UD'S EBONY HERITAGE SINGERS TO HOLD ANNUAL SPRING CONCERT

News Release March 13, 1992

Contact: Ellen Campfield or Pam Huber

DAYTON, Ohio -- Spring is the perfect time to have your spirits lifted, according to

Donna Cox, director of the University of Dayton's Ebony Heritage Singers. The group will

be performing their annual spring concert "so people will have an opportunity to come and

appreciate music and be closer to God," Cox said.

The concert will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in UD's Immaculate

Conception Chapel. Admission is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature traditional gospel music and poetry from James Weldon

Johnson's "God Trombone," a collection of folk sermons that depict the African-American

religious experience.

"Johnson's poetry is full of the imagery that is part of the black preacher's style and

black prayer," Cox said. "The African-American religious experience is very cultural, very

visual. It paints beautiful pictures and evokes deep emotions." She hopes that "people will

come for the fellowship, the Christian atmosphere and the opportunity to worship God."
