    Oscilloscope tubes

    The most important characteristics ofan oscilloscope tube are deflectionsensitivity(deflection on the screenper volt), bandwidth (or rise time ofthe step-function response), spotdiameter, useful scan and maximum

    writing speed. The high sensitivity and super-wide-

    band of CRTs are achieved usingtraveling-wave deflecting systems.Electrons of the beam in thetravelling-wave deflecting system aredeflected by the incident

    electromagnetic wave propagatingalong the system with the samevelocity as electrons of the beam.

    Flat panel display

    CRTs are relatively fragile and bulky.

    Other types of thinner displays were developed. They are oftencalledflat panel displays.

    Most flat-panel displays form digits or characters withcombination of segments or dots. The arrangement of these

    elements is called the display font.The most common format for numeric display is the seven-

    segment font.

    Graphic displays are like very large dot matrices. Each dot in a

    graphic display is calledpicture element,pixelorpel. Thecapabilities of a graphic display depend on number of pixelshorizontally and vertically.

    LED DISPLAY

    Light emitting diodes are used in LED displays.

    Operation of the LED displays is based on the injectionluminescence.

    LED displays are available in many different sizes and shapes.

    Usually LED displays radiate red, orange, yellow or green light.

    They have a wide operating temperature range, are inexpensive,easily interfaced to digital logic, easily multiplexed, do not requirehigh voltages and have fast response time.

    The viewing angle is good and display of arbitrary numbers of digitsis easily assembled.

    Gas discharge displays and plasma display panels

    The most common form of nixie tube has ten cathodes in the shapes of the

    numerals 0 to 9 (and occasionally a decimal point or two), but there are also

    types that show various letters, signs and symbols. Each cathode can bemade to glow in the characteristic neon red-orange color by applying about

    170 voltsDC at a few milliamps between a cathode and the anode.

    Electronic paper, also sometimes called e-paper or electronic ink, is a

    display technology designed to mimic the appearance of regular inkon paper. Unlike a conventional flat panel display, which uses a

    backlight to illuminate its pixels, electronic paper reflects light like

    ordinary paper and is capable of holding text and images indefinitely

    without drawing electricity, while allowing the image to be changed

    later.

    These printers have a mechanism that

    touches the paper to create an image.

    These printers work by banging a print

    head containing a number of metal

    pins which strike an inked ribbon

    placed between the print head and

    the paper.

    The term dot matrix refers to the process ofplacing dots to form an image.

    Its speed is usually 30 to 550 characters persecond (cps).This is the cheapest and the most noisyprinter and has a low print quality. Dot Matrixwere 1st introduced by Centronics in 1970.

    The dot matrix forms images one character at a time

    as the print head moves across the paper.

    Uses tiny pins to hit an ink ribbon and the paper

    much as a typewriter does.This printer arranges dots to form characters and all

    kinds of images.

    9 to 24 vertical column pins are contained in a

    rectangular print head. When print head movesacross the paper, pins are activated to form a dotted

    character image. These printers can produce carbon

    copies along with the originals

    Daisy Wheel Printer

    A daisy wheel printer isbasically an impact printer

    consisting of a wheel andattached extensions on whichmolded metal characters aremounted. A daisy wheelprinter produces letter quality

    print and it cant producegraphics output.

    How Daisy wheel printer

    works

    In a daisy wheel printer, a hammer presses the wheel

    against a ribbon which in turn makes an ink stain onthe paper in the form of a character mounted on the

    wheel extensions.

    These printers are very noisy as there occur great

    movement during the printing. Its printing speed is

    also very slow ,i.e. less than 90cps.

    It is a non-impact printer producinga high quality print. A standardInkjet printer has a resolution of300dpi. Newer models havefurther improved dpi. Inkjetprinters were introduced in thelater half of 1980s and are verypopular owing to their extra-ordinary performance.

    Inside an Inkjet Printer?

    1) Print head Assembly:

    Contains a series of nozzles

    (2) Ink Cartridge:

    Depending on the model & manufacturing ofprinters, ink cartridge come in various

    combinations.

    (3) Print head stepper motor:

    A stepper motor moves the print head

    assembly back and forth across the paper.

    (4) Stabilizer bar:

    The movement of print head is controlled and

    made precise by a stabilizer bar.

    A belt is used to attach print head assembly to

    the stepper motor

    Thermal printers are in-expensive printersmostly used in fax machines. The Thermalprinters are further classified into two types.

    (1) Electro thermal printers:(2) Thermal Wax printers:

    Thermal Printer

    Thermal printers use heated pins and ribbonswith different color bands. These printers

    contain a stick of wax like ink. The ribbon

    passes in front of a print head that has a series

    of tiny heated pins. The pins cause the wax to

    melt and adhere to the paper and when

    temperature reaches to a certain level, it is

    hardened

    Laser Printer

    Laser printers use very advanced technology

    and produce a high quality output. Laser

    printers can also produce high quality graphics

    images.

    Resolution is 600 to 1200dpi.

    (1) Paper is fed and the drum rotates.(2) A laser beam conveys information from thecomputer to a rotating mirror and thus animage is created on the drum.(3)The charges on the drum are ionized andthe toner sticks to the drum.(4)Toner is transferred from drum to paper.(5)Heat is applied to fuse the toner on thepaper.
