What are CD-ROMs ?• The term CD-ROM is an acronym for

compact disc read-only-memory.• It is a flat round disc used for storing and

viewing data on a computer.

• These are storage devices whose contents can;– be only be read but not deleted.– be accessed by inserting a CD onto a disc drive.

Disc drives are devices that allow users to read or record data to a CD.

– be copied to other locations e.g. computers.

Information found on CD-ROMs

• CD-ROMs can contain different kinds of information. For example;– Spreadsheets – PowerPoint presentation– Word documents

– Internet Downloads – Computer information backups– Academic Information e.g. college or school

assignments– Software applications e.g. Windows XP.

Putting information on a CD-ROM

Creating CDs or burning is saving information on to a CD for future reference or use. It can be done by;• Copying information on a CD and pasting it onto an

location on a computer.• Using various software packages e.g. Easy CD

Creator, Nero, etc. These allow users to create organized layouts of data.

Viewing CD-ROMs• Open a disc drive and insert the CD with the shining

surface facing downward.• If it does not open automatically, open My

Computer. • In the Devices with Removable Storage section,

double click an Icon representing CDs. The CD will open allowing to view the information.

• Insert the CD and wait for it to Auto play.• On the menu choose Open folder to view files and click

OK. • If there are other folders, double click quickly to view

the files. Or double click a file to view the content.Note: The actions performed above applies in most

cases.

Storing information on a CD-ROM

• This can be done using a blank CD-ROM. • This information once stored can never be deleted.• The information stored varies as explained earlier.• Performing this action requires the a user to;

– Check the size the of the CD-ROM i.e. free space– Check whether the inserted CD-ROM really is blank by opening it– Make sure that the CD-ROM is properly inserted.

• Below are some of the ways information can be stored on CDs;– Go to the location where the information to be stored is saved.– Right click the file or folder. On the Menu move to copy and click.– Go to My computer, under a section called Devices with

removable open the CD-ROM.– In the blank space right click and move to paste. A file or folder

will appear in a section called Files ready to be written to the CD.– Move the cursor to File on the Menu bar and click. Move to Write

these files to CD. – A dialog box called CD Writing Wizard will appear. This dialog box

allows you to name to the CD your information is going to be stored e.g. Unza Assignment 1.

• Click in the box so that the Wizard closes on it finishes writing information.

• Click Next. Once the Wizard finishes to write the information, the CD drive will open.
