Types of reactions
TYPES OF REACTIONS: 1. Oxidation2. Combustion3. Reduction4. Decomposition5. Neutralization6. Precipitation7. Displacement
Oxidation When a substance reacts with oxygen. *example* zinc + oxygen zinc oxide
*example* butter and cooking oils going off respiration
Combustion When a substance burns in oxygen. - the products are ALWAYS carbon dioxide, water, and energy. *example*Methane + oxygen carbon dioxide+water
Decomposition When a compound breaks into simpler
substances: Thermal decomposition silver oxide –heat silver+ oxygen Electrical decomposition sodium chloride –electrical energy sodium+ chlorine Decomposition by light silver bromide– light energy silver + bromine
Decomposition:
Larry harry Louis
Neutralization Acid+ base= salt +water
Example:HCL+ calcium carbonate calcium chloride + CO2 + water
Single displacement:
Eleanor larry elounor harry
Double displacement
Conservation of mass The total mass of the reactants is equal
to the total mass of the products.
Energy changes: Exothermic reaction: when energy is
given out. And the mixture gets hotter (release heat)
- example: combustion/ respiration
Endothermic reaction: when energy is taken in. and the mixture gets colder (take in the heat).
- example: decomposition by light
Chemical equations A chemical reaction is a process in which 2 or
more substances combine chemically together to form one or more new substances.
One way to describe a chemical reaction is by writing a chemical equation.
A chemical equation represents with words /symbols/formula, the reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
Reactants -----> products Types of chemical equations: word equation formula equation
Displacement When a more reactive element takes place of a
less reactive element: Example: Chromium oxide+ aluminum= chromium+ aluminum oxide
