History•cleft palate was discovered by the Oregon scientists.•there was evidence of the deformity as far back as 500AD , and recordings of possible attempts of crude repair in the 1500's.•But not until the late 1700's was any successful repair documented.

What is cleft palate?•Cleft palate is a birth defect that happens while the baby is in the mothers womb.•during the 6th to 10th week of pregnancy the bones and tissues of the babys upper jaw, nose, and mouth normally come together to form the roof of the mouth and upper lip.•if the tissue in the developing mouth or palate do not fuse together, a baby will be born with whats called cleft palate.

is it contagious? or inherited?

•cleft palate cannot be contagious, therefor it can be inherited.•If the mother and father have a dominant allelefor cleft palate than the baby can have it too.

what does it look like?•Cleft palate is a hole leading from the upper roof of the mouth to the upper lip and the nostril.•it can cause the baby to not eat properly , and can cause food or some drinks to get caught in the hole•if not cleaned properly it can cause it to possibly bleed.

Is there a cure?•Cleft palate cant be cured with medicine like some diseases can.•instead it can be treated with surgery.•when the baby is 3 to 6 months old it can get surgery to close the gap, though it will cause a scar after surgery.

•Social concerns, becuase people think that the babies are going to die from this deformanity.•People also consider the babies different and handicaped.
