Dear Students and Parents,

This is an exciting time at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business. To prepare future global leaders, we have created new majors in International Political Economy and Business; Managerial Computing; and Management, Leadership, and Innovation. And, in addition to offering an opportunity to study abroad at nearly 70 institutions worldwide, we have developed three summer programs specifically aimed at business in the global arena: Global Entrepreneurship in Barcelona, International Finance in Oxford, and Intercultural Communications in Shanghai.

As a business school within the Georgetown University academic community, we build upon the Jesuit heritage and mission of Georgetown by developing lifelong learners who are intelligent, ethical, and socially responsible civic leaders.

Our faculty and the Undergraduate Program staff develop transformational experiences that foster academic excellence, create community among students, and encourage students to view an undergraduate business education as broad-based academic preparation for a future as a leader in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

I had my heart set on majoring in finance and finance only. After my first class in marketing, all that changed. I loved it. I considered switching tracks completely and only majoring in marketing, before realizing that there was no reason I couldn’t combine the two. Find your interests and pursue them, no matter how disparate they may seem.

During the first and second years, the primary academic emphasis is on the liberal arts core. Students complete courses in subjects such as English, philosophy, theology, his-tory, and economics, while beginning the Georgetown McDonough busi-ness coursework by taking classes in accounting, business statistics, finance, marketing, management, and busi-ness law. In their junior and senior years, students follow a business core in operations and information management and in strategy, before completing coursework in their major. The McDonough School of Business strongly supports students who choose a minor in one of the nearly 50 liberal arts disciplines. This path allows students to explore and merge diverse interests into their educational pursuits. Approximately 25 percent of Georgetown McDonough students minor in a liberal arts subject.

First year Seminar (FyS) The First Year Seminar entitled International Business, Public Policy, and Society is an exciting way for first-year business students to explore the nature of scholarship, think about important ideas in business, and foster intel-lectual and personal growth while adapting to the rigor of college-level courses. With an emphasis on global perspectives, these seminars establish mentoring relationships with faculty, strengthen critical academic reading and writing skills necessary for success

in college, and introduce students to the importance of giving back to the community. The program culminates in a case competition in which stu-dents develop a strategic solution that addresses current business challenges facing a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.

entrepreneurship Fellows program (eFp) Through a blend of coursework and co-curricular activities, the Entrepreneurship Fellows Program helps students understand their personal entrepreneurial aptitude, learn from entrepreneurial mentors and faculty, bond with their peers and experienced mentors, and prepare them to pursue an entrepreneurial career in new or existing organiza-tions. Many students are unaware of how to go about pursuing an entre-preneurial career; EFP gives them the knowledge and the tools to do so. Students apply to the program in their sophomore year.

In addition, the Undergraduate Program Office teams up with Hilltop Consultants, a student-run nonprofit consulting group, for an annual non-profit case competition at Georgetown University. The case competition, called the Business Strategy Competition at Georgetown University, garners par-ticipation from students at the nation’s top undergraduate business schools. Associate Professor Jeffrey Macher teaches

a course on strategic management.

alumni Mentor program (aMp)The McDonough School of Business Alumni Mentor Program links cur-rent undergraduates with the best and brightest Georgetown alumni in both the Washington, D.C., and New York City metropolitan areas. Participants engage in group events as well as casual individual meetings with their mentors. This program helps students network with recent graduates from a vast array of companies and industries. Students also have the opportunity to seek advice about job searching, interview skills, career choices, academics, and extracurricular activities to make their college career a satisfying one.

case competitionsStudents who take part in case com-petitions develop their teamwork, problem-solving, and presentation skills. The McDonough School of Business sponsors teams of students at numerous case competitions and leadership conferences both nationally and internationally. The competitions present challenging cases that require students to apply knowledge from all areas of busi-ness to reach innovative solutions. In March 2012, a team of McDonough students finished first in the presti-gious Copenhagen Business School Case Competition.

Undergraduate Summer research Fellowship programThe McDonough Summer Research Fellowship is an extraordinary oppor-tunity for undergraduates wishing to conduct independent summer research under the mentorship of a Georgetown McDonough faculty member. Undergraduate research experience is invaluable—from

creating the project to drafting the timeline, sustaining independent work, writing up the research, and eventually presenting the findings. The skills gained through securing and completing a summer research grant are immeasurably helpful for a strong undergraduate record, future graduate school admissions and study, and post-graduate fellowships.

“ Participating in the Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Program is a unique way for students to do research on a topic of interest to them. By working one-on-one with a faculty adviser, students learn how to use the research process to inform a real problem that is of interest to them. In its inaugural year, students worked on topics as varied and complex as deter-mining what influences one’s career choice to understanding why people fail to appropriately change their behavior after nearly catastrophic non-events. I could not find a program like this at any other school I explored. I learned about my favorite subjects in an amazing foreign city while getting a completely different perspective in the classroom. What could be better? And I got to brush up on my Spanish!

Undergraduate study abroad with the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business

encompasses partnerships with more than 70 foreign universities and colleges in 39

countries. As a result, approximately 60 percent of McDonough undergraduates study abroad.

Studying abroad allows students to grow and develop, think critically, expand their views and

understanding of global issues, gain perspective on the United States and its policies, and

enrich their undergraduate experience. The Undergraduate Program Office has worked with

the faculty to develop three unique Georgetown McDonough summer programs in Barcelona,

Spain; Oxford, England; and Shanghai, China.

Global Programs

eSaDe Summer programThe Georgetown – Escuela Superior de Administración y Dirección de Empresas (ESADE) Summer Program offers Georgetown business students the rare opportunity to study entrepreneurship and international marketing at one of the world’s most prestigious business schools. This five-week program combines intensive classroom instruction with cul-tural activities and visits to key centers of economic activity, with particular emphasis on the many small local businesses that play a vital role in Barcelona’s economy and exemplify the city’s entrepreneurial environment.

oxford Summer programGeorgetown University’s Summer Program in Comparative Strategic Management at Oxford University is a six-week session for advancing students’ knowledge of management and international finance. Students attend lectures and traditional Oxford tutorials at Trinity College, and they visit such preeminent businesses as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Goldman Sachs, and the Bank of England to gain insights into commerce from a non-American perspective.

Shanghai Summer programGeorgetown University, jointly with the Fudan University in Shanghai, conducts a five-week summer program on intercultural communication and comparative business with a special focus on the Asia-Pacific market. This program provides students with a basic understanding of strategic business management and intercultural communication in the Pacific context.

Viviana JaramilloHometown: Revere, MAmajor: Accountingname a transformative educational exPerience:My Alternative Spring Break experience revolved around working with migrant farm workers and their families in Immokalee, Fla. To this day, it has been both the most transformative and educational moment. I realized that even though I was interested in business it didn’t mean that I only had to do business. My passion for education does not mean I have to be a teacher, but that I can use my business education to contribute to education reform and Latino movements.

Student Life

Student organizationsNumerous professional organizations within the McDonough School of Business offer students the chance to network with peers and faculty, take on leadership roles, add depth to their studies, and prepare for careers in business. Students can develop leadership skills through student government by participating in the McDonough School of Business Academic Council. Made up of 12 stu-dent representatives, three from each class, the council acts as a liaison among students, faculty, and staff to enhance the business school experience.

Other popular organizations include Hilltop Consultants, Georgetown University Student Investment Fund, Financial Management Association, Georgetown Accounting Society, Undergraduate Marketing Association, OPIM Majors Group, Georgetown Aspiring Minority Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs (GAMBLE), Net Impact, McDonough Retail and Luxury Association, and McDonough Global Student Association.

community ServiceIn the Jesuit tradition of educating the whole person, the McDonough School of Business recognizes the impact that serving the community can have on a student’s development. The McDonough School of Business strongly encourages students to participate in community service activities either on their own or through opportunities created by the busi-ness school.

other campus organizations and activitiesStudents at Georgetown share a passionate interest in the world around them and the energy to take action. The university is home to both the largest student-owned corporation in the nation, The Corp, and the largest student-run credit union. Students are also involved in arts organizations, sport clubs, the cable TV station, a range of publications, and political and social activism. And, in the spirit of cura personalis, or development of the whole person, students have the opportunity to participate in campus ministry programs. internship and Job placementThe Georgetown McDonough Undergraduate Program Office works to enhance classroom learning with co-curricular and extracurricular career development activities to help students compete in a variety of industries. The Professional Development Series offers students a variety of opportunities to interact with industry leaders and alumni who come to campus to participate in panels and workshops created specifically for Georgetown McDonough students.

In addition, all students who attend Georgetown University have access to the university’s Cawley Career Education Center. The Cawley Career Education Center engages Georgetown students at the crossroads of academic learning and professional life. The professional staff is committed to helping students identify meaningful ways to apply the talents they have honed through study and service while at Georgetown to the world of work. Students learn about themselves and future careers as they work with career counselors, attend career development events, perform mock interviews, participate in employer-sponsored information events, and interview with employers for internships and full-time employment on campus.
