Conducted by TODD KEllyDr. Todd Kelly is Associate Professor of Trumpet and Director of Jazz Ensembles at Bradley University in Peoria, Il-linois. Dr. Kelly teaches trumpet, directs the Bradley Jazz Ensembles and Jazz Combos, teaches Jazz Improvisation, and serves as the advisor for the Music Business program. The jazz program at Bradley includes two big bands, one combo, and a year - long Jazz Improvisation sequence.

Dr. Kelly holds the Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet performance from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He received a Bachelor of Music Education degree with high honors from the University of Montana, and a Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Northern Colorado.

Dr. Kelly maintains a busy performing schedule in the Central Illinois area with the Todd Kelly Jazz Quintet, the Central Illinois Jazz Orchestra, Four Other Brothers, JC and the Redemption, and as a freelance jazz and classical musician. He has toured throughout the United States with Indian tabla artist Sandip Burman. He has also performed with Wayne Newton, Jerry Lewis, Charo, the Fifth Dimension, Lesley Gore, Steve Lippia, Mannheim Steamroller, and the national touring companies of Hairspray, Wicked, Mary Poppins, The Rat Pack is Back, Billy Elliot, and Chicago. Dr. Kelly has been published in Band World, Downbeat, JAZZed, and The Instrumentalist. His book, “Chet Baker: 21 Selected Solos” is available through Jamey Aebersold Jazz and ejazzlines.com, and he is a contributing author to The Jazz Director’s Cookbook, published by Meredith Music. In the spring of 2013, Dr. Kelly received the Slane College of Fine Arts Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Todd Kelly is an artist/clinician for Conn/Selmer in Elkhart, Indiana. He and his wife Kirsten are the proud parents of Connor and Maren.

Conducted by TOM WAlShTom Walsh is Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies Department Chair at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. An active performer of jazz and classical music, he has presented concerts and workshops in China, Brazil, Japan, Germany, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, and across the United States. Premiere performances include Scott Jones’s concert band arrangement of Russell Peck’s The Upward Stream (2013), Chris Rutkowski’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble (2008) and David Baker’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra (2004). Most recently he is featured on Mike Hackett’s CD New Point of View (Summit Records, 2013) and on two CDs released on the IUMusic label: Holiday Celebra-tion (2011) and Sylvia McNair Romance (2012). His latest solo CD release is Intersections (Arizona University Recordings, 2010) featuring Luke Gillespie on piano. Earlier solo CDs include New Life (2002) and Shaking the Pumpkin (1998). Other CD releases include the David Baker Concerto with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra (Paul Freeman Introduces David Baker, Volume XII-- Albany Recordings), Basically Baker with the Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra (GM Recordings), and Sky Scrapings: Saxophone Music of Don Freund (AUR Recordings). Walsh has performed and presented at conferences of the International Association for Jazz Education, the Jazz Education Network, the North American Saxophone Alliance, and the World Saxophone Congress. At the January 2014 Jazz Education Network Conference in Dallas he will present “Steps to Better Ballad Playing” and perform with the Mike Hackett Quintet. A Yamaha Performing Artist and Vandoren Artist, he also teaches at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. Dr. Walsh holds degrees in Saxophone Performance and Jazz Studies from Indiana University, where his principal teachers were distinguished classical saxophonist Eugene Rousseau and renowned jazz educator David Baker.

Conducted by KEVIN SEdAtolEKevin Sedatole serves as director of bands, professor of music, and chair of the conducting area at the Michi-gan State University College of Music. Prior to joining MSU, he was director of bands and associate professor of conducting at Baylor University. Previous to his appointment at Baylor he served as associate director of bands at the University of Texas and director of the Longhorn Band, and as associate director of bands at the University of Michigan and Stephen F. Austin State University.

Sedatole holds both the doctor of musical arts degree and master of music degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his bachelor of music degree from Baylor University. His publications include: One Hundred

Years of the Michigan Marching Band, published by the University of Michigan Press; “Michael Daugherty’s Niagara Falls: A Conductor’s Analysis” and “Gordon Jacob’s Music for a Festival: A Conductor’s Analysis,” both of which appeared in Teaching Music Through Performance in Band; and “Expressive Conducting: What We Should All Know to Be Musical Conductors,” which appeared in the Texas Music Educators Association publication, Southwestern Musician.

Sedatole has conducted performances for the College Band Directors National Association, American Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, and the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, as well as performances in Carnegie Hall. He is a member of the College Band Directors National As-sociation, for which he serves as Southwestern Division vice president, the American Bandmasters Association, the Big 12 Band Directors’ Association, the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association. He holds honorary memberships in the Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Band Fraterni-ties, as well as the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Musicians Fraternity.

Jan Morris was born and raised in Anderson, Indiana. She graduated from Anderson High School where she was active in band and choir. Husband, Bob, also graduated from Anderson High School. They are the parents of Marni Morris and Jason Morris. Jason is married to Emily North Morris, a former student teacher of Jan’s. Jason and Emily are the parents of Samantha Rose, 7, and Jocelyn Ruby 3, who bring their “Mamaw” and “Papaw”, great joy.

Jan attended Ball State University and graduated with a degree in Music Education in 1972 and a Master’s of Art in Music Education in 1977. Jan attended many workshops and classes during her forty-one year career and

presented at many workshops.

Jan began her teaching career in Vevay, Indiana at Switzerland County School Corporation, teaching 1st grade through 12th grade general and vocal music for four years. The past thirty-seven years have been at Royerton Elementary.

Jan is a Past President of Indiana Music Educators Association. She served as the Society for General Music Chair and Circle the State with Song Chair for IMEA. She received the Ball State University Outstanding Music Alumni Award, the IMEA Outstand-ing Elementary Music Educator Award, and Teacher of the Year Award from Royerton. Jan was awarded an Eli Lilly Creativity Grant, Bell Grants, and Economic Grants to allow development of creative teaching in music education.

Jan teaches Music Appreciation at Ivy Tech and spends as much time with her grandchildren as she can.

Joshua N. Pedde, assistant artistic director for the Indianapolis Children’s Choir (ICC), has been with the organiza-tion for thirteen years. He is the principal director of Bel Canto and assistant director of Cantantes Angeli; two of the ICC’s most advanced treble choirs. Mr. Pedde has been instrumental in growing the ICC’s Innovations program which provides free music education workshops to public and private schools throughout central Indiana.

Nationally, he has conducted on the stages of Kennedy Center, Wang Theater, and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Internationally, he has conducted at Canterbury and Westminster Cathedrals in England; the Vatican, San Marco, and the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Italy; San Francisco el Grande Basilica,

Madrid, La Segura Familia, Inglesia Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles, and Santa Maria Del Pi, Barcelona, Spain. In 2003 he premiered the work “The Wraggle Taggle Gypsies” by Irish composer Mary McAuliffe at the National Concert Hall in Dublin.

Mr. Pedde serves as Director of Parish Music at Divine Savior Lutheran Church, Fishers, where he is organist and head of the music department. At Carmel Lutheran Church, he serves as Assistant Choral Director and organist. He is a member of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, and the American Guild of Organists. He is a Level 3 certified Orff-Schulwerk Instruc-tor and is currently working towards his Kodály certification. Mr. Pedde spent five years as an elementary music teacher in the Zionsville Public School system. From 2001-2005 Mr. Pedde founded and served as the Artistic Director of the Kokomo Youth Chorale, a non-profit musical organization for singers with changed voices from grades 6-12.

Mr. Pedde earned his bachelor of music degree in vocal music education and a master’s degree in choral conducting from Butler University, where he was recognized for his outstanding work in elementary music.

Jeffrey Scott Doebler serves as director of music education and bands at Valparaiso University, where he also conducted the Handbell Choir from 1992-2000. His previous experience includes public school teaching in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Shakopee, Minnesota, as well as graduate teaching assistantships at Valparaiso University and the University of Minnesota. He is equally effective when working with younger students, older students, and professional musicians. Dr. Doebler holds music education degrees from Luther College (B.A.), Valparaiso University (M.M.), and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.). He is a native of Palatine, Illinois.

Professor Doebler’s career of more than 30 years in music education has achieved a unique balance of conducting, teacher preparation, leadership in the profession, and working with musicians from the beginning through professional levels, but all aspects of his vocation have had an ultimate focus on teaching. He has been recognized for excellence in teaching by peers, colleagues and students. Dr. Doebler was the recipient of the 2008 Carlo A. Sperati Award from Luther College, for outstanding achievement in the field of music. In 2006, Dr. Doebler was named Outstanding University Music Educator of the Year by the Indiana Music Educators Association, and also received the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award from Quinlan & Fabish Music. Professor Doebler is the 2005 recipient of the Valparaiso University Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award.He has served as a community music conductor, church music director, and also as director of Royal Brass Ensembles for the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. As a high school teacher, Dr. Doebler earned a reputation for leading the transformation of struggling bands into model programs. He was also active in site-based management and district-wide strategic planning. At the university level, his interpretations, repertoire selection, conducting, and leadership have been highly praised.

Premiere UndergraduateTouring Chamber Ensembles

DePauw University School of Music announces the founding of the Asbury String Quartet, the Belle Mans�eld Brass Quintet and the James Hamilton Howe Woodwind Quintet, the premier undergraduate chamber ensembles at DePauw. Applications from young musicians of exceptional quality are now being accepted. The members of each ensemble will study with outstanding professors committed soley to training undergraduate musicians. In addition to touring nationally and internationally, these ensembles will have the opportunity to perform side-by-side with faculty and guest artists of world renown and become a part of a School of Music dedicated to creating the 21st-Century Musician. All members of the Asbury String Quartet, Mans�eld Brass Quintet and Howe Woodwind Quintet receive full scholarships and touring expenses.

Conducted by ALFRED WAtKinSMr. Alfred Watkins has been the Director of Bands at Lassiter since 1982. He has established a fine reputation as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor throughout the United States. Under his leadership, the Lassiter Band has grown from its original 78 members to its present size of 350 music students. The program now includes five symphonic bands, two separate marching bands, a jazz band and numerous performing chamber ensembles.

Mr. Watkins, a native of Jackson, Georgia, received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Florida A&M University, with honors in 1976 where he was a conducting student of Dr. William P. Foster and Dr. Julian E. White. Prior to his arrival at Lassiter, he served for six years as Director of Bands at Murphy High School in the Atlanta Public School System. While

at Murphy, his symphonic bands earned consistent superior ratings in Grade VI. As much a teacher as he is a musician, Mr. Watkins was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1978 and Star Teacher in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1994 and l997.

Conducted by ROBERT gillESpiEBob Gillespie, Professor of Music, is responsible for string teacher training at The Ohio State University, which has one of the largest and most extensive string pedagogy degree programs in the nation. Degree programs in string teaching at OSU include undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. programs. Currently 30 students are enrolled, one of the largest classes in the country. His graduating students teach in school systems and universities throughout the country.

Dr. Gillespie is a past national President of the American String Teachers Association. He is a frequent guest conductor of all-state, regional, and festival orchestras throughout the country and Europe, and he has presented string teacher sessions, workshops, and conducted concerts at national and state music educator conferences in forty-six states and Canada. His string education articles appear frequently in all the major music journals. He is co-author of the Hal Leonard string method book series, Essential Elements for Strings, Essential Elements 2000 for Strings, which has sold over seven million copies to date, and Getting Started: Strolling Strings for MENC. He is also co-author of the Oxford University Press book: Strategies for Teaching Strings: Building A Successful School Orchestra Program. He is co-author of the String Clinics to Go DVD series and the Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra texts for GIA publications. He received the Distinguished Scholar award given by his faculty colleagues in 2002-2003 in the School of Music at Ohio State University, and he is a member of the editorial committee of the Journal of Research in Music Education. Dr. Gillespie is an active researcher. His studies center on string pedagogy and the national status of school string programs in America.

In summers, Dr. Gillespie directs the OSU String Teacher Workshop and the OSU State String Teacher Workshop, the largest string/orchestra teacher training workshops in the country. Dr. Gillespie is a string education teaching artist and clinician for the Conn-Selmer Corporation. He is past president of the Ohio String Teachers Association. In Columbus, he conducts the Columbus Symphony Chamber Strings, and is a performing violinist in the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra.

During the 2013-2014 academic year Dr. Gillespie will give string pedagogy, research presentations, and/or conduct concerts in Pennsylvania, Washington, New Mexico, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, and Texas.

Conducted by DR. PEARL ShAngKuAnA sought after conductor and clinician across the United States and in Asia, Dr. Pearl Shangkuan is a professor of music at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she directs choirs and teaches choral conducting and choral literature. She is also the chorusmaster (Covenant Chair) of the Grand Rapids Symphony and has her own signature choral series with earthsongs. She also serves as the music editor of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship choral series, published by GIA. Prior to her appointment at Calvin College, she taught at Rutgers University and at the Westminster Choir College of Rider University in New Jersey. Her choirs have performed at national, regional and state conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and for other professional

music organizations. A student of preeminent American choral conductor and New York Philharmonic chorusmaster Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, she received a bachelor of music in church music summa cum laude and master of music in choral conducting with distinction from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. She received a doctor of musical arts in choral conducting from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.received a Bachelor of Music in Church Music summa cum laude and Master of Music in Choral Conducting with distinction from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, and a DMA in Choral Conducting from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey
