Charleston, West Virginia Our Mission The mission of the University of Charleston is to educate each student for a life of productive work, enlightened living, and community involvement. Productive Work The University prepares students to contribute to society immediately and throughout their lives. Their work will vary tremendously, but we hope that each graduate will improve his or her world. “Productive” work isn't defined by the acquisition of great material gain for the graduate, but by the positive impact of the work on the graduate's community and world. Enlightened Living

College graduates must own a broad range of knowledge to thrive in modern society. Graduates should be scientifically, economically, politically, aesthetically, and culturally literate. They should have a sense of history and shared values, and a commitment to moral purpose and personal character. Community Involvement Finally, the University attempts to develop within every student a pattern of community involvement. The foundation of our democratic society rests on community involvement, so we want graduates to take leadership responsibility and initiative in shaping organizations, institutions, and communities.

Shared Values and Goals The University's mission is an expression of shared values and goals. These include: Offering selected quality programs affording professional preparation in a liberal arts environment. Preparing students to live in an increasingly complex and changing society by helping them develop the knowledge, abilities, and character needed to be lifelong learners. Utilizing and enriching the strong relationship between the University and the Greater Charleston community to prepare students for a life rich in community

involvement. 2

He studied International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Higher Education Administration at the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. His Ph.D. is in Social Ethics and he is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. Dr. Welch served in the Executive Office of the President at The White House from 1961 until 1971 in the administrations of Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. Dr. Welch began his teaching career at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Prior to coming to Charleston, he served for eight years as the Provost at Wartburg College in Iowa. Dr. Welch has been President of the University of Charleston since 1989. He has led the institution through a period of unprecedented fundraising, expansion of full-time student enrollment, redefining the institution’s mission, transforming its academic program, adding graduate programs in pharmacy, physician’s assistant and business, constructing 7 of the 11 buildings on campus, and acquiring national recognition for UC’s leadership in outcomes-based learning and student assessment. He led the creation of a central administrative computing corporation (i.e., ICE) which serves seven colleges and universities. Dr. Welch serves on many boards, including BB&T Corporate Board of Directors, Chairman of the Quality Committee for the Charleston Area Medical Center Health Systems, Association of Governing Board’s Council of Presidents, West Virginia Financial Education Foundation Board and BB&T-West Virginia’s Advisory Board.

In May 2006, Dr. Welch was given the first-ever Charles L. Foreman Award for Innovation in Private Higher Education by the Foundation for Independent Higher Education. A year later, Dr. Welch was the recipient of the 2007 YMCA Spirit of the Valley Award in recognition of his exemplary community service, and his selfless concern and care for the Charleston community. He has the unique distinction of having a tug boat named for him. President Welch’s wife, Janet, earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland. She is a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she was a tenured faculty member in the English Department. She has championed an aesthetic dimension at the University of Charleston and has received national recognition for the creation of the Erma Byrd Gallery for West Virginia Women Artists. The Gallery displays works from 159 of the state’s most outstanding women artists. Dr. Welch takes great pride in the ongoing transformation of the University of Charleston into a leader in private higher education.

A native of Massachusetts, Stevens was recruited to what was then known as Morris Harvey College to play volleyball in 1976. As a player, she won both WVIAC and Mid-West Regional First-Team honors. After stints teaching in high school in Boston and in Kanawha County, Stevens was recruited to coach the University of Charleston volleyball squad in 1992. She has held multiple roles at UC, progressing from coaching volleyball and swimming to physical education instructor in 1996, assistant professor of sports administration in 2000, and associate athletic director in 2005. Stevens meanwhile earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology and a doctorate in education administration, putting those skills to work in the classroom and as senior woman administrator in the UC athletic department. Stevens coached the Golden Eagles volleyball team for 19 seasons and holds a career record of 506-210. Her teams have made the NCAA volleyball tournament seven times, won the conference title in 1997, 2001 and 2006, and won the conference championship in 2004, 2005 and 2007. Bren was named WVIAC Coach of the Year three times (1995, 1997, and 2001), and was inducted into the University of Charleston Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2011, Dr. Stevens earned her 500th career win, during UC’s match with Alderson-Broaddus, which puts Stevens 13th on the NCAA Division II list of most wins for active coaches. Outside the University of Charleston, Stevens has served as the vice chair of the NCAA Division II Management Council, served on the NCAA II Planning and Finance Committee, NCAAII Championships Committee, NCAA Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects in Sports Committee, NCAA II Administrative Committee and the NCAA Volleyball Rules committee. In 2012, Stevens was awarded the Mike McLaughlin award for “Excellence in Sports,” which was voted on by her fellow WVIAC Athletic Directors. In addition, Bren is an avid scuba diver, voracious reader, pianist and currently resides in Cross Lanes, WV with her partner Tammy Krepshaw.
