Issues with workarounds

Release issues

The table below lists new issues that are relevant to this release forwhich workarounds exist. The issues are listed in order by referencenumber.

# Description

7316 CB520HB3 blades do not power off.

An unexpected power on request occurs at almost the same time as a power off. TheCNA hardware for the HB3 blades mistakenly recognizes the WOL magic packet whenthere are none, and requests power on.

Workaround: Retry power off request.

# Description

469 Baremetal host not available immediately after service template job reportssuccessful completion

In UCP Director, the Baremetal apply service template job is reported complete before the OSdeployment is complete. The host might be undergoing reboots required to complete the OSdeployment andmight not be available to the customer immediately to perform any otheroperations.

Workaround: Open the console to the blade andmonitor to ensure that the OS deployment iscomplete before performing any other operation.

472 UCP storage operations become inaccessible when all Hyper-V hosts are poweredoff

Under rare circumstances when ALL the Hyper-V hosts are powered off, UCP storageoperations become inaccessible and cause UCP Director to throw errors. This is due to the factthat UCP Director cache gets invalidated and needs to be re-built.

Workaround: Make sure one of the Hyper-V hosts is online for UCP Director to re-build thecache.

526 Create/Apply Server profile does not check if the IP being used for it is already inuse

When a server profile is created and then subsequently being applied, it does not check if the IPaddress being applied is already in use. In case the IP address is already in use, the job fails.

Workaround: Manually check that the IP address is not being used before applying serverprofile

547 Windows HyperV service template deployment fails in an environment with ashared external AD if an IP is reused

In a UCP Director HyperV environment deployedwith an shared external active directory, theHyperV deployment fails if a previously used IP is used during deployment. This happensbecause while a Forward Lookup record is successfully created for the host during deployment, the corresponding Reverse Lookup record is not created (if a pre-existing Reverse Lookuprecord exists). So when UCP polls for the Host, the only item returned is for the old ReverseLookup record. This causes the apply service template job to fail.

Workaround: Delete existing Forward Lookup entries for IP address either whendeprovisioning the host, or before deploying a service template.

564 Cannot log out of Datacenter Operations Center UI

It is not possible for a user to log out of the Datacenter Operations Center (DOC) UI. The userstays logged in even after the browser is closed.

Workaround: Clear browser history. If using a chrome browser - force close the chromeprocess.

713 HTTP action failed due to incorrect credentials (negotiate)

When performing an action through the Workstation VM with a user that does not haveappropriate UCP credentials the UCP system will refuse an action from that user. The followingerror will show: "Unkown Error: The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authenticationscheme "Negotiate". The authentication header received from the server was "Negotiate,NTLM".

Workaround:When using the Workstation VM for accessing UCP,make sure to log on to theVM with the same credentials that you'll use to authenticate UCP login. This may require firstlogging into the Workstation VM as domain administrator and then granting your user therights to remote-desktop into the VM.

791 Running Attach-UCPVolume CLI command without passing parameters does notprompt for mandatory parameter 'serverId' or 'clusterId'

While running the UCP CLI Command to attach volumes to a cluster or a host withoutproviding any parameters, the CLI command does not prompt for mandatory parameter'clusterId' or 'serverId', causing the command to fail.

Workaround: Use the CLI commandwith the required parameters as specified in theexample for Attach-UCPVolume. It can be found by running the following command: Get-HelpAttach-UCPVolume -example

913 UCP 4.0 does not support Federated UCP's via an external PSC - Join site

UCP 4.0 does not support an external PSC configured in a federatedmode when the userselects to Join a Site.

Workaround/Resolution: Do not select to join a site when installing & configuring vCenterthrough the UCP workflow using an external PSC. Refer to VMware documentation and theUCP vCenter Manual install guide for additional details.

929 Username column is blank in UCP Switch Events page on VMware Web Client

The username column is blank within a Switch Summary monitoring page when viewingevents on said switch. This issue is seen only on the VMware web client

# Description

940 Individual monitoring indicators set to Unknown still show up in UCP afterelements have been offboarded causing DOC to show incorrect number ofUnknown indicators

If any specific indicators on an onboarded element in UCP are set to Unknown and the elementis offboarded, the individual element indicators still linger on and show 'Unknown', causing DOCto show incorrect number of Unknown indicators.

Workaround: Set all indicators of onboarded elements to 'Monitoring' before offboardingelements.

1179 Ethernet switch summary displays an incorrect message without networkprivileges

When logged into UCP as a user without network privileges (ie. UCP Storage Admin) theEthernet Switch Summary page is not displayedwith an incorrect error. "Sorry, an erroroccurred while processing your request".

Workaround/Resolution: Disregard this error when logged in a non-Network privileged useror log in as a user with network privileges.

1205 Unable to add online repositories for VMware in UCP 4.0

There is a regression with VMware code that causes PowerCLI to fail when an external VMwareonline repository is added. This leads to PowerCLI failures which can cause UCP API failures.More details about the issue can be found here:https://communities.vmware.com/thread/489560 Resolution: - Remove all VMware onlinerepositories

Workaround/Recommendations going forward: Do not add any VMware onlinerepositories into UCP

1241 UCP Director will intermittently not display the server profile name correctly if theDNS host name for the server is same as the server profile IP address.

There is an intermittent issue with UCP Management cache where UCP Director will notcorrectly display the server profile name for a host if the DNS host name for that servermatches the corresponding IP address for that server within the server profile.

Workaround: Try to use host names that do not match server profile IP address or if there is aneed to keep these consistent then make sure you perform the ipconfig /flushdns command toensure the right server profile name gets populated within UCP Director.

# Description

1317 Apply service template fails with error message "UCP failed to update DHCPconfiguration."

This issue is seen when the UCP Utility VM which acts as the DHCP server in the UCPManagement stack goes into recovery mode and the filesystem is in a read only mode. Becauseof this, UCP cannot create DHCP entries for a blade while applying a service template and thejob fails continuously.

Workaround: Reboot the UCP utility VM and verify that the file system is mounted in readwrite mode.

1347 Locales for DOC, UCP, and SQL VM's must be consistent in an HUR DisasterRecovery configuration

Locales for DOC, UCP, and SQL VM's must be consistent in an HUR Disaster Recoveryconfiguration. When performing journal operations all VM's must be the same locale - English(US) to perform journal operations within an HUR configuration.

Workaround: Configure DOC, UCP, and SQL VM to be the same locale - English (US)

1599 vSphere Distributed Switch VLAN and MTU warnings when rebooting a computeblade

These warnings may be visible in the vSphere health check UI after a compute blade has beenrebooted.

Workaround/Resolution: Ensure that all portgroups in the virtual distributed switch withdifferent VLANs have the same MTU in the physical switch because ESXi will not detect theMTU mismatch of full paths and Jumbo Frame packets might forwarded to other physicalswitch ports which are out of the virtual distributed switch. At those ports, there is a risk thatthe Jumbo Frame packets might be dropped if that port and VLAN do not enable JumboFrames.

Additionally, ensure the number of MAC addresses to be generated by the health check will beless than the size of the physical switch(es) MAC table. Otherwise there is a risk that theswitches will run out of memory, with subsequent network connectivity failures.

# Description

3050 Ethernet switch refresh job fails when one or more hosts in vCenter isdisconnected or in a not responding state

Occasionally, when one or more servers is in a disconnected or not responding state in vCenter, the Ethernet switch refresh job fails in UCP.

Workaround: Remove all disconnected/not responding hosts from vCenter inventory.

3102 ESXi host disconnected from vSphere client cannot be powered off from UCP UI

If a particular server is disconnected from vSphere client, when we try to power it off from theUCP UI, it fails.

Workaround: Add the host back in vSphere inventory and then issue the power offcommand. OR If the host cannot be added back to vSphere inventory, the UCP API or CLI canbe used to force power off the server.

3169 DOC UI Allows user to select non-deployed blades as secondary hosts

In the DOC UI, while setting up replication between two hosts, the host at the secondary site isallowed to be selected even if it is not deployed. This kicks off the job, but fails since thesecondary site does not have the host deployed.

Workaround: Only select hosts on the secondary sites which are deployed.

3746 UCP Director API for create and attach volumes does not immediately validatestorage ports when specified manually

When storage ports are specifiedmanually while using the UCP Director API end point forcreate and attach volumes, the job is kicked off without verifying if the selected ports matchUCP Director criteria for storage ports. As a result, the user cannot know until the job fails if theselected ports met the criteria or not. As a result, the storage volume created as a part of thejob remains in the pool as well.

Workaround: Refer to the UCP Director API Reference Guide for create and attach volume tosee UCP's storage port requirement and view the example.

3992 While creating a server profile from the identity pool, UCP Director does not checkif an identity is already in use.

When creating a server profile by using identities such as UUID, MAC address, WWNN,WWPNand IP address, UCP Director does not check if the randomly selected resource is already in use.Though the probability of the same address being selected is low, this has been seenoccasionally. As a result, when the server profile is applied, it fails with an error message thatthe identity is in use by other server.

Workaround: Delete the server profile with the duplicate identity

4088 Cannot reuse service templates with formatted volumes

When creating a new service template, UCP allows creation of raw or formatted volumes whichcan be attached as a part of the apply service template workflow. Once this service template isdeployed, in case the same service template is redeployed, though the OS deploymentsucceeds, the volume provisioning will fail due to conflicting names for formatted volumes, causing the apply service template job to fail.

Workaround: Re create formatted disks with unique name and attach them to the deployedhosts.

4134 UCP log generation feature cannot handle invalid windows file name for logbundle

The UCP log bundle generation feature does not verify invalid file names such as CON, PRN,AUX, NUL, COM1 - 9, LPT1 - 9

Workaround: Use valid windows file name for log bundle

# Description

4414 Concurrent storage operations using different intended use options on the samestorage ports may cause one of the storage operations to fail

Under rare circumstances when two storage provisioning operations involving the samestorage ports andmultiple intended use types (that are performed simultaneously), one of thestorage operations will fail. This is because of a locking condition where one operation which iscreating the Host Storage Domain, locks it and the second operation cannot re-use the sameHost Storage Domain.

Workaround: Re-run the storage provisioning operation.

4968 Users are unable to click the About button when on an error screen

When users are on an error screen, they are unable to click the About button for moreinformation about the system.

Workaround: Open another page without an error, for example the Jobs and Events page, tobe able to click the button.

4969 Cannot detach non-boot volumes from a Hyper-V host through UCP in SCVMMenvironment when it is powered off and not in SCVMM inventory

Under rare circumstances, e.g. when Hyper-V host is powered off in an SCVMM environmentand removed from SCVMM inventory, UCP cannot remove non-boot volumes from the host.

Workaround: Power the host on and re-add the host to the SCVMM inventory to be able todetach volumes from the SCVMM host.

4984 UCP storage operations become inaccessible when all Hyper-V hosts are poweredoff in an SCVMM environment

5026 UCP Director contextual actions are disabled in SCVMM

When using SCVMMwith UCP Director, it is not possible to navigate to Fabrics >SelectElements > Select UCP Director contextual actions, e.g. Fabrics > All Hosts > Right click andperform actions.

Workaround: Directly open the UCP Director plugin to perform said actions.

5027 Incorrect URL opens from chassis console in vSphere Web Client

When accessing the chassis console from the vSphere Web Client actions tab, the browser willopen but not load due to an incorrect URL. The URL opens at http://, but should open athttps://.

Workaround: Change the URL manually from http:// to https://.

5055 Cannot create a HB3 cluster in UCP v4.1/v4.1.1 when host has 4 network portsinitially configured

Due to a pre job validation check in UCP for older blade models (HB1, HB2), UCP expects exactlytwo ports to be configured on a blade while creating a host profile from a reference host used tocreate the cluster. Any other number of ports configured will result in the job not goingthrough.

Workaround: Configure exactly two ports on the reference host while creating a host profileto be used on the cluster. Once the cluster is set up and running, the remaining two powertscan be added to the dvSwitches.

5158 Cannot edit EFI settings when editing a server profile

When the user is editing a server profile, the user is unable to edit the EFI settings.

Workaround: There are two current workarounds for this bug:

• Delete the current server profile and create a new one .

• Use the API to edit the EFI settings.

5174 In an SCVMM UCP environment, applying only a server profile on a blade causesthe blade to show up as a Custom boot type.

In an SCVMM UCP environment when any server profile is applied on a blade, the blade comesup as a Custom boot type. As a result, no service template or other server profile can be appliedon this blade. Additionally, Apply service template UI for that blade cannot be opened.

Workaround: Apply server profile using the apply service template workflow only. In case theserver is stuck as a custom boot type, remove the server profile and then reapply the serverprofile using the service template workflow.

5338 Fibre Channel switch may reboot due to the out-of-memory caused by a memory leakagebug in FOS v7.3.1c

The memory leak is caused by periodic polling operation. The switch will attempt to non-disruptively auto-recover by rebooting the system. The memory-intensive operation maycause "Out-of-Memory Panic" when it is executed in a low free memory state.

Workaround: To prevent a switch from having an unexpected out-of-memory crash duringmemory-intensive operations such as supportsave, firmwaredownload, or firmware commit, perform the following procedure prior to these operations:

1. Monitor available free memory with the commandmemshow.

2. If the free memory falls below 100MB, before beginning any memory-intensive operations, perform hareboot to recover leakedmemory.

5394 VLANS for VSAN are not set correctly.

If the user changes the VLAN ID for VSAN manually, UCP Directory may configure incorrectly. This may lead to the loss of redundancy of storage traffic. It is not recommended tomanuallychange the VLAN ID for VSAN.

Workaround: Manually fix the VLAN ID for VSAN. The correct setting is that two VLAN IDs forVSAN are set to two switches respectively.

5398 Server profile creation view does not show expected memory speed candidate.

Sometimes in server profile creation view, the candidate memory speed does not match theserver model. If a user uses the default memory speed, the issue does not affect server profilecreation.

Workaround: If the candidate memory speed does not match the server model, refresh the UI.The following list shows the expectedmemory speed for each server model.

• HB1: Force DDR3 800, Force DDR3 1333, Force DDR3 1600

• HB2: Force DDR3 800, Force DDR3 1333, Force DDR3 1600, Force DDR3 1866

5550 OS deployment may fail with volume attachment other than boot volume

Deployment appears to be successful when an OS service template is applied with create andattach boot volume and other volumes, but the other volumes are not attached to the server.

Workaround: Deploy service template with attached boot volume only. After the deployment iscompleted, attach other volumes.

5727 Attaching volumes to ESXi fails once the server profile is removed and applied again on4000E

UCPD disables san boot option when the server profile is removed in 4000E environments. However, UCPD doesn't enable san boot option when the server profile is applied. UCPD checkssan boot option when UCPD attaches the volumes for ESXi. Therefore, UCPD displays an errormessage when UCPD attaches volumes for an ESXi server where the server profile wasremoved and applied again.

Workaround: After removing a server profile from a server in 4000E environments, enable thesan boot options manually. This manual operation is neededwhen the server is used as a ESXiserver. The steps to enable san boot options are described in the Compute Assembly Guide andbelow, as follows:

1. Launch a Remote Consolewindow and boot a blade.

2. When prompted in the Remote Consolewindow, type Ctrl + E.

3. In the Emulex OneConnect window, select the first CNA channel, and press Enter.

4. Select Enable/Disable Boot from SAN and press Enter.

5. Select Enable and press Enter.

6. When asked to reboot, click No. Return to the main menu.

7. Repeat steps to enable for channels in the list.

8. After you configure the last channel, selet Yes to restart the blade.

12329 When an ESXi image is added to a UCP image repository, it cannot have the same name asan existing ESXi image in UCP inventory.Displaying two images with the same name is not supported as this is a limitation in vCenterautodeploy rules.

If the image you plan to add has the same name as an existing image, rename it using thevSphere PowerShell CLI. The image cannot simply be renamed in Windows since vSphere willnot recognize the image afterwards.

12330 User can still make REST calls when permissions have been revokedIf UCP related permissions for example - network administrator privileges are revoked from auser, the user will still be able to make network related calls till about 30 minutes from the timethe privileges were removed. This issue happens because UCP cache refresh is scheduled at a30 minute interval.

Wait for 30 minutes and try again.

14678 Changing the boot type of a server may succeed immediately after the Blade is poweredONIf the boot type for a server is changed too soon after the Blade is powered on, HCSM and UCPDirector may be out of sync on the power status of the blade and UCP Director may allowchanging boot type between custom boot and ESXi stateless.

Wait for the blade to be powered ON completely and ensure that UCP shows the correct powerstatus before attempting to change the boot type for the server.

14697 After recovery from unexpected network outage, the power status of some blades may be'unknown'When UCP regains connectivity to HCSM, it may not pick up the correct power states of someblades. Even after a server inventory refresh, the blades' power states may still be reported as'unknown.' An additional side affect is that most of the Hitachi server actions through the webclient will not be available.

1.) Open a web browser to HCSM and log in as ucpadmin

2.) Go to the Resources tab

3.) Under "General Tasks," click Refresh\Refresh All Chassis and Servers

4.)When the task completes, return to UCP Director web interfaceUCP Director web interfaceand click Refresh Server Inventory in the UCP Server Inventory table

5.) The UCP display of current power states for all blades should be corrected

15242 If VPC Domain can disable on one of the Cisco 5K switches, it will cause both switches tobecome the Cisco switches to get disconnected from external networkIf VPC domain gets disabled on one of UCP's Cisco switches due to some out of band activity, the other switch will remain connected to the network outside of the appliance till the nexttopology scan. However, on UCP's next topology scan, UCP will recreate the VPC peer linkbetween UCP's two Cisco switches. This will cause the VPCs to become inconsistent betweenUCP's Cisco switches, and all uplinks to the outside network will be disabled.

Manually recreate VPCs to the outside network via a SSH client.

# Description

4015 When a Windows or Linux server profile is moved from one server toanother, the target server shows up as custom typeIf a server profile of a Windows or Linux server is moved from one blade to another inUCP, the blade shows "custom" as the boot type instead of "Linux" or "Windows".

4018 Cannot move server profile across racks with different VLANs in an L3configuration

In a UCP appliance with a Cisco 9k switches, if the 9332 ToR switches are configured inL3 mode with different VLANs across each rack, server profiles can be moved, but theserver will fail to boot since it has the incorrect VLAN set.

4038 Incorrect error message when trying to remove a server profile from a hostalready deleted from vSphere client.

When trying to remove a server profile from a host that has already been removed fromvSphere, an incorrect error message appears saying the server profile remove failedinstead of a warning which says that the host is not in vSphere inventory.

4116 UCP Director reports success while running configure network commandwith a reserved VLAN

When a user runs a configure network commandwith a reserved VLAN such as 1002(that is reserved for FCoE), the job reports a success. However, since the VLAN isreserved, UCP Director does not configure the VLAN on the switch.

4209 Performance aggregation jobs fail in UCP in rare conditions

Performance aggregation jobs fail in UCP in rare conditions due to an internal SQLexception

4329 Selecting multiple versions of same image package fails with administratorerror

The UCP Director's Images page does not correctly validate identical packages withdifferent versions when they are enabled via the API/UI.

The user should not enable two identical packages of different versions.

4335 DOC UI shows Hyper-V hosts as EsxiStateless

In the UCP 4.1 release, support for baremetal Hyper-V failover and failback was added inthe API and not in the UI. Hence the UI still shows Hyper-V hosts incorrectly asESXiStateless.

# Description

13886 The locale of the vCenter client used to access UCP Director should be the same asthe locale of the OS running on the UCP Management VMUCP Director can only be accessed in the language of the OS that is running on the UCPManagement VM. Currently UCP Director supports Japanese and English languages. If avCenter client tries to access UCP in a language that is different than the language ofthe UCP VM the format of events, alarms and tasks will not be accurate.

15095 Volume detaches from a cluster can intermittently lead to false failure messagesIf a user tries to detach multiple volumes that share the same storage pathconcurrently or immediately one after the other, the detach succeeds but it canintermittently throw a false failure message.

15162 Same server ID with different host names causes InvalidOperationExceptionEach server host in UCP server inventory is identified with server ID. If admin changesserver ID directly on the host after it boots into ESXi it's possible to assign server ID.Doing this will create conflict in vCenter server host inventory which in turn result inserver host being not correctly available to UCP. Each server host should have uniqueserver ID.

15540 Manual editing of HORCM files used for replication may cause replication to breakand be reported successfulUCP Disaster Recovery owns the HORCM file configurations used to setup replication. Ifthe HORCM files are editedmanually, UCP does not have the knowledge of knownstates andmay result in unpredictable behavior, such as breaking replication andcausing it to be reported as successful. Please do not modify the HORCM files used forreplication.

16013 Current image reads: "Updated" HitachiESXi image" if the image is clonedCurrent image might have the following text prepended "(Updated)" once the imagehas been cloned. This is an intermittent issue at VMware’s end.

16130 Ignore system partition failure errors when deploying windows using UCP servicetemplateDuring windows installation a warningmessage might popup on the console stating -“Setupwas unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing systempartition. See the Setup log files for more information.” or

The user should ignore these messages. UCP handles this error by rebooting the blade, loading the appropriate HBA driver, and dealing with MPIO issues and disk initialization. The user should not interfere by attempting other troubleshooting steps.

# Description

17433 Uninstalling UCP Disaster Recovery from UCP Director only results in UCPDatacenter Director failureUCP Disaster Recovery will not work in UCP Datacenter Director if UCP DisasterRecovery is not also installed in UCP Director. Uninstalling UCP Disaster Recovery fromUCP Director at a site that has been added to UCP Datacenter Director, without fullyuninstalling it from UCP Datacenter Director will result in an error when using thedisaster recovery feature of UCP Datacenter Director. Uninstalling UCP DisasterRecovery from UCP Datacenter Director will disable disaster recovery functionality inUCP Datacenter Director.

18035 Password for SCP server cannot contain the "@" characterFirmware update and switch configuration restore operations will not work on theBrocade switches if SCP password has an "@" character in it. Please use othercharacters when setting a new password.

18331 Replication will fail if the volume size is 1.2 GBIf user tries to replicate a volume that is 1.2 GB in size replication will fail as UCP doesnot detect the volume capacity accurately.

18612 The Hitachi UCP Director Status Monitor page occasionally displays an AMQPcommunication error messageThe Hitachi UCP Director Status Monitor page may occasionally display an AMQPcommunication error message in the All Events table. This error event says "Failed tocommunicate with the AMQP service at IP Address: 127.0.0.1". If the UCP System isregistered into a UCP Datacenter Director service, there is a small chance that theDatacenter Director service will not receive a monitor state message from the UCPsystem. This will be corrected during the next regularly scheduled UCPmonitor staterefresh task.

18648 Attaching storage volume between different OS version succeedsFor example, applying volume created earlier (not currently used by any Linux host) forLinux OS can be attached to non-Linux hosts. This is because UCP restricts only thecurrently in use storage volumes to be not shared across different OSs.

18848 Cannot view Performance Graphs on MacOpening up the performance graphs on a Mac results in an error popup, and the graphsdo not properly display.

19486 No monitoring support for depletion thresholds in HUS storage array familyWhen depletion thresholds are exceeded on a HUS storage array, monitoring statusshows "Normal" state. This is expected behavior since HDvM does not supportmonitoring for depletion thresholds.

20519 Identity conflict after removing server profile from serverRemove Server Profile removes the virtual identity from the server leaving the serveronly with physical identity. The physical identity of the server could have beenvirtualized to another server causing a an identity conflict.

20991 Topology UI has been deprecated in 3.5 releaseGoing forward from 3.5 we will be using vC OPs for topology information and not thetopology maps that show up in the vSphere web client UI. The UI options will beremoved in the 3.5.1 release.

22412 Re-applying server profile fails when changing slots for blades currently existingin UCP server inventoryWhen a blade that currently exists in UCP server inventory is moved to a different slot,re-applying the server profile that is already associated to that slot fails. This is due toduplicate MAC addresses in the database.
