TyRE InFLATIOn PRESSUREYour car tyres require proper inflation pressure to operate effectively and  perform as intended. Properly inflated tyres keep the vehicle, passenger, and cargo load safe by ensuring optimal performance of your car’s braking, acceleration, and turning force systems.

Driving on tyres with improper inflation pressure is dangerous for two main reasons. One, under-inflation causes excessive build-up of heat in your tyres eventually leading to internal structural damage. On the other hand, over-inflation makes it more likely for tyres to be cut, punctured, or even broken by sudden impact. Overall, improper inflation pressure may also adversely affect your car’s fuel consumption and make it difficult for you to handle your vehicle on the road.  It is for this reason that every vehicle has a maximum pressure indicated on the vehicle’s manual. This is the maximum permissible inflation pressure as recommended by the car manufacturer. What this means is that the tyre pressure may be slightly lower than, or the same as the maximum pressure indicated, but not more than that.

The vehicle manufacturer’s specifications of tyre pressure is limited to your particular vehicle and takes into account your vehicle’s load, ride, and handling characteristics, among other criteria. Since there

may be several possible vehicle applications for a given tyre size, a vehicle manufacturer may choose a different inflation pressure specification for that same size tyre on a different vehicle. Therefore, always refer to the inflation pressure specifications on the vehicle tyre information placard and/or in your vehicle owner’s manual.

Also make a point of checking your tyre pressure at preventative maintenance intervals and during pre-trip vehicle inspections. Under normal conditions, tyres can lose up to 2 psi of pressure per month and another 2 psi for every 5° centigrade drop in temperature. A puncture, leaking valve, or other damage could also cause inflation pressure loss. If your tyres lose more than 4 psi per month, it could be that the tyre, tube (if applicable), valve, or rim may be damaged. Consult a qualified tyre service professional such as Kingsway Tyres to rectify any inflation related problems.

Corporate Social ResponsibilityGOInG GREEn, STAyInG GREEnKingsway Foundation has partnered with The Lions Clubs of Kenya and the Aga Khan Development Network to plant 15 million trees all over Kenya in three years. The ini-tiative began in March this year at the JKIA Triangle located along Mombasa Road. Nairobi governor, Dr. Evans Kidero was the guest of honour at the launch. The CSR initiative not only aims to increase the forest cover in the country but also improve the aesthetic quality of our living and working spaces.

THE GIFT OF SIGHT At the tender age of two, Abel Osore went blind when both his corneas were injured and damaged permanently. Growing up was very difficult for young Abel because he relied a lot on others to care for him.

However, through the support of the Kingsway Foundation and Lions Eye Hospital, Abel recently had a successfully cornea transplant that restored his sight. His vision now is to educate himself and become a doctor so he can help other less fortunate members of society.

CUSTOMER TRAInInGAs part of its Customer Service Programme, Kingsway Tyres conducted two training sessions in April this year with 2TS SACCO & MTN SACCO members. Patrick Macharia and Alice Muchoki of Kingsway Tyres conducted the trainings. Vehicle owners, fleet managers, drivers and conductors received knowledge on tyre care (regular checks, balancing, alignment, tyre pressure) and how this impacts their road safety as well as that of their passengers and other road users.

FOR THE LOVE OF LEARnInGKingsway Foundation donated Ksh. 35,000 to go towards the purchase of text books by the Ananda Marga Organisation. Ananda Marga is a global relief team whose mission is to help improve the quality of life for the poor and disadvantaged people of the world, and those affected by calamity and conflict. In Kenya, the Ananda Marga organization takes care of less fortunate children living with HIV/Aids. The organization is based in Kangemi. Ananda Marga encourages and enables individuals and communities to har-ness their own resources for securing the basic necessities of life and for gaining greater economic, social and spiritual fulfillment, while honoring their customs, language, and religious beliefs.

Shreeji Enterprises are among several beneficiaries of Kingsway’s Tyre Management Program. On one of its Volvo trucks, brand new Michelin truck tyres were fitted in February 2012. As a result of constant tyre maintenance and an excellent client relationship between the transport team at Shreeji Enterprises and Kingsway Tyres’s technical teams the tyres were removed for retread in February 2014 which had covered 230,455 kilometers, the highest mileage achieved by Shreeji Enterprises fleet.

As a complete package, the tyre casings were retreaded with Recamic XDY3 pattern used in a drive axle and had covered 209,963kms making a total of 440,418Kms. With the tyre management program our constant endeavor is to reduce the down time and reduce cost per kilometer for the vehicles. Our focus is to offer our customers clear advice on the right tyre pattern to fit for the correct application and give the total tyre solution to the customer.

Tyre retreading is the process where selected and inspected worn tyre casing receive a new tread. Tread is the rubber on a tyre’s circumference that makes contact with the road. Retreading costs 70% less than buying new tyres would, thereby reducing overall tyre cost. Recamic retreaded tyres would give you 80% of new tyre life. ISSA PREMjIIssa Premji is Kingsway Tyres’ Chief Security Officer. The energetic and friendly Issa joined the company back in 2010. His mandate is to oversee the security requirements of the company’s head office and its branches.Security has been Issa’s forte for quite a while now having being in the field for over 22 years. “I loved security matters from a young age,” admits Issa who was once a boy scout. “I loved the uniform and the authority that came with it.” Though Issa loves his job, he admits that his biggest challenge is that he doesn’t sleep enough. Besides being in the office all day, he regularly conducts night patrols to monitor the security installations in all Kingsway Tyres branches.“These are dangerous times in our country and there are suddenly lots of guns in the wrong hands,” Issa says. “It’s important for everyone to be vigilant and to take extra caution as they go about their business. Kingsway Tyres has various preventative measures and well defined procedures to deal with sudden eventualities. However, we always remind our staff and customers that before anything else, their life comes first.”Besides having its own security team, Kingsway Tyres also works hand in hand with KK Security Company as well as the police. As a volunteer of the Aga Khan Community Security Group, Issa was among the very first people to arrive at the Westgate Mall when the shopping center was attacked by gunmen last year. The rescue efforts of the neighbouhood’s security volunteers played a significant role in rescuing the lives of many Kenyans. Issa is also member-in-charge of the Kenya Red Cross community in Parklands. With his skills and experience, there is no doubt that Issa is a valuable asset to Kingsway Tyres.

SAFETy TRAInInGIn the interest of the safety and security of all its employees, Kingsway Tyres conducted a staff fire training forum at the end of March this year. The company’s Chief Security Officer, Issa Premji took staff through the one day training programme at Kingsway’s Funzi Road warehouse. In line with this, each Kingsway branch will set up health and safety committees for all branches in Nairobi. Members of the committee will be drawn from interested staff who have undergone all health, safety and security trainings.

The Tyrexperts

Non-sales Kingsway Tyres staff enjoyed a free tyre training seminar conducted by Anil Sharma in May 2014. Among the beneficiaries of the programme were Finance, HR, Marketing, Audit and IT departments. The staff got to learn, understand and continually remember about basic tyre care and maintenance – valuable knowledge to share within their networks and with friends and family. As the old adage goes, charity begins at home.
