The New Zealand Mountain Film Festival has always been a celebration of adventurous sports and lifestyles but this year it steps up a notch with the best quality and the largest number of films submitted in the Festival’s history - 74 films have been selected as official finalists for this year’s Festival in Wanaka.

Epic journeys are a strong theme running through the Festival. Grand Prize winner

Footprints on the Ridge documents the strong will and despair, endurance and pain that challenged two friends on a winter alpine ridge traverse in Slovakia. Australian adventurer Tim Cope presents a live talk on his remarkable 6000 mile horseback journey retracing the trail of Genghis Khan. Mission Antarctic recounts a snowboarding and mountaineering adventure of the most extreme kind.Wanaka’s own filmmaking talent again features across the Festival with Hugh Barnard hosting part of the two day Adventure Film School; Tim Pierce directs an Alaskan snowboarding movie Mates in Alaska , a finalist in the NZ Made Film awards; and Mark Sedon’s Koura Ma (White Gold) details the first known attempt to climb and ski eighteen 2500m peaks in the Southern Lakes. The last couple of weeks have been a mix of good and bad incidents. Unfortunately the last week has seen some pretty negative stuff. Here is what has kept us busy:

On 26th June we attended two vehicle crashes within 5 minutes near Bridge 8 at the top end of Cardrona Valley. Black ice was the cause of the crashes and fortunately there were no injuries. Beware of the area known as 'the icebox' up that way - it’s signposted!

On the 28th June I attended a vehicle crash on Cardrona Valley Road near James Road, where the road iced up between 8.30am and 9.30am. With the water running across the road beside the highly eroded bank, the temperature suddenly dropped and ice

note of the area as one to treat with caution. The area known as 'The Larches' is also a trouble spot and another place to reduce speed well before the corners - not at the corners - it’s too late then!!

On 29th June, three young people were seen to decamp from under the roller door on the Alivate building in Ardmore Street. All

At 2am on Sunday morning, 29th June, a male standing on the corner of Brownston Street and Helwick Street was knocked out with a punch from a tall bearded male. The victim suffered a badly broken nose and was treated by Ambulance staff. I would like anyone who witnessed the incident to contact me on 443 7272 so

between males. One person was arrested, receiving a pre-charge warning for his idiocy.

So in summary, there are too many people (mainly males) being violent towards other people in this town at night time, and Police will not tolerate such behaviour. In relation to road policing, we have already witnessed too many people driving too fast for the conditions, and not taking care to get to the snow safely and returning home safely - remember, the snow will not melt before you get there and the supermarkets close at 9pm. Remember that
