JUNE 17TH, 2018 11TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MAY GOD, WHO WONDERFULLY FORMS EACH PERSON IN THE WOMB, PROTECT ALL UNBORN CHILDREN FROM HARM; WE PRAY TO THE LORD:

JUNIO 17, 2018 11O DOMINGO EN TIEMPO ORDINARIO PARA QUE DIOS, QUE MARAVILLOSAMENTE FORMA A CADA PERSONA EN EL VIENTRE MATERNO, PROTEJA DE CUALQUIER DAÑO A TODOS LOS NIÑOS POR NACER; ROGUEMOS AL SEÑOR:

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israel-ites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was some-thing to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contempo-raries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kind-ness, justice, and integrity ? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encour-agement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. By: Anna Carter

Reflexion

Vocation Corner: Father’s Day

Let me begin by saying Happy Father’s Day to all men who have played a role in any way in leading others to live good and up-right lives and especially to those who have led others to know and love God. I say this in a very general way in light of an experi-ence that blew me away less than a month after being ordained a priest. Simply put, someone gave me a Father’s Day card. As I opened it and say that it said “Happy Father’s Day” I was confused for the briefest of moments, because as a celibate priest I of course don’t have any children of my own. However, I quickly realized that I am called “Father” and that I play a role in giving spiritual life and in raising people in the faith. I share this story today because many young men who are discerning priesthood end up saying no to the call simply because they say that they want kids of their own and they want to be fathers. I understand their sentiment completely, because that was me at one point. But over time the Lord helped me to see that I am still a father, and that this isn’t just a nice little idea. At my parish where I am assigned there are over 400 kids in the grade school and those are my kids! I love teaching every single one of them about Christ and helping them grow and learn. So if you feel a call to the priest-hood but struggle to say yes because you want to be a father, know that God has a great way of making it all work out! Happy Fathers Day!

Join us for a family-friendly, 9-mile bike ride along the Illi-nois Prairie Path on Saturday, June 30th. The ride begins at 10 a.m. at Hoffman Park in Glen Ellyn and turns around at Prairie Path Cycles in Winfield. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The bike shop has also offered to do minor repairs and adjustments for participating riders at no charge. T-shirts are available for donations of $25 or more.

All donations support Biking for Babies, a national organiza-tion that partners with local pregnancy centers to raise aware-ness and provide support for their efforts to help pregnant women and their families. Our local center is Waterleaf, a pregnancy medical clinic and education and resource center with locations in Aurora and Bolingbrook.
