WHAT IS THE THEORY?

In 1974 Blumler and Katz came up with a theory that users of the media have a role in choosing and using different types of media. They thought that the user of a particular type of media chooses one that for fills the needs of that user the most.

They found that a user of a particular type of media would have four different needs:- Diversion: the need to escape from everyday life e.g. to relax- Personal Relationships: to for fill companionship and to form a

relationship with the others in order to be a part of a social society- Personal Identity: to find a piece of media which best helps the

user to represent themselves- Surveillance: as a type of news to make the user aware of what is

going on around them, an example is a woman buying a magazine in order to keep up to date this celebrity life

APPLING THE THEORY

Diversion: Buy reading the magazine the audience are able to get away from their everyday life routine and to sit and relax while reading the magazine they are interested in. The images and articles will get them engrossed in the magazine therefore the audience are able to relax by themselves.

Personal Relationships: Many different teenagers and young adults will read a popular music magazine. This is how the audience are able to become to involved giving them a sense they are a big part of something which they can relate and share with others.

Personal Identity: In this magazine they advertise for the audience to get involved with the different things that are involved in the magazine for example to get involved in the music.

Surveillance: This magazine allows the audience to keep up to date with the latest things that are happening in the music world of celebrity life e.g. the interview about Florence means the audience are able to keep up to date with the latest albums and songs etc.

Music magazines are very popular with the younger generation of people including teenagers and young adults. They enjoy reading about their favourite celebrity bands and artists therefore a music magazine is an appropriate magazine for them to buy.
