VCM PresentsWelcome to the inaugural season of our new Conservatory Concert Series! We are delighted to present an array of fi ne performers: an exciting mix of touring artists, as well as outstanding musicians from among our own VCM faculty.

This season features award-winning artists such as the Cecelia String Quartet, and pianist Sara Davis Buechner; ground-breaking compositions from the classical repertoire, including Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion; engaging music from the 20th and 21st centuries in our New Music Giants and Faculty Spotlight concerts; and a special jazz performance featuring the amazingly versatile Brad Turner, joined by Gordon Clements and other members of our Conservatory jazz faculty.

Cecilia String QuartetFirst prize winners of the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition, Canada’s Cecilia String Quartet has quickly attracted the attention of the chamber world at home and internationally. Praised for their “extraordinary commitment and maturity” and “talent, passion and mastery”, this young quartet is one of Canada’s most exciting young ensembles today. They are currently the Graduate Resident String Quartet at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School.

The “Cecelias” have performed for some of the most respected chamber series internationally, such as Music Toronto, the La Jolla Music Society, ProQuartet (Paris, France), and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. They also toured Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia with Jeunesses Musicales Canada on the Desjardins Concert Series. In addition to their prize at the Banff competition, they were prize-winners at the Bordeaux (2010), Osaka (2008), and Rutenberg (2008) International Chamber Music Competitions. Committed to teaching and outreach, the CSQ has taught and performed at the Austin Chamber Music Festival in Texas and at QuartetFest at Laurier University in Waterloo, and has presented educational programs for elementary and high schools across the USA, Canada, and France.

The Cecilia String Quartet takes its name from St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music. Members of the CSQ have attended the University of Toronto, the Glenn Gould School, the Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, New England Conservatory, and the Hochschule für Musik und Theatre München.

Min-Jeong Koh currently plays on the 1767 Joannes Baptista Guadagnini violin on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts and an anonymous donor; and Sarah Nematallah plays on the 1851 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume on loan from an anonymous donor. The Quartet would like to thank the anonymous donors and the Canada Council for the Arts for their generous support.

New Music GiantsNew Music Giants features music by John Cage, Steve Reich, Jacques Hétu, and includes two world premieres by VCM composers Stephen Brown and Wes RD Wraggett. The works range from an ensemble for 12 radios, to viola and accordion, to electric guitar, all performed by members of the Conservatory’s string and guitar faculty, together with outstanding students from VCM’s Collegium Program for Young Musicians. A concert for those who love new music — and for those who think they don’t!

Paula Kiffner, CelloPaula Kiffner is a faculty member of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and the Nanaimo Conservatory. A former member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Kiffner has also performed as guest principal cellist of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and appears frequently as a recitalist and concerto soloist throughout the Pacifi c Northwest. Her performances are heard on CBC Radio and KING FM (Seattle). Ms. Kiffner also works with youth orchestras in Canada and the US, and has served as guest artist and teacher at the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria.

She earned music performance degrees from Ohio State University and Peabody Conservatory. While at Peabody she was principal cellist of the Annapolis Symphony and a member of the Washington Theater Chamber Players, both under the artistic direction of Leon Fleisher. Her teachers were Harvey Shapiro, Laurence Lesser and Stephen Kates.

Bradford Werner, Guitar Originally from Nelson B.C., Bradford Werner now resides in Victoria where he teaches and works as a freelance musician. Brad is currently working with Adrian Verdejo and Michael Dias as a member of the Victoria Guitar Trio, premiering new works with a focus on Canadian content. In 2009 he was a fi nalist in the Northwest Guitar Festival Competition. Many of Brad’s students have won prizes in the Greater Victoria Music Festival and the BC Provincial Competitions.

Previous studies were with Alexander Dunn, Stephen Boswell, Wes RD Wraggett, Stephen Brown, and Murray Visscher. He has played

in masterclass and festival performance for artists such as Paul Galbraith, Roland Dyens,David Tanenbaum, Pepe Romero, Adam Holzman, John Schneideman, Michael Partington, Ron MacFarlane, Ana Vidovic, Jeremy Jouve, and Thibault Cauvin. (www.bradfordwerner.ca)

Michael Dias, Guitar An enthusiastic performer, musicologist and teacher, Michael Dias completed a Master of Music

degree in guitar performance under Dr. Alexander Dunn at the University of Victoria in 2008. Michael was the recipient of the fi rst prize at the 2008 Northwest Guitar Festival. He is the Managing Editor of the UVic School of Music’s annual journal, Musicological Explorations, and is currently conducting research in the fi eld of twentieth-century sketch study, towards the completion of a PhD in Musicology. As well as performing with the Victoria Guitar Trio, Michael maintains a busy teaching studio, and is director of the VCM Guitar Orchestra.

A Calgary native, Michael studied under Jacob Salomons and played in masterclasses with renowned artists such as David Tanenbaum, Roland Dyens, Benjamin Verdery, Adam Holzman, Judcael Perroy and Carlos Barbosa-Lima.

Douglas Hensley, Guitar Douglas Hensley received B.M. and M.M. degrees in guitar performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and has premiered and/or commissioned over 60 solo and chamber works that use guitar. He has also been very active in the widely varied fi eld of early music, on such instruments as gittern, various lutes, vihuela/viola damano, and theorbo. Along with soprano Elizabeth MacIsaac, Douglas is a founding member of

the Continuum Consort which specializes in both early and modern music, and also has produced a programme of lute songs on the CD Si je languis.

In addition to a number of other recordings, he can be heard playing oud and setâr in the Anima Medieval Music Duo CD La rosa enfl orece. Douglas is guitar/lute/theorbo/banjo/mandolinist with the Victoria Symphony and Pacifi c Opera Victoria, resident early strings plucker with the award-winning women’s choir Ensemble Laude, and serves on the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He also lives a parallel life as a Persian musician, playing târ, setâr, oud, barbat and santur with the Persian classical music ensemble Daryâ.

Christine Prince, Viola Christine Prince holds degrees in viola performance from the University of California and University of Victoria, as well as pursuing advanced studies at the Banff Centre and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (the Netherlands). Her eclectic musical interests include historically informed performance on period instruments, and works by women composers. A keen advocate for contemporary music, she has premiered and commissioned a number of new works for the viola. Christine teaches violin, viola and chamber music at the VCM.

As an active chamber musician and recitalist, Christine has participated in festivals such as Academia Chigianna (Italy), the International Musicians’ Seminar (Cornwall, UK) and the Hornby Island Festival. As well, she performs regularly on several local chamber music series.

Stephen Brown, ComposerStephen Brown was born in Nottingham, England, grew up in Montreal and Kitchener before moving to Toronto, where he later attended the Royal Conservatory of Music. Stephen is a composer, conductor, adjudicator, and teacher. He is Head of the Theory and Composition Department at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, a senior theory examination designer for the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, and has twice served on a BC Arts Council jury. His compositions include a symphony, a piano concerto, two song cycles, two overtures, two suites for orchestra, a missa brevis, a canticle for soprano, chorus and orchestra, and many chamber and solo works.

He has taken a particular interest in pedagogical works, writing six books of student pieces for piano, as well as a book each for violin and fl ute. He has had many works performed at orchestral, chamber and solo concerts. Performances include those by Erich Kunzel and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver and Victoria Symphony Orchestras, and the Sidney Classical Orchestra in Sidney, British Columbia, of which he is the Artistic Director and Conductor. Besides his love of classical music, he takes an active interest in early jazz, playing piano and guitar with the Bastion Jazz Band.

Jonathan Eng, Percussion Jonathan Eng studied at University of Victoria, Humber College and the Banff Centre for the Arts. His versatility as a percussionist has allowed him to work in genres from classical to musical theatre and from Big Band to Fife and Drum. He has led a jazz quintet playing for the Governor General and the US ambassador to Canada, has performed for Queen Elizabeth II and recently for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Jonathan is also an active educator teaching privately, a clinician for percussion ensembles, and percussion instructor at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Wes RD Wraggett, ComposerWes RD Wraggett was educated at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto. He is a commissioned composer of music for concert, stage, dance and media. As a jazz guitarist he can be found backing singers in Victoria, and he is also a teacher on the faculty of the VCM.

January Jazz with Brad TurnerThe January blues will be sent packing with this lively evening featuring jazz maven Brad Turner together with Gordon Clements and Conservatory colleagues.

Brad Turner, Trumpet

Brad Turner’s phenomenal talents as a trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer make him one of Canada’s most in-demand and highly esteemed musicians. Brad’s groups have opened for McCoy Tyner, Diana Krall, Ahmad Jamal and Tony Bennett. Brad has released six albums, fi ve as a trumpeter with his quartet, the most recent being the ’07 release Small Wonder, which was nominated for a Juno in the Traditional Jazz Album category.

What Is, released in ’05, won Best Jazz Album, at the ’06 Western Canadian Music Awards. As a pianist with his trio, the ’04 release Question the Answer was nominated for a Canadian Urban Music Award (’05), and a Canadian Indie Music Award (’06). In ’97 and ’98 he won Juno awards for Best Contemporary Jazz Album recognizing his work in the internationally established electric jazz group Metalwood. He was also nominated for a Juno award in 2009 for the Best Traditional Jazz Album.

Gordon Clements

Gordon Clements, Head of Jazz Studies, teaches clarinet, saxophone, fl ute and improvisation. He is Artistic Director of the VCM’s Summer Jazz Workshop, conductor of both the VCM Honour Winds & Percussion and VCM Honour Jazz Orchestra. Gordon

founded the UVic Big Band, the VCM/Camosun Diploma in Jazz program and the VCM Summer Jazz Workshop. He regularly performs with the Victoria Symphony and a wide variety of jazz ensembles. In 2009 Gordon was inducted into the Victoria Music Hall of Fame.

Joey Smith

After touring for two and a half years with the Glenn Miller Orchestra as bassist and arranger, Joey pursued graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in New York. Joey has written numerous arrangements for such groups as the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the Victoria Symphony, also arranging some of the music for the Commonwealth Games in 1994. Currently, several of his arrangements appear on recordings by The Bills and The Marc Atkinson Trio. He has been a faculty member at the VCM in the Jazz Studies Department since 2004 and has been involved with the Conservatory’s Summer Jazz program since 2006.

George McFetridge

A native Edmontonian and longtime mainstay of the Edmonton Jazz Scene, George went from the University of Alberta to Berklee School of Music in Boston and then a stint with the Buddy Rich Big Band touring the USA. He settled in Toronto for a time with TV gigs and a teaching position at Humber College (1985-92). He has performed with many well known artists such as Fraser MacPherson, Woody Shaw, Phil Woods and many more; and has toured Europe with Jacek Kochon and Mariusz Kwiatowski. A member of the VCM Jazz Faculty, George has been leading the quintet Strange Weather and the quartet YT.

“Dualling” Pianosin ConcertDr. Jamie Syer, piano Jamie Syer is Dean of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Artistic Director of the Conservatory’s Collegium Program for Young Musicians, and formerly Head of the Keyboard Department. Dr. Syer is known for his imaginative recital programming, and his artistic, energetic playing. He is a popular adjudicator and workshop clinician, who works frequently with teachers’ groups and with students of all ages. In the fall of 2011 he is leading a Continuing Studies class at the University of Victoria called “Beethoven’s Fabulous Fifties.” He will be heard in solo performance performing Beethoven with the Sidney Classical Orchestra series in March.

Jamie is the recipient of an Alberta Government Achievement Award for outstanding performance, and winner of the national CBC Talent Competition. He studied at the Yale University School of Music with Claude Frank and Ward Davenny. He has completed several concert tours in Europe, performing in Scotland, Ireland, Hungary, France, and England, and has performed closer to home in many recital venues across Canada. Jamie is also Artistic co-Director of the Alberta summer music workshop “Strings & Keys.”

Robert Holliston, pianoRobert Holliston studied at the Victoria Conservatory of Music under Robin Wood and Winifred Scott Wood, and at the University of British Columbia under Robert Rogers. A popular public speaker, Robert has given pre-performance lectures for Pacifi c Opera Victoria since 1993 and is POV’s Chorus Master/Répétiteur. Still an active performer, Robert is currently coordinator of Collaborative Piano Studies at the VCM, where he also teaches piano and music history, and acts as vocal coach. Robert was a founding director of the VCM Opera Studio, and a founding member of the Goolden Piano Trio, with whom he currently performs.

As an accompanist and chamber player he has performed throughout Canada and the USA, England and New Zealand, and has been heard frequently on CBC Radio. He has recorded CDs with the popular salon ensemble Viveza, trombonist Ian McDougall, tenor Ken Lavigne, his brother Tom Holliston, Show Business Giants, and members of the Hornby Island Ensemble. Robert has collaborated with many of Canada’s leading singers, including Richard Margison, Benjamin Butterfi eld, Judith Forst, Nathalie Paulin, Susan Platts, Peter Barcza, and fellow VCM faculty members; string players Eugene Fodor, Moshe Hammer, Marc Destrubé, and Paul Marleyn; and dancers Karen Kain and Evelyn Hart.

Masako Hockey, PercussionHaving musical experience with a great variety of ensembles, Masako Hockey has played in situations ranging from major symphony orchestras, to opera houses and theatre groups. She has been a featured solo marimbist with numerous orchestras in British Columbia and has performed with the Victoria Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Operatic Society, Ballet Victoria, Victoria Music Corner Ensemble, and Aventa Ensemble, to name a few. An avid contemporary auxiliary Latin percussionist, she performs on congas, bongos and timbales with The Chris Millington Band.

As a member of the Tokyo Pipe Band’s drum corps, Masako marched in the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade and competed in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. In individual competition she took top honours, winning the Solo Snare Drumming Award at the Tokyo Highland Games and was Japan’s only regimental pipe band snare drummer in 2000 to receive a major scholarship award in drumming abroad (Tacoma, Washington, USA).

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Masako received her Master’s Degree in Music Performance (Percussion) from the world renowned Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music, and her undergraduate degree from The Musashino Academia Musicae.

Masako is an enthusiastic music teacher, training young children from her private music studio. She is the percussion tutor at St. Michael’s University School, and a personal coach in musicality and advanced technical studies to school students and university music majors alike. Masako is an offi cial Korogi Marimba Artist, and also endorses Istanbul Agop Cymbals and Ron Vaughn Mallets.

Jonathan Eng, Percussion Jonathan Eng studied at University of Victoria, Humber College and the Banff Centre for the Arts. His versatility as a percussionist has allowed him to work in genres from classical to musical theatre and from Big Band to Fife and Drum. He has led a jazz quintet playing for the Governor General and the US ambassador to Canada, has performed for Queen Elizabeth II and recently for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Jonathan is also an active educator teaching privately, a clinician for percussion ensembles, and percussion instructor at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

Faculty SpotlightThe Aurora Trio The Aurora Trio began in 2000 as a collaboration among Conservatory faculty members and Victoria Symphony colleagues Mary Byrne, fl ute; Christine Prince, viola; and Annabelle Stanley, harp. While the impetus for the formation of this ensemble was, as it is for all trios of this instrumentation, the desire to perform Claude Debussy’s great Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, Aurora quickly embraced the multifaceted repertoire composed especially for this instrumental combination and actively seeks opportunities to create and present arrangements from the broader body of chamber music. Their programming ranges from the masterworks for this genre, to recently composed works — particularly those from the pen of Canada’s fi nest composers — as well as arrangements of works originally written for other ensemble confi gurations.

Since its establishment the Trio has been selected for performances on chamber music series such as the Old Schoolhouse Series (Qualicum), Harmonic Interlude Series (UVic at Dunsmuir Lodge), St. Michael’s Presents (Chemainus), Music Among Friends and Spectrum Chamber Music Series (Victoria Conservatory of Music). As committed performers and educators, the Aurora Trio is involved in performance, lecturing, teaching, and coaching, both individually and as an ensemble.

Nicholas Fairbank, Organ Nicholas Fairbank was born and raised on Canada’s west coast and now lives and works in Victoria. He divides his time among his various musical activities as composer, organist, collaborative pianist and harpsichordist, conductor, adjudicator, clinician, teacher and singer.

Mr. Fairbank is currently Instructor of Organ at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Church Musician at Grace Lutheran Church, and Artistic Director of both the Viva Youth Choirs and Via Choralis Chamber Choir. His catalogue of compositions includes more

than 50 works for organ and piano solo, voice, and for various choral and instrumental ensembles.

After early studies in Vancouver (piano with Michael Longton, Robert Cooper & Audrey Mallinson, pipe organ with Suzanne Gibson & Patrick Wedd) he pursued advanced musical training in London and Paris, studying organ with Christopher Herrick, Richard Popplewell and Naji Hakim. His composition teachers have included Stephen Chatman and John Celona. He holds Masters degrees from l’Université de Paris (Musicology & French literature), the University of California at Santa Barbara (French language and pedagogy), and the University of Victoria (Composition), as well as Associateship diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music (gold medal winner for pipe organ, 1981), and the Royal Canadian College of Organists (Willan and Barker prizes 1998). Many of his works are published by Cypress Publishing, the RCCO, Mayfair Montgomery, and his own company FMP, while others are available through the Canadian Music Centre of which he was appointed an Associate Composer in 2007. He is a member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and currently serves as 1st Vice-President of the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

Mary Jill McCulloch, Flute Mary Jill McCulloch is principal flutist of Civic Orchestra of Victoria. She performs with Voces Intimae as both flutist and singer, and plays violin with Sooke Philharmonic. Since coming to Victoria in 1989, Mary Jill has appeared as flute soloist with St. Cecelia Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Victoria, Victoria Chamber Orchestra, and Sidney Community Music School Orchestra. She has performed frequently in the Christ Church Cathedral Summer Recital Series. She enjoys teaching students of all ages and levels of proficiency, using a wide variety of music. Her students have often won top honours in their Conservatory exams and excelled at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival.

Mary Jill earned a Masters in Performance Practice from Stanford University after completing a BA and Teaching Credential in Music from California State University, Chico. Her main teachers have included Daniel Hiestand, Frances Blaisdell and Thomas Nyfenger. She received Music Guild Scholarships and was winner of concerto competitions, playing the Hue ‘Fantasie’ with the Chico Symphony and the Nielsen Concerto with Stanford Symphony. She was flutist with the Stanford Bach Cantata Series, Albany Consort and the San Jose Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Kathryn Whitney, Voice Kathryn Whitney began her musical training at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, going on to study at the Universities of Toronto (BA) and Oxford, (MPhil & PhD). She completed her training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where her teachers were Emma Kirbky and Susan McCulloch. Since 2010 Kathryn has held simultaneous artist residencies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, at the School of Advanced Study in the University of London (where she leads the SongArt Performance Research Group), and at the Walton Estate on the Italian island of Ischia. She has been a visiting clinician and lecturer at many institutions, including most recently at the University of British Columbia, Mount Allison University, the University of Averio in Portugal, King’s College, London and Cambridge University. Above all, Kathryn loves teaching, and she was thrilled to join the voice faculty at the VCM in 2010.

Kathryn was artist in residence at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, 2002-2005 and sang her London début at St John’s Smith Square in 2005. Her many scholarships and

awards include those from the Arts Council of England, the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust, the Worshipful Company of Drapers of London, the University of Oxford, the BC Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. A champion of new music, she regularly commissions new works in both Canada and the UK, and has premièred over 40 pieces, the majority written for her voice. Kathryn was a lecturer in music at the University of Oxford for 12 years, with concurrent appointments at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Sara Davis Buechner Sara Davis Buechner is a classical concert pianist whose performances and recordings have garnered acclaim on four continents. Career highlights include winning prizes in many of the world’s most prestigious competitions, appearing with prominent orchestras world-wide, and an extensive list of recordings on major CD labels, MP-fi les, and Yamaha software systems.

Her extensive repertoire includes over 100 different piano concertos spanning the breadth of keyboard music from Bach to the music of prominent composers of our time. Her affi nities range from Mozart (InTune magazine: “the closest thing to a perfect disc of Mozart piano music known”) to Chopin to Busoni (a friend of the Busoni family, she studied with several of his important pupils) to Japanese music to Ragtime, Novelty Classics and Gershwin (Deseret News: “the greatest performance of Rhapsody in Blue I have ever heard”). She has composed several suites for piano as well as music for chamber ensemble and voice. And she is also one of the very few concert pianists today performing original scores to silent movies, like Ben Hur (150 minutes non-stop) at New York’s Lincoln Center.

Ms. Buechner is Associate Professor of Piano and Piano Literature at the University of British Columbia. She is in great demand as an adjudicator for important piano competitions and festivals, and presents lectures, workshops and masterclasses worldwide, from the Royal Academy in London to the Juilliard School to the Kobe-Yamate Gakuen in Osaka, Japan.
