This month we are continuing to interact with stories we read as a class. We are practicing responding to stories, making predictions, asking questions, and retelling stories with the beginning, middle and end, while also identifying characters and settings. Our next Storytown Reading test is coming up the week of Dec 11 th . We are really focusing on reading smoothly and recognizing our sight words for 1 st grade. Practice reading at home so that you do not get stuck on every word. Reading fluency is important so that we can become better readers. Try reading as many words on your own at home and look at each word carefully to figure out what it says. Practice reading your sight words because those are words that we cannot sound out. Find them in the stories you read, and practice writing them too. M RS . A NDERS R OOM 7 1 ST G RADE G AZETTE We are full swing into the 2 nd marking period and we love being meteorologists. We have been taking weather walks and learning how to observe the weather. We have been exploring thermometers and how we use them to read the air temperature. Practice talking about how to feel the temperature at home. Talk about how to read a thermometer and the difference between hot and cold. We did a water experiment with thermometers. We will be learning about rain gauges and how to measure rainfall, as well as learning about how you can change water to freeze or melt. What’s Up in Room 7 We are full swing into the 2nd marking period. Hard to believe winter break is right around the corner, and we will soon be into 2018. So much to learn and so little time. We are now going to be learning about how addition and subtraction are closely related, and how we can use fact families to solve addition and subtraction sentences. Give them materials and have them think through the problem. Have them talk through what they are thinking and how they are going to solve the problem. Writing:We are still talking about writing with complete sentences and additing punctuation with capital letters and making sure our sentences make sense. We are still working on practicing writing how to pieces and learning that we are teaching somebody to do something when we write a how to piece. We are learning direction words and how to put steps in order. We will have a graded writing piece for a how to story.

The character value for December is cooperation and friendship. The student that consistently displays these skills throughout the month of December will be awarded a certificate at the end of the month. Talk about ways to cooperate and be a good friend at home

schoolwide rules are Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible! Remember all the things you can do to show yourself as a star student. Keep practicing all the positive behaviors.

Remind yourself: 5 star listening: eyes on the teacher, ears listening, mouths closed, hands folded, feet on the floor. Remember how you can show your 5 star listening so we can all learn and succeed.

Homework New homework packets for math and reading are sent home weekly, and should be returned in their folders every Friday. The skills in the homework will match what we are currently learning and skills that can be practiced and reviewed. Homework is not graded, however, will be checked each week for completion. You do not have to do all the homework in one night. It is broken down nightly. Make sure a parent or guardian signs off showing that the homework for the week has been completed.
