Enhancing interconnectivity of short and long distance transport networks through passenger focused interlinked information-connectivity

Uniqueness of the InfoConnectivity System (ICS)

Current situation
Investment in the InfoConnectivity System (ICS) should pay off in:
• raising flight destination rating• improved rating of transport modes• optimised passenger flow• new revenue possibilities
Due to global competition of flight destinations, new systems to improve passenger focused travel information should be usedto strengthen European airport regions.

Current situation: Shortfalls in travel information provision
• inconsistency of information through incompatible systems • expected but unavailable information
This causes problems for travellers, adding up with the following:
1) Separated management of information by "owners” lead to

• are not perceived or are ignored(not in time or place to foresee or counter a problem, bad
hearing/seeing/mobility, stress and high mental workload)• are not understood
(cognitive ability and language problems)
Current situation: Shortfalls in travel information provision
2) Information that don’t address traveller’s requirements

Stressed travellers can’t take up information, get resistant to information provided via infrastructure, only relying on bystanders or staff.
Shortfalls lead to a heightened stress level, uncertainty and unpredictability.
Stress negatively effects passenger flow
Current situation: Shortfalls in travel information provision

Uncertainty makes travellers see a transport option as being more "straining" than it really is. Through this, e.g. public transport might not be used, or even a flight destination (airport region) avoided.
Uncertainty downgrades transport mode’s and destination’s rating
Shortfalls lead to a heightened stress level, uncertainty and unpredictability.

Established needs of travellers are fulfilled by making situation related information available, considering language, impairments and cognitive ability.
The ICS is a travel companion, pursuing a seamless travel information ecosystem to empower travellers, and make them feel safe, welcome and in control.
The ICS is geared to reduce stress and uncertainty, using information, tailored for and provided in situated context.
Improving the situation
May 2014May 2014 8Uniqueness of the ICSUniqueness of the ICSIIIDIIID
The ICS’s situated (situation related) content provides insight and foresight on events/problems and facilities en-route.
Stress and uncertainty is reduced, contributing to passenger flow, and free time is gained, making travellers to revisit the destination.
The ICS empowers travellers, improves flow and ratings

Being at ease and in control, additional possibilities for revenues are imminent, as free time is gained to be spent for leisure or shopping.
The ICS creates additional revenue

Traveller needs Personas
Specific information suiting traveller needs
Feature: information traveller's actually need, not available with other systems, e.g. apps.
These were established via surveys (4541 persons) in Poland, Russia, Spain. Additional needs found through use of hypothetical travellers (personas).

Complexity of the travelling task and accompanying high mental workload and stress requires that:
Information must relate to the currently experienced situation to make sense and allow for uptake, understanding, decision and action. This way, even sudden problems/needs can be handled by a traveller.
Situation based information provision (1) - Emergency

Complexity of the travelling task and accompanying high mental workload and stress requires that:
The ICS facilitates foresight by giving information on the upcoming situation to prepare to evade problems, carry out mandatory processes quickly & with ease.
Information on situations further ahead can be accessed in (waiting) situations, where mental workload is low.

Information is in a constant state of flux. Therefore, measures have to be taken to:• keep information up to date• assure high quality and relevance• reach consistency in information presentation• adapt to changing traveller groups & traveller needs• adapt to evolving technology• extend/amend the required reach of the ICS
The ICS turns the traveller’s environment in a constantly improving and seamless information ecosystem over time.

The best way to facilitate sustainable information quality improvement would be formation of an ICS Consortium of Stakeholders from the airport region: airlines, airport, public transport, policy makers, tourism, etc.

The ICS is a travel companion, forming a seamless travel information ecosystem to empower travellers, to feel safe, welcome and in control, and gain free time.
The ICS reduces stress and uncertainty of travellers, utilising the potential of information, tailored and provided for situated context.
Implementation of the ICS in the airport region fosters: • a raised rating of the flight destination and transport modes• an optimised passenger flow• additional revenue possibilities
