Roasting New Mexican Hatch Chiles:The Southwest’s Best Kept Secret

Authentic New Mexican Hatch Chiles are a favorite Southwestern chile. These chiles are named after the original growing area in Hatch, New Mexico. Growers say that the intense sunlight and cool nights in this valley result in a uniquely flavored chile. The valley, which stretches along the Rio Grande’s southern-most bend before crossing into Texas and Mexico, is covered with row after row of green

leafy Hatch chile plants for most of the summer. Hatch chiles are a distant parent to the Anaheim chile with a meaty flesh and mild to medium hot heat. Hatch chiles can be used in a broad range of Latin dishes. They can be easily seeded and added to soups, stews and dips or enjoyed whole when roasted with meats or stuffed with cheese. Unlike other chile

varieties, New Mexican Hatch Chiles are only available for 6 weeks each year during the months of August and September. In the Southwest, it is not uncommon to see consumers buying 30 to 40 pounds of Hatch chiles at one time due to the short growing season. Then the chiles get roasted at home or even roasted in large chile roasters outside the store to prepare them for storage. The storage of these chiles handles well in the freezer and then they can be taken out as needed for recipes.

Six exciting New Mexican Hatch Chile Roasting events are being held in front of selected Bristol Farms stores. Here are the locations, dates and times in Southern California:

September 5 & 6, 2009 Time: 10am - 4 pm

Bristol Farms, 606 Fair Oaks Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030, (626) 441-5450

As the providers of the New Mexican Hatch chiles, a few Melissa’s will be on hand at the roasting stations at each of the Bristol Farms select locations and will be available to help answer questions about this exciting chile variety.

Things Are Coming Up “Juicy” For Pianist Earl R. Johnson Jr.

In what is rapidly becoming a banner year of accomplishments and accolades, internationally-known pianist/composer Earl R. Johnson Jr. won the “2009 Jazz Artist of the Year” at the recent 5th Annual South Bay (Los Angeles) Music Awards in Southern California. The talented musician was selected as one of only six Finalists to compete in the “6th Annual Capital Jazz Challenge in Columbia, MD. Johnson is a Nominee in the “Jazz Artist of the Year” category for the “19th Annual Los Angeles Music Awards”

this November at the world-famous Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, Calif. Johnson was also nominated in the “Best Male Artist” category for the online music magazine 2009 ROCKWIRED Readers Poll. Johnson – who has received invitations to perform at two Festivals in 2010 in Melbourne, Australia -- is a Featured Artist at the 2009 Inland Empire Community Festival, taking place August 28 through 30 at the Ontario Mills Mall.JUICY (First Domain Records) is Johnson’s highly-anticipated debut CD release. Cognitive and funky, Johnson has been heralded as one of the premiere composers/bproducers of this era due to his electric, fiery performing style.JUICY is an eclectic look into the mind of this prolific producer and songwriter, taking the listener on a complete musical journey with ten original masterpieces. Earl makes the piano sing with all of the finesse and fluidity of a modern-day virtuoso; each song pulls you deeper into Johnson’s musical world, leaving its listener in high anticipation of what’s to come next. Whether listening to one of the highly-charged (virtually danceable) red-hot tracks (“That Thang”); soulful, pensive ballads (“Requiem”), or funk/jazz/r&b-tinged title track, there’s literally something for everyone on JUICY.

BILLBOARD MAGAZINE called JUICY “a tempting mix of instrumental and vocal tracks

as it skillfully shifts from smooth to funky with its shadings of R&B and hip-hop.” “Pianist Earl R. Johnson, Jr. espouses a highly rhythmic approach to contemporary jazz that keeps the bass line front and center, reverberates with hip-hop drum effects, swirls with keyboard authority and allows plenty of space for lyrical instrumental voices,” writes ALL ABOUT JAZZ. “His ethereal piano melodies allow the session to cool frequently, while rhythms heat up on occasion and surrounding forces bring tension. Thus, Johnson forces a balance that keeps his session smooth but interesting, romantic but appealing, lyrical and highly rhythmic.” National publication MUSIC CONNECTION opines, “packing a prodigious sideman resume’, Johnson spotlights himself on a collection of (mostly) instrumentals…”Juicy” is his strongest outing: silky-smooth, funky, and very danceable…bonded together by Johnson’s proficient piano, and crafted to hook the listener, the tune is a winner..each track is exceptionally recorded, with pristine piano tone.” Radio has taken to “JUICY,” with adds at Smooth Jazz Expressions (Springfield, Il); KKJZ-FM (Long Beach, CA); WEAA-FM (Baltimore, MD); WINR-FM (Houston); WERG-FM (Erie, PA); The Jazz Network (London, England); WBCX-FM (Oakwood, GA); JS108atlanta.com; JS108losangeles.com; Indie Showcase; and Awesomeradio.net (Sydney, Australia).

Let us help you cut your hiring costs by using our

ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING program

Hiring people is expensive. The County of San Bernardino, Workforce Development Department has a program designed to help your business with those costs. Our On-The-Job-Training program will reimburse a portion of the wages that you pay to your new employees while they learn their job. This may sound too good to be true! But it is true and easy! Outlined below is some information on how this program can work for you.

What is on the job training?On-the-job-training is a program offered by the County of San Bernardino, Workforce Development Department to assist businesses with their new hire training costs. Often when businesses hire new employees there is a period of time when the employee is learning the job and they are not as productive as more experienced employees. This program will help you recover some of those costs associated with training your newly hired employees.

How does it work? The county will reimburse up to 50% of the wages paid, for a period of up to 3 months, while you train the employee in their new job. There is practically no paperwork or record keeping involved. You tell us what you will train the employee on. Then send us an invoice for the hours worked and we reimburse you for the agreed amount. There is no obligation to retain an employee that is not working out or is unable to perform the work assigned. There is also no obligation to hire anyone that is referred to you for consideration.

What are the Requirements?•Prior to the first day of work, the

employer agrees to an arrangement with the County of San Bernardino to train the newly hired employee, the amount of reimbursement and the length of the training period.

•The employer must show proof of workers compensation and tax identification number.

•The starting wage must be minimum wage or greater.

•The job must be at least 32 hours per week and be considered permanent. Hours worked over 40 hours in a week are not reimbursable.

• A record of the hours worked must be submitted to receive a reimbursement.

Wise Protection for Businesses Many business owners carry a standard Business Owners Policy (BOP) or General Liability (GL) policy. Most don’t know about the Employment Practices exposures are not covered by types of policies. Business owners are often unaware of gaps in coverage that can leave them exposed to substantial losses. These loses can destroy a growing company and even danger the personal assets of a business owner. Employee lawsuits are at an all time high, placing businesses in danger of financial jeopardy. Today businesses are faced with many new laws and regulations. Many times as an employer, we practice good hiring practices. But today there is more and more claims filed for age, gender, race discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination and retaliation for workers’ compensation claims, it could possible due to the economic times, with workers running out of unemployment insurance and having limited resources. Employers can purchase Employment Practices Liability that protects against these types of claims made by current, former and potential employees. The coverage extends to your company, employees and directors. These policies provide defense cost and damages if awarded. Full prior acts coverage can be endorsed into the policy along with a 24 hour toll free hot line that provides expert advice about EPL questions, concerns or issues. Employers may think that they are a small employer and it could not happen to them, but according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ( EEOC) private business with 100 or less employees are the most often sued and the average cost of an EEOC lawsuit exceeded $140,000.These policies premiums are based on the number of employees and can be very cost effective and well worth the peace of mind. As business owners, we have a lot of hats to wear.
