The world is a peculiar thing. Despite all of our differences and the borders that separate us, the human spirit always seems to over power. It is bitter sweet to know how the world comes together in a moments notice to lend a helping hand. Sending out fleets of ships, thousands of tons of food and water, and thousands of people to help rebuild, heal and console wherever devastation strikes.

I’m referring to the tragedy in Haiti but also to all events like this one that have happened in the past. I say bitter sweet because it is comforting to see how much love there is out there, that the world stops to help an entire nation in need, but I also wonder why does it take something like this for us to take action? Haiti, long before they suffered this devastation, needed the worlds help. It is one of the poorest nations on our side of the world and there are many countries like this that need our help. I hope that this time around the world stays united and continues these amazing efforts.

This month is all about Unity. We have a very touching story of the Amazing Dr. Watkins and her ground breaking work with disabled children, we also have a very inspiring piece by Azusa Mayor Joe Rocha, outlining the great community we have and their efforts to make it a better place for everyone to live. We hope that you find a little comfort during these times in this issue. God Bless!

El mundo es algo peculiar. A pesar de nuestras diferencias y las fronteras que nos separan, el espíritu humano siempre esta presente. Es un poco agridulce saber como el mundo se une rápidamente para ayudar en lo que puedan. Mandando una flota de barcos, miles de toneladas de comida y agua, y miles de personas para ayudar a reconstruir, curar y consolar donde hay devastación.

Estoy refiriéndome a la tragedia que ocurrió en Haití, pero también a todos los eventos mundiales como este que han pasado. Mencione agridulce porque es bonito ver cuanto amor hay en el mundo, que este mismo se detiene para ayudar una nación en apuros, pero también me pregunto ¿porque es necesario que algo así pase para que tomemos acción? Haití, mucho antes de que sucediera esta tragedia ha necesitado nuestra ayuda. Es una de las naciones mas pobres en esta parte del mundo y hay muchos países en la misma situación que necesitan de nosotros. Espero que esta vez el mundo siga unido y continua la bondad que se ha demostrado.

Este mes hablamos sobre la unidad. Tenemos una muy buena historia de la asombrante Dra. Watkins y su trabajo revolucionario con los niños incapacitados, y un articulo que inspira escrito por el Alcalde Joe Rocha, demostrando la gran comunidad en la que vivimos y los esfuerzos que tomamos para hacer un mejor lugar donde todos podamos vivir. Esperamos que obtenga un poco de consuelo en estos tiempo con esta edición. ¡Dios los bendiga!

A word from the Mayor / Mensaje del alcalde

Unity is described as being whole or undivided. Things such as holding hands or marriage are a good example of unity. It also means oneness, as is the case in Azusa when it comes to accomplishing something, getting things done, celebrating or simply helping others.

Recently three large organizations, AUSD, APU, the City and a group

of volunteers unified to fight obesity in families, especially children, by starting the BE A WALKER-WALK 60 program to encourage children to walk and exercise and eat healthy foods. We meet the second Saturday of every month at different parks. For information on this program you may call (626) 523-2506.

Every year in April Azusans and persons from surrounding communities participate in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in the City of Azusa. The Relay offers everyone an opportunity to participate in raising much-needed funds to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment. Teams of people take turns walking or running around APU’s Cougar track for 24 hours.

Every year in September when new APU students arrive in Azusa, the University, Azusa Ministerial Association, the City and a group of volunteers come together to implement throughout the community the City Links Program. City Links aims to build relationships among those who live, learn, work, and grow up in the city of Azusa. Working with faith communities, schools, parks, and nonprofit organizations, students and community members take action to promote a common care for our neighborhoods. Beautifying Azusa one project at a time. It also aids new students to be introduced to the city of Azusa.

On Thursday December 3, over 300 members of the community gathered to witness Target Stores and the City of Azusa break ground on the site of the new Target development in the city. The project will see the development of a 159,000 square foot Target retail store, including 420 parking spaces. The new building will be located at 809 N. Azusa Avenue, and will reach two stories in height with a smaller portion of the building reaching three stories. It was a day of celebration and of great benefit to Azusa as Target will be a magnet store that will bring other businesses and much needed revenue, shopping and services to the city.

Within the last month the entire community of Azusa has mourned and come together to support the families of two of our youth, Estefanie Padilla and Jessie Valencia, who lost their lives. Sixteen year old Estefanie died on December 30 as a result of the injuries she sustained from being struck by a truck while on her way to school. Six year old Jessie was fatally shot on January 9, as he played with toys in the driveway of his home. They will be remembered and missed by the entire community.

Azusa is a city that is unified through good times and bad times. It is a community with a heart.

La unión se describe como algo completo o indivisible. Cosas como tomarse de las manos o matrimonio son buenos ejemplos de unión. También significa singularidad, como en el caso de Azusa cuando se trata de lograr una meta, completar algo, celebrar o ayudar a la comunidad.

Recientemente tres organizaciones grandes, AUSD, APU, La Ciudad y un grupo de voluntarios se han unificado para luchar contra la obesidad en familias, especialmente los niños, creando el programa SE CAMINADOR-CAMINA 60 para animar a los niños a caminar y hacer ejercicio y a comer comidas saludables. Nos juntamos cada segundo sabado de cada mes en differentes parques. Para informacion sobre este programa puede llamar al (626) 523-2506.

Cada año en Abril los residentes de Azsa y personas de las comunidades que los rodean participan en La Carrera de Revelos para La Sociedad de Cancer Americana en la ciudad de Azusa. La carrera le ofrece a todos la oportunidad de participar en recaudar fondos para la lucha contra el cancer y levantar consciencia de los tratamientos. Equipos de personas toman turnos caminando o corriendo alrededor de la pista “Cougar” de APU por 24 horas.

Cada año en Septiembre cuando los nuevos estudiantes llegan a APU en Azusa, la universidad, La Administracion de Ministerios de Azusa, la Ciudad y un grupo de voluntarios se unen para implementar el programa City Links que crea relaciones entre esos que viven, trabajan, y crecen en la ciudad de Azusa. Trabajando con las comunidades de fe, escuelas, parques, y organizaciones, los estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad toman accion para promover el cuidado de la comunidad. Enbelleciendo Azusa un proyecto a la vez. Tambien ayuda a introducir a los nuevos estudiantes a la ciudad.

EL jueves 3 de diciembre, mas de 300 miembros de la comunidad se juntaron para ser testigos del nuevo sitio de Target dentro de la ciudad. El proyecto construira un edificio de 159,000 pies cuadrados, incluyendo 420 espacios para estacionar. El nuevo edificio estara localizado en 809 N. Azusa Ave., y tendra dos pisos con ciertas partes del edificio con tres pisos. Era un dia de celebracion y mucho beneficio para la ciudad ya que Target atraera a mas negocios a la ciudad y muchos mas servicios al centro e ingresos para Azusa.

En el ultimos mes la comunidad entera ha estado en luto y se unieron para apoyar a las familias de dos jovenes, Estefanie Padilla y Jessie Valencia, que perdieron sus vidas. Estefanie tenia 16 años se murio en 30 de diciembre como resultado de lessiones y heridas que recibio cuando un camion la atropello cuando iba en ruta a la escuela. Jessie, un niño de seis años recibio un balaso mortal el 9 de Enero, mientras el jugaba con sus juguetes en frente de su casa. La comunidad entera los recordara y extrañara. Azusa es una ciudad unificada por buenos tiempos y malos tiempos. Es una comunidad con corazon. B

Alice Watkins is known and respected in Azusa for her work as Dean of the School of Education and Behavioral Studies at Azusa Pacific University from 1995 through 2002. She also has devoted her life to children with special needs. "From day one," Alice says, "I wanted to teach children with educational and physical challenges who often were ignored by public schools. I wanted to help kids who had no voice." For over 50 years, she

has worked diligently to achieve this goal.

Dr. Watkins began teaching special education in 1956 at Robert Peary Junior High School in Los Angeles. "I learned that many of the children who were considered unteachable were actually quite capable and eager to learn," Alice recalls. "I was motivated to find innovative ways to educate them and when I did, these kids learned beautifully." By 1965, she was teaching at Lanterman State Hospital in Pomona. At the time, many children who were considered incorrigible were sent to state hospitals to receive their education. "In fact," Alice remembers, "some hospitals served kids from birth to death. I once had a student whose mother never even took her child home!"

While at Lanterman, Alice established a reputation for her outstanding work in the classroom. "I taught kids who were physically disabled and cognitively challenged. Although institutionalized, I wanted them to have a chance to lead productive lives." She fondly remembers a hydrocephalic child who had been a thalidomide baby and severely deformed from birth. "This child had a true love for life! One day, we went on a field trip to a farm and she drew the most amazing picture of a cow. Her drawing illustrates the rich language she had learned but was not always able to put into words."

Harry Wall, a professor at California State University, Los Angeles, heard about Alice's accomplishments at Lanterman and brought his students to observe her classroom. "Back then," Alice notes, "people visited state hospitals out of curiosity and pity for the disabled children. My class was different. My students were able to read and write and even entertained the college students with songs from Mary Poppins!" She adds that Dr. Wall was so impressed that he recruited her to work at Cal State LA. In 1969, Alice was hired by the university as a professor of Special Education. She continued there until 1995, having served as Associate Dean of the School of Education for the previous nine years.

Looking back on her many accomplishments, Alice notes with pride that her dream never changed. "I always wanted to be an advocate for children," she states, "no matter where I worked. The public schools, state hospitals and universities where I taught were wonderful learning laboratories for me." The same can definitely be said for the hundreds of children, parents and educators who have benefited from the tireless work of Dr. Alice Watkins.

UN DESAFÍO EN HAITÍ

A CHALLENGE IN HAITI

Para todos los que hemos experimentado un terremoto, este servidor ya lleva 4, sabemos qué significa sentirse con terror e impotencia al mismo tiempo ante la fuerza destructiva debajo de nuestros pies. El instinto de supervivencia con que hemos sido dotados, nos impulsa de manera casi eléctrica a ponernos a salvo, es la orden inmediata que el cerebro dirige a todo el cuerpo. Una vez puestos a salvo, lo natural, lo urgente e importante, es saber qué pasó con los seres que amamos, qué suerte corrieron, ¿lo habrán logrado? Por cientos de miles en Haití, no lograron responder a esta pregunta; de hecho, al transcurrir los días y las

semanas, hasta el momento en que el lector se encuentra con este artículo, muchos siguen sin encontrar a sus familiares, y ya a esta altura, pensar lo peor.

Es un desastre de proporciones monstruosas en un país considerado el más pobre del continente americano. Una catástrofe que lo ubica en otra escala de pobreza quizás no conocida hasta ahora. No sólo se habla del impacto en la infraestructura que tomará, según las proyecciones, una década en levantar edificios que se utilizan para toda clase de servicios; pero, además de esto, el impacto en la familia con la pérdida de uno o varios de ellos. Mucha gente, en cuestión de días, quedó deshabilitada por el resto de sus vidas al amputar uno de sus miembros, las fuentes de trabajo inseguras con una economía más difícil. B

For all those of us who have experienced an earthquake, we know what it means to feel the fear and helplessness toward that powerful force under our feet. Our survival instinct that we have been given drives us to protect our selves. It’s the first thought that our mind delivers to our entire body. Once we feel safe, the natural and most urgent thing for us is to know how our loved ones are, what happened to them, and if they made it. Hundreds of thousands in Haiti, were not able to get the answers to those questions. In fact, as the days and weeks passed, there are many who still have not found their family members and now some can’t help but assume the worst.

It is a tragedy of monstrous proportions in a country that is considered a highly poverty ridden nation. A catastrophe exasperated poverty like we’ve never seen before. I’m not only talking about the impact the infrastructure will take to rebuild, according to projections, it will take a decade to construct buildings that will be used for many different purposes, let alone the impact of the families that have lost loved ones. In a matter of days many people became disabled for the rest of their lives, many jobs were lost and the economy is in a difficult situation. I don’t have to continue to describe what we have all seen and heard. I don’t want to be redundant, I would like us to be put in there shoes.

As a child, my siblings, cousins and I would spend many summer days at our grandparents’ home. Some of the best pastimes included climbing the enormous tree in the backyard with some of the neighborhood children or riding in the back of our grandfather’s old pick-up truck. I particularly have vivid memories of my grandfather gathering all his grandchildren and telling us that because we were a family it was very important that we always take care of and protect one another. I can recall that this topic of conversation especially came about when a little boy who lived down the road was abducted in plain daylight while his older brother walked a few feet ahead of him. My grandfather seemed to think that this tragedy would not have happened had the two brothers been walking side by side. I, on the other hand, thought it was unfair to place such harsh blame on the older brother who happened to be a regular playmate of ours. After the incident, the older boy stopped visiting with us. For as long as I can remember, this child’s abduction served as a reminder of the dangers that exist and we took constant heed in my grandfather’s expectation of taking care of and protecting one another when adults couldn’t be present.

Growing up, I often reflected on the incident and thought about how sad and helpless the family must have felt. They moved away and we never knew if the boy had ever been found. Today, as a parent, I often tell my children to take care and protect one another- the same words my grandfather stressed to me as a child. In response they will often give me the roll of the eyes that signifies I am being overprotective or perhaps overreacting. I realize that, like most kids, they believe nothing bad will ever happen to them but I remain persistent. To further ensure their safety and well being, I will not allow them to venture to places that are potentially unsafe even if it upsets them and they slam a bedroom door or give me the silent treatment for the rest of the day. I have often told them, “I would rather see you mad and safe at home than hurt somewhere on the streets!” That statement will usually earn me yet another roll of the eyes. Their disappointment is usually temporary and once its gone they realize and accept that I am only being precautious...

Cuando era niña, mis hermanos, primos y yo pasábamos muchos veranos en la casa de nuestros abuelos. Algunos de los mejores pasatiempos incluían salir al patio a treparnos en el árbol con los otros niños de la vecindad o salir en la camioneta de mi abuelo. Tengo memorias de mi abuelo juntando a todos sus nietos y diciéndonos

que somos un a familia y era muy importante que siempre nos protegiéramos el uno al otro. Recuerdo que este tema surgió cuando un niño que vivía cerca de nosotros fue secuestrado en medio día mientras su hermano caminaba a unos pasos enfrente de el. Mi abuelo pensaba que esta tragedia se pudo evitar si los dos hermanos hubieron caminado juntos. Yo pensé que era injusto culpar al hermano mayor de esto, ya que el jugaba con nosotros regularmente. Después del incidente, el hermano mayor dejo de visitarnos. Desde ese entonces, el secuestro de ese niño sirvió como recuerdo de los peligros que existen y tomábamos en cuenta siempre en las expectaciones de cuidarnos uno al otro cuando no había un adulto presente que mi abuelo siempre nos decía.

Por mucho tiempo reflejaba sobre el incidente y pensaba de la tristeza que la familia debió de sentir. Se mudaron y nunca supimos si encontraron al niño. Hoy como madre, les digo a mis niños que se cuiden y se protejan el uno al otro, las mismas palabras que decía mi abuelo cuando yo era niña. Mis hijos me responden con modales que indican que estoy siendo sobre protectiva y tal vez exagerando. Me doy cuenta que como la mayoría de los niños ellos creen que nada les pasara pero yo soy persistente. Para asegurar su bienestar, no permitiré que vayan a lugares que pueden ser potencialmente peligrosos aunque se enojen y den portazos o me dejen de hablar por el resto del día. Les he dicho que prefiero verlos enojados y salvos en casa que en la calle. Eso a veces hace que se enojen aun más. Pero sus sentimientos son temporales y cuando se les pasa se dan cuenta y aceptan que mis intenciones solo eran de protegerlos... B
