad to see the snow melt at the end of a season, we are also happy to see the onset of spring and summer. Not for Swiss Freerider Andre, who is also the Altitude Snowboard School Director. As soon as the snow melts in Verbier, Andre packs up his board and heads straight to Argentina, a country with which he has a long standing relationship. His recent marriage to his Argentinian wife Sofia cements his ties with the South American country that provides his winter playground during the European summer months. The couple, along with his brother and some friends decked out a huge coach as the ultimate winter tour bus exploring ski areas of the Andes accompanied along the way by various friends and photographers.

Freeriding isn’t just a hobby for Andre: last year he competed on the Freeride World Tour and is a valued member of the International Nidecker team. Unlike Andre, most keen skiers and boarders don’t have the opportunity to ride year round. Most of us come back from a summer away eager to hit the slopes at full force again, which can often be a shock to the muscles used on the slopes. It is easy to rush up the mountain without being prepared, Andre reminds us of some safety points.

How was your last winter?Last season was huge for me, I was invited to join the Freeride

World Tour. I was fortunate enough to visit Russia, the USA and other European resorts. The tour ended up with me taking part in the Verbier Xtreme – a dream of mine after many years of watching the event.

What advice would you give to snow sport enthusiasts looking to improve freeriding skills?

After months away from the sport, check your gear, whether it’s ski or snowboard equipment, make sure it’s in good condition. Check your bindings - if you are freeriding you can set your bindings more to the back and make sure you have the right choice of ski or board. Also, simple things like watching other

l’hiver sans fin. Quand nous sommes tristes de voir fondre la neige en fin de saison, nous nous réjouissons en même temps du retour du printemps puis de l’été. Mais pas André, freerider suisse et directeur de l’Altitude Snowboard School. Dès que la neige quitte nos pentes, il emballe ses planches et part droit vers l’Argentine, un pays avec qui il entretient une longue relation. Son récent mariage avec sa femme argentine Sofia a cimenté son alliance avec ce pays Sud-Américain qui lui fournit son terrain de jeu hivernal durant l’été européen. Sofia, André, son frère et quelques amis, ont transformé un énorme bus en maison pour s’offrir un grandiose tour des Andes, à la découverte des stations de skis locales. Ils ont été accompagnés dans leur trip par d’autres amis et des photographes.

Le freeride n’est pas juste un hobby pour André; la saison dernière il a participé au Freeride World Tour et est membre du International Nidecker Team. Au contraire d’André, la plupart des skieurs et boardeurs n’ont pas l’opportunité de pratiquer leur sport durant toute l’année. La plupart d’entre nous reviennent gonflés à bloc de la saison chaude pour reconquérir les pistes, ce qui peut souvent être un choc pour les muscles utilisés sur les planches. André nous rappelle quelques points importants pour notre sécurité au retour sur les pistes.

Comment était ton dernier hiver ?La dernière saison fut énorme pour moi, après toutes ces saisons de ride

cela c’est débloqué et j’ai été invité au Freeride World Tour. J’ai été assez chanceux pour visiter la Russie, les USA et plusieurs stations européennes. Cela c’est terminé avec le Verbier Xtreme, un rêve pour moi après toutes ces années à regarder l’événement.

Quels conseils donnes-tu aux amateurs de glisse cherchant à améliorer leur niveau freeride ?

Après des mois loin de ce sport, vérifiez votre matériel, que ce soit des skis ou un snowboard, et soyez sûrs qu’il est en bonne état. Contrôlez vos fixations, si c’est pour du freeride, vous pouvez les régler légèrement plus sur l’arrière. Choisissez également le bon type de matériel. Il y a également des choses simples, comme observer les autres riders et vous demander pourquoi untel a tourné à tel endroit. Cela peut vous aider à améliorer votre propre descente de la montagne.

What safety tips can you offer? Most people know about avalanche transceivers… Invest the

money and get one and then make sure you know how to use it! Train three or four times a month. Apart from this, just try to learn to listen to your feelings and don’t feel stupid if you turn around and decide not to go down something if you’re unsure of it or feel scared.

How important is the equipment? It’s one of those things, we spend a lot of money on: helmets,

knee protection, safety shorts, avalanche transceiver etc..... then we hope to never need to use them! It is important - it’s better to be safe than sorry.

When you’re competing and freeriding are you ever worried about the possibility of an avalanche?

I always try to expect an avalanche, because this makes me more aware and think about my possibilities of avoiding a bad situation if I unfortunately get in one.

I was in an avalanche last year in Davos. I checked the conditions, but it still happened, and I only managed to ride away from it because I had checked the area before I made my descent and worked out a ‘safe’ area to the side of the avalanche.

What are the biggest mistakes that people make when going off piste?

Following other peoples’ tracks and thinking they are safe and not checking the face and the snow conditions. There is never a guarantee that there is nothing sliding or happening, but it is smart to think carefully to reduce risk.

Most of the ski schools in Verbier and the Bureau des Guides offer avalanche safety courses and the ski shops can check your equipment and provide safety gear.

Quels conseils de sécurité peux-tu donner ?La plupart des gens connaissent les détecteurs de victimes d’avalanche

(DVA). Procurez-vous en un et soyez certains de savoir l’utiliser ! Entraînez-vous trois ou quatre fois par mois. Sinon, apprenez à écouter votre intuition et ne vous sentez pas stupide si vous rebroussez chemin et ne descendez pas une pente incertaine ou effrayante.

Quelle importance revêt l’équipement ?Nous dépensons beaucoup d’argent pour les casques, genouillères,

protections dorsales, DVA, etc.... en espérant n’en avoir jamais besoin ! C’est important, c’est mieux d’être en sécurité que désolé.

Quand tu es engagé sur une pente, que ce soit pour toi ou en compétition, es-tu toujours inquiet d’une possible avalanche ?

J’essaye toujours de m’attendre à une avalanche, parce que cela me rend plus conscient et me donne la possibilité de penser aux moyens de me sortir d’une mauvaise situation hypothétique. J’ai frayé avec une avalanche l’année passée à Davos. J’avais étudié les conditions mais c’est quand même arrivé, j’ai juste évité le pire parce que j’avais observé le coin avant de descendre et j’ai pu me réfugier dans un endroit plus sûr sur le côté.

Quelles sont les plus grosses erreurs que les gens font en pratiquant le hors-piste ?

Suivre les autres traces en pensant qu’elles sont sûres et ne pas contrôler les conditions de neige. Il n’y a jamais de garantie que rien de mauvais n’arrivera, mais il est plus intelligent d’utiliser son cerveau et de diminuer les risques autant que possible.

La plupart des écoles de ski et des bureaux des guides de Verbier offrent des cours d’avalanche et les magasins de sports peuvent contrôler votre équipement et vous fournir du matériel adapté pour votre sécurité.

Knee InjurySkiing is, by far, the most popular winter sport. Last winter

skiers in their thousands hurtled down the snow-covered slopes. The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention estimates that the average number of accidents over the past five years stands at approximately 70,000 (not including the large number of foreign visitors who injure themselves on Swiss slopes). That said, skiing does not however hold the accolade for being the most dangerous sport. The principal victims? Beginners. They are twice as likely to have an accident as those who know how to plant their poles.

Ils présentent deux fois plus de risques d'accidents que ceux qui manient bien le planter du bâton.

KNEE SPRAINS : RISK NO 1Where a sport involves using every part of the body it goes

without saying that no articulation is completely safe. The knee however, takes the prize for being the first joint to give way. In fact, almost one third of skiing accidents are knee-sprains.

All it takes is one bad turn, crossed skis or an insignificant fall, the binding resists and fails to release, the knee locks and twists. At best the ligaments are stretched, this is a mild sprain. This type of sprain constitutes not less than 16 % of ski-related injuries.

If the twist is particularly violent, the anterior ligaments give way. A painful tear can be heard, the knee becomes unstable and cannot carry weight. This is an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprain, which alone counts for 14 % of accidents. When this happens, there is only one way back down: on a stretcher!

L'ENTORSE DU GENOU : LE RISQUE N°1Avec un sport, qui engage autant le corps entier, inutile de

préciser qu'aucune articulation n'est à l'abri. La palme revient au genou ,qui est la première articulation à trinquer. En effet, l'entorse du genou constitue près du tiers des accidents chez les skieurs.

Il suffit d'un virage mal engagé, de skis qui se croisent ou d'une chute anodine, la fixation résiste et ne saute pas, du coup, le genou se bloque et se tord. Au mieux, les ligaments sont étirés, c'est l'entorse simple. Qui constitue pas moins de 16 % des pathologies du ski.

Si la torsion est particulièrement violente, ce sont les ligaments antérieurs soutenant l'articulation qui lâchent. Un douloureux craquement se fait entendre, le genou devient instable, vous ne tenez plus debout…. Là, c'est la rupture du ligament croisé antérieur (LCA), qui constitue à elle seule, 14 % des accidents. Dès lors, plus qu'une solution : rentrer en civière !

THE ACL SPRAIN : A SERIOUS INJURYThe anterior cruciate ligament sprain is an injury which can have

major consequences:

1. Persistent instability and weakness causing discomfort and anxiety.

2. Potential early onset of arthritis in the knee.3. Possible surgical intervention followed by a long period of

rehabilitation in order to be able to play certain pivotal sports (football, tennis…).

WORTH KNOWING Women over the age of 25 are three times as likely as men to fall victim to an ACL sprain. Why? A woman’s anatomy has a wider pelvis size affecting the ‘Q’ angle and it has a greater laxity of the ligaments which makes women more susceptible to this type of injury.

Just ten years ago or so, fractures were the no.1 risk when skiing. This was largely because boots were too low and did not provide sufficient protection for the legs. Since then great progress has been made in boot technology. Higher and more rigid, they now hold the ankle firm and transfer the rotary energy higher up the leg. Suddenly the force of the shock is transmitted upwards to the knee.

THE GUILTY PARTY? Bindings. It is a proven fact that one sprain in two can be attributed to badly-set bindings:

Too loose a setting and it’s an untimely release and a guaranteed fall! Too tight and the ski stays on during a fall and the knee twists.

THERE ARE THREE GOLDEN RULES FOR MAKING SURE YOU ARE CORRECTLY ATTACHED TO YOUR SKIS:

1. Have your bindings adjusted and set by a professional in accordance with the safety norms currently in force.

2. Binding settings must be tailored to the individual. The calculation takes into account sex, weight, height and skiing ability.

3. Do not have skis which are too long! The longer the ski the greater the pressure on the knee.

LE LCA : UN TRAUMATISME SÉVÈREL'entorse avec rupture des ligaments croisés est une pathologie qui

peut présenter de lourdes conséquences :

1. Une instabilité persistante et une fragilité qui peut gêner et engendrer une appréhension.

2. Une éventuelle évolution vers une arthrose précoce du genou.3. Possibilité d'une intervention chirurgicale suivie d'une longue

période de rééducation si l'on veut reprendre certains sports pivot (football, tennis…).

A SAVOIR Les femmes de plus de 25 ans sont 3 fois plus nombreuses que les hommes à être touchées par le LCA. La raison ? Des causes anatomiques (jambes en X, grande souplesse ligamentaire) qui les rendent plus sujettes à ce type de lésions.

Il y a encore quelques dizaines d'années, les fractures étaient le risque N°1 au ski. La faute aux chaussures qui étaient trop basses et qui ne protégeaient pas suffisamment les jambes. Depuis, de gros progrès ont été faits sur la technicité des chaussures.Plus hautes et plus rigides, elles bloquent désormais la cheville et transfèrent les forces de rotation plus haut sur la jambe. Du coup, la traumatologie s'est répercutée au niveau du genou.

LE COUPABLE ? Les fixations. Pour preuve, plus d'une entorse sur deux est imputable à un mauvais réglage des fixations.Un réglage trop faible, c'est le déchaussement intempestif et la chute assurés ! Trop fort et le ski reste fixé aux pieds pendant la chute, et le genou se tord.

TROIS RÈGLES D'OR POUR S'ASSURER QUE VOUS ÊTES BIEN ACCROCHÉS À VOS SKIS :

1. Faites régler et ajuster vos fixations à chaque saison par un professionnel selon les normes de sécurité en vigueur.

2. Le réglage doit être personnalisé. Il se fait en fonction de votre sexe, poids, taille et votre profil de skieur.

3. N'ayez pas des skis trop longs ! Plus le ski est long, plus les forces exercées sur le genou sont importantes.

STEAMED GINGER CAKE WITH VELVETY CARAMEL SAUCEServes 4

Vanilla ice cream is the perfect pairing for this dessert. Don’t be shy with the caramel sauce when plating. The cake can also be steamed as one whole cake, (any oven-proof bowl will do), prep it the same as you would the ramekins, as described later on. It is best to steam the whole cake in a stovetop pot, reversing a smaller bowl on the bottom, creating a platform for your cake bowl. Fill the pot with a few inches of water, cover and steam for 1½ hours. Be sure to check water levels occasionally to prevent burning the bottom of your pot!

285g white flour2tsp baking powder1tsp bicarbonate soda½tsp salt3tsp ground ginger1½ tsp ground cinnamon1tsp ground nutmeg½tsp ground cloves3’ piece of fresh ginger, grated finely2 eggs, beaten200mls dark molasses 3tbsp melted butter110mls whole milkExtra butter and sugar to coat 4 ramekins

Heat oven to 210’C. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl. Mix all wet ingredients in another bowl. Slowly combine until well blended and smooth. Prepare your ramekins by coating them with butter and then sugar. Fill each ramekin ¾ full, do not overfill as it will spill out when steaming. Place filled ramekins in a baking dish, boil the kettle, put the baking dish in the oven and fill the baking dish with the boiled water until it reaches ½ the way up the ramekins. Cover with baking paper and foil and bake for 25-30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool on rack. Be careful when taking foil top off, there is a lot of steam under there and you could get burnt. Loosen the sides with a paring knife and ‘unmold’ on to a plate. Garnish with caramel sauce and ice cream. Yummy!

Caramel Sauce375g white sugarWater310mls heavy cream

Place sugar in a heavy saucepan. Cover with water and cook over low heat until sugar dissolves, swirling the pan but never stirring! Increase the heat and boil until the sugar caramelises and turns a deep mahogany colour. Never take your eyes off boiling sugar, it is very dangerous and can burn in the blink of an eye. Remove from heat, and standing back, gradually pour the cream in. It will bubble up violently so pour carefully and slowly. Simmer the sauce, now you can stir until the caramel dissolves and becomes smooth and thick. It can be used immediately or cooled and refrigerated until needed. If too thick, soften over low heat, thinning with cream if necessary. This sauce can be stored indefinitely in the fridge.

GÂTEAU DE GINGEMBRE CUIT À LA VAPEUR ACCOMPAGNÉ DE SA SAUCE DE CARAMEL VELOUTÉPour 4 personnesLe partenaire parfait de ce dessert est la glace à la vanille. Ne vous retenez pas quand vous versez la sauce caramel sur les assiettes. A la place de faire 4 gâteaux séparés dans les ramequins comme décrit ci-dessous, vous pouvez également faire un gâteau et le cuire à la vapeur. N’importe quel bol qui résiste à la chaleur du four fera l’affaire et la préparation est la même. Il est préférable de faire la cuisson à la vapeur d’un seul gâteau sur une plaque de la cuisinière en plaçant son bol sur un autre plus petit bol renversé pour créer une plate-forme dans une grande casserole. Mettez une dizaine de centimètres d’eau dans la casserole, couvrez et cuisez à la vapeur pour 1½ heure. Contrôlez régulièrement le niveau d’eau pour éviter de brûler le fond de votre casserole!

Chauffez le four à 210ºC. Mélangez tous les ingrédients secs dans un bol et les ingrédients liquides dans un autre. Amalgamez le tout graduellement pour obtenir une pâte homogène et lisse. Beurrez les ramequins et enduisez- les de sucre. Partagez le mélange entre les ramequins, les remplissant aux trois quarts de leur profondeur, ne les remplissez pas trop sinon ils déborderont durant la cuisson. Placez les ramequins dans un plat à four ou à rôtir profond et versez dans ce plat de l’eau bouillante à mi-hauteur des ramequins, enfournez. Couvrez d’une feuille de papier à four et une feuille d’aluminium et faites cuire pendant 25-30 minutes. Sortez du four et laissez refroidir sur une grille. Faites attention en ôtant la feuille d’aluminium, toute la vapeur enfermée dessous risque de vous brûler. Libérez les bords à l’aide d’un couteau à parer et démoulez sur un plat. Garnissez avec la sauce caramel et la glace vanille. Délicieux!

Sauce Caramel375g sucre cristalliséEau310 ml crème épaisse

Mettez le sucre dans une casserole à fond lourd. Couvrez d’eau et faites cuire à feu doux jusqu’à dissolution du sucre, tournoyez la casserole, mais ne remuez jamais le liquide! Augmentez le feu et portez à ébullition jusqu’à la caramélisation de sucre et coloration d’acajou. Ne quittez jamais de vue le sucre bouillant, il est très dangereux et peut tourner en un clin d’oeil. Otez du feu et, en vous tenant un peu en retrait, ajoutez la crème graduellement. Le liquide montera en ébullition de manière violente donc versez la crème lentement et soigneusement. Faites mijoter la sauce, remuant jusqu’à dissolution du caramel et à l’obtention d’une sauce lisse et épaisse. Vous pouvez l’employer immédiatement ou la conserver au froid pour quand vous en aurez besoin. Si, le moment venu, la sauce est trop épaisse, vous pouvez la faire fondre à feu doux en délayant avec de la crème si nécessaire. Vous pouvez conserver cette sauce au frigo pour une période indéterminée.

When it comes to deciding what to dip in your chocolate fondue, many things should come to mind. Traditionally, it is eaten with fresh seasonal fruit but don’t be shy to spice up the mix a bit. Why not try dipping dried apricots, figs or candied ginger. Perhaps some salty tortilla chips, pretzels or cubed pound cake. Have fun with the kids and dip marshmallows, gummy bears, mini candy canes or caramel squares. Just remember that everything tastes great with chocolate!

225mls heavy cream340g dark chocolate (preferably +70% cocoa), broken into piecesPinch of saltVariety of things to dip (see above)Aztec Flavouring½ tsp cinnamon, pinch of cayenne, ¼ tsp ground black pepper and allspice, ½ vanilla bean pod (seeds only), ½ tsp instant coffeeBoozy Flavouring:2 tbsp of either Baileys Irish Cream, Grand Mariner, Amaretto, Kirsch or Frangelico

Warm the cream gently, over medium heat, to a simmer in a pot. If adding the Aztec Flavouring to this fondue, add extra ingredients now. Add salt. Remove from heat and add chocolate pieces, whisking until smooth. If adding the Boozy Flavouring to this fondue, add it now. Transfer to fondue pot (the flame should be low) or hold it in a Bain Marie until ready to serve. Place selected dippers around the fondue pot and enjoy!

FONDUE AU CHOCOLATPour 4 personnesQuand il est question du choix des aliments pour tremper dans votre fondue au chocolat, pleins d’idées devraient vous venir à l’esprit. Traditionnellement, elle se mange avec les fruits de saison mais n’hésitez pas à ajouter du piment au mélange. Pourquoi ne pas essayer d’y tremper des abricots secs, des figues ou quelques chips tortillas, bretzels ou cubes de gâteau aux fruits secs. Amusez-vous avec les enfants et trempez des marshmallows, gummi bears, bâtonnets de sucre d’orge ou carrés de caramel. Vous le savez bien, tout va avec le chocolat !

Dans une casserole chauffez la crème à feu doux jusqu’à ce qu’elle mijote doucement. Si vous prévoyez l’arôme Aztec ajoutez les ingrédients additionnels à ce stade. Ajoutez le sel. Otez du feu et ajoutez le chocolat concassé. Fouettez jusqu’à ce que le mélange devienne onctueux. Si vous préparez un arôme alcoolisé, c’est le moment de l’ajouter. Transférez le tout dans un caquelon (flamme douce) ou gardez en bain-marie jusqu’à ce que vous soyez prêt à passer à table. Arrangez votre sélection à tremper autour le caquelon et bon appétit!!

WineSwiss wines are proved to be the best

in the World. Truth is often stranger than fiction. When Swiss wines took the top places in a major blind tasting competition in Italy earlier this year, I had to agree. Les vins suisses, les meilleurs du monde ! La

vérité est souvent plus étrange que la fiction. Quand les vins suisses ont pris les meilleures places dans une importante dégustation à l'aveugle cette année en Italie, j'ai bien dû l'accepter.

At the Villa d´Este in Italy the “Grand Jury European” (GJE) staged a blind tasting of Shiraz from France, Italy,

Switzerland, Australia and USA. Tasting the 2001 wines where some of the top taste experts from around the world, which included three “best wine waiters of the world”.

Set up in 1996, the Grand Jury European brings together the best wine critics worldwide and offers an alternative way of classifying great wines of the world. Its members are from at least six different countries of the European Union including Switzerland and meet regularly to blind taste under strict legal control.

For this tasting in Italy, 35 of the best shiraz from all over the world were presented including Hermitage “La Chapelle” de Jaboulet, “La Turque” de Guigal, “Les Ruchets” from Colombo, “Sine Qua Non Midnight Oil from Kranki in California and Syrah “La Planeta” from Italy.

Amongst this selection of stunning wine world heavy weights, where placed five Swiss syrah, four from the Valais and one from Vaud. To the absolute surprise of all, including our local wine makers, two of the Valaisan contenders placed first and second and not less than five Swiss wines where in the top nine places.

Syrah “Veilles Vignes” from Simon Maye & Fils in St Pierre de Clages took the top place followed by “Léncre de la Terre” from Claudy Clavien in Miege. The wines where considered to be technically perfect, showing a fine balance between freshness and maturity. Third place was also a Swiss wine from the Vaud, “St Saphorin” Caves des Roi at La Tour de Peilz.

This event has caused much reaction throughout the wine world but particularly in America where Robert Parker as until recently dominated the wine critic world. The impact for Swiss wines in undeniable, “the whole world wants our wines now”. So how will this affect our local makers? The quantities here are small compared to the vineyards of the rest of the world, so the effect of supply and demand will surely see these wines become rare and expensive. Hopefully we will still see them in our local restaurants and shops, but the sales will be brisk, so be sure to shop early.

Syrah or Shiraz as is it more commonly known is a perfect wine for serving with lamb and turkey so a wonderful choice for the Christmas table. What better way to celebrate with your friends than to offer one of the best wines in the world, especially when is comes from just down the road. So Merry Christmas to you all, happy tasting!

La 3ème place revient aussi à un vin suisse, vaudois plus exactement, le "St-Saphorin" des Caves des Rois à la Tour-de-Peilz.

Cet événement a provoqué de nombreuses réactions dans le milieu du vin, particulièrement en Amérique où Robert Parker a dominé jusqu'à récemment la critique vinicole. L'impact pour les vins suisses est indéniable, "le monde entier veut notre vin à présent". Alors comment cela va-t-il affecter nos vignerons locaux ? Les quantités produites ici sont petites en comparaison des vignobles étrangers, les effets de l'offre et de la demande vont donc sûrement rendre ces vins plus rares et plus chers. Verbier based ski racer, Angus Morison, overcame some incredibly hard challenges to come out on top and

win the British TV series, ‘Unbreakable’. He tells us about his amazing experience that took him to some of world’s most hostile locations.

“Unbreakable felt like living hell for the most part, but I look back on it and realise it was one of the best times of my life. It was an amazing adventure with some great people.”

Unbreakable, is an eight-part series was filmed over four continents and delivers an onslaught of physical and mental pressure that only the toughest will survive. The toughest turned out to be Scottish born skier, Angus Morison. Angus is the also the British SkiX Champion and has spent the last ten years living and training in Verbier.

Unbreakable took eight intrepid volunteers on a gruelling global trail that saw them undergo a series of demanding challenges. These included: intensive training with the Navy Seals, surviving the Guyanan Jungle, braving the Norwegian Arctic and enduring extreme military exercises with the South African Special Forces. Some of the world’s toughest military selection tasks tested them to the limit along with learning to survive in the world’s harshest environments. Along the way they had to wrestle anacondas in the jungle, dive through ice holes into arctic water, be buried up to their necks in the Sahara desert, escape from a sinking helicopter, battle to save a sinking ship and endure an extreme Afrikaans bush trial with South African Special Forces.

What made you decide to go on Unbreakable?I thought it would be a great chance to travel, to meet like-

minded people, to have a good time doing sport and to challenge myself.

What was the toughest part of the experience?A couple of times I got really ill, (once due to heat exhaustion

and once due to food poisoning) I knew that if I didn’t get better

meilleurs moments de ma vie. C’était une aventure extraordinaire, avec des personnes formidables.”

Unbreakable est une série composée de 8 épisodes, filmée sur les quatre continents, et qui met les candidats sous une telle pression physique et mentale que seuls les plus forts peuvent s’en sortir. Le plus fort a été Angus Morison, le skieur né en Ecosse. Angus est également le champion britannique de Skiercross et a passé les 10 dernières années à Verbier, où il habite et s’entraîne.

Unbreakable a emmené 8 volontaires intrépides dans un périple planétaire, les soumettant à toute une série de défis éprouvants, comme par exemple un entraînement intensif avec les Navy Seals, un exercice de survie dans la jungle du Guyana, braver les éléments dans l’arctique norvégien, endurer une série d’exercices militaires extrêmes avec les forces spéciales d’Afrique du sud. Leurs limites ont été mises à l’épreuve par des tests d’aptitude militaire parmi les plus durs du monde et par des leçons de survie dans les environnements les plus extrêmes du globe. Sur leur parcours, ils ont du se battre contre des anacondas dans la jungle, plonger dans les eaux arctiques à travers un trou creusé dans la glace, se laisser enterrer jusqu’au cou dans le désert du Sahara, s’échapper d’un hélicoptère en train de couler, lutter pour tenter de sauver un bateau en train de couler, et participer à un exercice d’endurance extrême dans la brousse avec les forces spéciales d’Afrique du Sud.

Qu’est-ce qui t’a poussé à participer à Unbreakable?Je me suis dit que ça serait une belle opportunité de voyager et rencontrer

des personnes partageant mon état d’esprit, tout en passant un bon moment à faire du sport en repoussant mes limites.

Quelle a été la partie la plus difficile de cette expérience?Je suis tombé deux fois très malade, (une fois en raison d’un épuisement

lié à la chaleur et une autre fois à cause d’une intoxication alimentaire), et je savais que si je ne guérissais pas rapidement, je ne pourrais pas supporter les épreuves et serait rapidement éliminé. Il y avait donc une

quickly I would be “broken!” and kicked off the show so there was huge pressure not only to deal with the conditions but also to be able to compete in them and keep going even when I was physically wrecked.

On a show like this, the contestants are working very closely together for a long period of time under stressful conditions. Were there any clashes of personalities or arguments?

Obviously there were moments when tempers ran a bit thin but it was amazing how well we all got on. One of the greatest things I’ve drawn from the show are my new friends.

What was the most rewarding part of the experience?Completing it! I had a huge feeling of achievement and I actually

felt a bit emotional!

Which was your favourite location?I enjoyed going to Guyana and South Africa the most, I felt like I

was on a real adventure while competing in those countries.

Did you fear for your safety at any stage?Once or twice while getting acquainted with the local wildlife I

thought “wait a minute no one can predict what a wild animal is going to do if things go wrong”.

How did it feel to come out as the winner?I don’t really think of myself as the winner, I was just a bit

stronger on the last week of challenges, there were three of us that got to the end and I’m just happy I got to share the experience with them.

Has this helped with your future goals? I’m still competing in World Cup Skier Cross and my main goal

at the moment is to qualify for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Maybe Unbreakable has made me realise that just about anything is possible if you put your heart and soul into it!

Dans une émission comme celle-là, les concurrents travaillent souvent très près les uns des autres pendant de longues périodes, dans des conditions stressantes. Y-a-t’il eu des frictions ou des conflits de personnalités ?

Il y a bien sûr eu des moments où l’ambiance était un peu tendue, mais c’est incroyable à quel point nous nous sommes bien entendus. Une des choses les plus précieuses que j’ai gardées de cette émission sont mes nouveaux amis.

Quelle a été la partie qui t’a amené la plus grande satisfaction dans cette expérience?

La plus belle partie pour moi a été d’arriver au bout de l’aventure, j’ai vraiment eu le sentiment d’avoir accompli quelque chose, j’en ai été très ému !

Quelle a été ta région préférée ?J’ai préféré le Guyana et l’Afrique du sud, j’ai eu l’impression de vivre

une véritable aventure lors des épreuves dans ces pays.

As-tu eu peur pour ta sécurité à un moment donné ?Une ou deux fois, alors que nous nous familiarisions avec la faune locale,

je me suis dit “attends un peu, personne ne peut prévoir la réaction d’un animal sauvage si les choses tournent mal ».

Quelle impression cela fait-il d’avoir gagné ?Je ne me considère pas vraiment comme le vainqueur. J’ai juste été un

peu plus fort lors de la dernière semaine d’épreuves. Nous ne sommes que trois à avoir terminé et je suis juste content d’avoir partagé cette expérience avec les autres.

Cette victoire t’a-t-elle aidé pour tes objectifs futurs ? Je continue à courir en Coupe du Monde de Skier Cross et mon principal

objectif actuellement est de me qualifier pour les Jeux Olympiques d’hiver en 2010 à Vancouver. Peut-être que “Unbreakable” m’a fait réaliser que tout est possible, du moment que tu y mets tout ton cœur et ton âme !
