Feb., 2012 – February is the month featuring Valentine’s Day, Love, The Super Bowl, Black History Month, and the very in-teresting Best Southwest Partnership’s Seminar/Luncheon in Cedar Hill’s Trinity Church on Thursday, February 23, 2012. The Cedar Hill Chamber is host for this BSW Quarterly Luncheon and they have secured Mr. Bob Goshen, author of “Layered Leadership” to present a seminar that morning and then be the principal speaker at the luncheon. Tickets for this “can’t miss” event are available at any of the 4 BSW Chambers.

Chamber HappeningsThe Mayor’s “State of the City” address on January 12, 2012, got our Lancaster Chamber Luncheons off to a great start as 120 listened to Mayor Marcus Knightas he discussed the achievements of the city in 2011. … He ticked off the fact that both ProLogis buildings are now full, and a third building is in the works. … The city’s credit rating was increased in part because the city’s reserve fund increased from 11% to 19%, which will provide the city the lowest interest rate in years. … Restaurant Row is go-ing strong with the opening of Logan’s Roadhouse and the soon-to-be-completed In-N-Out Burger next door. … And Chicken Express has submitted plans to be adjacent to those two eateries. … Mayor Knight concluded his speech with “If

you’re not already here in Lancaster, you’d better get here as quickly as you can”. … Mayor Knight is completing this 1st

term as mayor and was asked “Will he or won’t he?” in regard to running for office again – and his answer was “I will!” … Chef Carlos was the caterer and brought a new (to us) kind of luncheon – Fried Chicken and Waffles. … It was fabulous! … Another highlight of the luncheon was the introduction of 7 new members, whose names are shown on page 7. Let’s welcome

and support all these new members with your business!

“The trick is growing up without growing old.”

Our Chamber Committees ramped up their 2012 meet-ings, including Ambassadors FunGroup, Education Committee, Network @ Noon Bunch, and Auction-Gala Committee. … We had 13 attend the first Small

Business Roundtable (BBB) of the year on January 27th, with Russell Wyrick, Director of Small Business Development Cen-ter (SBDC) presenting steps needed for starting or expanding a business. Jim Brewer and Nathaniel Barnett from the city pitched in with key points and advice for whom to call. Thanks to LaDonna Guillory from Millbrook Health & Rehab for

FULL STEAM AHEAD

more robust. Recent reports say the economy is turning around. Growth is on the way. Are you ready? The Lan-caster Chamber is here to help all members operate more efficiently. Education is one of our key initiatives this year. We want our business’s to be well informed on the latest trends in media, social networking and running at peak efficiencies. CHAIRMAN’S CORNER …by Doug Hunt

Page 3: 2012 Feb Newsletter

I would like to thank the Chamber again for the opportunity to present the accomplishments of our fine city at the “State of the City” luncheon. For those unable to attend, I would like to submit a recap. In the last quarter of 2011 Lancaster successfully at-tracted Owens Corning and Pinnacle Auto Parts to our commu-nity, utilizing a combined 250,000 square feet of commercial dis-tribution space, and creating over a 100 jobs. The much antici-pated construction of In and Out Burger began in late December, and Chicken Express will commence construction in the very near future. Lancaster continues to re-invest in street and water/sewer infrastructure at its highest levels since the economic decline. The City, through prudent fiscal management has raised its credit rat-

ing two positions with the rating agency Moody’s, resulting in the lowest cost of debt in the history of Lancaster. The City Council has continued to refine the development code to en-sure that Lancaster can compete within our region and beyond for new business, as well as, for businesses to utilize existing building structures. It has been a very productive period for our community.

Additionally, I announced my intention to seek re-election this May. I have been extremely honored to sever Lancaster as mayor, and I desire to continue to lead this community in a manner that will realize the full potential Lancaster possesses. My best to all in the month of February!

Marcus Knight, MayorCity of Lancaster

Mayor’s Comments – Lancaster Connection

Mayor Marcus Knight

hosting us for breakfast and the meeting. Our motto is – WE GREET – WE EAT – WE MEET! And hopefully take something useful back to our businesses.

On January 20th we conducted a Business Retention and Expansion Program (BREP) meet-ing with Clay Wade and his fellow Brenntag SW executives. … Clay reported that Brenntag was now the largest distributor of commercial/industrial chemicals in the world, and that 2011 was a record year of sales for the Brenntag SW facility here in Lancaster. …The BREP team consists of the mayor, city manager, economic development director and chamber president, who meet with the head of the large business being visited. … Our Manufacturing and Logis-tics Roundtable quarterly meetings will resume on Thursday, February 16, 2012, hosted by Alex Yarovoy, manager of WNA Cups. … This is a great opportunity for all the plant manag-ers, owners, or presidents to meet together to discuss their own agendas. … The complete sched-ule for 2012 for the Mfg. & Logistics Roundtables is posted on page 11.

Auction-Gala TimeVivian Chastain (Bienvenidos Restaurant) and Karen McClary (Edward Jones Co.) are chair-ing this year’s Auction-Gala on April 28, 2012, - at MCM Grande which promises to be a fantastic event! … This will be a dressier, classier event than in the past, with MCM promising a white-glove, plated, sit-down dining experience! … If you want to be a part of something big, give Vivian or Karen a call. …

That’s all for now folks! … And we’ll see you

Driving Blind…Why our schools need you!

Recently in Florida, a tragic traffic accident claimed the lives of 10 people. It was reported that the cause of the accident was low visibility caused by high fog and errant smoke from a fire that appeared to be set intention-ally. One of the news anchors reported that driving along this highway appeared to be very similar to driving blind—meaning that the drivers could only see a few feet ahead of them at most. As the reporter continued to discuss the incident, I began to draw the similarities between what the drivers were experiencing and what our students must feel when trying to navigate their future without any true idea of what is around the corner.

Many of our students are driving blind, and it is the responsibility of the adults in the school, the concerned citizens, the local church leaders and the concerned business leaders to offer assistance as we attempt to guide students through the fog. During the last few weeks, I have spoken with many students and most of them have an idea of what they want to do with their lives, but they have very little understanding of the necessary steps it will take to realize their dreams.

They are driving blind.

They need us to help them to chart a path through the fog and to develop an intentional plan for success. On March 6, the Chamber will sponsor the annual Texas Scholars event at Lancaster Middle School with our local 8th graders. This event allows business owners and local leaders an opportunity to discuss details of their individual career paths and share information on why it is impor-tant for students to take the most rigorous courses in high school. Research has shown that when students enroll in the most rigorous course of study in high school, they leave our system better prepared to become successful, productive citizens.

Our goal in Lancaster ISD is to ensure that when students leave our schools they leave us with more than a high school diploma. Our focus on increasing college and career readiness is evidence of our commitment to ensuring that students have choices and op-portunities upon graduation. The real challenge for us today is that many of our students are leaving our school system and entering onto life’s freeway amidst heavy fog and errant smoke. Their visibility is low and their future plans for success are nonexistent. If we are to effectively prepare our students for a future that they will inherit, we must help them to see beyond their time. I encourage you to get involved with the Chamber, to partner with the school district and volunteer to be a mentor or a guest speaker. Our stu-dents need your insight and your experience to prevent them from driving blind and to help them to navigate through the fog of their future. Please contact Ms. Lisa Bacon at 972-218-1430 to volunteer with Texas Scholars or to become a mentor.
