I hope everyone enjoyed what I believe is one of the best benefits the University offers its employees, which is our Winter Break! The New Year is here which means it is time to begin completing your Performance Review and Development (PRD’s) for the 2016 fiscal year and planning your goals for the 2017 fiscal year with your supervisor. In the February issue we will be highlighting some tips for completing the PRD End-of-Cycle Review. In UHR we are looking at our priorities for the New Year. We have a few areas that we will be focusing on this year with the goal of providing better services to you, our clients. We recognize that we need to be more consistent and efficient in the way we provide HR service and ensure our services are proactive. As HR professionals our priority is always to ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies, and to provide strategic services such as Talent Management, Training, and Performance Management. Finally, we will be focusing on process improvement that will include technology and HR metrics to help with decision making. We hope 2016 will be a year of prosperity and unlimited opportunities for each of you. For most of us, January means that the campus is quiet and we can catch our breath after a busy fall semester. It also tends to be a time for personal renewal as we resolve to exercise daily, eat less or more wisely, manage our stress, reduce our debts, spend more time with family and friends, read more books, volunteer, learn a new skill, find a new job, or in some other way improve our health and well-being. RecWell, the University Health Center, and UHR want to help you live well at work, designating January as Wellness @ Work month and offering activities, workshops, and services especially for faculty and staff – a walking challenge, free gym memberships, workshops on healthy eating, fitting in fitness, saving for college, and various Health Center services.

Challenge yourself and your coworkers to walk for 30 minutes for 30 days (weekdays). Walk in increments of at least 5 minutes and accumulate 30 minutes during the day or commit to a 30-minute walk at whatever time works in your schedule. Incorporate 30 minutes of brisk walking into your work day and walk 900 minutes or 60 miles by the end of the challenge to earn a chance to win one of the grand prizes. Anyone meeting the participation goal (at least 20 minutes/day for 30 days) will be awarded a participation prize. Register any day between January 4 and 20. Walk for 6 weeks from the day you register. This is a free program offered by University Recreation & Wellness.

While we take our jobs of supporting thousands of staff, faculty, and students seriously, there is nothing better than just being a Terp at the end of the day. On November 20th, a few lucky members of UHR had the opportunity to attend the UMD vs Rider men’s basketball game and cheer our team to victory.

UHR said goodbye to a valuable and long term employee in December. Wally King retired after over 35 years of dedicated service to our university. Wally began his career at UMD as a Detective with Public Safety in 1980. In 1990, he transferred to University Human Resources and worked in the Employment and Compensation Unit. He was a dedicated member of our team and will truly be missed! Wally, THANK YOU for your service!

You and your enrolled spouse:

1. Must elect a Primary Care Provider (PCP), if you have not already done so in 2015.

2. Complete the online health risk assessment provided by your medical plan.

3. Meet with your PCP to review the results of your health risk assessment.

4. Return the signed Physician Notification Form to your medical plan.

5. If you are due for any of the prevention screenings in the chart below, agree to complete them by September 30, 2016.

Save Money By Participating!

When you and your enrolled spouse participate in the Wellness Program, all of your sick or well visits to your PCP are free until the end of the calendar year. The sooner you complete your activities the sooner you start saving. You also avoid the surcharge fee deducted from your pay in the following year.

If You Do Not Participate in the Wellness Program

If you choose not to complete the healthy activities, you lose out on free PCP copays and you will have an additional deduction (surcharge) taken from your pay in 2017 of $75 ($3.12 bi-weekly or $5.25 monthly).

Additional Requirements for Those with Certain Conditions

If you or your enrolled spouse has the following: (1.) diabetes; (2.) hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol); (3.) hypertension (high blood pressure); (4.) asthma; (5.) COPD; (6.) cardiovascular disease; (7.) congestive heart failure; or (8.) chronic low back pain AND you have been contacted by your medical plan’s disease management nurse, you must agree to engage with that nurse in a treatment plan that will help you to better manage your illness. If you choose not to engage in the disease management program after being contacted, a $250 surcharge will be deducted from your bi-weekly ($10.42) or monthly ($20.84) pay starting January 1, 2017.

To better serve the UMD community, the Staff Relations office is expanding to five (5) Coordinators. Each Coordinator will provide Staff Relations services to assigned departments and academic units. A sampling of the services provided include grievance support and representation (Step One upon request only); disciplinary document review and consultation; guidance on performance management and writing effective PRDs; coaching and advising managers and supervisors; etc.

Staff Relations hopes that through relationship building, having a single point of contact, and having a better understanding of each unit’s needs, that units will find themselves spending less time addressing staff problems and concerns when they arise, and resolving issues faster when they do occur.

Jackie Richmond (Coordinator, Staff Relations) was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in New Carrollton, MD. She received her bachelor’s degree from Drexel University and her law degree from the University of

the District of Columbia, David A. Clarke School of Law (UDC). Shortly thereafter she began working for the New Jersey School Ethics Commission. Jacqueline’s passion for conflict resolution eventually led her to mediation work in the Delaware State Court System and subsequent work in the Delaware Department of Labor as a hearing examiner. She later returned to the D.C. metropolitan area where she accepted a position with her alma mater (UDC) as an employee and labor relations professional. Above all, Jacqueline’s greatest inspiration is her husband, Derek, and her two sons, Deven and Alan.

Beth Stachura, Esq. (Coordinator, Staff Relations) Beth is returning to the University System of Maryland after working as the Assistant Division Manager of Employee Services and Labor Relations for Prince George’s County

Government. Beth is also the former Chief Labor Negotiator and Labor and Employee Relations Manager for Bowie State University. Prior to her move to Maryland, Beth was in private legal practice in Rhode Island and Massachusetts for many years. Her areas of expertise include labor and employment law, labor negotiations, mediation, arbitration and litigation. Beth received her law degree from St. Louis University School of Law, a master’s degree in Labor Relations and Human Resources from the University of Rhode Island, and a bachelor’s degree in History from Xavier University. She is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and the U.S. District Court, District of Rhode Island. Beth has published numerous articles for the National Law Institute and has been a frequent speaker before attorneys, managers, and human resource professionals on a broad range of employment and labor law issues.

Melanie Amparo (Benefits Associate, Benefits) Melanie is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. She has several years of experience in medical billing, most recently

with Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. Additionally, Melanie is actively serving in the Maryland Army National Guard as a Chemical Specialist, responsible for defending the country against the threat of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons, and weapons of mass destruction.

Dana Brunson (Benefits Associate, Benefits) Dana comes to us from Johns Hopkins University where she worked in the Benefits Service Center for over two years. She also worked for Carefirst BCBS for

three years processing claims and explaining benefits to members. Dana has an bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Strayer University and she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Administration at the University of Maryland.

Deidra Adams (Coordinator, Staff Relations) Deidra has joined us as a Coordinator in Staff Relations. She has held positions including the Human Resources Supervisor at Chugach Federal Solutions and as a

Human Resources Business Partner, both at PANDORA Jewelry and Aerotek. She brings a wide depth and breadth of experience as she has held HR positions at Richmond American Homes, US Foodservice, Inc., Giant Food, Inc., and Georgetown University. Deidra’s labor relations experience includes SEIU and Teamsters unions. She is a graduate of the University of Baltimore with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, and she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Management with a concentration in Human Resources from Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Christine Hottel (Coordinator, Staff Relations) Christine is the newest member of Staff Relations. Christine’s position will handle all leave for the campus (FML, ASL, ESL, etc). She is a Terp since she comes to us

from Facilities Management where she held the position of Human Resources Coordinator for Medical Case Management since 2008. Prior to that, she worked with Thomson Financial as a Human Resources Business Associate for seven years. Christine is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management from the University of Maryland University College.
