Are There Differences in Training Women Compared to

Men? By: Travis Mash

Mash Elite Performance

I think that all of us understand that there are differences. However it’s not as big as you would think. There is around a 10% difference in training men and women, but adherence to this 10% is crucial for maximal gains. This article will pertain to strength training in general. The principles that we are going to discuss will work for general strength, powerlifting, weightlifting, or the strength and conditioning of a female for any sport. I am going to touch on the science first, and then I will go over my

experience with coaching some of the best women athletes in the country. When you put the two together, you get a powerful answer. Coaching women is a very rewarding job for most coaches because you are a small part of empowering women. You are teaching them that anything is possible, and they don’t have to fit some stereotype to be considered a beautiful woman. Women are also very receptive to their coaches in general as long as there is trust in the relationship. This makes it really easy to get women strong. Let’s start with the science. The two biggest differences in men and women that need to be considered are:

1. Muscle fiber types 2. Sex Hormones

Build A Better Connection With Your Athletes: “I Wish My Coach Knew...”

By Dr. Wade Gilbert, Human Kinetics Coaching Education Center

Have you ever been frustrated, disappointed, or puzzled by your athletes’ behavior? Of course, happens all the time, right? We all experience those moments when we witness one of our athlete’s making a poor decision, showing lack of focus, or just plain acting out of character. In our haste to act quickly and "coach," we often base our response on the many assumptions we hold about each of our individual athletes. We form impressions of our athletes from the moment we meet them, and these impressions are then typically reinforced through a self-fulfilling prophecy referred to as coach expectancies. These early formed impressions are difficult to change and can negatively impact athlete development and performance…. Recently while participating in a quality coaching panel with renowned coaches and coach consultants John O’Sullivan and Jerry Lynch, I was reminded of a powerful strategy coaches can use to counter-act the formation of unfounded perceptions of their athletes. Coach O’Sullivan shared how throughout a season he asks his athletes to complete the following prompt on a sheet of paper:

“I wish my coach knew this about me…”

Athlete Guide to the 2018 Prohibited List

On January 1, 2018, the 2018 WADA Prohibited List goes into effect and athletes will be responsible for understanding and complying with those rules. New Coaching Standards - Feedback Needed! The National Standards for Sport Coaches (NSSC) have helped to identify quality sport coaching within the United States by providing clear directions of the fundamental competencies that quality coaches should possess. While the NSSC have helped to promote

coaching as a profession and provided guidance for many coach education programs, it is time to update the standards to better reflect current practices as well as consider how the NSSC can reach a broader audience (e.g., coaches, athletes, administrators).

SHAPE America developed a National Standards for Sport Coaches (NSSC) Revisions Task Force to update the current coaching standards. Your feedback is needed on the draft version of the NSSC that has been developed. Your responses on this simple survey will help provide direction regarding the skills and knowledge that quality coaches should possess.
