A Welcoming Community of Faith. Come Experience Christ With Us. November 5, 2017

Welcome to Eastern Standard Time, in case you forgot to turn your clocks back one hour before you went to bed last night. We begin this month remembering our deceased loved ones. The Book of the Dead that is placed near the Baptism Font reminds us of those from our parish who died last year. But each of us have parents, siblings, friends and neighbors who have died, whether recently or not so recently. One way we keep them alive is to tell the stories about them that help us through life. We laugh and cry over them but they are important to tell because these are the people who formed us in the faith, gave us the values by which we live and showed us how to love and respect ourselves and one another. In today's Gospel, Jesus once again takes the scribes and Pharisees to task because they were more concerned about outward appearance rather than their internal dispositions. For Jesus, internal dispositions and attitudes were important because they became expressed in words and actions. His internal disposition and attitude came from his relationship with the Father, which he tried to impress upon the apostles. If they wanted to be faithful to him, then they would have to reflect the same in their dealings with others. For us it means that the focus of our lives is that intimate relationship with the Father that is expressed in Jesus. Since this is primary in our lives, then who we are as a people and what we say and do must reflect that relationship in our dealings with others. This is how the Gospel is proclaimed and the kingdom of God is built. We become evangelizers of the Gospel as we are sent to help others discover and experience the wonder that Jesus is for all of us. Most of us live this every day without giving a thought that we might be bringing the Good News of Jesus to oth-ers. All we have to do is take a look at the way we care for others, help others and how we relate to one another in the supermarket, at the mall or wherever we encounter one another. Did you ever think of yourself as one sent to evangelize? You just might be the reason someone returns to the life of the church! Reminder: Tuesday is Election Day. Please remember to vote. We are electing a governor, state, county and town officials. Make your voice heard. HAPPY NOVEMBER!!!

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal

8TH GRADE SAINT JAMES STUDENTS NEWS!

St. James the Apostle School is very proud of our 8th

Graders, who continue to embody the values of our

school as they represent us in the community and

within the parish. Recently, our school competed in the

46th Annual Roselle Catholic High School Scholastic

Olympics against 12 other area Catholic elementary

schools. Saint James the Apostle School won 1st place

overall. This is the 2nd time in three years; and for the

next year we proudly display the trophy in our school

with our school name engraved for 2017-2018. It is

considered the Stanley Cup of Catholic schools.

Six (6) of our eighth graders brought home individual

awards along with $1500 scholarship each for freshmen

year should they attend Roselle Catholic. Goda Pocius

placed FIRST in Current Events (Girls); Grace

Roethlin placed FIRST in History (Girls); Steven

Rotolo placed FIRST in History (Boys); Sophia Ilagan

placed FIRST in Science (Girls); Christopher Lopez

placed THIRD in Science (Boys); and Yvonne

Agyapong placed SECOND in Mathematics (Girls). A

With the fresh feeling of academic achievement and

months of preparation at their backs, the entire eighth

grade class will take the COOP test on Friday,

November 10. This test is taken by all students – from

Catholic, private and public schools – who are

interested in attending an archdiocesan high school.

The high schools use the results to make decisions

about admission, scholarships and advanced placement.

We wish them well.

In the classroom, the eighth graders look forward each

week to “Mondays with Father Joe,” when Father Joe

teaches them religion. The students recently enjoyed a

complete tour of the church. The class is currently

reading the American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird,

which teaches love, compassion and tolerance in the

face of adversity and hate. Finally, the eighth grade has

been keeping up with technology, using their

Chromebooks in all classes.

We are so proud of our eighth graders and are grateful

to have the opportunity to share their accomplishments

with the entire parish! God bless our Class of 2018!

“Thanks-giving”

A Distinctive Meaning

Catholic Charities is deeply thankful for your positive

response to the donation bin. As we all know, one

way to give “thanks” is by “giving.” Just as the Lord

has given so many blessings, this is an ideal time to

give any unwanted clothing to the Catholic Charities

donation bin. Please note that in addition to all forms

of used clothing we also welcome small appliances,

shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, novels

and children’s books. Catholic Charities will report in

December on the amount of money generated from

the clothing bin. Happy “Thanks-giving!”

The donation bin is readily available by the handicap

parking section the Church. Thank you.

Help Wanted!! This Social Concerns Group is in need of your

assistance! After almost 10 years of organizing pick-ups, drivers, deliveries and collecting canned goods as well as donated frozen meatloaves and sandwiches, Lisa Gillo has decided that it is time for someone else to head this important committee. Lisa will continue until the end of the year, but we are hoping that someone will call Fr. Joe to volunteer. This committee can be split into two groups; the St. Joe’s sandwich and meatloaf group and the weekly Panera group. Please consider helping out — no one should ever go hungry! Below is the schedule for collection and deliveries. If you have any specific questions, please give Lisa a call. Panera: pickup is every Sunday in Short Hills after they close at 9:00PM. A call is placed a few hours before the scheduled pick up to check for any changes. The bread is then delivered on Monday morning to St. Joe’s in Elizabeth. Meatloaves and sandwiches are collected per the monthly schedule listed above. The Monday morning sandwich donations are left in the school kitchen from 8-10AM, then everything is packed and driven to St. Joe’s. Without this group, many people would not have a meal to eat!

2ND INSTALLMENT OF THE SAINTS OF THE PRO LIFE MOVEMENT

St. Maximilian Kolbe (January 8, 1894 – 14 August 14, 1941) was a Polish Franciscan friar and priest who lived during the terrible years of the World Wars. Because of his work resisting the Nazi regime and Freemasonry through the publication of a successful newsletter, he was sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. While there he regularly offered up mass-es and was a great consolation to the other prisoners.

There he was subjected to special abuse because he was a Catholic priest. When a fellow prisoner (with a wife and children) received a death sentence, Father Kolbe offered to take his place. After suffering for two weeks from thirst and starvation, Maximilian was killed by lethal injection. Pope John Paul II canon-ized him in 1982. Saint Maximilian is the patron saint of the pro-life movement, journalists, families, political prisoners and the chemically addicted.

His feast day is August 14th.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us!

WEEKLY MASS INTENTIONS NOVEMBER 13, 14, 15, 2017

7:00 – 8:00 P.M. IN THE CHURCH

SAINT JAMES PARISH MISSION:

The Three Challenges of Jesus

For more than two thousand years, three challenges

have confronted the followers of Christ. They form the

essence of Jesus’s life and teachings and have set the

standard for holiness down through the centuries.

Over 3 nights, Fr. Albert Haase, OFM, will lead us in a

parish mission entitled THE THREE CHALLENGES

OF JESUS. We will explore how to trust and surrender

when life is not going our way, how to forgive when

hurts and grudges consume us, and how to live an au-

thentic Eucharistic life of self-giving love.

WHO IS THE MISSION PREACHER?

Ordained a Franciscan priest in 1983, Albert Haase,

OFM, is a popular preacher, teacher, spiritual director

and radio personality. A former missionary to mainland

China for over eleven years, he is the author of nine

books on popular spirituality and the presenter on four

bestselling DVDs by Paraclete Press. He trains spiritual

directors in the archdiocese of Galveston-Houston TX.

He resides in Texas. Visit his web site at
