board

The scholars will be attending the 2012 academic program at ITB by

following the current curriculum which has been adopted and improved

from the similar program in Iceland and Auckland.

Board agreed that geoscience training is to be held on June 18-27, 2012,

with involvement of joint instructors from company as recommended by

board and from ITB as well. (Due to there was an event from EBTKE on the

same date, the geoscience training was pending to after fasting month (Ramadan),

therefore the training is rescheduled to be held on September 3-12, 2012)

Board agreed that the 2nd ITB Geothermal Seminar will be held in Padang

by September 2012.

All the board agreed to support for this program as advisor and project director.

Heribertus Dwi Yudha from Star Energy started his presentation by giving a brief information about Star Energy business area in Indonesia. Besides Wayang Windu geothermal field, Star Energy is also developing Jailolo as the next project of geothermal development. Since there were some participants who were not familiar with geothermal energy, he explained some basic knowledge about geothermal energy to give more information about this renewable energy. After giving a short lecture about geothermal, he added some interesting point of view from the developer’s perspective in how to develop a geothermal business, from exploration, to practical developments concepts and risks, and also development fundings and carbon offsets.

As for case study, he also shared about exploration stage in Wayang Windu and Jailolo. He closed his presentation with CSR concepts and Carrier opportunities

in geothermal business in industry.

Lukman Sutrisno from Star Energy started his presentation of The History of Exploration in Wayang Windu Geothermal Field. As for introduction, he began his explanation with the current status of Wayang Windu development. He stated that Wayang Windu is one of the biggest producing geothermal field in Indonesia. It is located 40 km from Bandung, west of Kamojang (owned by Pertamina Geothermal Energy) and Darajat (Chevron), with the elevation of +1700 meter above sea level. Since 1982, Pertamina (and UNOCAL) has conducted several surveys, such as geological mapping, geochemistry (fluid), geo-electric, gravity, MT, shallow temperature gradient well drilling. In the presentation, he also reviewed the history of geothermal exploration starting from initial surveys, exploration drilling, additional geosciences survey,

TASK 5: SABBATICAL PROGRAM FOR ITB FACULTY TO VISIT USC

Objectives:

Improve the quality of faculty through visiting scholars in strong partnership with other international institutions.

Plan:

In 2012, a faculty member from ITB will visit USC for a short term (up to 3 months) sabbatical program. Budget: US$ 25k/year for one faculty member/year.

Implementation: Dr. Rina Herdianita (Geochemistry) was appointed out by ITB to visit USC for Sabbatical Program in July – August 2012. USC assigned Iraj Ershaghi (Geochemistry) for implementing Sabbatical program, however due to Herdianita’s tight schedule, the plan was temporarily postponed. In December 2012, ITB then requested Dr. Rachmat Sule to replace Dr. Rina Herdianita to undertake Sabbatical Program to USC. Dr. Rachmat Sule will take Sabbatical program in early March, 2013. USC faculty Dr. Fred Aminzadeh will concurrently visit ITB. On the other side, Dr. Aminzadeh is expected to give a lecture and training short course for students and industry representatives during his visit to ITB in late September, 2013.

It should be noted that this program was originally scheduled for 2012. Due to the busy schedules of ITB and USC faculty in 2012, this program will be implemented in 2013.

FEEDBACK (Examples): Ahmad Zaenudi (Geophysics of Universitas Lampung): “After my participation at the short

course program held by magister of geothermal technology at ITB, I presented my training experience at

Geophysics Workshop 2012 organized by Geophysics Engineering, Universitas Lampung. I felt that I

had to share my experience for the students of Unila because the benefits I gained by that program are

very worth it. Also, I decided to upgrade my material lesson in Geothermal Exploration (TEG-432) to

be the compulsory course in Geophysics Engineering semester VII”.

Udi Harmoko (Geophysics of Universitas Diponegoro): “Students are more enthusiastic to

my lecture after I added the material course I gained from the short course held by ITB. The more

exciting experience was when some students delivered their questions after the class. They looked very

motivated to know more about the course I have given to them. I am so excited to see them so motivated

to study more”.

Kusnahadi Susanto (Geophysics of Universitas Padjajaran): “We, the lectures, agreed to add

the credits for Geophysics course from 2 credit semester to 3 credit semester. Now, we are conducting the

simulation of heat transfer in geothermal energy process and MT survey. We are expecting more papers

from students about geothermal energy can come up by the end of this year”

C. Results/Outcomes: 1. Improvements have been achieved by fourteen faculties of eleven universities in

Indonesia in the understanding of geothermal system (from exploration to development)

2. Four modules/course materials have been developed by ITB to be used by the training participants in their own universities.

TASK 10: DEVELOP A SEMESTER LONG COURSE ENTITLED “INTRODUCTION TO GEOTHERMAL SYSTEM” AVAILABLE TO

ITB STUDENTS

Plan:

Develop a course entitled “Introduction to Geothermal Systems” at USC and make it available to ITB over the USC Distance Education Network (DEN). This course will be designed to provide graduate students with an overview of geothermal exploration and development. Implementation: Faculty at USC developed a graduate-level course entitled “Introduction to Geothermal Systems” and received approval from the USC Curriculum Committee to offer this course under PTE 506. This course is designed to provide graduate students with an overview of geothermal reservoirs, exploration and production, heat and mass flow in fracture network, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), geophysical and geological methods for exploration and exploitation of hydrothermal and EGS fields, well stimulation, forecasting and power generation.

TASK 12: USC CENTER FOR GEOTHERMAL STUDIES ANNUAL TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP WITH FOCUSED ON INDONESIA

Plan:

Focus the USC Center for Geothermal Studies (CGS) Annual Technology Workshop on the issue relevant to geothermal development and exploitation in Indonesia. Presentations will include those by ITB lecturers, graduate students, and Indonesian industry experts. Implementation:

During the GRC meeting in Reno, USC and ITB delegates held a meeting to plan CGS Annual Technology Workshop. It was agreed that in order to maximize ITB student and faculty participation, it is best to hold the workshop in Indonesia and combine it with conferences planned by ITB, like the ITB Geothermal Workshop (Task 3). It was decided that the ITB-USC sabbatical programs (Task 5) will be used in part to develop joint research projects which can be presented at the workshop.
