Early start-up in 2020: As requested LS2 Schedule 2.4:
Early start-up 2020:
Approved by the CERN Research Board, LS2 Committee and IEFC
Low E Beam commissioning and development tests with stable beam as of end-Aug 2020
For Hardware commissioning we hope to have beam from FE10 (GPS) as of April (depending
on FE readiness and vacuum maintenance (primary pumps) (scheduled May, possibly April)
HIE-ISOLDE Beam commissioning and development tests with stable beam as of July 2020
Physics 2021:
Low E Physics start end April 2021
HIE-ISOLDE Physics start mid-May 2021
Gain:
~ 4 months HIE ISOLDE Physics, ~1 month Low Energy Physics
Better performing machine, better understanding of the machine
parameters resulting in higher quality beams and shorter set-up times
ISOLDE low energy

HIE-ISOLDE
Physics start
Necessary main CERN electrical interventions, manoeuvres and safety tests planned in the first half of 2020
would cause serious perturbation for the HIE ISOLDE cryo plant
Mitigation:
AUG (Arret d’Urgence) tests weekend 23/24th May have been moved forward to weekend 16/17th May to
minimize the impact on HIE ISOLDE Cryo
Within the HIE ISOLDE Cryo cooldown process the critical period of sending cold gas and He into the
CMs will be postponed to 18th May to avoid any critical situation
Effect on the overall HIE ISOLDE planning will be a delay of 1 wk for the end-of-cooldown date (from 29th
May to 8th June). The delay will be absorbed in the planning since parts of the 2wks RF tests at cold take
place during the cooldown process
Back-up network tests set for the 26th May will be moved to Monday 25th May to accommodate LINAC4
commissioning
Planning issues:
+1 wk to 08/06/20
EN-EL interventions planning HIE ISOLDE installation and recommissioning planning

Conclusions: All Low Energy and REX / HIE ISOLDE LS2 tasks are on track
Highlights since last ISCC:
New scanners and FC units have been installed in all Low E beamlines
Separator zones will follow. Operational for 2020. A new Semgrid target will be
built, ready for the 2021 proton beam
REX 3 new Diagnostic boxes have been assembled and vacuum tested.
Supports have been adapted. Ready for installation mid-March
HIE ISOLDE Cryo Module 4 is back in position after repair and tests in SM18
(Walter Venturini & BE-RF team). Reinstallation and connection of infrastructure
on schedule. Point of attention: Crystat He release safety valve(s): Under repair.
No effect on schedule to be expected.
Early start-up 2020 approved by CERN Research Board, IEFC and LS2C
Aiming for REX/HIE ISOLDE HW tests as of April, cooldown May 2020 followed
by Beam Commissioning and Test & Development run as of July 2020.
For the Low E part hoping for early HW tests as of April and Beam
Commissioning as soon as FE10 comes online and vacuum maintenance has
finished (due to LS2 load this is scheduled for May but possibly April to finish)
