Undergraduate Wins National Academic Award

The Lambda Upsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Theta So-rority, Inc. member Amanda Smallwood received the Dr. June Brewer Scholar award at the 43nd Southwest Regional Confer-ence held this summer in Austin, TX. The Lambda Upsilon chapter was recognized for Smallwood having a 4.0 GPA throughout the entire sorority year. Smallwood is a recent graduate with a Bach-elor of Arts in Print Journalism. She became an active member of the Lambda Upsilon chapter in Spring 2010. Smallwood said she was proud to represent not only her chapter but also the Universi-ty of Central Arkansas and the UCA Greek Life. The Off ice of Student Life staff is very proud of Amanda and the ladies of Del-ta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Academic Year!

August is over, school is in session, the weather is still hot, and UCA Greeks are already very active around campus. The semester is only a week old and there has been activity all over campus. Retreats, Welcome Week, Move In, Conway Daze, SOS, meetings, and classwork have consumed the lives of many Greek students. Even though things are busy, students are excited to be back on campus (some are too “cool” to admit this), see each oth-er, and put their energy to good use. The calendar is packed with plenty of fun social, leadership, academic, and athletic events for the year. With so much going on, make sure that all of your chapter members get involved and make a difference around campus and in the surrounding community. Do not wait! Get started today and show the campus and Conway communities how amazing and active UCA Greek Life is at UCA.

Progress on the UCA Greek Village project is being made each

day. At the 2011 Greek Summit, Dr. Gary Roberts, Dean of Stu-dents; Ronnie Williams, VP for Student Services; and Shelly Mehl, VP of Institutional Advancement; presented to active Greek stu-dents about the project. During this presentation, students learned the most recent news about the project and asked plenty of questions. By the end of the meeting, students and ad-ministrators both had a better under-standing of the needs of each other regarding this project.

On Monday, August 22, 2011, Office of Student Life staff members hosted an alumni/advisor dinner for all UCA Greek organizations. During this meeting, Wendy Holbrook, Associate Dean of Student Life, presented to all advisors about the future of this project and the need for their input. The project is now in the

stages that we need organizations to elect at least one individual that will be a primary decision maker for this project. This individual will be re-sponsible for making key decisions about the project on behalf of the group and attend future meetings regarding financing, construction,

and housing policies. The Dean of Students Office will host a dinner in late September and/or early October for these individu-als. Please look for more information on this meeting in the near future.

Most visibly, a sign signifying the future home of the pro-ject has been place on the corner of Farris and Dave Ward. Many people have noticed the sign and are more excited than ever be-fore about the project. Please make it a point to drive by the sign and see where Greek Village will hopefully be placed in the next few years. It is time for alumni to start communicating with each other and making decisions about future housing options. If Na-tional representatives are needed for this process, then please in-clude them. This is community pro-ject, so please let your opinion be heard!

Informal fall recruitment will begin as soon as school starts. During this peri-od, groups are encouraged to meet potential new members that meet the minimum UCA requirements. Here are important fall recruitment dates:

Phired Up productions will be visiting campus on Septem-ber 11, 2011 to offer workshops on recruitment and social excel-lence. Please make sure that your recruitment director, new mem-ber educator, and five younger, active members are able to attend the recruitment workshop (eight (8) members total). These mem-bers will learn the steps to proper Dynamic Recruitment and then be expected to teach their organizations these steps for future re-cruitment efforts. The social excellence workshop will take the place of the traditional Greek Convocation and requires a mini-mum of 80 percent of active membership attendance. If organiza-tions do not send the required amount of people and/or individu-als do not attend, then either and/or both will be charged for the absence. Here is the schedule of events for the day:

4:00-5:15 – NPHC Workshop – NPHC groups

The Student Activities and Housing and Residence Life Offices hosted another successful Move In Day on August 21, 2011. Many groups and organizations, including nearly all Greek chapters, helped first year students and families move into their residence halls. IFC, Panhel-lenic, and NPHC councils set up “hydration stations” outside of the Christian Cafeteria to provide cool drinks to hundreds of

sweaty individuals. Greeks who were spotted helping out received free gifts, including “Go Greek! Go Bears!” sunglasses. Thank you to all of the Greek students that helped with Move In and truly welcomed first year students to UCA in style.

First Council Meeting

Members of IGC met at Greek Summit to help plot the future course of their council. Office of Student Life Gradu-ate Assistant, Maggie Glover, facilitat-ed a meeting between IGC members at Summit to help the formulate ideas and a plan of action. IGC members will now work together to form a func-tioning constitution/bylaws, create and implement policies, and complete the necessary steps to register IGC as a Recognized Student Organization (RSO). If you have any questions about this process, then feel free to contact Maggie Glover (mglover3@uca.edu), Scott Isenga (sisenga@uca.edu), or Lindsey Os-borne (losborne@uca.edu). This is an exciting step towards helping IGC growth as a council on UCA’s campus.

Greek Summit 2011

Greek Summit took place from August 15-16, 2011 at Fern-cliff Camp in Little Rock. Representatives from IFC, IGC, Panhel-lenic, and NPHC attended this two day retreat in order to learn more about University policies regarding Greek life, student or-ganizations, social/risk management, and registering social events. In addition, every attendee sat in on presentations from President Meadors, Student Services Senior Staff, UCA Athletics, and UCA Police. Most importantly, Greek leaders had plenty of time to interact with each other socially and build new bonds. Whether they worked together to complete a team building activity, ate a meal by the lake with a new group of people, or took a trip in the paddle boats; Greek leaders creat-ed shared memories that will last a lifetime. By the end of the retreat, all fraternity and sorority members had a better understanding of one anoth-er and a shared set of fun and infor-mational experiences. The Office of Student Life staff was very impressed with the hard work put forth by all the students at Summit. The staff would also like to thank all of our special guest presenters that made Summit extra special.

Sigma Kappa Wins National Award

The Delta Tau Chapter of Sigma Kappa recrently received the Edna Brown Dreyfus Award from their National Headquar-ters. The ladies of Delta Tau received this award because they contributed the most money per member/new member to Sigma Kappa Foundation's national philanthropy projects. These na-tional projects include Alzheimer's disease research, gerontology studies, and the Maine Sea Coast Mission. In addition to the award plaque, the Chapter also received a commemorative traveling silver punch bowl and tray. Congratula-tions to the ladies of Delta Tau on this great accomplishment!

Kappa Sigma Wins National Award

The Nu-Kappa Chapter of Kappa Sig-ma won the Academic Excellence Award at their Grand Conclave in Las Vegas on July 30. Kappa Sigma currently ranks second amongst the IFC fraternities in grades. In the spring 2011 semester they achieved at 2.779 GPA and overall they maintain a 2.930 cumulative GPA. Congratulations to the men of Nu-Kappa for your hard work both in and out of the classroom!

Greek Council Retreats

August has been full of re-treats! IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC have all had retreats over the past month. During each of these retreats Executive Board members and Chap-ter Delegates met to discuss upcom-ing plans for their councils. In addi-tion, each council conducted a varie-ty of team building activities to facilitate bonding and cooperation between members. In addition to these councils, members of IGC met at Greek Summit to discuss the future formation of their council. With all of this hard work, it looks as though the coming year will be very exciting and very busy. Best of luck to every council during the 2011-2012 academic year!

The Theta Mu chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. won the "Break Out " Chapter Award in August. This award recognizes Theta Mu as the most outstanding chapter in the re-gion. In addition, the ladies of Theta Mu won second place in the AKA Regional Talent Show. Congratula-tions to the ladies of Theta Mu on these fantastic accomplishments!

IFC Recruitment Info Session

Transitions NPHC Step Show

Each school year, Minority Mentorship sponsors Transitions, which is a series of activities which focuses on getting freshmen students acquainted with campus life and meeting new people of color. During Transitions, freshmen are paired with an upper-class student who has gone through training to help them navi-gate the transition from high school to college. Part of this program in-cludes an NPHC Step Show in Ida Waldran. On August 31, all seven (7) UCA NPHC organizations put on an amazing show for new students. Every organization pulled out the stops and performed like they were in a competition. All performances were amazing and the Office of Stu-dent Life would like to thank all NPHC organizations for participating in this essential UCA program.

To facilitate increased interests in IFC Chapters amongst non-Greek students, IFC sponsored an informational session at Bear’s Den Pizza. At this session, interested men had the chance to meet representatives from every IFC Chapters and enjoy free pizza. In addition, Recruitment Directors and/or Presidents from every fraternity gave short speeches about the unique as-pects of their organizations. Overall, the event was a success and many interested individuals were able to meet and interact with members from every IFC fraternity.
