Phil Jonas has always beensomething of a golfing globe-trotter and the chance to set

sail for a new adventure is what hashim most excited about the journeyhe is about to begin on the EuropeanSenior Tour.

By Jonass count, his pro golfcareer has taken him to morethan 30 countries and the Surreyresident is delighted to have theopportunity to tick a few more offhis list. Like Russia.Whe n Jo na s glan ced at the

tours schedule after earning oneof six cards at qualifying schoolin Portugal in January, it was theRussian Open Golf Championshipin Moscow and the season-endingMCB Tour Championship on theIndian Ocean island of Mauritiusthat caught his eye.

I am excited about going tosee some places that I have neverbeen before, Jonas says. I havealways wanted to go to Russia. Iam excited about that part.

And Mauritius is another placeI have always wanted to visit, adds Jonas, a native of SouthAfrica who has called the MetroVancouver area home for nearly30 years. It is sort of the Hawaiifor South Africa. Its where peoplego for their holidays.

Of course, this is no holiday for

Jonas, but he is determined to enjoyhis senior golfing moment. Hedoesnt quite know what to expect, but feels good about his game.

If I took stock of my game Ithink I have some of the ingre-dients that could be successful,he says. That is, I hit the ball along way for an old guy and I havea good short game and I have agood imagination for the game. SoI think those things are going towork in my favour. I just have togo play and see what happens.

Jones has been a very goodplayer for a long time. He wasone of the worlds top-rankedjunior players growing up in SouthAfrica, played the PGA Tour for ashort time after his collegiate golfcareer at Lamar University inTexas and has won on the Cana-dian, South African and SouthAmerican tours.

For the past several years he andNorth Vancouvers Bryn Parryhave been dominating the local pro

circuit. Jonas, who was named thePGA of BCs teacher of the year for2012, runs a golf academy at Hazel-mere in Surrey and also teaches atMcCleery in Vancouver. He plans

to juggle his teaching with his newlife on tour this year.

Jonas figures hell be nervouswhen he tees i t up in early Juneat the tours first event, the Brit-ish PGA Seniors Championship in

Cheshire, England, but he wont bescared. Jonas figures hell be ableto draw upon a successful appear-ance at last summers SeniorOpen Championship at the famed

Turnberry course in Scotland.I hope I am never as nervous

again as I was playing in thatthing, Jonas says. Nervousnessisnt bad, but fear is and I waspretty scared. I had a lot of things

working against me that week.I hadnt played in an eventlike that and my game wasntgood. Theres no doubt that hav-ing made the cut there helped my

game improve and helped me getmy card. I just felt if I could do itwith all these things going againstme, Im not too bad, you know. Itwas a big help.

    The tours schedule, which has

not yet been completely finalized,is expected to include 12 to 15events with purses ranging fromabout $400,000 to $2 million forthe Open championship.

Jonas knows he wont get richplaying the tour, but if he playswell he has an opportunity to makesome decent money.

I think its going to be prettyexpensive to travel, especially forme travelling back and forth, hesays. The cheap thing is the tour-nament entry fee. Its only abou$50 for each event.

Jones is eligible to play in almosall the events, but will have to playhis way into the Open Championship. Last summer, he used a onetime exemption earned for a winway back in 1990 on the SouthAfrican Tour and tied for 55th aTurnberry.

This could be a one-off thingand I think its only right that I goand play every event that I can, hesays. So I expect to play in almosevery event.

He is going with the blessing ohis wife, Patty, who is also a longtime golf pro and instructor, and

their two children.Jones will be joined on tour byfellow Canadian Rick Gibson oVictoria, who is about to beginhis second year on the Europeansenior circuit.

Actually, Rick helped convinceme to go to Q-school, Jonas says.I was kind of humming and haw-ing about going and my daughterhad a basketball game in Victoriaand Rick was in Victoria and hecame and watched.

We were talking and I was say

ing I am thinking about going andhe basically said, listen, you arenot getting any younger. Whenyou get to this age you just donput it off. You cant afford to puit off.

Jonas feels better about hisgame now than he did last summer when he headed overseas forTurnberry. He likes to think heplays some of his best golf whenhe is a long way from home inunfamiliar surroundings. His twowins in Peru would attest to that.

I always remember the firsyear I won in Peru I was downthere playing a practice round bymyself and I was thinking, man, this is fantastic, golf is taking meto a place where Id never dreamof going. My golf was good thawee k, but I think tha t fee linghelped put me over the edge.

Jonas hopes those same feelingsfollow him to some unfamiliarfairways on his new golf journey.

Im excited about it, but well

see how it goes, he says. Its kindof the unknown.

    BRAD ZIEMER

    VANCOUVER SUN

here probably is not just onesingle reason why PredatorRidge has succeeded while so

many other mega golf resorts havefailed in British Columbia.

But great golf certainly has a lotto do with it.Yes, the s cenery will take your

breath away and the ser vice isoutstanding, but its the golf thatkeeps players coming back to theVernon facil ity. The Vancouver

Suns Best of B.C. golf panel cer-tainly seems to love it. The 12 pan-elists selected Predators RidgeCourse as their favourite public orresort course in the province.

The Ridge Course at Predator isvisually stunning, eminently play-able, and just pure fun and that iswhat golf is all about in BritishColumbia, says panel memberKris Jonasson, executive directorof British Columbia Golf.

It combines the best of mead-ows, woodlands and mountain

terrains with outstanding lakeviews to create a memorable day.The weather is generally excep-tional and in my mind it is themust-play course in B.C.

This is the second time we havecompiled a panel to rate B.C.sbest cours es. In a 2009 survey,Predator finished second to BigSky in Pemberton. This year, thetwo courses swapped places.

Our 12 panelists were each askedto submit their own top 10 listsand through a points system a top10 list of their lists was compiled.

Predator received more first-place votes (three) than any othercourse.

I chose Predator Ridge as myNo. 1 because it offers the com-

plete package: a gorgeous lay-out, great conditions, top ser-vice and expansive patios in oneof the most beautiful regions ofthe province, says panelist HollyHorwood, a two-time B.C. SeniorWomens champion.

We try to play it every year withanother couple when we visit thearea. Memories of golf playedthere include thoughts of warmth, beautiful vistas and a crisp glassof Pinot Gris from BurrowingOwl afterwards. It doesnt get any

better.Predator Ridge is No. 1 for me

as it has a wide variety of interest-ing, yet very playable holes, sayspanelist Mike Carroll, a Vancou-ver lawyer who is serving a one-year term as presid ent of Gol fCanada.

The course is always in greatcondition and the level of service, quality of the food and beverageoperations, and the practice facil-ity are all first-class.

    Predator Ridge has been open

since 1991 and, for most of thoseyear s, it was a 27-hole faci lity. But noted Canadian golf architectDoug Carrick was recently askedto design nine new holes andre-do one of the existing nines.

His creation, the Ridge Course, has drawn rave reviews since offi-cially opening in 2010.

The Ridge Course is a perfectcomplement to the existing Pred-ator Course, says Brad Pelle-tier, who runs the facility for the

owner, Vancouver-based WesbildHoldings Ltd.Very infrequently with a site

that has significant elevationchange are you able to deliver a

very playable golf course. I thinkthat is what Doug Carrick has

achieved with the Ridge Course. It offers that unique B.C. settingwith an experience that isnt goingto beat you up. Its going to makeyou feel good about your game, not demoralize you.Whi le many other B.C . golf

resorts with significant real estatecomponents have struggled inrecent times, Predator Ridge hascontinued to flourish.

I always say that Predator Ridgehas four unique things, Pelle-tier says. It has a great piece of

property, it has a great brand, ithas great people and it has alwayscontinued to innovate. So manyfacilities, at some point in theirlife cycle, run out of ideas anddont know where to go next.

    That has not happened atPredator.

Under Pelletiers leadership, the facility has added formerLPGA regular A.J. Eathorne toits instruction staff and hiredformer PGA Tour winner DickZokol as executive director, golf

    development.Predator also has become

    the summer home of HockeyCanada.

    Predator Ridge deserved them,Pelletier says.

I truly believe we are the best inour category in the country. And

we have committed to owning thatsegment. We have not discounted.

Where others have diminished thebrand equity that they have had,we have held firm to our pricingand quality and value and it haspaid off. Last year, we had thestrongest performance ever withinour resort. While Pr ed ator to pped th is

year s poll, Big Sky was a closesecond.

Multiple PGA of BC player of theyear winner Bryn Parry and Van-couver Golf Tour commissionerFraser Mulholland both chose BigSky as their top course in B.C.

Big Sky is unparalleled inbeauty, conditio n, shot qualityand overall golf experience, saysParry. Each and every time I haveplayed Big Sky it has impressedme and in a new way. Hittingshots from perfect fairways whilelooking at spectacular moun-tain scenery with hang gliders

overhead is British Columbiasmost unique and enjoyable public

golf experience. The combination of an amaz-ing practice facility, exceptionallymanicured fairways and greensand a breathtaking view of the8,000-foot Mount Currie all daymakes Big Sky one of my all-timefavourites, adds Mulholland.

Tobiano, the Tom McBroom lay-out near Kamloops, also receivedtwo first-place votes from pan-elists Adam Hadwin and DougRoxburgh.

    Besides the unreal views, the

course is well manicured and asa player I love it because it is ademanding design, says Hadwin,a regular on the Web.com Tour.It may not be the best coursefor higher handicaps, but for thegood player it presents an amaz-ing experience.

Eighteen signature holes, addsRoxburgh, a 13-time winner of theB.C. Amateur Championship. Butmake sure to choose the correctset of tees for your skill level.

New entries into this years top 10

include Whistler Golf Club (No. 5),Swan-e-set Bay (No. 7), Rivershore(No. 8), Fairview Mountain (No. 9)and Morningstar (No. 10).

Courses receiving multiple votesbut unable to crack our top 10included: Squamish Valley, North-view (Ridge course), Fraserview,Salmon Arm, Cordova Bay, TheDunes, Chateau Whistler, Gal-laghers Canyon, Pagoda Ridge,Ledgeview, Eagle Ranch, Talk-ing Rock, Highland Pacific, Peace

British Columbia got short shriftfrom one of this countrys greatgolf course designers, but StanleyThompsons lone West Coast cre-ation has stood the test of time.

Capilano Golf & Country Clubhas long been regarded as one ofCanadas best courses and the sce-nic West Vancouver layout hasbeen selected as this provinces topprivate course by our Best of B.C.panel.

Stanley Thompson is one of thegreat designers and Cap has to beone of his best, says panel mem-ber Phil Jonas , a rookie on thisyears European Senior Tour.

Its a course you wont ever gettired of playing. As a par 70, it is

challenging and you must useevery club in your bag.Absolutely the best, adds fellow

    panelist Doug Roxburgh.Fantastic views, conditioning

and shot challenge.Capilano received four first-place

votes from our panelists to edgesecond-place finisher Shaugh-nessy Golf & Country Club. Panel-ists were asked to vote for their topthree private courses and courseswere awarded five points for first-place votes, three points for sec-ond-place votes and a single pointfor third-place votes.

Capilano finished with 24 points, while Shaughnessy garnered 19points. Victoria Golf Club (18),Sagebrush (10) and Royal Colwood(8) rounded out the top five.

Shaughnessy, which has playedhost to two recent CanadianOpens, actually received more totalnumber of votes (seven) than anyother course. It got a first-placevote from panelist Bryn Parry.

I love the diversity of thecourse, Parry says.

Small greens with a reason-able amount of slope, great condi-tions, the ability to play the course

anywhere from par 70 to 73, hugetrees to aim and hit around, andthe views of the ocean on holes

nine through 12 make this B.C.sbest. Panelists were not allowed to

vote for courses they are affiliatedwith or are members of. That likelyhurt Shaughnessy in the ballotingas panelists Holly Horwood andEugene Wong both play out of theSouthwest Marine Drive layout.

In addition to asking our panel-ists to give us their top public andprivate courses, we asked threeother questions. Here are somehighlights of their responses:

Question 1 If you had toselect a golf hole that best rep-

resents B.C. lets call it theprovinces signature hole whatwould it be?

Not surprisingly, we got a varietyof responses, but three panelistsselected Victoria Golf Clubs sev-enth hole.

This hole could be on the bestpiece of property in Western Can-ada, said panelist Kevin Carri-gan, Canadas reigning CanadianMid Amateur champion. Its justa coincidence it happens to be on

a golf course. Its a tough downhillpar 4 that never sees less than a30-miles-per-hour head wind. The

hole is beautiful.Panelists Adam Hadwin and

Eugene Wong both selected FurryCreeks dramatic par-3 14th holethat sits below the Sea to Sky High-way and hugs Howe Sound.

I think this is a hole that reallysymbolizes B.C., says Wong, theNorth Vancouver resident whowon twice during his rookie yearon the Canadian Tour last sum-mer. The green is a peninsula sur-rounded by water and the moun-tain backdrop is stunning.

Panelist Anne Drewa, week-end anchor for Global BC, pickedanother Furry Creek hole, thepar-4 first.

When you tee off you are sur-rounded by an unobstructed viewof the ocean and mountains,Drewa says.

Its a reminder of why we live inB.C. ... even when it rains.

Other holes receiving votes fromour panelists included the 12that Storey Creek, 17th at NicklausNorth in Whistler, No. 17 at TowerRanch, the fifth hole at Victoria

Golf Club, No. 11 at Golden andthe fifth hole at the Ridge Courseat Predator Ridge.

University Golf Club is the placeto go to get your TaylorMadestailor-made.

TaylorMade is the lates tclub manufacturer to open aregional fitting centre in MetroVancouver.

Its located on the driving rangeat University Golf Club, wheremaster fitter Andy Johnsonstresses club-fitting is not just forlow-handicappers.

We encourage it for every skilllevel, says Johnson, an Austra-lian native who played both theAustralasian and Canadian tours. Some people think, oh, I am notgood enough for a fitting. Abso-lutely you are. We want to get thebest clubs in your hands. Its bet-ter for people just starting.

I like to make sure there isno mystery behind it. I want tomake sure a person understandswhy a particular club works for

them and explain what differentshafts can do and how it managesball flight and gives people more

consistent results. Theres no mys-tery to it. We kind of hold their

hand through the whole process. That process costs $150 for a full

90-minute fitting, which includesevery club in the bag. A partial fit-ting or 45-minute session is $75.

Clients simply hit balls off a driv-ing range mat and a wireless high-tech system called FlightScopemonitors everything about yourswing and delivers it to an iPad.

Swing speed, carry distance, ballspeed, smash factor, launch angle, ball trajectory , backspin rating, peak height ... it will basically tell

you everything except what youate for breakfast that morning.

It will also show me how thatperson is delivering the golf clubinto the ball as well and what theirtendencies are so I can build theright golf club for them, Johnsonsays.

The goal is to fit players withclubs that will help them be moreconsistent.

I feel a bit evil sometimesbecause I like to look at someones

bad shots, Johnson says. That iswhat we want to manage. We wantto improve the bad ones. We are

not going to eradicate them. Weare not going to say we are going

to turn your high slice into a nicestraight draw. We are going tominimize the bad shots and con-trol some of those ones that causethe double- and triple-bogeys.

Johnson says some clients aresurprised by the information pro-duced from their fitting session.

I had a lady come in recentlyand she generated above-averagemens speed so I put her in mensclubs, he says. If she went into astore theyd say no, no you need aladies club.

And then I had a gentlemanwho needed something with a lit-tle more kick, light and soft, and

we went into something ladies andit really helped his game. You canthink outside the box with all theoptions and get the best possibleoption ... we do get a lot of ah-hamoments, people start hittingballs and go thats amazing.

The TaylorMade facility at Uni-versity includes the company sfull 2013 product line, with all

available shaft and head options. It is now open on Tuesdays andWe dn es da ys fr om 11 a.m. to

4 p.m. and appointments can bemade through the University proshop.

Some other major manufactur-ers also have regional fitting cen-tres in the area.

Cleveland has a facility set up onthe grass driving range at Hazel-

mere in Surrey.Titleists regional fitting centre

is located at the driving range atNorthview Golf Club in Surrey.

Phil Jonas, a local teaching prowho is about to begin his first yearon the European Senior Tour, isa big proponent of recreationalplayers being fit for their clubs.

I think its beneficial when youhit outdoors, says Jonas, whohas a teaching academy at Hazel-mere. Here at Hazelmere you canhit outdoors. Anything indoors

is a waste of time as far as I amconcerned because people swingdifferently indoors than they dooutdoors.

You want to be able to simulatewhat they are going to do on thecourse and the next best thing is

being out on the range where theycan sort of see fairway and fire atsome flags. But fitting is impor-tant. If you are going to buy a setof clubs, you might as well buy theright set.

    VancouVer Sun

Two years ago, the RBC CanadianOpen was held at Shaughnessy Golf &Country Club and last summer the CNCanadian Womens Open drew largegalleries to Vancouver Golf Club.

This summer? Well, things arentquite as busy. There are no big-time proevents scheduled for Metro Vancouver. There are, however, a pair of amateurchampionships of note in B.C.

The Pacific Coast Amateur, whose pastchampions include former PGA Tourwinners Ben Crane and Billy Mayfair, returns to Capilano Golf & Country Club

in West Vancouver, July 23-26.The Canadian Mens Amateur Cham-

pionship goes Aug. 6-9 at Royal Col-wood and Gorge Vale golf clubs inVictoria.

In 2003, Abbotsfords James Leppran away from an impressive field atCapilano that included current PGATour members Ryan Moore and Spen-cer Levin to win the Pacific Coast Ama-teur. His 17-under total of 263 beat thefield by 10 shots and included a course

    record 62 in thesecond round.

    I remember get-ting off to a ter-

rible start in myfirst round, being afew over par at onepoint, Lepp recalls. Then I holed outon 17 for an eagleto turn my roundand tournamentaround. I remem-ber it being wicked awesome, from theevent itself, to the course, and obviouslythe way I played.

The Pacific Coast Amateur has beenheld annually since 1967 and is always

played on great golf courses. Recentsites include Bandon Dunes, EugeneCountry Club, the Olympic Club, SeattleGolf Club and Royal Colwood. At this summers Canadian Amateur,

Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont.,will attempt to win his third straightnational amateur championship.

The new PGA Tour Canada circuitmakes the Times-Colonist-Island Sav-ings Open its inaugural event June 6-9at Uplands Golf Club in Victoria. PGA

Tour Canada took over the strugglingCanadian Tour late last fall and has aneight-event schedule this summer.

    This provinces premier amateur

tournament, the B.C. Amateur, goesJuly 9-12 in the East Kootenays. The111th playing of the event will be con-tested at The Springs at Radium andCopper Point Golf Club.

B.C. Golfs Kris Jonasson has longbeen a proponent of moving the B.C.Amateur around the province.

Its called the British Columbia Ama-teur and that means we should be in allregions of the province, Jonasson says. Not necessarily on any type of set rota-tion, but certainly players in all areasand golf fans should have an opportu-

nity to see the finest amateur players inthe province play.Albertas Riley Fleming won last years

B.C. Amateur at Swan-e-set Bay in PittMeadows. The B.C. Womens AmateurChampionship, which was won last yearby Richmonds Christine Wong at Chris-tina Lake Golf Club, goes June 25-28 atPitt Meadows Golf Club.

Youve got to club yourselfright, know your distances and

factor in elevation changes onthe course, Hathaway advises. But at the same time, thecourse gives you some options, and thats one reason its somuch fun to play.

In contrast to the Golds rug-ged character, Wailea Emeraldis softened around the edges, characterized by lush land-scaping and tropical blossomsthat fill the air with deliciousfragrances.

    Hence its befitting nickname:

Tropical Playground.Trent Jones Jr. designed the

par-72, 6,825-yard course tobe fun for all p layers, and Golffor Women magazine consis-tently ranks it as one of themost women-friendly clubs inthe United States.

Featuring carpet-like fairwaysand numerous vistas of thePacific Ocean and the dormantvolcano Mt. Halea kala, thereare few forced carries from theresort and forward tees.

One reason that the Emer-ald is so popular is that it hasfour to six boxes on every hole, which means players can tai-lor their playing ability, noteshead pro Hathaway.Which brings us to Old Blue,

the first course built on theproperty back in 1972, and

located on the rolling foothillsof 10,023-foot Mt. Haleakala.

A clas sic in a ll senses of theword, the Arthur Jack Snyderdesign stretches 6,765 yardsfrom its tips, and epitomizesa true Hawaiian resort coursewith it s cool in g fo unta ins, serene lakes, exotic blossomsand coral sand bankers.

One stroll of its fairways andits easy to understand why OldBlue goes by the name ScenicCharmer.

This is an ideal course forthe weekend golfer, and

also for photographers, as itslayout weaves through scen-ery that captures all the ele-ments that make Wailea sucha special place, including thePacific Ocean and the loomingvolcano.

Which brings us back to thatlava flow hazard, a direct resultof Mt. Haleakala in its youth, relatively speaking.

Jones Jr. is renowned forincorporating unique naturalelements into his designs, andthe lava walls found throughoutthe Gold layout testify to that.

Their preservation duringcourse construction earnedthe recognition of the MauiHistorical Society, and addedyet ano ther unique elemen tto stamp into my global golfpassport.

I am a keen, keen person onexercise, thats right up my alleyand I really feel like the fact Iwalk every course has helped me.I have walked a lot of courses allover B.C. and Alberta. No matter

how mountainous they are I walkthem. The belief of Bobinski and Mar-

shall that golf is good for theirhealth seems to be backed up inscientific fact. An exhaustive 2008study published in the Scandina-vian Journal of Medicine & Sc i-ence found the death rate for golf-ers in Sweden was 40 per centlower than for other people of thesame sex, age and socioeconomicstatus. The study suggested thatcorresponds to a five-year increase

in life expectancy. The Swedish studys authors also

concluded that in addition to itsphysical benefits, there are alsopositive social and psychologicalaspects to the game that can be ofhelp.

Marshall and Bobinski bothstressed that the social aspect ofthe game is one that is importantto them.

Golf is a marvellous game, I just

wish the hell I had started when Iwas a kid, says Marshall, who wasin his 40s when he began playing. But I grew up in the Depressionand was one of five boys and golf

was a long way away in our world.

I think its a marvellous game. Notonly is it a great game for yourphysical health, I think its greatfor your mental health, too. And Ilove the camaraderie that is a bigpart of the game.

    Calorie burner

British Columbia Golf, the gov-erning body of amateur golf in theprovince, is attempting to empha-size the health benefits of playinggolf. A golfer carrying his or her

clubs for 18 holes will typicallywalk about 10,000 steps and burnabout 2,000 calories.

I think that is a key mes-sage that we are trying to get outthere, says Kris Jonasson, exec-utive director of British Colum-bia Golf. Everybody that is in thesport world today recognizes thatwe have an issue with obesity atthe kids level and also at the adultlevel. We know the health benefits

of regular exercise and there hasbeen all sorts of documentationthat talks about the life expec-tancy of golfers compared to therest of the population being muchhigher.

I just think that is a messagethat we need to get out therebecau se golf is a sport that hassome high participation rates andwe should be talking abou t thebenefits of the game outs ide ofjust enjoying playing.

Jonasson is speaking from expe-rience. The longtime RichmondCountry Club member credits golfwith helping to improve his health.

Absolutely, it has benefitedme, Jonasson says. I at one timewalked with two canes because I

had multiple sclerosis. If it hadntbeen for the fact that I wanted toget back out and continue to playgolf Im not sure today I wouldwalk as well as I do.

Fru says Golf Fore Gals, whichhas been in existence since 1999,is trying to address some of those

concerns.Time is an issue for women,so one of the things we are tryingthis year at Mayfair Lakes in Rich-mond is something we are calling6 after 6, Fru says.

That means six holes after6 oclock ... We are hoping this willattract women to come out andplay six holes and then maybe go

back into the restaurant for a glassof wine or something to eat.

Golf Fore Gals has three mem-bership categories. In addition to

the aforementioned social cate-gory, there is a beginner division, which includes lessons as well asa rules and etiquette seminar, anda Golf Canada/Handicap divisionthat allows more serious playersto track their handicaps.

Golf Fore Gals is affiliated withmore than 60 B.C. golf courses, including Metro Vancouver lay-outs like Mayfair Lakes, MorganCreek Golf Course, Greenacres,Country Meadows, Redwoodsand University. It has four B.C.chapters: Vancouver, Fraser Val-ley, Thompson-Okanagan and

Victoria-Gulf Islands.Members pay an annual mem-

ber ship fee , whic h is $180 forsocial members, and have accessto tee times and events throughthe Golf Fore Gals website.

Fru says its an excellent way

for women to connect with otherwomen for golf.

Golf Fore Gals is about muchmore than just golf, Fru says.

Its also about women, commu-nity, friendship, sharing and hav-ing fun.

    LoweLL ULLrich

    The VancouVer ProVince

There is a certain irony that shouldnot be lost within what arguably has

been one of the greatest debates aboutthe game of golf in this decade.

The sport has not yet completely

been able to apply the brakes on avariety of other issues, things such aspace of play, club heads that are thesize of footballs and balls screechingaloft like asteroids above Russia.Yet what has the games gatekeepers

most obsessed is a few inches of extralength on a belly putter, and morespecifically what the long flatstick isapparently doing to fundamentallyalter growth.

To the governing U.S. Golf Associa-tion and Royal & Ancient Golf Club, evil lurks not within the length of theputter but in anchoring. The two clubslast year proposed a rule outlawing

any stroke in which a club comes incontact with the body that remainsthe talk of the sport.

The art of putting, as described bythe USGA, should be simply a matterof holding a club with two hands andmaking a free swing away from thebody, which is about how it has beendone for the last six centuries.

Rule 14-1B would have a three-yeargrace period, but would go into effectJan. 1, 2016. If youve been putting

broomstick-style, with the putter bur-ied in the chest, or the belly-putter,anchored in well, take a guess, youresuddenly out of luck. Anchors away.

Golf Canada went along with theproposal when it was announced lastyear.

The recent trend in stabilizing theclub by anchoring it to the body goesagainst the principles and traditionsinherent with the sport, Dean Ryan,Rules of Golf chair, wrote on Golf Can-adas website.

But the proposed change was metwith steady criticism that at one pointthreatened to drive a wedge betweenthe two major governing bodies andthe games best touring pros.

PGA Tour commissioner TimFinchem announced in February hisgroups opposition to the rule change. That briefly set up the possibility of

having a two-tiered set of rules, onefor the pros and another for everyoneelse. It only got worse when the Euro-pean Tour elected to stick with theUSGA and the R&A.

Call it the golf equivalent of the des-ignated hitter.

The amount of anchoring is rela-tively low, and formed a debate whichsuggested if the procedure was sogood it would be utilized by everygolfer. For a while last winter, how-ever, it raised another simple ques-tion: What is a golf stroke?

Q.Youre exactly the kind oplayer that gol needs at atime when participation levelsappear to have plateaued, anathlete who isnt araid to work toimprove. How did you get started?

A.Guys on the team kept goingout to play last year and I justgured at rst Ill tag along. I wasawul. Then I met my ance. It wasa un thing to do while we weredating. I kept asking mysel why Idid things wrong and she prettymuch had all the answers. From

there once you start learning andyou see improvement thats whenyou get the bug. Seeing mysel getbetter has made me get the buglike wildre.

QTo get to the Lions, you hadto overcome perceived sizelimitations by setting a trainingregimen that eectively toldpeople you wont be outworked.Have you carried that over to gol?

A Im not going to act like I amgood. Im going to put in the

work to be good at this. Very ewpeople are good at something or

no reason. Ill go to the range onceor twice a week in the o-season,and usually play once a week.

QTheres a mental side toootball and denitely one ingol. Any similarities?

ATheres a more intense mentalocus in ootball. I dont know ithats because its my major passionor that is what the game requires.Gol is me battling mysel. Theresonly so much going on betweenyou and the ball during that swing.

You dont want to over-think andyet you need to think. Theres goingto be bad shots and you have toovercome that mentally. You canchoose to let one bad hole breakyou, or you say youve had one badhole, there are 17 others.

Q.Theres got to be someconditioning benets to golor a ootball player?

A.The one thing I noticed is orgol you have to have a airdegree o rotational fexibility. I

noticed I was lacking a bit o thatwhen I rst started. Ive alwaysstretched a lot or ootball but youhave to stretch dierently or gol.

Youve got to allow your hips toopen up. Being more fexible or

gol is always going to translate tobeing a better athlete.

Q.And theres undoubtedly noharm in using the yoga youdo or ootball and apply it to gol?

A.I youre not going to dedicatetime to the gym or running, you need to do yoga. Itll keep youyoung.

Q.So youre hooked? Nomore snowboarding androck climbing, which is how youkept in shape or ootball beore

    discovering gol?

    A.This is the new hobby.

Q.Have you played long enoughto have a avourite courseyet? What course are you lookingorward to playing?

A.I seem to be spending a loto time at Meadow Gardens,Surrey and Guildord. Ive reallywanted to play Tobiano and theWhistler courses.

Q.Any other notableexperiences so ar?A.We went to the PhoenixOpen this year and spent

some time around the 16th hole. That was intense. The 16th hole is

just a big party. It s hard to thinkhow many people you can t ona gol course until you see it oryoursel.

Q.Who is the best goler on theLions?A.It would have been GeroySimon. Paul McCallum willtry to make a case. Mike Reillywould have tried to make a casebut hes gone (to Edmonton), too.So Im going to throw my hat inthere now.

Q.Whats in your bag?A.For a airway wood I have aTaylorMade Rocketballz. Ihave a Cobra Amp driver and orirons its the TaylorMade Burner2.0. And as or balls, Im playing the

TaylorMade Penta, partly becauseor Christmas my grandpa got mesome customized balls that sayBighill 44; or anybody who oundmy lost balls thatll be a git orthem.

It may not seem as if a player could have a better year

than the rise to prominence B.C. Lions linebacker

ADAM BIGHILL had last season until you learn

what hes done off the field lately.

Not only did the 24-year-old catch the golf bug while

becoming a CFL all-star last season, he also was recently

engaged to former Eastern Washington and Oregon State

golfer Kristina Gargaro of Port Moody and thus wont

have to ask twice about fitting in a round between his

robust training schedule. Bighill talked to The Provinces

LOWELL ULLRICHabout the positive changes and

where golf fits in his lifestyle:

Adam Bighill, let, practises his swing at a training acility in Surrey.

He says gol demands that he become more fexible.
