Spring 2012
Welcome to V&A Publishing’s catalogue for Spring 2012, a season in which we have a fantastic range of books.
The V&A celebrates post-war British design in 2012 with a season of exhibitions led by British Design 1948–2012. The accompanying book is a stunning visual overview of British creativity and design. Alongside, we have numerous related titles: British Posters; Award-winning British Design; 21 |Twenty One; Recording Britain; and Queen Elizabeth II. We are also celebrating modern British design in our acclaimed V&A Pattern series with Heal’s, Liberty & Co., Sanderson and Modern British Designers.
The British theme continues with a fascinating look at the groundbreaking The Ambassador magazine, which promoted British fashion and textiles in the post-war period.
Celebrating the opening of the V&A’s renovated fashion galleries in May, the glamorous Ballgowns is set to follow in the footsteps of the hugely popular Tiaras and The Golden Age of Couture.
The second book in our groundbreaking new series on historical dress, Seventeenth-Century Women’s Dress Patterns: Book Two, is published in June, alongside the keenly awaited paperback edition of Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones.
There are two additions to our extensive textiles list: a major study from the V&A’s archives, Alastair Morton and Edinburgh Weavers, and The Sunday Times bestseller Quilts, is now available in paperback.
Our globally renowned programme of V&A exhibitions continues to grow, touring the UK and worldwide. Kalighat Paintings accompanies a touring exhibition in India, and a major exhibition in Germany and Hungary showcasing the V&A’s extensive holdings is celebrated in a new book, Art and Design for All, which offers a fresh perspective on the very early years of the museum.

kalighat paintingsSuhashini Sinha Kalighat painting developed in the vicinity of the Kali
temple in Kolkata, India, in the mid-nineteenth century. The paintings were completed on mill-made paper, stripped of decoration and traditionally feature only one or two characters. Kalighat paintings were some of the first to incorporate secular themes, while also showing satirical depictions of the growing European influence on Kolkata.
This beautiful book reveals the Kalighat (literally ‘home of Kali’) paintings from the V&A’s extensive collection and includes work from the prestigious Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata. Striking new photography accompanies essays from leading experts on the craft and a scientific analysis of the pigments and materials used in the paintings. The book also highlights the work of contemporary artists who are creating Kalighat paintings with a modern twist, based on and inspired by the work of nineteenth-century artists.
Suhashini Sinha is Assistant Curator in the Asian Department at the V&A. She is the co-curator for the touring exhibition Kalighat Paintings (2011).

alastaiR MORtOn and edinBURgh weaVeRsVisionary Textiles and Modern Art
Lesley Jackson
Edinburgh Weavers was one of the most important textile companies of the twentieth century. Alastair Morton, visionary art director of the company, commissioned a remarkable series of textiles from leading British artists, including Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Elisabeth Frink, as well artist-designers, such as Marion Dorn, Ashley Havinden and Lucienne Day.
Morton was also a gifted artist, textile designer and weaver in his own right. This long overdue study traces his wide-ranging career and records the history of Edinburgh Weavers and the glorious textiles it produced. Drawing on the V&A’s extensive archive this impressive book features over 300 images of artists’ textiles unparalleled in quality and scope and is an invaluable resource.
Lesley Jackson is a writer, curator and design historian specializing in twentieth-century design. She has written widely on post-war design and has published several books on textiles, including Robin and Lucienne Day (2001), 20th-Century Pattern Design (2002), From Atoms to Patterns (2008), and Shirley Craven and Hull Traders (2009).

qUilts 1700–2010 Hidden Histories, Untold Stories
Sue Prichard, ed
This groundbreaking book documents the fascinating history of quilt and patchwork production. The hidden histories and personal narratives of some of the most evocative objects in the V&A’s collection are revealed, from the origins of the ‘love poem’ on the Chapman marriage coverlet to the sources of inspiration for the intricately pieced pictorial ‘George III coverlet’. Now available in paperback, this lavishly illustrated book challenges the assumption that stitching is simply ‘women’s work’.
Sue Prichard is Curator of Contemporary Textiles at the V&A. She is the author of V&A Pattern: The Fifties (V&A 2009) and Patchwork for Beginners (V&A 2010).

This landmark book celebrates the best of British design, documenting the transformation and impact of designers’ work over the years between the post-war ‘Austerity Games’ of 1948 and the 2012 Olympics.
As well as essays by leading curators and commentators, British Design incorporates pieces by key practitioners (including Peter Saville, Barbara Hulanicki, Paul Smith and Tom Dixon) to build a comprehensive survey of over 350 of the finest examples of fashion and textiles, furniture, ceramics and glass, theatre design, graphics, photography, architecture, fine art and sculpture from this period. In addition to discussing works commissioned for official purposes, including the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the Festival of Britain, the book highlights the globally influential, and very British, counter-culture, from the sixties boutiques of Mary Quant and Ossie Clark through to the club cultures of Punk, the New Romantics and Rave.
Christopher Breward is Head of Research at the V&A and co-curator of the exhibition British Design 1948–2012. He is a widely published author on the history and culture of fashion. Ghislaine Wood is a curator specializing in twentieth-century art and design in the Research Department at the V&A. She has curated and co-curated several major exhibitions including Surreal Things (2007), Art Deco 1910–1939 (2003) and Art Nouveau 1890–1910 (2000).

Lily Crowther
In 1957 the UK Design Centre launched the first annual Designs of the Year Awards to identify and promote the very best of British design. For the next 30 years, the awards celebrated designed objects in all forms, from the domestic – cutlery, glassware, textiles and furniture – to the communal – street lights, signage and public seating – and everything in between, including fitted kitchens, schooners, bicycles and electronics.
This beautifully designed book introduces and illustrates the quirky breadth of the awards. Iconic objects by Robin and Lucienne Day, Kenneth Grange and David Mellor sit alongside such retro classics as the Barbican basin, the ZX81 personal computer and Globoot wellies.
Lily Crowther is based in the Research Department of the V&A, where she is working on the exhibition British Design 1948–2012. She was previously involved in developing the Museum’s permanent gallery of twentieth-century studio ceramics, and has published on craft in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

high stReetJ.M. Richards Illustrated by Eric Ravilious
First published in 1938, this classic book introduces the British high street, pairing the timeless illustrations of Eric Ravilious with an engaging text by architectural historian J.M. Richards. Shops include the family butcher, the coach builder, the cheesemonger, the knife grinder and the oyster bar.
Only 2000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. As a result, it has become one of the most collectable of all artist’s books from this period. This beautiful facsimile edition features Ravilious’s illustrations in exquisite colour and includes an essay by V&A curator Gill Saunders placing the book and its history into context.
Eric Ravilious (1903–42) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver and remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s. He died at 39 while on service as an Official War Artist. Sir James Richards (1907–92) was editor of the Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent to The Times for over 20 years.

Catherine Flood
Drawing on the V&A’s extensive poster collection, this book traces the evolution of the poster in the hands of graphic designers and fine artists, advertising agencies and counter-cultural groups in Britain since 1945. The range spans ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaigns, lavishly produced Benson and Hedges billboards, punk rock posters, hand-printed indictments of Margaret Thatcher and public art projects on the Underground. From conflicts over the content and control of public space to posters blu-tacked to our bedroom walls, Catherine Flood examines how the poster in Britain has adapted itself to a changing technological environment and defied predictions of its demise.
Catherine Flood is a Prints Curator in the Word and Image Department of the V&A. She specializes in posters and commercial and ephemeral graphics. She has previously published on London Transport posters and nineteenth century print culture.

21 | twentY One 21 Designers for twenty-first century Britain
Gareth Williams
21 | TWENTY ONE showcases designers living and working in Britain who have come to prominence since the millennium. They lead public taste and critical debate; they are the innovators and the explorers of new materials or processes; they are establishing new ways of working, and redefining what that work might be.
Combining interviews with commentary and evaluation, Gareth Williams examines what design means and has meant to Britain and British identity, looking at the roles of government, museums, galleries, studios, the public, and the designers. Designers include El Ultimo Grito, Industrial Facility, Jaime Hayon, Troika and rAndom International, who have worked for brands such as British Airways, Camper, Droog, Muji, The Science Museum and MoMA.
Gareth Williams is Senior Tutor in Design Products at the Royal College of Art, London. His previous books include Telling Tales: Fantasy and Fear in Contemporary Design (V&A 2009), The Furniture Machine: Furniture Design since 1990 (V&A 2006) and Branded? (V&A 2000).

This innovative book presents dynamic and interpretive photographs of British ballgowns spanning 60 years and includes designs by Alexander McQueen, Bellville Sassoon, Bill Gibb, Erdem, Gareth Pugh, Stella McCartney and Zandra Rhodes. The specially commissioned photographs, by fashion photographer David Hughes, are supplemented by essays exploring the ballgown as a particularly British garment, with designers, clients and occasions unique to Britain. The social season of debutante parties and private balls, weddings and charity events have long provided Britain’s fashion designers with opportunities to design elaborate, tour de force eveningwear. In more recent years the ballroom has been replaced by the red carpet. Though the context has changed, the ballgown remains a staple in many designers’ collections and continues to serve as an expression of status, protocol and taste, while simultaneously embodying elements of drama and fantasy.
Sonnet Stanfill is curator of 20th century and contemporary fashion at the V&A. Oriole Cullen is curator of modern textiles and fashion at the V&A. David Hughes is a portrait, still life and fashion photographer. Magda Keaney is Curator of the Fashion Space Gallery at the London College of Fashion.

the aMBassadOR MagazinePromoting Post-War British Textiles and Fashion
Christopher Breward & Claire Wilcox, eds
The Ambassador has been described as ‘probably the most daring and enterprising trade magazine ever conceived’. With the motto ‘Export or Die!’, the magazine was renowned for its innovative design and adventurous editorial approach in promoting British manufacturing in the post-war period.
This book takes a detailed look at the background and impact of The Ambassador. The magazine was driven by the vision of its founder Hans Juda and his wife, Elsbeth, who was responsible for much of the magazine’s striking photography. Focusing on the perceived strengths of British industry, they set up ambitious photo shoots to showcase the latest couture fashions by the likes of Charles Creed and Victor Stiebel. The magazine promoted fine art as an inspiration for design, and commissioned artists such as John Piper and Henry Moore for their covers.
Christopher Breward is Head of Research at the V&A and co-curator of the exhibition British Design 1948–2012. He is a widely published author on the history and culture of fashion. Claire Wilcox is Senior Curator of Fashion at the V&A. She has curated many exhibitions including Vivienne Westwood (V&A 2004) and The Golden Age of Couture (V&A 2007) and edited the accompanying books.

Hats: An Anthology, now available in paperback, offers an unprecedented view of the world of millinery, drawing on the V&A’s extensive collection of hats, Stephen Jones’s own archive and iconic headgear from around the globe. Beautifully illustrated chapters examine the inspiration behind the creation of hats, the history of their construction, the lure of the hat shop and finally the etiquette and occasion of hat wearing for the client.
Stephen Jones spearheaded the revival of British millinery in early 1980s fashion. Today Jones’s era-defining edge continues to attract a celebrity clientele. The roll-call of fashion designers with whom he has collaborated includes Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons and Giles Deacon. Oriole Cullen is curator of modern textiles and fashion at the V&A and author of V&A Pattern: Pop Patterns (V&A 2011)

in-depth patterns and construction details of historical garments
Book Two in the V&A’s groundbreaking new series presents 17 patterns for garments and accessories from a seventeenth-century woman’s wardrobe. It includes patterns for a loose gown, a jacket, a pair of stays and a boned bodice, ivory and wooden busks, shoes, a hat, a stomacher, linen bands and supporters, a bag and a knife case. It also features a description of the stay-making process. Full step-by-step drawings of the construction sequence are given for each garment to enable the reader to accurately reconstruct them. There are scale patterns and diagrams for making linen and metal thread laces and embroidery designs. Multiple photographs of the objects, close-up construction details and X-ray photography reveal the hidden elements of the clothes, the precise number of layers and the stitches used inside.
Susan North is Curator in the V&A Fashion, Textiles and Furniture Department. Jenny Tiramani devised and produced patterns for the book with Melanie Braun, Luca Costigliolo, Armelle Lucas and Claire Thornton. They are all founder members of The School of Historical Dress, who worked together in the wardrobe of Shakespeare’s Globe.
