bacteria in water is reduced by afactor of 106 by this UV dosage andthe number of hygiene-relevantviruses and parasites is reduced by afactor of 104 (Source: ÖNORMM5873-1). These certificates are nowalso recognized in Norway, Canadaand the USA. WEDECO’s productseries can handle water flow ratesranging from 1 m3/h to severalthousand m3/h with certifiedsystems.
WEDECO offers the most technicallyadvanced and economically effectivesolution, with the competencegained in 50 years of experience indrinking water disinfection withmore than 50,000 installed largedrinking water systems.
Certified UV systems
In 1993, a research project promotedby the Federal Republic of Germanydemonstrated the effectiveness ofUV disinfection with low pressure UVlamps. Following this, a certifiedmethod and quality standard hasbeen developed, as described in theGerman DVGW guideline W 294 and the Austrian ÖNORM M5873-1,which specify the minimumrequirements for a UV disinfectionsystem. In a costly test procedure, UVdisinfection systems must achieve abiodosimetrically verified UV dose ofat least 400 J/m2 (at 254 nm) toobtain the DVGW, ÖVGW and SVGW(switzerland) certificates. Accordingto the latest scientific knowledge, the number of hygiene-relevant

Reliable disinfection at 254 nm
UV is now used worldwide to disinfectpotable water. Countless water utilitiesand big cities already rely on UV todisinfect their drinking water. Pathogenicbacteria, viruses and parasites such asCryptosporidium and Giardia, areeffectively inactivated by UV light.Disinfection with UV does not lead tothe increased resistance associated withthe use of antibiotics and, increasingly, chlorination. UV disinfection is beingused successfully for groundwater, spring water, well water and surfacewater.
Inactivation of parasites
As extensive tests in Germany and theUSA have proven, UV disinfection is nowthe most effective method ofinactivating dangerous parasites(Cryptosporidia, Giardia) in drinkingwater.

No harmful by-products
Health authorities now recommendthe use of technologies such as UVdisinfection, which generate noharmful by-products. UV disinfectionwith low pressure Spektrotherm UVlamps (primary emission at 254 nm)impairs neither the taste nor theodour of potable water. It retains its natural quality. No harmful by-
products are formed, such as thoseassociated with chlorination (THM)and medium pressure lamps (e.g.nitrite formation, the generation ofassimilable organic carbon [AOC] and the formation of genotoxicsubstances). Nor does UV disinfectionwith Spektrotherm lamps increasethe probability of recontamination.

UV disinfection isguaranteed with WEDECO Spektrotherm® lamps
• Reliable inactivation of bacteria, viruses and parasites (e.g.Cryptosporidia and Giardia)
• No harmful by-products
• No danger from chemicals
• No accumulation of dangerousmicroorganisms
• Cost effective
• Simple installation and operation
ADVANTAGES
In use for 15 years, during which ithas been continuously improved,WEDECO’s Spektrotherm® lowpressure UV lamp is the benchmarkfor UV output and cost-efficiency. Thespecial doping of the Spektrotherm®
lamps (amalgam) and the speciallydeveloped electronic ballasts areresponsible for the excellentoperating properties of WEDECO’sUV systems.
Medium pressure lamps emit a wide-band spectrum, most ofwhich is outside the part of the spectrum that is relevant fordisinfection. In addition, the formation of by-productscannot be excluded.

The WEDECO K systems can beoptionally equipped with a fullyautomatic dose control. This uniquefeature of the WEDECO technologyenables the output to be exactlyadjusted to the water quality andflow. The output of the Spektrotherm®
lamps is continuously controlled androws of lamps can be switched on oroff as necessary, e.g. during periodsof low consumption.
The radiation intensity is determinedat a representative point within theUV reactor and serves, together withthe flow signal, to regulate UVoutput.
UV dose control with the WEDECO variable system
Low flow rate + good waterquality = less intense UV radiation
High flow rate + poor waterquality = more intense UV radiation
The WEDECO variable system offers
• constant UV dose irrespectiveof changes in water quality or flow
• continuous output regulationof the Spektrotherm® lamp
• fully automatic PLC controland visualization with bus orSCADA connection
• maximum disinfectionreliability
• optimization of energy costs
• longer lamp life
• easy operation andmonitoring

In addition to the listed technicalhighlights, the WEDECO K series alsooffers the solution with the lowestoperating and lifetime costs. With lowpower consumption, a long lamp servicelife, variable control and low investmentcosts, the K series sets new standards of cost effectiveness. Coating formationon the quartz sleeves is also moremanageable due to the low lamptemperature, so quartz sleeves rarelyneed to be cleaned. No expensive andmaintanance - intensive wiper systemsare needed.
