TESTIMONIALS: What Do You Like About SOURCE?

BITS & BYTES: The Selfie Stick It didn’t take very long for the picture-taking phenomenon

known as the “selfie” to become officially inked in the

dictionary.

The word which defines the act of taking a photograph of

oneself with a smartphone or camera and posting it on social

media, has given inventors leverage to design a product that will

make taking selfies better – the selfie stick.

The selfie stick is a hand-held monopod (tripod minus two

legs) that has a slot for a camera or camera phone and a clamp

that allows users to take selfies with ease.

They have however been given much backlash for taking selfies

in public places. Sports and music stadiums around London

have banned the stick; the Australian Open has stipulated areas

for using the stick, South Korea has placed a fine on users of

unauthorized selfie sticks and more and more museums in

New York have announced bans on the stick.

Is the world becoming so narcissistic that people can’t go

anywhere without taking selfies?

Computer Science major at the UWI, Mona, Jermaine

Watson says social media has corrupted the world.

“Persons place too much emphasis on likes and wanting to

share what they’re doing,” he said. “It’s all about getting

people to validate the things that they’re doing, so they focus

more on the validation of what they’re doing over what is

actually being done.”

He maintains that persons no longer care about the life

they’re living but more about sharing the life they’re living.

Some may argue, that’s the way of the world now, where

social media presence not only serves to showcase one’s

popularity but is good for business.
