B2C E-COMMERCE OUTPACES OVERALL RETAIL SALES GROWTH
IN THE USA BY A FACTOR OF THREE
The second largest B2C E-Commerce market in the world, the USA continues to see
strong growth in online retail sales despite being already advanced by international
standards. Over three-quarters of U.S. Internet users make purchases online, with more
than 50% of consumers shopping for books, electronics and apparel online at least as much
as in-store. B2C E-Commerce outpaces the growth of overall retail sales at least by a factor
of three, and some sources cited in the yStats.com report predict that the online share of
total retail sales could top 10% by the end of 2017.
Despite this level of advancement, most of the original sources cited by yStats.com
expect online retail sales in the U.S. to maintain growth rates in the double digits over the
forecast period. Some sources even foresee a milestone of 1 trillion dollars in online retail
sales to be surpassed by the USA within the next decade. Nevertheless, due to a more rapid
growth of emerging markets including China, the USA is projected to lose several
percentage points in its share of global online sales by 2021.
Current market trends, such as the emergence of omnichannel commerce and the
rise of mobile shopping are expected to contribute to this growth. By 2021, over one-half of
online retail in the USA is projected to be done via mobile devices, up from about one-third
in 2017. Furthermore, major store based-retailers including Walmart are investing in their E-
Commerce capabilities while also developing omnichannel services such as BOPIS (buy-
online-pickup-in-store), already used by more than 50% of Internet users as of 2017. Still,
Amazon remains in the lead with a market share of around one-third of online retail sales,
with some sources anticipating its share to increase over the next several years.

This report covers the forecasts for B2C E-Commerce sales in
the USA. The report is based purely on secondary market research and
does not contain any sales forecasts produced by the report publisher.
The forecasts cited in this report were produced by various
reputable sources and differ in definition, methodology and the time
period referenced. The sources may refer to B2C E-Commerce sales as
online retail sales, Internet retailing sales, E-Commerce sales or online
shopping/online retail GMV. Some of the sources include both B2C and
C2C sales in their sales definitions, while others excluded or did not
mention C2C in their methodology. The majority of original sources
excluded travel and/or other services from their definition and included
M-Commerce sales.
Most of the forecasts were published within the previous 12
months.
Report Structure
The report starts with the “Overview and International
Comparisons” chapter. It opens with a qualitative overview of the B2C E-
Commerce market in the USA (a text chart). The country’s share of global
retail E-Commerce sales in 2016 and 2021 is revealed. Next, some key
market characteristics, including online shopper penetration, top product
categories purchased online, leading payment methods, the market share
of the top B2C E-Commerce market player and M-Commerce penetration
forecasts are provided.
The next chapter contains an overview of all B2C E-Commerce
sales forecasts included in this report summarized in one table, with a year
span 2015 through 2022. Not all the years were covered by each of the
sources. One source also provided a forecast for the year 2027. Within this
section, the forecasts are ranked so that the most far reaching forecasts in
terms of years covered are presented first. If forecasts from several sources
end with the same year, they are ranked by sales volume predicted for this
year. Besides the sales volumes, the table also includes the names of the
respective sources, definitions where available and CAGR for the respective
