NATIONAL TEAm

The USA Gymnastics TOPs program (talent opportunity program) is in its 17th year and

continues to identify talented gymnasts who go on to be World and Olympic medalists. The Program was developed by USA Gymnastics in 1992 as a way of finding talented young gymnasts in order to identify them early and provide education to the gymnast and her coach . The program is definitely working as evidenced by the number of former TOPs gymnasts making the USA National Team.

Gary Warren is the USA Gymnastics Elite Program Director and oversees the TOPs program. Warren said,"We monitortheTOPs program and make minor changes from time to time. It is exciting to watch these young TOPs gymnasts develop into amazing athletes and win medals at the international level. It shows the program is working and is headed in the right direction."

TOPs Regional testing took place throughout the summer of 2008 and approximately 2400 gymnasts participated. From those who participated, the top athletes were named to the 7-8 year old National Team, called the Diamond Level. Of the 9-11 year

16 USA GYMNASTICS JANUARY · F~BRUARY 2009

olds, more than 300 were invited to National Testing and 78 made the TOPs National Team. The National Testing was held in Houston, Texas, in October at the Women's National Team Training Center.

At National Testing the gymnasts perform physical abilities tests including pull-ups, leg lifts, flexibility, sprint, rope climb, vertical jump, push-ups and press handstands as well as the required skills on each of the events including vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. The scores are tallied and the top gymnasts in each age division were named to the TOPs National Team.

The camp was held in December and was com prised ofth ree days ofed ucational opportu nities for both the athlete and her coach on basics, sports science and general development of these talented young athletes. USA Gymnastics' National Coaching staff, along with coaching support personnel and sport science professionals, conducted the camp. An additional"B" camp was held for the next level of gymnasts at their own expense, also in December.

The TOPs program has shown dramatic success over the last 17 years and continues to be a big part of the success of the USA women's program.

T hirteen-year-old Jordyn Wieber of Dewitt, Mich.,

won the all-around title with a total score of 59.800 at the 2008 Top Gym competition, in Charleroi, Belgium, Nov. 29-30. Kamerin Moore of Bloomfield, Mich., also 13 years old, finished third in the all-around with 55.150. Both gymnasts train at Gedderts'Twistars USA and are coached by John Geddert.

Wieber said,"lt felt really great to win the all-around."Wieber posted the high score on three events outright and tied for the top score on the floor exercise. Her scores in the all-around competition were: 15.000,

vault; 15.250, uneven bars; 15.000, balance beam; and 14.550, floor exercise. Moore's 14.950 was the second highest on vault and her 14.350 was third highest on beam in the all-around.

During day two of competition, the USA paired with Belgium to win the team title.

In addition to the United States, the other participating countries were Belgium, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, and Sweden. The junior division competition was held at Parc des Sports. i.a

Q: Tell us about the meet format. Jordyn: There were two days of competition. The first day was the allaround competition and the second day was a team competition. Each country had two girls on a team and we did two events each. I was teamed up with my teammate Kami and the girls from Belgium. They added up our scores to determine the winning team and our team won the event. I did bars and beam and Kami did vault and floor.

Q: This is your second international all-around title. How does that feel? Jordyn: It felt really good to win. I was surprised I got the gold in Italy earlier this year and this time I was so excited to win again. It felt great.

Q: Did you do any new skills at this competition? Jordyn: No, I didn't do any new skills. I did the same routines that I've done all year. Now I'm working on upgrades.

Q: What are you working on? Jordyn: I'm working on a double twisting double dismount off bars and a Hindorff on bars. On floor I'm working on a few upgraded passes but I'm not sure what I'll use yet. I'm also working a Yurchenko 2.5 vault.

Q: What did you get to do other than gymnastics in Belgium? Jordyn:The day after competition we went to Brussels and saw the city. We shopped and took photos. I bought gifts and souvenirs for people back home.

22 USA GYMHASTICS JANUARY· FEBRUARY 2009

Q: What were the highlights of the trip? Jordyn: Winning the gold medal and also getting experience traveling internationally.

Q: How was it adjusting to the time zone? Jordyn: I don't get jet lag that much. I caught on fast to the new time zone but when I got home I was really tired all day. My mom let me sleep in just a little bit and I went to school late.

Q:What is your next competition? Jordyn: I don't know. I do know I'll compete in the Visa Championships but don't know what else.

Q: How many hours a week do you train? Walk me through your daily routine. Jordyn: I train about 30 hours each week. Three days a week I have two practices a day so seven hours total of training. I go to the gym in the morning around 8 to 10:30 a.m., then I go to school from 11 to 2:30 p.m. and then I go back to the gym.

Q: What is your favorite skill? Jordyn: I like beam a lot, so anything on beam!

Q: How do you get caught up on homework from 8th grade at DeWitt Junior High School? Jordyn: I ask my teachers ahead of time for my work and then get caught up when I get back. I get straight A's most of the time.

Q: Do your friends at school know what you do? Jordyn: Yes. Most of them have watched me on YouTube.

Q: How do they react when you get home from a trip? Jordyn:They always ask how I did. They are pretty supportive and happy for me.

Q: What do you like to do when you're not in the gym? Jordyn: I like to spend time with family and my dog (I have a dog named Lucy who is a mix of a shitzu and yorkie) .1 like to hang out with friends and go shopping and do scrapbooking.

Q: Do you have siblings? Jordyn: Yes I have an older sister, an older brother and a younger sister.

Q: What are your favorite stores? Jordyn: I like Pac Sun and Target.

Q: What are you asking for this holiday? Jordyn: New clothes and shoes!

(known os Komi to her friends)

Q: Tell me how the meet went? Komi: It was okay. It wasn't my best meet but I got third all-around so that's good.

Q: Was it your first international meet? Komi: Yes, it was my first international competition for USA Gymnastics. It was interesting. You have to go with what is happening when on an international trip. The time change was different so we had to practice late the first couple of practices, but I got used to things pretty quickly.

Q: Did you meet any international gymnasts at this competition? Komi: Yes, that was fun. No one spoke our same language but it was fun trying to communicate. We were teamed up with Belgium and it was fun to be with the girls. They were nice.

Q: What did you get to do other than gymnastics in Belgium? Komi: We did a lot of things. We went to Brussels for shopping and sightseeing. I bought some scarves. I also collect dolls and plates so I bought a doll and plate while in Belgium.

Q: How was the food? Komi: The food was great. They had spaghetti and beef and chicken. I had no problem adjusting to the food.

Q: How was the hotel? Komi: The hotel was good. I shared a room with Jordyn and we had a room with two single beds and they were really small but very comfy.

Q: What are you working on in the gym now? Komi: I'm trying to upgrade my vault to a double twisting Yurchenko and polish and clean up everything.

Q:What is your next competition? Komi: I'm competing at the Cup in Cincinnati in a couple of weeks. It's for Levell 0 and elite. I'm going to the meet just to get more experience.

Q: How many hours a week do you train? Walk me through your daily routine? Komi: I train about 30 hours a week. I do homeschool so that it's easier to spend more time in the gym. We have practice in the morning and afternoon a few days a week - I practice in the morning and then stay at the gym and do school. Then practice again at night. My brothers do gymnastics at my gym, too. I get out at 8 p.m. and they get out at 9 p.m. so we all leave at 9 p.m. So, on some days I arrive at the gym around 8 a.m. and leave at 9 p.m.

Q: What is your favorite skill? Komi: Vault is my favorite!

Q: What do you like to do when you're not in the gym? Komi: I live on a lake so I like to swim in the summer and in the winter I like to skate and sled.

Q: Do you have pets? Komi: Yes, I have 5 pets -two cats, two dogs and a rabbit.

USA Gymnastics exceeds $1 million total for Children's Miracle Network

Gymnastics clubs across the country have raised more than $ 1 million for Children's Miracle Network since the two organizations first partnered in 2001.

Gym clubs and their members raised a record $201,203 in 2008 as part of their celebrations for National Gymnastics Day through the Tyson Fitness Challenge, a joint initiative of USA Gymnastics and Tyson Foods that not only helps today's kids get more physically fit through fun activities, but also raises money to help kids who are fighting illnesses through Children's Miracle Network.

" It is heart-warming to see

kids from our clubs make such

an incredible effort for other

young people who really need help," said Steve Penny, president

of USA Gymnastics. "Children's

Miracle Network is a fantastic

organization that helps save

the lives of kids every day. USA

Gymnastics appreciates everything

the gymnastics community has done

to make this a success and is proud to have achieved this milestone in

partnership with Tyson Foods."

In 2007, USA Gymnastics set its

goal to have the accumulated total of donations to Children's Miracle

Network surpass the $1 million

mark by the end of 2008. This year's

current donation of $201,893, is the

most ever raised annually by the gym

club community for Children's Miracle

Network.

This year three young gymna st s set a wonderful example for our athletes all over the country by raising a combined total of S 12, 125. Let 's meet our top fundraiser, Emma Timblin .

USA Gymnastics: Why did you decide to help raise money for Children 's Miracle Network? Elizabeth: Becau se I thought it would be a good way to help children who don't have what I have and don't get to experience the things that I do.

USA Gymnastics: Who did you ask for donations? Elizabeth: My family, friends, neighbors, friend s' parents, people

out of state. It wasn't hard because a lot of the people I asked were close to us so I knew what to say and I knew how to ask them .

USA Gymnastics: Do you do any other charitable fund raisers through your club? Elizabeth : No, but if there were any I would sign up for them.

USA Gymnastics: If you could change one thing about your experience this year, what would it be? Elizabeth: I would go to more people to help raise more money.

USA Gymnastics: What was your favorite memory from this year?

Elizabeth : Knowing how many children and families I am helping with these donations . It was also a lot of fun .

USA Gymnastics: If you could say anything to someone thinking about participating, what would you tell them ? Elizabeth: I would tell them that it's a great experience and you can have fun doing it, too. fa

By Betsy Bradley, M.Ed., LAT, ATe

Gymnasts are known for their countless hours in the gym; all that swinging, jumping, flipping, and tumbling can leave athletes with pain. Oftentimes

that pain can be managed through over the counte r (OTC) analgesics. Upon entering the drug store, parents, athletes, and coaches may be left bewildered in attempting to determine the best option for their type of pain.

Pain relievers can be used for a

myriad of ailments from the common

cold to injury pain management.

No individual OTC medication is

appropriate for every condition,

so understanding the differences

between medications can help

parents and coaches choose the right

medication for their child in an effort

to manage pain and facilitate return

to activity. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Aspirin,

Ibuprofen, and Naproxen (Aleve)

are common OTC's used in pain

management. Acetaminophen is an

analgesic and an antipyretic (fever

reducer) . It does not provide anti-

inflammatory effects. Over-ingestion

of acetaminophen can lead to liver

damage. All medications have side

effects but acetaminophen is less

likely to irritate the gastrointestinal

tract then other OTC's.

Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)

functions as a pain-reliever, a fever

reducer, and an anti-inflammatory.

However, aspirin is more likely to

irritate the gastrointestinal tract and asthmatics have a greater risk for

allergic reactions among other side

effects. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

(NSAID) such as ibuprofen and

naproxen have anti-inflammatory,

pain -relieving, and fever-reducing

properties much like aspirin but with

fewer side effects . They also have a longer duration of action then

aspirin.

While NSAID medications seem to

have the most benefits when dealing

with musculoskeletal injury, there

are instances when acetaminophen

can be more beneficial. Generally,

inflammation is seen as a negative

with athletic injuries. Many athletes are familiar with the R.I.C.E. principle;

all of these actions are utilized to

decrease the amount of inflammation

at the injury site. However, the

inflammatory response is a necessary

mechanism of injury. Inflammation

clears dead cells and helps restore

tissue so some swelling can be a positive. NSAIDs can also increase

the risk of dehydration, so for multi

sport athletes or activities with

long duration, such as distance

running, acetaminophen can be

more beneficial. Thinning of the

blood occurs with the use of NSAIDs,

so for athletic competitions with

potential for head injury, such as

concussions, acetaminophen is best.

Finally, acetaminophen is best when

managing pain associated with

broken bones; Studies have shown

that NSAIDs can decrease bone

healing.

Reading labels for possible

side effects, drug interactions, and

recommended dosage is always a

must. Being well informed and asking

questions about OTC's to healthcare

professionals can help parents,

coaches, and athletes choose the best medication for their specific

condition . tJ

GYMNASTICS

Have you ever wondered how many gymnasts actually compete in your

discipline or how many gymnasts compete in your level?

»> We've compiled some charts to answer some of you questions. These numbers were taken as of August 2008 from the USA Gymnastics database. The numbers represent all gymnasts in each discipline that actually compete (or perform for General Gymnastics) at USA Gymnastics sanctioned events.

Check out the competition and see what numbers of gymnasts you're up against. But, before you check out the charts and graphs on page 34, see how smart you are. Take the quiz and see what you know!

Remember, these numbers don't include all of the kids that do recreational and preschool gymnastics. These numbers are just those athletes registered with USA Gymnastics who compete or perform and have a USA Gymnastics member number.
