Today I got up watching the news with their daily stream of calamities from around the world. Wars, freezing weather, avalanches, Chavez, Japan, Libya, refugees, dictators and leaking reactors. This is a very dangerous world!

In between, the light note about the upcoming marriage of a young man whose merit is only being someone’s son whose only merit was being someone’s son…

Musical curtain. Commercials. Curtain and again back to reality…. Uprisings, storms, polls and protests. What a world this is!

I know that fear sells and that news broadcasts like to discuss the bad things, but I was raised to live without fear and I don’t plan to buy into it at this age.

I turn off the TV.

very pleased to meet you!Instead, I start thinking that I will start my day with no baggage of fear on my back and that my children will continue to grow up as they have up to now, without any major risks or worries, in a country built on 2 key values: Peace and Respect.

A country where everyone is unique and no one is worth less. A country without tanks or enemies. With no complex nor envies.

With no anxiety for an accelerated development, nor dehumanized by money. Where one can think and speak freely and without fear that violence will shout...Silence!

A country that feeds the soul of its citizens and is comfortable for their bodies. Proud to be itself and courageous to make its own path.

Certainly it is not a perfect country and the best thing is that it doesn’t pretend to be.

Another one of its unique greatnesses, once one starts to understand it….

Me pongo a pensar en cambio que iniciaré el día sin ningún tipo de temor en la espalda y que mis hijos seguirán creciendo como hasta ahora, sin grandes riesgos ni desvelos, en un país hecho para las personas y basado en 2 grandes valores claves: Paz y Respeto.

El fenómeno del turismo médico en Costa Rica es muy simple y se resume en 3 factores:

1) En EE.UU. ( y otros países desarrollados) la medicina de buen nivel tiene costos muy elevados.

2) Costa Rica tiene un excelente nivel médico pero a un 1/3 del costo del mismo servicio en Estados Unidos.

3) Junto con servicios médicos homologados en calidad con EE.UU. y reconocidos por las aseguradoras de ese país, Costa Rica ofrece un entorno ideal para la recuperación de pacientes y el disfrute de sus acompañantes.

Los números lo dicen todo: La misma operación o tratamiento que en EE.UU. costaría US$15.000, en Costa Rica cuesta

unos US$5.000. Es decir, con esos US$10.000 de diferencia alcanza para pasajes, hoteles y cuantos tour se desee, no solo para el paciente sino también para uno o varios acompañantes.

Grandes empresas de otros países y aseguradoras extranjeras también tienen sus ojos puestos en este fenómeno, que les abre la posibilidad de reducir drásticamente sus costos en intervenciones quirúrgicas o tratamientos médicos de sus empleados o asegurados, al enviarlos a tratarse en Costa Rica.

Sin embargo, el asunto es más que cuestión de precios, pues también es clave los altos estándares de calidad de la medicina en el país. Según el último ranking de mundial hecho por la O.M.S., el sistema de salud de Costa Rica ocupa el lugar 36 a

But the parties interested in this are not only domiciled in Costa Rica. Large companies in other countries as well as foreign insurance companies have their eyes set on this phenomenon. This further opens the possibility to drastically reduce the cost of surgical interventions or medical treatments for employees and/or insurance holders by sending them to be treated in Costa Rica.

It is important to note as well that this is not strictly a matter of cost. Another key factor is the high standards of quality of medicine and care in this country. According to the last world ranking by the W.H.O., the health system

of Costa Rica occupies the 36th world ranking, even higher than the US which ranks 37th. This ranking, counts not only the private sector but also considers the quality of public health care, one of the strong basis of national medicine.

As a added value, patients in Costa Rica are protected by very comprehensive and favorable legislation, another critical factor taken in consideration for its high score on an

international level.

In the meantime Mexico and Brazil, 2 other Latin American countries that are betting heavily on medical tourism, lag far behind in ranks at 61 and 125 respectively.

According to a Canadian study, to speak more than one language helps to retard the emergence of Alzheimer symptoms for anywhere from 4 to 5 years.

The reason for this is that bilingual people exercise and keep honed certain parts of the brain that are very useful in the battle against Alzheimer. This keeps the brain alert and provides for more adaptive options when faced with the changes caused by Alzheimer’s.

The study was done at the University of York in Toronto with 450 Alzheimer patients participating: one half were bilingual and the other half, monolingual. The results left no room for doubt: Amongst the numerous separate groups of patients at different stages of progression of the disease, in each case, the bilingual subjects were always 4 to 5 years older than those that could speak only one language. That is, those who were bilingual took longer to reach an equal degree of

advancement of the illness as those who could only communicate in one tongue.

Esto radicaría en que la gente bilingüe ejercita ciertas zonas del cerebro que la gente monolingüe casi no usa. Creo una pintura en mi mente y me dejo llevar por la imaginación: la imagen resultante hace que parezca imposible que un lugar así exista. Demasiado febríl, la fantasía se desborda. Pero existe! La Isla del Coco existe...

Como artista, un sitio así me presenta la máxima expresión de posibilidades. Quiero retratar la Isla del Coco,

Mi misión en el parque: Crear murales donando mi trabajo

cubiertas alguna vez de blanco, hoy con varias tonalidades de grises y cafés. ¡Nada que una buena capa de colores no pueda solucionar!

Día 1: Nos embarcamos desde Puntarenas a bordo del famoso Undersea Hunter. Me acompaña Geiner Golfín, administrador del Parque Nacional Isla del Coco.

Los daños fueron menores pero a la vez una advertencia seria sobre la vulnerabilidad de la isla.

mystifyingly becomes reality. It is real!! Coco’s Island exists…

As an artist, such a place offers me the ultimate manifestation of possibilities. I want to paint Isla del Coco but… Do I know it well enough? Do I truly understand what it represents in all its depth?

My mission at the park: To donate my services creating murals to beautify the few somewhat old buildings that were once painted white and today exist in a state of various tones of grays and browns.Nothing that a few layers of color can’t change!!

Day 1: We depart from Puntarenas on board the famous

manager of the Isla del Coco National Park. As we are navigating away from the mainland, immersed in a pleasant conversation, Geiner reveals the following: “The island is a living being, you can feel it… The island changes you”.He says this very naturally, with the certainty of the inevitable and of what he has experienced personally.

Day 3: After 36 hours and 340 miles, we come ashore early on the 12th

ocean and the park personnel still agitated from the effects of the tsunami which were felt only a few hours earlier, sent by the Earthquake in Japan. The damage was minor but at the same time, a sharp reminder of the vulnerability of the island.

Día 6: El primer mural ya está casi listo. Entre brochazos y mezclas de colores, he podido visitar las cuevas que excavaron los buscadores de tesoros desde principios de 1900; largos túneles que se adentran hiriendo la montaña. Obsesionados, trabajaron por años sin encontrar nada. Pobres. No entendieron que el verdadero tesoro de la isla, nunca ha estado oculto…

Hoy también pudimos realizar el primer buceo. La vida marina es sencillamente exuberante y es imposible no ver tiburones, rayas, gigantescas langostas y mil seres más. La sorpresa está detrás de cualquier roca, coral o cardumen.

Día 14: Como si la riqueza marina

¿Pueden creer que además, la isla incluye su propio bosque nuboso y al menos 140 especies endémicas. Subimos al cerro Iglesias, el más alto, desde donde se observa buena parte de la isla y el océano. Regresé de la caminata tan impresionado que decidí realizar también un mural sobre esta maravilla.

Dia 23: Escribo mientras regresamos de un patrullaje marítimo a bordo de la Coco’s Patrol. Vengo sentado encima de una montaña de hilo de pesca (11 millas para ser exacto) y muchas boyas de plástico. Un recipiente a mi lado contiene 210 anzuelos. Es material decomisado, hallado dentro de las aguas del parque, que recogimos a mano con los funcionarios y guardacostas, luego de 6 horas de ardua tarea bajo el sol. El saldo de la “pesca” fueron 4 gigantescos atunes, dos aún vivos y liberados, al igual que una tortuga verde. Días antes habían sido tiburones y una red

Un viaje profundo por las aguas del Golfo de Papagayo: Uno de los sitios Top 20 para el buceo en el mundo.

Hhablar de grandes cardúmenes de peces, aguas casi siempre cálidas, un inmenso abanico de vida y muy especialmente, de la oportunidad inusual de tener cercanos encuentros con varios gigantes marinos como cetáceos, manta rayas, tiburones toro o un gentil tiburón ballena.

Curiosamente, esta riqueza de vida submarina parte con un

soplan desde el continente hacia el océano. Estos vientos ,

arrastrándola cientos de millas mar adentro. El retiro de esta gran cantidad de agua causa un vacío momentáneo en la costa, que se rellena mediante el ascenso de masas de agua fría desde las profundidades.

Y es aquí cuando sucede la magia, pues estas corrientes profundas suben cargadas de sedimentos cargados de nutrientes, huevos, larvas y microorganismos, desencadenando una intrincada cadena alimenticia entre decenas de especies

decenas de cetáceos, 4 especies de tortugas y miles de especies de moluscos, crustáceos, esponjas, corales, anémonas, medusas y algas.

En total, los mares de Costa Rica son hogar de 6.778 especies distintas, es decir, un 3,5% de toda la biodiversidad marina conocida. Dicho de otro modo, en este territorio marítimo que representa apenas un 0,0016 del total oceánico, se puede ver a 1 de cada 28 especies marinas del planeta.

¿Visibilidad, cantidad, temperaturas, cercanía de sitios, variedad de especies?

Debido al ascenso de nutrientes desde el fondo y a la riqueza de vida microscópica, la visibilidad en la zona es muy variable (De 4 a 24 mts). Un día puede estar clarísimo y al siguiente encontrarte nadando en una gran caldo orgánico. Sin embargo, la abundancia de vida hace que incluso con muy poca visibilidad, la experiencia sea igualmente buena, llena de avistamientos y encuentros cercanos con muchas formas de vida, desde lo diminuto a lo monumental.

De Junio a Septiembre, se consigue la mejor visibilidad (De 12 a 25 mts), mientras que la más baja suele darse entre Octubre y Febrero (De 5 a 15

mts). Sin embargo, esta es a la vez la mejor época para gozar de contactos cercanos con los grandes especímenes pelágicos que hacen famosa al área.

Fondo. El fondo marino del Golfo de Papagayo está compuesto por islotes de roca volcánica, planicies de arena y frecuentes pináculos coralinos o rocosos. Las profundidades en los sitios de buceo van de los 6 hasta los 34 metros.

Temperatura. Con aguas que se mantienen casi siempre

una amplia rotación de especies en cada estación, Guanacaste es buceable todo el año. Sin embargo, por la frecuente presencia de termóclinas frías , se recomienda siempre usar un traje de 3 mm.

Con 6 operadores PADI en Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa y Ocotal, una completa infraestructura de servicios turísticos y 25 sitios de inmersión muy cercanos, el Golfo de Papagayo es el epicentro indiscutido del buceo en Costa Rica. Aunque también se puede encontrar centros de buceo en otras

Sorpresa (de 13 a 33 mts) Un interesante sitio de buceo profundo alrededor de una gran roca sumergida. Es el hogar de rayas diablo, rayas águila y rayas nariz de vaca, además de grandes morenas de varias especies. Nivel: Avanzado.

Punta Argentina (de 7 a 27 mts) Este islote sumergido es uno de los sitos favoritos en la zona, donde siempre es posible ver caballitos de mar, camarones payasos, peces sapo y pulpos, entre otros.Si el agua está fría, se llena de rayas águila, rayas diamantes y pez guitarra . Cuando el agua está más templada, se puebla con tiburones. También se atraviesa un canal estrecho pero muy lleno de vida. Este uno de los puntos más cercanos donde con algo de suerte, se puede avistar tiburones ballena. Nivel: Fácil a intermedio.

Punta Gorda (de 4 a 21 mts) : Un muy buen sitio para buceo apnea o snorkel. Siempre visitado por grandes escuelas de peces tropicales, diferentes variedades de rayas y abundancia de morenas y pulpos. También hay aquí una planicie de arena cubierta de anguilas de jardín. A un costado en la medida que se asciende, uno se encuentra con una pequeña cueva siempre llena de tiburones bebes. Tiburones (de 7 a 30 mts): En esta gran roca sumergida con rocas mas pequeñas alrededor, no solo es uno de los sitios favoritos de tiburones aleta blanca y gata nodriza, sino también un muy buen sitio para ver rayas águila y rayas diablo. Otro de sus atractivos es que es el hogar de las morenas más grandes del área y así como de varios pulpos y otros invertebrados. Nivel: Intermedio con corrientes.

Tortuga (Turtle) (15-70 feet)Another interesting and very popular site. The primary attraction here is a

sandy canal cuts through the rocks where white-tipped reef sharks often take their mid-morning nap. Among the permanent inhabitants of the boat are seahorses,

Tiburones (Sharks) (25-100 feet)This large submerged rock with smaller rocks scattered around is one of the white-tip reef sharks and nurse sharks favorite places. It is also a good place to see eagle and devil rays. Another attraction to Tiburones is the large moray eels that make this location their home along with many octopus and other invertebrates. Este mail viral (e-mail masivo que busca ser reenviado para obtener direcciones de cuentas activas), es convincente con solo un par de frases incriminatorias: Titulado ‘Vergüenza en Costa Rica’, refuerza la culpa con la frase: ‘Después dicen que las tortugas están desapareciendo por el cambio climático’.

No aporta más información. Solo las fotografías.

Cada vez que lo echan a correr por la red, recibimos cartas de lectores y amigos del mundo buscando una explicación a tal aberración. La primera sorpresa que les damos es que no hay aberración alguna. Al creador del mail le faltó documentación o le sobró mala intensión.

Por ello, nos decidimos a completar su trabajo y explicar el contexto en que fueron tomadas las fotografías. En el camino, descubriremos que lo que parece un acto vandálico es en realidad un plan de

addresses of active email accounts), is very convincing using only a couple of incriminating phrases: With the subject, “Shame in Costa Rica” it further stresses the culpability with the phrase: “And then they say that the turtles are disappearing due to climate change”.

It provides no further information. Only a few photographs.

Every time it is forwarded and set loose over the Internet we receive letters from readers and friends around the world asking for an explanation for such aberration. They are surprised when we tell them that there is no aberration at all and explain that the creator of the e-mail either lacked documentation or had a

surplus of bad intention.

So we decided to complete the email creator’s work and explain the context in which these photos were taken. Along the way we will discover that what appears to be an act of vandalism is in reality a sustainability management plan praised by scientists around the world.

Un áspero camino hasta el mar…La naturaleza se la puso dura a las crías de tortuga: Las mareas altas parten arruinando todos los nidos a su alcance (usualmente de novatas). Otras tortugas cavando destruirán otros cuantos nidos. Colonias de larvas se darán grandes banquetes en algunos. Perros, pizotes y otros cuadrúpedos, olfatearán, desenterrarán y comerán varios más. Y unos cuantos bípedos, pondrán algunos huevos en un sartén…

Al nacer y salir del nido, a algunas crías las recibirá una arena muy caliente y un sol demasiado intenso como para un recién nacido. En verano, muchas no logran atravesar ese peligroso y candente desierto de 20 metros que las separa del mar. Para colmo, aves y cangrejos cortarán el camino de otras tantas recién nacidas. A pesar del difícil panorama, para las tortugas no parece ser tan grave. Así (o peor) ha funcionado su mundo por millones de años y ellas siguen aquí. La naturaleza se las puso dura, pero también las hizo fuertes y luchadoras.

Por eso, a pesar de todo, son cientos de miles las que año tras año vuelven a anidar al lugar donde nacieron. Una playa que nosotros llamamos Ostional y que ellas llaman…hogar.

Dogs, Coatis and other quadrupeds will sniff, unearth and eat many more. And a few bipeds will put some eggs in the frying pan….

When they are born and leave the nest, some of the hatchlings will be met by sand that is way too hot and a sun that is too intense for the newborns. In summer, many will not make it across that dangerous and burning 20 meters desert that separates them from the sea. To top it all off, they will meet birds and crabs along the way that will eat many.
