Through participation in athletic programs, students learn teamwork, sportsmanship, the experience of winning and losing, the rewards of hard work, and self-discipline. Students also build self-confidence and skills to handle competitive situations. These are qualities our community expects schools to develop in students, so they become responsible adults and productive citizens.

College and career readiness begins before elementary school! The Sunnyside district places great importance on helping our diverse students and families achieve success, from the very first time they enter through the doors of our schools. In early learning programs, we work together with parents on helping their children continue to work toward academic, social, emotional and behavioral success.

We are a community of learners.“It is the place where one comes to know what it is to be related. It is the place of sharing life through everyday acts, though song, dance, story, and celebration. It is the place of teaching, learning, making art, and sharing thoughts, feelings, joy, and grief. It is the place for feeling and being connected. The community is the place where each person can, metaphorically speaking, become complete and express the fullness of their life.” Gregory Cajete

Gregory Cajete

We are a kaleidoscope of cultures. The mural at Sunnyside High School located on the East wall of the 600 Building, was started in 1994-95 during turbulent times in our community. The mural project brought rival gang members together for a shared vision. A design was submitted, and with the help of several well-known Tucson muralists, the mural has become an example of unity, representing a place where everyone can come to learn and feel safe.

The performing arts are closely linked to almost everything that we as a community say we want for our children: academic achievement, social and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity. The arts can connect people more deeply to the world and open them to new ways of seeing, creating the foundation to forge social bonds and community cohesion.

Sunnyside schools have prepared generations of graduates for successful lives and careers. Our alumni are the heart of our community. Many of our alumni continue to live and work in our community and in our schools. They are an inspiration to today’s students and a source of pride for the teachers and staff who imparted wisdom and love of learning from kindergarten to graduation.

A rainbow of sound. Sunnyside schools build nurturing and responsive relationships with children and families. During the early childhood years, children learn to interact with one another in ways that are positive and successful. The positive social interaction students enjoy in Elvira’s hand bell choir develops confidence, persistence with challenging tasks, attending and listening to instructions, and effectively communicating emotions. Individual student performers come together and produce a rainbow of sounds.
