RETIRING IN THE SOUTH HASNEVER BEEN EASIER!In recent years, massive numbers ofretirees have discovered the Southern U.S.as the premier retirement region in thecountry. Investigate your options at

This issue commemorates the 10th

anniversary of Retirement Lifestyles™.

A decade ago Publisher Dan Owens, assisted

by Creative/Production Director Kathy

Sheehan, launched what was then an annual tabloid focusing on

retiring to North Carolina. Thanks to their efforts and others

along the way, the magazine is now published six times a year and reaches

100,000 readers each issue. And not only does it focus on retiring to North

Carolina but retiring to 10 other southern states – South Carolina, Georgia,

Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Tennessee and

Virginia. That’s not all. For the past two years, the slick, four-color magazine has

been rated as one of the five best magazines for 50+ readers in America. (You’re

sure to enjoy looking at pictures of our staff on page 29.)

As you can see from this column, we are still very involved in community

events. Sherrie Norris, our Account Executive,

and I attended the Preview Party for the annual

Southern Spring Home & Garden Show at

Charlotte’s Merchandise Mart in late February,

which benefited the Council for Children’s

Rights in Charlotte. This delightful show, fea-

turing the latest in garden design and outdoor

living, has been around for decades, and atten-

dees at the event picked up some great ideas.

And speaking of anniversaries, some 40-50

years ago, a dance called the “shag” was born

in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Writer Cherie Had

interviewed a couple of veteran shaggers for

her story on the dance that not only remains

popular with active retirees, but has spawned a

large organization called the Society of

Stranders (SOS). Read her enlightening and

entertaining story on page 32.

Our cover story is about “Finding Your

Walden Pond” in retirement. Bill and Diana

Gleasner, a photographer-writer team, share

their story of how they found Lake Norman 30

years ago and why the lake still inspires them.

There’s also a list of Southern lakes that are

worth a look-see when considering an active

retirement.

Walden Pond is

BBill and Diana Gleasner found

their Walden Pond 30 years ago and

plan to live there for the rest of their

lives.

After enduring 20 winters in

Buffalo and spending 10 months in

Kauai, Hawaii, with their school-age

son Stephen and daughter Suzanne,

they decided to look for another place

to live. After ruling out California,

the Pacific Northwest and the

Southwest, they concluded the ideal

location was probably somewhere in

the southeastern United States, a

place offering a warm climate, water,

green grass and trees.

“That was in 1977, long before the

days of the Internet,” recalled Diana

in a recent interview. “I went to the

small library on the island and ran

across a magazine article on retire-

ment that mentioned Lake Norman

near Charlotte, North Carolina. The

lake was so new I couldn’t find it on

the map and the Charlotte realtor I

called didn’t know anything about it.”

Since they could only afford one

airline ticket at that time, Diana flew

to Charlotte and bought a four-bed-

room home with a fireplace on Lake

Norman for $80,000 in Denver’s

Westport community. Four years later

she and Bill found their dream home

just around the corner – a rambling

one-story 3,200-square foot ranch

that sits on two-thirds of an acre, with

290 feet of lake frontage, a pool, boat

Back in 1891, James U. Jackson dreamed up a way to stretch

North Augusta right to the banks of the great Savannah River.

Now, after over 100 years of planning, Hammond’s Ferry is open.

We offer a range of beautiful homes to fit every lifestyle, riverfront

parks and a cozy town center for all to share. Best of all, our public

roads and trails give everyone in North Augusta easy access to the

great Savannah River. Come to think of it, maybe it’s more than a

happy ending. It’s a happy new beginning.

neighbors have moved to the moun-

tains and the coast.)

“We love getting in the boat just

before sunset and going to a restau-

rant on the lake,” said Diana. “Along

the way we’ll stop and enjoy a glass

of wine and watch the sun go down.

Then we’ll have a shrimp basket or

something similar at the restaurant

before we head back home in the

moonlight.”

“As you feel the ebb and flow of

the lake, it’s like being on a small

ocean,” added Bill. “We have taken

several friends, who were thinking

about moving to the lake, on a boat

ride, and it has kicked them over the

edge in deciding to move here….The

experience has great romantic appeal.”

“The lake is always changing,” said

Diana. “I can sit here and watch the

different moods of the lake. I know

when the blue heron or the ducks are

back.”

Not only does the lake help cement

the wonderful relationship Bill and

Diana enjoy, it has been a catalyst for

the many creative projects they have

undertaken, independently and togeth-

er. After leaving a managerial position

with Ingersoll-Rand, Bill took a big

gamble and decided to try his hand at

photography. Now one of Charlotte’s

top commercial photographers, he

serves a host of corporate clients.

“Going from film to digital has

totally energized me,” he confided,

explaining the details of a recent 10-

hour shoot that produced 11 photo-

graphs of diamond jewelry wrapped

around a conch shell on black velvet.

“Bill loves his work,” added Diana.

“He was high for three days after that

photo-shoot.…He even gets excited

about shooting a wrench….His cor-

porate experience has been an asset in

the photography business.”

While living in Buffalo, Diana

authored several books and wrote

articles for a number of outdoor and

boating magazines. Since moving to

Lake Norman, she has written hun-

dreds of travel articles, several guide-

books and a series of children’s books

about Popoki, an adventurous

Hawaiian cat that hops from island to

island. She is currently working on

her fourth cat book – Popoki at

Waikiki.

One of the Gleasners’ most suc-

cessful joint ventures is Lake Norman

– Our Inland Sea, featuring Bill’s

photography and Diana’s words.

Published in 1986, the book is avail-

able at several local gift shops or can

be ordered on-line from Barnes &

Noble and Amazon.

“A lot of marriages fail when the

couple live and work together,” said

Bill. “The secret lies in being able to

shift gears… in making a mental tran-

sition from work to leisure when it’s

time to go out in the boat or get into

the hot tub. That’s when creativity

kicks in and all kinds of ideas pop

out…. It keeps us fresh.” ◆

AAfter pursuing an active retirement

for three years in Hilton Head/

Bluffton, SC, Phil and Billie Ferrone

moved back to the Charlotte, NC,

area, where they had lived for 20 plus

years.

Though the couple had enjoyed a

wonderful lifestyle on the coast, they

wanted to be closer to their children,

grandchildren, friends and home

church. Phil, who had retired from

the U.S. Army in 1980 and then pur-

being an hour’s drive from Fort

medical facilities. Another important

wan

reason for the Ferrones’ move was the

chance to buy another D.R. Horton

home.

FFor the generation that grew up in

the ‘50s and ‘60s, the shag defined

their teen years, much like the

Charleston and the jitterbug marked

an earlier era.

Many members of that generation

have fond memories of closing bed-

room doors, putting a 45 record on

the hi-fi and practicing the smooth

steps of the dance with an always

willing partner -- the bedroom door-

knob.

When summer vacation came, the

exodus to the Myrtle Beach area

began. The camaraderie of days in

the sun, coupled with nights filled

with music, dancing and moonlit

walks, led to the first taste of

romance for many.

Shag dancing was born of humble

roots in this area during the late ‘40s

and ‘50s, a combination of the jitter-

bug and the “dirty shag,” first per-

formed by black dancers in their

clubs. It wasn’t long, however, before

the white kids developed their own

slower, smoother version of the

dance, called simply at first “fast

dancing.” The Myrtle Beach

Pavilion, along with The Pad and sev-

eral other clubs, became “party cen-

tral.”

Nick Atria, a 66-year-old real-

estate attorney from Columbia, has

been shagging for over 50 years and

vividly remembers when he first real-

ized that learning the dance was a

social necessity.

“I was at The Pad in Ocean Drive,”

he explained in a recent interview.

“A bunch of guys were standing

around drinking beer and watching

the dancers. The ‘cool cats,’ however,

were dancing with the girls. It didn’t

take long for me to figure out which

group I wanted to be a part of.”

He went back to his hometown of

Sumter and started doing the basic

shag step “hanging on to a doorknob

with a belt.” After learning the basic

steps, Nick and his best friend started

making up their own.

“We’d go to the teen-age canteen

in Sumter and practice our steps with

the girls,” said Nick. “Once we

learned, we started dating some of the

better dancers….

“Just about everything I’ve ever

done, I owe to the shag. Wherever

you’d go, if you could shag, every-

body became your friend. It opened

up so many doors for me.”

Atria’s best friend from those

Sumter days, Jim Pringle, is a 68-

year-old advertising executive who

now lives on Fripp Island. Jim

remembers being at The Pad the night

it first opened.

Like Nick, Jim was moved to learn

the shag by a member of the opposite

sex. “I was talking to a girl from

Charlotte who asked me if I knew

how to ‘fast dance,’” recalled Jim.

“When I told her I didn’t, she

answered, ‘Well, you’re never going

to get a date.’ I went home and

quickly learned. She was right. You

never had to worry about getting a

date if you could shag.”

About 15 years later, the dance

helped Jim win his wife, Jan. “I was

living in Charlotte and after the Super

Bowl in ’71, my roommate and I

went to a club called The

Drawbridge,” Jim continued. “Jan was

dating a guy who used to be a friend of

mine. I asked her to dance and we’ve

been together ever since. We still go

shaggin’ and find it to be great exercise

at our age.”

Through the years the devotees of

shag dancing grew older, but younger

fans continued to pass on the tradition.

In 1980, The Society of Stranders

(SOS) was organized to foster appreci-

ation of the dance. Begun as a small

reunion of friends, the group’s two

annual parties at North Myrtle Beach

in the spring and fall now draw more

than 12,000 people.

For more information on SOS and a

listing of regional gatherings, visit their

Families Make Lifetime Memories at

Disney Vacation By Carol Timblin

CCan you really put a price tag on a

memorable vacation with the kids and

grandkids?

Absolutely not, said Bobby

Holcombe, associate brand manager

of marketing and communications

with Disney Vacation Club in

Orlando, in a recent interview. He

cited the growing trend for grandpar-

ents to vacation with their grandkids

and the satisfaction they receive from

traveling together.

“Making memories is the best

return on a family vacation,” he said.

“A good vacation is one that solidi-

fies and revitalizes the family….one

that allows family members to recon-

nect with each other….I have had

members tell me that a Disney vaca-

tion revived their family or saved

their marriage!”

Disney Vacation Club, which

boasts 300,000 plus members, works

to bring families together in ordinary

and extraordinary ways. Whether by

sharing meals around the kitchen

table, swimming at the pool, reading

stories, watching movies, doing crafts

or spending a day or two in Disney

parks, families can create memories

that last a lifetime and are passed

from generation to generation.

According to Holcombe, Disney

pioneered the flexible point system

when it launched the vacation club 15

years ago. The point system allows

members to choose when and where

they want to vacation instead of being

locked into certain weeks of the year,

as is the practice with other time-

share properties. New club members

may purchase from 160 to 2,000

points, and then choose how to spend

their points each year. The cost of

seven vacations covers the initial

price of $16,600. They also have the

option of borrowing and banking

points for up to three years, as well as

of $75 to $95 per trip, when applica-

ble. A membership is good for 42

years and can be passed on to other

family members or sold through the

club. Memberships can be renewed

when they expire.

Memberships should not be per-

Holcombe advised. “However, buy-

ing a club membership does allow a

person to lock in vacations at today’s

prices.”

Disney Vacation Club continues to

add new properties to accommodate

family gatherings in Disney parks and

resorts around the globe, including

Hong Kong and Paris. In addition, the

company has partnered with more

than 500 properties in the United

States and other countries, providing

more options to club members.

Currently under construction in

Walt Disney World’s Animal

Kingdom is the eighth club resort.

The African-inspired villas, sched-

uled to open fall 2007, will overlook

the savannah that is home to zebras,

giraffes and other animals. The villas,

which will accommodate up to 12,

will feature thatched-roofs and

hewn-timber structures that

harmonize with the landscape,

plus authentic artwork.

Eventually, a total of 458 vaca-

tion homes will be available in

the Animal Kingdom.

The building of Disney’s

Animal Kingdom Villas

“brings another exciting era

for Disney Vacation Club, as

we continue to explore future

destination possibilities, both

domestically and international-

of Disney Vacation Club. ◆
