Measuring Professional Development Learning

• Thinking about your past professional development learning experiences, how did you know whether or not you learned a new skill of concept that can be applied to the classroom?

• Consider the following:o Application through assessments and/or artifacts – tests/quizzes,

lesson plans, student activities, implementation of lessons o Analysis of student achievement and/or perspectives- standardized

tests, benchmarks, in-class assessments, performance-based classwork, student survey responses

o Evaluation/Reflection on artifacts and student achievement – journals, reflection documents

o Transference of Knowledge – sharing with colleagues in PLCs, presentations at staff meetings, etc.

Erin’s Learning Plan

• Erin has two goals on her Learning Plan:o Professional Learning Community Goal - During the first Quarter, the

Fifth Grade Mathematics Professional Learning Community will have 80% of their students master the fifth grade state standards associated with Statistics and Probability as demonstrated through common assessments.

o Individual Growth Goal - During the course of the year, I will increase my performance level to a Level 3 or above in the following areas: 1a, 1c, 3a and 4a.

• Aligned with each goal are courses and tasks that will assist in her journey toward meeting these goals.

• How are Erin’s goals similar to what your teachers are expected to do?

Courses and ResourcesCourses and Resources::• Design –

o “case study” method – collaboration with partners to identify teachers that are implementing research-informed instructional strategies that work

o created to a provide a “virtual classroom” for teachers to learn and grow

• Features – o Thematic Chapters – define learning

goalso Highlights – helps to focus the

participant as to what is importanto Embedded Assessments – activities to

bridge the connection between learning and the classroom

o Artifacts – teacher’s approach to implementation, lesson plans, student work

Courses and Resources – Scavenger Hunt

o In the Common Core Series Module: Standard for Mathematical Practice 2 – Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively, what are the three subheadings on the left sidebar?

o In the Competency-Based Series: Considering Technology Tools for the Classroom, how many questions are in the Reviewing Technology in Action Quiz?

o In the Effective Instructional Series: Data-Focused Instructional Decision Making Course, what are the categories of the Professional Development Goals

o Looking at the Framework Component Series: 3c Engaging Students in Learning, why would this be useful for teachers who are using the Danielson Framework for Observations?
